  I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the actual de facto standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

• Can we have Linked Servers when using NTLM?

  I don't have access to the Active Directory settings, nor do I have access to change anything on the linked server. From everything I've read, it seems like this means I cannot use Kerberos - which is a big problem, because I don't know how to use a linked server without it. Is there any way to connect to a linked server without Kerberos? Exact problem description When I connect to the linked server while sitting in front of my server, it works fine; but when I try to connect to the linked server from any other computer (delegating through my server), it gives the error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456) It seems that this is the "double-hop problem," and the usual solution is to enable Kerberos, which requires access to AD and the linked server. I get the same error when I set security to "Be made using the login's current security context," and I can't use "Be made using this security context" because that appears to use SQL-authentication (which is not enabled on the linked server) instead of NTLM

• ESXi 5 network performance is slow

  We just did a fresh install of ESXi 5 on a host that was running ESX 4 before. Nothing has changed hardware wise. After the upgrade network performance is much slower. Even copying a big file from one VM to another VM within same virtual switch is slower compared to other hosts that are running ESX 4. Network cards are auto-negotiating at 1Gbps as were on ESX 4 prior to upgrade. All settings are default and I haven't played with Advanced Settings at all. Before opening a case with vmware, wanted to know if I am missing something or if others have experienced similar issues and found a fix?

• Good low-cost SSL certificate providers

  We need an SSL certificate to facilitate remote access and administration by a small number of employees. I don't want to have to train a bunch of non-technical users to install a self-published cert on their home computers, so I'd prefer to purchase one from a well-trusted provider. We won't be using it for any kind of e-commerce or things like that, so it seems hard to justify paying the prices demanded by some of the big-name providers. Who are some good low-cost providers to consider? What are the important differences between the offerings that are available at different price points? (And is the certificate business really as much of a racket as it seems?)

• Dell e4300 Random Beeps

  I’ve noticed that my Dell e4300 Laptop will randomly beep every now and then. The symptoms are virtually identical to the issue described here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19314488.aspx Any ideas why? I thought it might be related to hard drive activity so I downloaded the western digital disk utility and all tests check out fine. It’s not a big deal and it only beeps once every few days. I just want to make sure there isn’t a larger problem looming. =) -M

  Hi all, I had this Warning with mxtoolbox. I know that it's not necessarily a big problem, but since we are having lots of issue with email delivery, I want to check everything. I have a Exchange server 07 + Sonicwall. My FQDN is office.mydomain.ca for send/receive connectors. When I try : telnet office.mydomain.ca 25 -- 220 MYSERVER.mydomain.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready at Fri, 7 May 2010 10:34:36 -0400 I can change my SMTP Banner in the Sonicwall, but I don't know what to write, if there is a specific syntax or what can be the consequence if it doesn't work. • Eclipse making background video skip with almost every click of the mouse

  The problem is i like to listen to videos online (mostly or all flash video) while programming and never had any problems until i started using eclipse, now every time i do just about anything other than type, it makes the video skip/freeze really bad and is really annoying. I have never had this happen using visual studio, netbeans, or adobe flash for that matter, unless i was compiling or doing something that hogs the processor. Are there any settings that might could fix this its getting really annoying. it happens almost every time i even click "find" on the find pop-up window and it is not like it is having to search a big file or anything it is only 700 lines, with honestly only about 1/2 that have content on them. Any ideas?

• Coldfusion 8 crash

  I have a very big problem with coldfusion 8 on Windows server 2008 with IIS7. They are in production server and sometimes the the site is not available, I have to manually end the jrun.exe process from task manager and then the site is available. I realize that the process jrun.exe has abut 1.3Gb of memory used at the time it crash's. It happens 2-3 times a day, I have looking in the coldfusion logs and I did not found anything strange beside some warnings that some job exceeded the 300 sec of time execution. I forgot to mention that coldfusion is a 32bit application but the windows is a 64bit, this may be the problem? I'm not such good in coldfusion, so If someone knows how to troubleshoot please let me know Thanks!

• Making Google Talk messages appear on all logged in clients

  We're using Google Talk as our unofficial-official chat client around the office at work. One thing that poses a big problem almost every day is the fact that Google Talk only sends a message to the clients that you last used. Even though you may be logged into GTalk on 3 different machines, if you start talking on one machine, that becomes your "active" machine, and if you go to another machine, you will still only get messages on the last active machine. Is there a way that you can force Google Talk to send messages to ALL logged in clients, regardless of which client you are actively using? That way, you don't miss any messages during the time between when you get up from the active machine and then make the new client "active".

• How can I have my Windows keymap on Mac?

  On Mac, to get a "{" for example, you have to press OPTION key plus 8 to get a curly brace. But on Windows it is ALT-GR plus 7. Another example: On Windows I can press CTRL and Backspace to remove one whole word. On Mac it is OPTION + Backspace. Is there a way I can remap these Mac-driven behavior to be more Windows-like? Because this is, as a very long Windows user, a big burden on me to have such a different keyboard layout. Edit: I'm using a german keyboard layout.

• coordinating a script to run on only one of identical load-balanced servers

  I have two identically configured CentOS 5 servers (possibly more in the future). I need to run a cron job on any one of them and that it'll run only on one of them. I know about RedHat Cluster Suite (we use it on other servers), but it's a too big a gun to use for this task, plus it doesn't really behave well for less than three nodes. Is there anything light-weight I can use for that? The servers can communicate with each other directly. I suppose I can develope something over ssh or nrpe (two server which are already installed on these servers), but I was wondering whether there is something already available.

• Toshiba Satellite laptop connected to HDTV

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6014 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit connected to a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV with an HDMI cable. The laptop has a 16" display and the screen resolution is set to the maximum/recommended of 1366x768. The display output is set to "LCD+HDMI". The display looks fine on the laptop screen but on the TV it is not a "full screen" display, it leaves a good 3" black border all around all 4 edges. When I switch the display to "HDMI only", it is now too big for the TV screen and some of my desktop icons are no longer visible off to the side. What is the best way to set this up? I guess that since a 16" and 42" displays have different native resolutions, a LCD+HDMI mode is defaulting to the optimal size for the 16". But when I set it to HDMI Only, what is the appropriate resolution for a 42" full screen display? Thanks

• How to securely generate memorable passwords?

  Whenever I need new passwords I use some tools to generate those, preferable memorable passwords, but I've been wondering how secure this might actually be. Using The xkcd random number generator is probably pretty bad, cat /dev/random is probably pretty good, but generating memorable passwords seems a bit more tricky. Whenever a program generates a memorable password, it only uses a subset of the total password space available, and it is not clear to me how big this space is. Of course a long password should help in this case, but if the `memorable' part of the program is too predictable, your passwords are not very good in the end. TL;DR: how secure are memorable password generators, given the fact that `memorable' passwords are a subset of total password space? Some tools I know of: pwgen -- seems ok, but passwords are not too memorable Mac Password Assistant - generates memorable passwords but it is unclear to me how this works.

• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

• Debian Squeeze Upgrade Breaks Apache SSL

  I upgraded my Debian from Lenny to Squeeze. BIG MISTAKE. Now I get: [Tue Feb 08 16:34:57 2011] [error] Server should be SSL-aware but has no certificate configured [Hint: SSLCertificateFile] ((null):0) littered throughout /var/log/apache2/error.log. How to fix? Looking through a mess of forums it is easy to see that Apache changed the way it reads configurations around 2.2.13. Great. But not great for me or the millions of other web administrators who now have web servers that simply won't start, and an error message that says NOTHING about the problem or how to fix. Anybody else actually solved this issue? I had perfectly working virtual servers with SSL before (for years actually).

• Website pages very slow to load on first access

  I have a production web server that makes sites to be very slow when load for first time. After the first time all connections are normal and fast. In the following screen you can see the first test I have run for a random site in my server: and here you can see the result of the second time request: As you can see there is a big change in the second load of the same page.   I was setting the MySQL Replication for master - slave/master - slave and Replication for master - slave its works fine but when i have enable this option in my.cnf log-slave-updates=1 for updating the master bin log my replications is starting be slower and the time Seconds_Behind_Master is growing. I use innodb engine but the DB is big. Any idea how i can improve the replication, looks like the network is not the issue. Also i was think to use binlog_format=ROW but master is using default setting for replication 'statement' and i cant reset master ;) Thanks ...

  Hi All, I am very new to the VMware world. We have VMWare vCenter 4 in the production environment but we have created multiple VLAN through Cisco Switch. I want know, how I can create an isolated test environment for software testing purpose only, so anything will happen in that test vLan will not make trouble in the production environment. "Host-only networking" is the solution or there is a better way to achieve this result? My requirements A. Hosts should be able to access Internet and a Network Share drive but not Production network B. Hosts should connect each other inside the Virtual LAN C. I should be able to take automatic or periodic backup or snapshoot and deploy snapshot when necessary. Whatever your answer is, please give me steps, how to do, if possible. • How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

• Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

However all good wikis seem to require a web-server of some kind; has anyone come across a good desktop wiki editor/viewer that work with plain-text files, and allow me to work with wiki text files just like any other document file type (note: not a desktop wiki running inside a local webserver) Before you rush to suggest (I hope!)   What is the best way to backup data on content servers? For example, I have 15 servers that just have content, no applications running on it. Each server has a 250 GB hard drive. So, it's a pretty big amount of data. All the data have external access (via HTTP). So, the question is: what methodology is best in my case?   I know that Yahoo and Google mail support 25MB email attachments. I have an idea from somewhere that 10MB email messages are generally supported by modern email systems. So if I'm sending an email between two arbitrary users on the internet, what's the safe upper bound on message size? 1MB? 10MB? 25MB? I know that one answer is 'don't send big emails, use some sort of drop box'. I'm looking for a guideline if you are limited to only using regular smtp email.

If increase the rate SYNFLOOD_RATE = "140/s" or more.. the website response very fast.. be side have bad effect of server load increase so fast normal 20 and may be up to few hundred in peck time .. my need is response time fast but load still low.. please help thanks ps: server runing nginx frontend, apache, mysql, php ,, the home page has around 70 elements which will cached in browser in fist time access..
