• How to create an GUI that communicate with the USB Devices

  I am doing my Project using win 32 programming.I am just learning about win32 programming and able to create an UI.I want to communicate with an USB Device with that UI.SO,How can i go for that?Is there any predefined functions will be there are we need to create the function for communicating with the OS and get the devices List and got the details about them. My purpose is to , 1.Creating an UI that tells about the Basic information about the device(We want to send a control request to the device to get the descriptors). 2.For that first of all i want to communicate with the OS for device attachment.That will lead to get the information about the device and Enumeration takes place and then only i request the device information through descriptors by using standard Requests. 3.And also i want to create the driver for my device.That will also need to achieve for communicating with OS(Windows). So,can anyone help me about this?How can i achieve this or approach this? Note: I am at the entry level now so anyone give response will be in a detailed format like step by step process would be appreciable.

• How can I find which "command" corresponds to opening a gnome-panel menu, for use in a keyboard shortcut?

  There are many questions and answers here and around the web on setting basic keyboard shortcuts in GNOME. Most of them are either for launching applications, or Compiz settings, or for changing defaults for other things for which Ubuntu provides defaults shortcuts. What I want to know though is how to refer to a gnome-panel menu item in a custom keyboard shortcut. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with GNOME Classic, and the old GNOME 2 / Ubuntu 10.04 keyboard shortcuts for the main menus (Alt-F1) and the "Me Menu" (Super+S) don't seem to work. So my question is two-fold. Primarily I'd like to know how to set those shortcuts. But a second-order question is how I could have found this out myself: is there some program I can use to see what signals or commands are fired off when I click on various things, in this case gnome-panel menu items? I'm interested in the broader question because I've sometimes wanted to set shortcuts for specific menus or menu items in GNOME 2, so a way to find out what command I need there would be useful. Give a man a rod, as they say :-) I've had a look at a good lot of keyboard shortcut and menu related items here to no avail. One somewhat relevant question is this one, but it's just a "how do I do it" question, and applies to Unity, not GNOME, although it would be great if whatever investigatory method answers this question might also apply under different desktops, like Unity. The answer to this question is essentially how I was doing it in 10.04 / GNOME 2, although the questioner's query isn't exactly addressed - how to get directly to "Broadcast" with a key combination. Again, it would be great if an answer delving into how such menus work and how they interact with the rest of the system would be applicable to pinpoint menu items.

• Knowing state of game in real time

  I'm trying to code a tic tac toe game in java and I need help figuring out how to efficiently and without freezing the program check if someone won the game. I'm only in the design stages now, I haven't started programming anything but I'm wondering how would I know at all times the state of the game and exactly when someone wins? Response to MarkR: (note: had to place comment here, it was too long for comment section) It's not a homework problem, I'm trying to get more practice programming GUI's which I've only done once as a freshman in my second introductory programming course. I understand I'll have a 2D array. I plan to have a 2D integer array where x would equal 1 and o would equal 0. However, won't it take too much time if I check after every move if someone won the game? Is there a way or a data structure or algorithm I can use so that the program will know the state (when I say state I mean not just knowing every position on the board, the int array will take care of that, I mean knowing that user 1 will win if he places x on this block) of the game at all times and thus can know automatically when someone won?

• Cannot Create Bootable USB Drive from .iso file

  I've tried formatting the flash drive as FAT as well as Mac OS journaled through diskutility but still cannot successfully create a bootable drive. I'm following the directions here exactly: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx Environment: Macbook Pro trying to create a bootable flash drive for a Macbook Pro. 8GB flash drive. Tested ubuntu-12.04.1 as well as ubuntu 12.20 .iso 64-bit downloads. Nothing to repair in disk utility for this hard drive. Every time I finish step 8 of the tutorial I get "file system not recognized" with the options to "initialize" meaning to reformat my drive, "ignore" or "eject." When I try to re-inspect the flash drive in disk utility after plugging it back in I see that it has some error when I try to verify it but the "repair" button is disabled. I just want to boot to ubuntu when my mac first starts up.   Entering your full password on a touch screen device can really become a pain in the neck, luckily for us we can link a short 4 digit PIN to our user account and log in with that instead. Note: PIN codes are nowhere near as safe as using an alphanumeric password, however, they do still have a purpose when you don’t want to enter your 15 character password on a touch screen device. Creating a PIN Press the Win + I keyboard combination to bring up the Settings Charm, then click on the Change PC settings link. This will open up the Modern UI PC Settings app, where you can click on the Users section. On the right hand side you will see a Create a PIN button, click on it. Now you will need to verify that you are the owner of this user account by entering your password. Then you can choose a PIN, remember that it can only contain digits. • Getting started on Large Projects

  So I just graduated from my College with a B.S. in Comp. Science (although it was a good school, we're the only accredited CS department in our state.....for w/e that means lol) I feel like im a decent programmer, not amazing....but not terrible. Anyways I got my first job about 2 weeks ago, it's a pretty entry level job: firmware development/tester (I know I know people look down on testers...but I gotta start somewhere). Anyways there isn't a whole lot of coding to be had right now (mostly simple stuff) but here soon I have the option of helping out with development (which is what I want to do) Thing is....I have NEVER worked on a huge project. I mean in school sure we had "group" projects but nothing really big. So I'm not super familiar with HUGE classes and such (main language was C++)....Is this something I'll just get used to with time? Some fellow students were used to that with internships and such...but I never got that chance. My job was mostly a "one man job" kinda thing. Mostly little things. Plus in class we never did huge projects anyways. So how do you guys I guess "plan" out these things? Do you use a whiteboard and plan out classes and such....or what. Also...another worry of mine is that I have to use google......ALOT for examples of code, because sometimes I just don't get how something works. Is this normal? It makes me feel sorta.....stupid I guess. I mean "technically" i've had 4-5 years coding experience......but it really only feels like I had 2 years of REAL experience. If that makes any sense? • Force startx to run X in a specific resolution and refresh Rate

  From my past experience (using Win-Xp), this particular monitor works only on 60Hz , Best resolution being 1024x768. I have "installed and configured" Ubuntu 12.04 Minimal (on USB stick) so that most of the time terminal is used, however, whenever there is a need to enter GUI, I may issue startx command to go into gnome. However the problem is that on this particular system, issuing this command poses problem because its default refresh rate won't synchronize with the monitor. The display keep on flickering and utterly unreadable. It is visible that gnome has been loaded and default wallpaper and desktop items are visible. But the problem is due to refresh rate different than 60Hz. I am looking for a command attribute to startx command which will force the refresh rate to 60Hz and resolution preferably to 1204x768 I can open terminals with Ctrl+Alt+T and enter commands. Key combinations like Ctrl+Alt+NumPlus works flawlessly in distributions like solaris, but it's not working for me. Also the commands like xrandr -r 60 60 being refresh rate wont work. The same problem is faced even when I boot from a live CD

• accessing live usb files from new hd ubuntu install

  After my live USB (ubuntu 12.04 lts) refused to boot, I proceeded to install the same Ubuntu version on the laptop hard drive (a dual boot next to Win xp). This all went well without a hitch. Previous to this, I spent several weeks enjoying and exploring ubuntu from the usb pendrive. During this time I changed lots of settings and customized Firefox and more. Now, I'd like to import the home folder from the usb drive into the new install home folder on the hard disk, which is the purported folder that holds all those special settings to my knowledge. Unfortunately and only being familiar with Windows file systems, the view of the usb file system from the new hdd install is totally perplexing. I can't find anything that looks anywhere close to the original file system. More, I can't find any of the files I had created and stored there, like the LibreOfficeCalc file that has all my passwords (this one is really discouraging) that was stored on the ubuntu desktop. Help me find this file alone and I'll bow down with full apologies to any and all computer gods. Being able to import all those customizing settings into the new install would be a major bonus also, but hey, I'm not greedy. I'll take the passwords file and be happy! And humble! I would be very grateful for some clear, understandable help on this. Thanks

• Problem with missing JSON functions on PHP 5.2.6 / Plesk 8.4

  I have a vserver running openSuse 10.3, Apache 2 and Plesk 8.4. I can update/upgrade neither, as it is apparently not recommended to upgrade openSuse 10.3 (and an update to the EOL 10.4 does not seem to make much sense) and Plesk fails to update no matter what version I try (even fails to upgrade to 8.4.1). Still I can live with that somehow, primarily because I don’t have the time to do a fresh remote install on the vserver. What really is a problem is, that though the installed PHP is 5.2.6 it has no zip library and no json functions. The first is probably because PHP was not compiled with --enable-zip. The second is a big mystery though. As I understand it, it always comes with PHP unless its compiled with the --disable-json configure option. This is however not the case. And the json extension module is just not there. I even tried to enable it with extension=json.so with no luck either. the configure options of my PHP are (as shipped with Plesk 8.4) '../configure' '--prefix=/usr' '--datadir=/usr/share/php5' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--bindir=/usr/bin' '--with-libdir=lib' '--includedir=/usr/include' '--sysconfdir=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file-path=/etc/php5/apache2' '--with-config-file-scan-dir=/etc/php5/conf.d' '--enable-libxml' '--enable-session' '--with-mm' '--with-pcre-regex=/usr' '--enable-xml' '--enable-simplexml' '--enable-spl' '--enable-filter' '--disable-debug' '--enable-inline-optimization' '--disable-rpath' '--disable-static' '--enable-shared' '--program-suffix=5' '--with-pic' '--with-gnu-ld' '--with-system-tzdata=/usr/share/zoneinfo' '--with-apxs2=/usr/sbin/apxs2' '--disable-all' '--disable-cli' As I understand it, PECL is not an option with 5.2.6. Or am I mistaken? Even if I was not, the openSuse repository only goes as far as PHP 5.2.4. The openSuse install even came without zypper, which I had to manually install. So is there a way to get ziplib and json running in PHP 5.2.6 without having to recompile the binary?

• How can I properly create /dev/dvd?

  Certain programs look for /dev/dvd by default to find DVDs. When I first boot my computer without a DVD inserted, /dev/dvd exists and points to the correct place (/dev/sr0). However, when I insert a DVD, /dev/dvd disappears. I'd like it to stick around so I don't have to navigate to /dev/sr0 in programs that are looking for DVDs. How do I ensure that the /dev/dvd symlink exists and points to the right place? It looks like I can add something to /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules. This site gives a couple of examples, but the 70-persistent-cd.rules file says "add the ENV{GENERATED}=1 flag to your own rules", which isn't part of the examples. The man 7 udev page is impenetrable to me, and I'm not convinced the linked page gives 100% of the information I need. So, what can I do on a modern, Ubuntu 12.04 (or later) system to make /dev/dvd always exist and point to the right device? EDIT: Is it as simple as adding ENV{GENERATED}=1 to the rules in the linked page, something like this: SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sr0", SYMLINK+="dvd", GROUP="cdrom", ENV{GENERATED}=1 Is that the right information for modern Ubuntu? What is ENV{GENERATED} doing there, when it wasn't generated, but hand-written?

Ressourcen können hierbei natürlich nicht nur die Oracle Prozesse (Datenbank, Listener, Virtuelle IP Adressen etc.) sein, sondern auch eigene Applikationen, die unter die Überwachung der Grid Infrastruktur resp. Clusterware gestellt werden. Dies kann von simplen Neustartanforderungen im Single Server Betrieb bis zu klassischen Failover Szenarien in Clusterumgebungen reichen. Diesem Aspekt trägt auch die Tatsache Rechnung, dass es seit einiger Zeit generische Applikations-Agenten (Siebel, Tomcat, GoldenGate, Apache, ...) für die Clusterware gibt und eine abgespeckte GI Installation auf der Oracle eigenen Middleware Hardware (Exalogic) läuft, um die Prozesse zu überwachen. Diese Cluster Ready Services werden vom Befehl "crsctl" gesteuert. Deshalb lohnt es sich dieses Utility mal genauer anzuschauen, zumal es einige Feinheiten enthält, die nicht direkt aus der Dokumentation bzw. Hilfe des Tools ersichtlich sind.

• Basic is Best

  Fellow foodies will recognize the recent movement towards "farm-to-table" restaurants. These venues attempt to simplify their menus and source ingredients as close to the source as possible. I had the opportunity to dine at such a restaurant the other evening. I was gushing about the appetizer to my server when she described the preparation for the item and then punctuated her comments with "basic is best". I reminded my fellow enterprise architect diners there was an architecture lesson in that statement. They rolled their eyes and chuckled. But they also knew I was right. I'm reminded of Frederick Brooks' book The Mythical Man Month and his latest The Design of Design. The former must read book talks about complexity. But he refrains from damning all complexity. The world we live in and enterprises we strive to transform with enterprise architecture are complicated organisms, much like the human body. But sometimes a simple solution is the best approach. Fewer applications (think: portfolio rationalization). Fewer components. Fewer lines of code. Whatever level of abstraction you are working at, less is more. I'm reminded of the enterprise architecture principle "Control Technical Diversity". At one firm I created pithy catch phrases for each principles. I named this one "Less is More". But perhaps another variation is what my server said the other night, "Basic is Best".

• Internet unusably slow with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B card

  So I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 for a dual boot with wind 7. After the install I had like 300 updates, so I installed them. At first I could use the internet, although it was extremely slow. However now I cannot, sometimes it will load and others it will simply time out. When I try to download something it will either take forever or will not at all. This is a wired system. On Windows side my speeds are fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also like I said I am new to Linux/Ubuntu so please be nice. One last thing, I also installed 11.10 for same dual boot on my laptop, and wireless speed is the same as on Windows? Only the wired desktop gives me the problem? Hear is some hardware info.. Hope it helps. • Software development company business plan

  I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question, so please forward me to the right place. I have about 10 years professional experience as software developer. Mostly on the Java platform doing server side programs. I have picked up a bit of Linux skills on the way as well. I know HTML and Javascript, so I can make a website that would not be too ugly, but I am not going to win any prizes with it. In fact I think I am pretty terrible in the user interface department. My initial plan is to do Android development. I read a few Android books and tried making a few apps. Since it is Java based I think I got the technical side down. Lately I have been thinking about iphone and Mac development, because of the relevant app store/development programs. The trouble is I don't know Objective C. As a side question, how long would it take me to become proficient in Objective C? Considering that I am working on my own and could hire somebody to help me for a short time for low wages if necessary what are my options? What are the pro and cons of the development programs app stores of Android and Apple? Which development/app stores are out there beside the ones I mentioned? Do you think it is necessary to find funds to get me started or should I just use my savings? If you have positive/negative experiences in a similar situations can you please share them? • Display Problems running Ubuntu 12.04 in Windows VMware Player

  I am posting this again because I have changed to VMWare Player and I discovered something new. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Guest) in VMWare Player 6.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host. I have VMWare Tools installed properly. I am running MATE but the problem persists when I change (to and from) xfce, gnome, mate a-- and back again I had been using this for a couple of years without any graphics issues. After an Ubuntu update (typical) -- my video is corrupt and will not refresh correctly. My desktop icons are "mirrored" and when I open a terminal window (for instance) -- sometimes -- the window appears multiple times. Of course, only one is the real image. It seems to be a refresh problem. When I move an active window around the screen the "older" images "erase" and my icons (for instance) are in the correct location. For instance, I can move the terminal around a pretty corrupted window and the screen behind it is repainted correctly. NEW: Next, I got the idea to try and Remote Desktop in to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Guest OS from my Windows 7 64-bit Host. Once working, and connected via Win RDC -- using MATE as default in my /etc/xrdp/startws.sh -- my video is not corrupted and works fine (as in the past). Any ideas about what is going on ? or how to fix this ?

• Any empirical evidence on the efficacy of CMMI?

  I am wondering if there are any studies that examine the efficacy of software projects in CMMI-oriented organizations. For example, are CMMI organizations more likely to finish projects on time and/or on budget than non-CMMI organizations? Edit for clarification: CMMI stands for "Capability Maturity Model Integration". It's developed by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University (SEI-CMU). It's not a certification, but there are various companies that will "appraise" your organization to various levels of CMMI, such as level 2 and level 3. (I believe CMMI level 1 is an animalistic, Hobbesian free-for-all that nobody aspires to. In other words, everybody is at least CMMI level 1, even if you've never heard of CMMI before.) I'm definitely not an expert, but I believe that an organization can be appraised for CMMI levels within different scopes of work: i.e. service delivery, software development, foobaring, etc. My question is focused on the software development appraisal: is an organization that has been appraised to CMMI Level X for software projects more likely to finish a software project on time and on budget than another organization that has not been appraised to CMMI Level X? However, in the absence of hard data about software-oriented CMMI, I'd be interested in the effect that CMMI appraisals have on other activities as well. I originally asked the question because I've seen various studies conducted on software (e.g. the essays in The Mythical Man Month refer to numerous empirical studies, as does McConnell's Code Complete), so I know that there are organizations performing empirical studies of software development.

• View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden.
