• How to know what you don't know?

  Is there a way how to recognize that you don't know something? For example, I had some hard realizations: I didn't know that criticism isn't a good way to teach your friends. I realized that after reading How to Win Friends & Influence People. I didn't know about the fundamental needed for an indutive bias in machine learning. If I have read Mitchell's Machine Learning book early, I would know it. I haven't found it mentioned in other books and papers. Sorry if the question is too generic. The question could also mean: How to know that you are missing something important about your programming language?

• PartCover code details

  I am using PartCover 2.2/2.3(trying with both) on win 7 x64. After generating report and selecting view coverage details, I can see for each method the code coverage. When I click on a method I see on the right list with block, block length, visit count and has source(set to yes). However, it doesn't fill the code like shown here http://www.csharpcity.com/using-partcover-and-nunit-for-code-coverage/. I haven't checked anything, everything is default. Can you tell me how I can see the coverage code? Thank you

• How to compare two TXT files before send it to SQL

  I have to handle TXT dat files which coming from one embed device, My problem is in that device always sending all captured data but I want to take only difrences between two sending and do calculation on them. After calculation I send it to SQL using bulkinsert function. I want to extract data which is different according to first file I got from device. Lats say that device first time device send data like this in some.dat (ASCII) file 0000199991 0000199321 0000132913 0000232318 0000312898 On second calls to get data from device it is going to return all again (previous and next captured records) something like this 0000199991 0000199321 0000132913 0000232318 0000312898 9992129990 8782999022 2323423456 But this time I do want only to calculate and pass trough data added after first insert. • Textarea to paragraphs

  When I have to render textarea content to the front end I usually pass it thru a function that converts newlines to <br/> tags and double newlines signal paragraph tags so blocks of text get surrounded by <p> and </p> tags. To save time I usually use a ready made PHP function from the wordpress codebase. You can get the link from the man himself: http://ma.tt/scripts/autop/ If you check it out you'll see it does some heavy lifting with about 20 regular expressions. I know I could use a wysiwyg editor (like TinyMCE or CKEditor) that can format the data on the client and then send it to the server (most of them add <p>..</p> tags by default) but I want to know the experience of others in handling raw textarea input and then displaying it on the front end.

• WebKit and npapi and mingw-w64

  Hi, The problem is the following: On Windows x64, pointers are 64-bit, but type long is 32-bit. MSVC doesn't seem to care, and even omits warnings about pointer truncation on the default warning level. Since recently, there is a GCC that target x86_64-w64-mingw32, or better Windows x64 native. GCC produces errors when pointers are truncated (which is the logical thing to do...), and this is causing trouble in WebKit and more specifically, the Netscape Plugin API: First, there's the files (I can only post one hyperlink...): http://trac.webkit.org/browser/trunk/WebCore/ bridge/npapi.h -- defines uint32 as 32-bit int type (~line 145) plugins/win/PluginViewWin.cpp -- casts Windows window handles to 32-bit int, truncating them (~line 450) My proposed fix was to change the uint32 casts to uintptr_t, which makes GCC happy, but still puts a 64-bit value in a uint32 (=unsigned long). I have no clue how to solve this, because clearly WebKit is happy truncating pointers on Win64... How can I solve this the right way? Thanks!

• Open a document from library Word opened but the contents is not loaded

  [Environment] Server Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 Client Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0 Microsoft Office 2003 Hello~ Today I received a call from one of my client and she said that she received an alert, "Ambiguous name detected: tempDDE" when attemping to open a doc from library. So I googled some and found solutions from MS and others and modified from Normal.dot to Normal1.dot. But after that, when I opened it again from library another problem happend and it is the doc contents is not loaded. When I click the link of doc, then the WIN?WORD.exe pops up but the contents of the document is not showing up (Silent). I tried some Open the doc file using Word Open Menu (Library Link) = Worked Get the url of the file and open it uing using Word Open Menu = Worked Add the url to Trusted Site = Done but not helped Any advices are welcomed. I also want to include the hierachly structure of the categories. So if we have a leave node, recusivly go up to the top node. • Dojo load time extremely slow on iis

  I am currently working on a project that is using Dojo as the js framework. Its a rather rich ui and as such is using (and thus loading) a lot of different .js files for the dojo plug-ins When run on an apache server running on a mac, the files (all around 1k) are served very quickly (1 or 2 ms) and the page loads pretty fast (<5 seconds) When run on IIS on Win 7, the files are served at an unbelievably slow rate (150ms - 1s), thus causing the page to take up to 3 minutes to load. I have searched the internet to try to find a solution and have come up empty. Anyone have any ideas?

• What is the best IDE?

  Hello. As a not so experienced man in programming, I start to use netbeans PLATFORM. And I am really impressed by its power (for rich desktop app). I have been learning the programming in another way on university. I have never thought that something as powerful as nb Platform exists. My idea was that 30 people work on some rich desktop app for more than year to make it "beta". Now I know, that it is much more easier. But, I have never be satisfied with my own opinions about "something is best". I am still looking for better mouse trap. So the question is: What is most powerful IDE you know? (it does not strongly depends on language, it means if some combination of language/IDE is really powerful, feel free to answer.)

• Timeline graph - how to handle "time gaps"?

  I've been working with Google chart API and annotated timeline. Drawing graphs is fine. I have no problem. However, I need to draw a timeline graph for share prices. And as you may know, share prices are meaningful only between certain times (e.g. from 10AM to 4PM, when the market opens and closes). How do I change the Google timeline graph so that on X-Axis, the range is from 10AM-4PM? Right now, it just draws a long constant line between 4PM till 10AM next day before prices start to move again. Man, I hope that makes sens. (Google finance chart seems to do it).   The HTML5 specifications states that setTimeout can be run without the additional "timeout" argument which is supposed to say after how many milliseconds will the function "handler" be scheduled. handle = window . setTimeout( handler [, timeout [, arguments ] ] ) Schedules a timeout to run handler after timeout milliseconds.   I was wondering how you can give your website customers the confidence that you are not tinkering with the database values. I am planning on running a website which falls in the realm of an online game. There is some kind of credit system involved that people have to pay for. Now I was wondering how sites like this ensure there customers that there is no foul play in the database itself. As I am the database admin i can pretty much change all the values from within without anyone knowing i did. Hence letting someone win that does not rightfully is the winner. Is it maybe an option to decrypt en encrypt the credits people have so i can't change them. Or is there maybe a company i can hire that checks my company for foul play.

• ASP.NET MVC 3 - What features do you want to see?

  I know a bunch of people that are really enjoying the improvements that ASP.NET MVC 2 made over the first release. I have just started to migrate our MVC 1 project over and so far areas has totally cleaned up the subfolder mess we had in our large scale application. As I dive deeper into all the improvements and changes that were made I still keep thinking to myself man it would be nice if they had x in this release. For isntance, I would love it if they had some sort of dependency injection built in instead of having to use third party solutions. My real question is now that ASP.NET MVC 2 is out in the wild, what features do want/wish the team had implemented and hope they will implement for ASP.NET MVC 3?

• Creating GUI using XML file in C#

  How can I create automatic GUI using XML file in C#? Should I write a parser for the file and define a sort of "protocol" for the file's structure, and after the parse - create the GUI controls manually (respective to the data in the files)? Or is there a better way? Is there a tool, or a built-in code in the .NET environment which can do that for me automatically? (I am currently working with win forms, but I am willing to consider any other technology - as long as it's supported in MONO, since the code should be portable to Linux as well).

• Space-based architecture?

  One chapter in Pragmatic Programmer recommends looking at a blackboard/space-based architecture + a rules engine as a more flexible alternative to a traditional workflow system. The project I'm working on currently uses a workflow engine, but I'd like to evaluate alternatives. I really feel like a SBA would be a better solution to our business problems, but I'm worried about a total lack of community support/user base/venders/options. JavaSpaces is dead, and the JINI spin-off Apache River seems to be on life support. SemiSpace looks perfect, but it's a one-man show. The only viable solution seems to be GigaSpaces. I'd like to hear your thoughts on space based architecture and any experiences you've had with real world implementations.

• Debugging android application on HTC Hero

  Is it possible to connect the ADB with an HTC Hero? I tried following the instructions for the Win USB driver but when I try to install the driver I just get a generic message saying that there was a problem installing the driver. Looking at the supported devices, the HTC Hero isn't listed. Is this even possible? As a note, I've tried removing drivers and then re-adding using USBDeview and I've also tried adding in the line ";HTC Hero %USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0FFE.DeviceDescRelease%=androidusb.Dev, USB\Vid_0bb4&Pid_0ffe&Rev_0100" in the inf file for the driver.

• Where to start with Direct2d?

  Interested in learning Direct2d to create a Windows 8 app, but after 2 hours of research I'm thoroughly confused. Samples like this (Creating a Simple Direct2D Application) seem to assume you know what an HWND and HRESULT is, and how the Windows API works in general. My question is this: do you need an understanding of the Win API, COM, OLE, and all this other Windows stuff in order to get a good grasp on Direct2d/3d? All the other barebones tutorials assume that you know all this stuff and I don't really know where to start. The startup D2D project in VS 2012 gives you a bunch of files but there's no main or WinMain... How does this program even start?

• Colour output piped to less

  Operating system: Mac OS 10.6.2 I'd like to be able to see colour output when piping certain commands through less. Two examples: I've got ls aliased to ls --color=auto, so I'd like to be able to see colour when I do this: ls -l | less I've also got the color extension turned on in Mercurial, so I'd like to see colour output from: hg diff | less and hg st | less After some googling, it seems like some versions of less support either -r or -R to make this work, but no dice for me. I can't see anything in the man page that looks like what I need. (-r or -R SEEM to be the right options, but again, they don't seem to work)

• OS X contains heapsort in stdlib.h which conflicts with heapsort in sort library

  I'm using Ariel Faigon's sort library, found here: http://www.yendor.com/programming/sort/ I was able to get all my code working on Linux, but unfortunately, when trying to compile with GCC on Mac, its default stdlib.h contains another heapsort, which unfortunately results in a conflicting types error. Here's the man page for Apple heapsort: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man3/heapsort.3.html Commenting out the heapsort in the sort library header causes a whole heap of problems. (pardon the pun) I also briefly thought of commenting out my use of stdlib.h, but I use malloc and realloc, so that won't work at all. Any ideas?

• How do I program an AVR Raven with Linux or a Mac?

  This tutorial for programming these starts with programming the Ravens and Jackdaw with a Windows box. Can I do those initial steps with avrdude on a Linux or OS X machine instead? If so, how? Is there any risk of bricking the hardware if I just try? I have a USB JTAG ICE MKii clone, which is supposed to work for this. I'm totally new to AVR, but very experienced with C/C++ programming on Linux or OS X, up to and including kernel programming... so any hint at all would be appreciated, I can read man pages, but only if I know what I'm looking for.

• How to read integer in Erlang?

  I'm trying to read user input of integer. (like cin nInput; in C++) I found io:fread bif from http://www.erlang.org/doc/man/io.html, so I write code like this. {ok, X} = io:fread("input : ", "~d"), io:format("~p~n", [X]). but when I input 10, the erlang terminal keep giving me "\n" not 10. I assume fread automatically read 10 and conert this into string. How can I read integer value directly? Is there any way to do this? Thank you for reading this.
