  Is there a preferred way to create base images for Debian-based customized installations? We are currently going with multistrap but although it's better than hand-crafted chroot stuff, it still has a lot of edges and corners. Is there a more reliable and less error-prone way to produce a root filesystem of a Debian installation with some additional .debs installed? (I don't want to send out a Debian installer with a preseed file though.) Addendum 1: To clarify things a bit: We are delivering some kind of software appliance to our customers. That is, a debian operating system, with some additional software packages -- both our own and third-party ones -- and some configuration changes. To ease the installation process, we have an installer that does nothing more than partitioning, copying files to the partitions and setting up grub. So it's basically an image-based installer. So we are basically running the debian installation ourselves and just distribute the already installed operating system. The question is about the installation part. I want to have that as easy and robust as possible, and of course, it should be an automated process.

  The battery back-up (BBU) model: admin enables write-back cache with BBU writes are cached to the RAID controller's RAM (major performance benefit) the battery saves uncommitted and cached data in the event of a power loss (reliability) If I lose power and come back within a day or so, my data should be both complete and uncorrupted. The downside to this is that, if the battery is dead or low, OR EVEN IF IT IS IN A RELEARN CYCLE (drain/charge loops to ensure the battery's health), the controller reverts to write-through mode and performance will suffer. What's more, the relearn cycles are usually automated on a schedule which may or may not happen in the middle of big traffic. So, that has to be manually disabled and manually scheduled for off-hours if it's a concern. Annoying either way. NV caches have capacitors with a sufficient charge to commit any uncommitted-to-disk data to flash. Not only is that more survivable in longer loss situations, but you don't have to concern yourself with battery death, wear-out, or relearning. All of that sounds great to me. What doesn't sound great to me is the prospect of that flash module having an issue, though. What if it's completely hosed? What if it's only partially hosed? A bit corrupted at the edges? Relearn cycles can tell when something like a simple battery is failing, but is there a similar process to verify that the flash is functional? I'm just far more trusting of a battery, warts and all. I know the card's RAM can fail, the card itself can fail - that's common territory, though. In case you didn't guess, yeah, I've experienced a shocking-to-me amount of flash/SSD/etc. failure :)

• Is it possible to ack nagios alerts from the terminal on a remote workstation?

  I have nagios alerts set up to come through jabber with an http link to ack. Is is possible there is a script I can run from a terminal on a remote workstation that takes the hostname as a parameter and acks the alert? ./ack hostname The benefit, while seemingly mundane, is threefold. First, take http load off nagios. Secondly, nagios http pages can take up to 10-20 seconds to load, so I want to save time there. Thirdly, avoiding slower use of mouse + web interface + firefox/other annoyingly slow browser. Ideally, I would like a script bound to a keyboard shortcut that simply acks the most recent alert. Finally, I want to take the inputs from a joystick, buttons and whatnot, and connect one to a big red button bound to the script so I can just ack the most recent nagios alert by hitting the button lol. (It would be rad too if the button had a screen on the enclosure that showed the text of the alert getting acked lol) Make fun of me all you want, but this is actually something that would be useful to me. If I can save five seconds per alert, and I get 200 alerts per day I need to ack, that's saving me 15 minutes a day. And isn't the whole point of the sysadmin to automate what can be automated? • How to manage enterprise network of Linux machines?

  I work at the university. In my institute we have six computer laboratories used for teaching. Each lab has almost 20 computers, which gives over 100 machines total. Computers have either Windows XP or Windows 7 Eneterprise operating system. We use Symantec Ghost to manage all the computers. Each computer has a Ghost client installed, which allows to control computers over network. Every six months we restore a master image on one of the computers in a lab, update that image and distribute it over the network to all computers in a laboratory. Thanks to Ghost client this is done automatically with just a few clicks. Recently I suggested that it would be good to have Linux installed in the laboratories. The administrators were concerned that we would not be able to manage that many computers if each would have to be updated manually. The question is: how to manage such a huge network of Linux machines in an automated way? To make the description of our network more complete I'll add that all students have their accounts (about few thousand users) on a central server. These are accessed via LDAP. To use a computer in laboratory each student has to log in using his own account.

• NOTEPAD++ Need macro or typeitin for automation of large lists

  I'm sure there is a way to do this but I can not seem to figure it out. I will try my best to explain this. I have a list with 20,000 lines in notepad++. I have two tabs open in notepad++. The right side tab is the main list. The left side tab is what needs to be added to the beginning of each line in the right tab. Here is an image of my notepad++ to give you a better understanding. I need to be able to do the following in an automated way as I have over 20,000 lines to do this way. copy line 1 of tab 'new 7' switch to tab 'new 6' paste clipboard(line 1 of tab 'new 7') at beginning of line 1 tab 'new 6' switch back to tab 'new 7' copy line 2 of tab 'new 7' switch to tab 'new 6' paste clipboard(line 2 of tab 'new 7') at beginning of line 2 tab 'new 6' I have both pasteitin and typeitin download but if i need some other program/app or if it's built in to notepad++ that would be great. I need to do this by the program itself or for me to only have to press a button to do each of these.

  Trying OCR with Tess4J and able to make it work as a standalone application on 64 bit windows. I am using eclipse for the same. Now I am trying to create a war of the same code and deploy it in Tomcat7 and call the api using a servlet. • Show Recent Documents in Sharepoint

  Hello, I want to display the list of recently added documents to any (or a few) library in a Sharepoint site. Unfortunately, there is no Content Query Web Part in the Web Part list. Also, I can't deploy any custom code. I came up with the idea, to create workflows for each library, which will copy the uploaded document to a "Recent Documents" library. But my client does not want this solution, saying that it will increase the storage usage. He also says that he saw this done in another Sharepoint site and insists on that the whole thing shouldn't be a problem, cause it's a basic Sharepoint function. Perhaps he is right, perhaps he is not. Either way, I'm to solve this. Thank you.

• Deployment Error: Silverlight 4.0 w/WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET MVC 2 App

  I've got an MVC 2 App with an RIA Services link to a Silverlight Application. On my local machine, all is well, but when I deploy to Discount ASP servers, neither the MVC controller nor the WCF RIA services called from silverlight function: A silverlight datagrid gets a load error: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.DomainOperationException: Load operation failed for query... The remote server returned an error NotFound. In the MVC page where I had a simple table that worked prior to adding an EF model and DomainDataSource, I now get the error: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. This is very similar to an issue I had before, but after upgrading from the betas of WCF/Silverlight 4, but the fix I had added there doesn't seem to work any longer. • ASP.NET PageMethods and The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed

  So, I'm using URL routing with WebForms. I run locally through the Visual Studio web server, and everything is hunky-dory. I deploy locally to IIS (XP, so it's IIS5), and therefore I need to make sure that I have my app wildcard mapped so the URL routing is handled properly. However, doing this makes all my PageMethods fail with this message: The HTTP verb POST used to access path is not allowed Something like /default.aspx/SendMessage does not work. I've seen solutions that exclude .svx and .asmx files, however, since this is a page method, this is a .aspx file. I know the solution is to move these files outside of .aspx, however, I have quite a few functions throughout the site in these various files. I guess I could create a single web service, and have all the functions there, however, I'm curious if there's a quick and easy way to fix this? Thanks all, -Steve

  I'm working with: seam 2.2.2 + hibernate + richfaces + jboss 5.1 + postgres I have an module which needs to load some data from the database. Easy.   I've got a rather large SQL Server 2005 database that is under constant development. Every so often, I either get a new developer or need to deploy wide-scale schema changes to the production server. My main concern is deploying schema + data updates to developer machines from the "master" development copy. Is there some built-in functionality or tools for publishing schema + data in such a fashion? I'd like it to take as little time as possible. Can it be done from within SSMS?   We're trying to work out a deployment strategy for an internal tool that we're creating. It's a control that uses a set of 3rd party libraries to communication with a specific type of server. So I have a class library built that uses these libraries. I was looking to deploy a silverlight application that uses our library, which in turn uses a set of 3rd party libraries. When trying to reference the 3rd party libraries, I get the "library can not be referenced because it was not built as a silverlight library". The type of project I'm trying to build is a silverlight application - not a dll library or anything else. Is it possible to create a silverlight application using libraries created outside of silverlight?

  I have been succesfully using the command line database deployment tool VSDBCMD on my dev and test environments but the tool fails in our integration environmrnt. I am using the VS 2010 version of the tool. The servers have all of the prerequisites including: .net 4.0 sql server compact edition 3.5 sp1 (as well as the full edition of 2008) sql server 2008 server management objects sql server 2008 native client sql server system clr types msxml 6 all of the dependent DLLs included in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\desktop*.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5*.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSTSDB\Deploy**. The only reference to this error that I have been able to find has to do with a bug in the VS 2008 edition when the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0 key is missing. In my case the 10.0 version of the key exists. Has anyone else encountered this?

  I'm using FSharp.Compiler.CodeDom to dynamically create F# classes. The problem is, that I have both VS2008 and VS2010 on my computer side-by-side (they works fine), and using F# in this configuration is buggy at best: If I don't install InstallFSharp.msi, then under VS2008 the built classes complain about not finding FSharp.Core (even if they're referenced) If I install InstallFSharp.msi, then under VS2008 the built classes will use the F# built for VS2010, and will throw a binary-incompatibility exception, because it will load the .net4 variant: FSC: error FS0219: The referenced or default base CLI library 'mscorlib' is binary- incompatible with the referenced F# core library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft F#\v4.0\FSharp.Core.dll'. Consider recompiling the library or making an explicit reference to a version of this library that matches the CLI version you are using. If I replace the F# found at the previous location to the separately installed dll-s, then of course VS2010 will complain about binary-incompatibility Am I overlooking something, or they won't simply work for a shared environment like this? This might mean real problems when I deploy the applications. Thanks

  Hi all, I created an MSI InstalScript Project where i deploy a web based (ASP.NET) precompiled project copying the files during installation in the \inetpub\wwwroot\projectnamefolder, creating an AppPool and the virtual dir of course in the IIS. The setup works great in windows XP Pro (SP3 i used). But soon as i try in Windows 7 (tried Ultimate and Home Premium) i get a -1603 Fatal Error during installation...Windows Installer Help (MSI.chm) or MSDN for more info.... Dying to fix this... [Edit] I think error occurs when trying to create the Application in the IIS. [FIXED] Enable 32 Bit Apllications needs to be true when creating Application Pools through InstallShield in a 64 bit OS!

But strange error occurs at Server 2008 R2: When .ascx file has header that uses generic type: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>" %> Server reports Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>'. But when I declare somewhere in .cs file type like public class AA : System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel> { } and use it instead in <%@ Control header. Then it works as it should. Am I missing something?

  I am using WSPBuilder to create and deploy my web part from a user control, as shown here. This works perfectly well, but I have added another user control to the project. I am adding it in page_init by going the Page.LoadControl("~/_controltemplates/MyControl.ascx"); route. It builds successfully, but after adding it to the page, I get The referenced file '/MyControl.ascx' is not allowed on this page. This control is in the ControlTemplates folder in the hive. In the web.config for this sharepoint 2007 site, all items within _controltemplates are listed as safe, as shown here <SafeControl Src="~/_controltemplates/*" IncludeSubFolders="True" Safe="True" AllowRemoteDesigner="True" /> How do I get the ascx file to be allowed on the page and get this webpart to display successfully?

  I inherited a web application that makes calls to a web service. It is being developed in VS2008 SP1 and deployed to IIS6 (2k3 Server R2). Since I upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise RTM, the following line gets added to my Web.config: <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> The problem is that when I deploy this application to my web server I get the following error: The element 'transport' cannot contain child element 'extendedProtectionPolicy' because the parent element's content model is empty I can remove the line and it will work, but its a pain and I forget sometimes to remove it again (VS2008 adds seems to add it back whenever I load the solution!!). Is there anything that can be done?   Hi, we have a VSTO outlook add-in we'd like to silently deploy to everyone via AD. I'm signing the App with a "Code signing" certificate (requested certmgr from AD). If I add this certificate to my Trusted Publishers, then I can silently install the signed app via the VSTOInstaller.exe (with the /S switch). We don't want to have to install my certificate as a trusted publisher on everyone's machine - we'd like to be able to say that any code signed by a certificate issued within our AD is trusted. Is there some way to do this?

• Hooking into AppInitialize with WCF service

  Hi, Im having issues with my WCF service. I need to do a windsor container injection pre application_start and noticed i can use the AppInitialise method. It works on visual studio debug but when I deploy to IIS the code does not get fired.. • iPhone SDK "loading" on Titanium Developer

  Hi, I have tried this question on the site of Titanium and several tweets to their account, but they either ignore me or refuse to answer. I want to start using their framework, but for some reason the iPhone SDK is always "loading" when in the "TEST & PACKAGE" tab. Have you guys found a fix for this? I have: Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Titanium Developer 1.2.1 iPhone SDK 3.2 All the certificates "blah blah" from Apple because I am able to test and deploy apps on my device using XCode. Help please :)
