• Can I distort a bitmap image in Flash?

  Hi, what I would like to do is to take a loaded GIF file as a Bitmap, and then distort it by stretching and shrinking parts of it, so it would look like it got squished up against the screen. I'm pretty sure that there's no easy way in Flash to go beyond scaling and shearing, but I wonder if there might be some simple techniques to accomplish this kind of effect. By the way, I've also thought of pre-deforming the images in GIMP and saving them there, but I can't find a simple way to do it without learning their scripting language. Thanks for your help!

• Why is rails called a dsl?

  Recently, when I tried to explain why Rails is a DSL to an intern at my organisation, I was not able to articulate my reasonings to the effect I would like to. Maybe I do not understand the space well enough to teach the nuances. Redirecting him to Martin Fowler' article or the google ranked one InfoQ or other material has not helped much either. Can some explain why Rails is a DSL with an example / parallel situation which is not voodoo stuff for someone who is fairly new to the world of code? Understanding the ideology might also help in elaborating the intricacies of the rails ecosystem?

• Why does code need to be reloaded in Rails 3?

  I am a former PHP developer learning Rails and Sinatra. In PHP, every page request loaded all of the required files. If I changed some code and refreshed the page, I could be sure that the code was fresh. In Rails 3, Controller code is fresh on every request. However, if I modify any code in the /lib folder, I need to restart the server so the changes take effect. Why does this happen? Is it something to do with the way Ruby is designed? Is Rails doing some optimizations to avoid reloading code on every request? Thanks!

  I have a function glutKeyboardFunc(keyboard), where keyboard has: void keyboard(unsigned char key, int x, int y){ float alpha = 1.0; switch(key){ case 'c': glClearColor(1,0,0,alpha); printf("success"); break; } } This is a summary of the function; it works properly, but only once some other action has occurred. For instance, the printf statement reports success immediately on keystroke 'c', but the background color does not become active until I click somewhere else on the canvas. I want all keystrokes to have an immediate effect.

• How to override <base> tag without removing the tag itself?

  I'm trying to add some internal links(in the format of a content table, to be able to facilitate webpage navigation) to this site in which a tag is used. Now obviously due to the base tag, every other relative tag will be relative to the base tag href. But in order for me to create this internal content table with the links pointing to different parts of the specific page, i need to get the default URL (before base tag is in effect) so the internal links can work properly. Is there a way to do get around the base tag and accomplish this? PS: if the question is unclear please don't hesitate to ask so i can reformulate Thanks in advance, :D :D

  Hi all, After I quit simulator and click build the app from XCode, the iPhone Simulator loading and my app will be install and run. But the app just show only Default image (finish the applicationDidFinishLaunching method - I logs it) and do nothing. I can't do anything in Simulator, event click the "Home" button of Simulator. But the other time, when Simulator already running, I select the "Build" button in XCode and everything is fine. Can you tell me why and how does this issue effect my app when I build it with real device? Thanks a lot!

• Persistent UDP sessions on Android

  I have a client-server app which requires me to maintain a persistent session over UDP. The goal is to maintain a path from the server to the mobile Android device no matter what route it has to the internet (WiFi or mobile network). This is achieved using a proprietary, well-tested session-management protocol over UDP. I need the phone to be able to maintain, say, a five-minute keep-alive with the server at all times. Ideally I would like to do this without maintaining any wake-locks on the device. I don't want the screen to light up every time I send a UDP to the server, for example, and I don't want to have a damaging effect on battery usage. Has anyone addressed this problem?

• When is a program limited by the memory bandwidth?

  I want to know if a program that I am using and which requires a lot of memory is limited by the memory bandwidth. When do you expect this to happen? Did it ever happen to you in a real life scenario? How can I measure the memory bandwidth that a given program is using and how do I measure the (peak) bandwidth that my system can offer? I don't want to discuss any complicated cache issues here. I'm only interested in the communication between the CPU and the memory.

  I'm a Django beginner. My site - let's call it abc.com - works fine, letting users log in and out (having originally registered via Django registratiaon). If it's relevant, my virtuahosts file has ServerName abc.com and ServerAlias www.abc.com directives. I don't want my visitors to sense that both abc.com and www.abc.com exist, and so discovered Django's prepend_www setting, which works as intended. In addition to working as intended, however, there's a side effect that disables logging in and out when visiting the www. variant of my site.

• Alternative to css3 not selector

  Are there any alternatives to the :not css3 selector that are compliant with IE8 (and quirks mode). Either in css or javascript/jquery that emulates the selector or something similar. I am using *:not as follows below. Feel free to recommend a solution that avoids the use of :not completely. @media screen { #printable { visibility: hidden; } } @media print { *:not(#printable) { visibility: hidden; } #printable { position: absolute; visibility: visible; } } Note that the use of :not is tied to the use of @media print so just using a simple jQuery solution to apply css to $(":not(#printable)") won't work without being clever. • Android:simulating 1-bit display

  I'm new to Android,trying to build a simple game which use 1-bit black and white display.the screen dimension is 160 * 80,that is 12800 pixels.I created a byte array for the "VRAM",so each time it draws,it first checks the array. The thing is that I am not drawing a point or rectangle for each pixel,I'm using 2 bitmaps(ARGB_4444,I have to use alpha channel,because of shadow effect),1 for positive and 1 for negative.So I called 12800 times drawBitmap() in the surfaceView's Draw method.I know that's silly...But even for openGL,12800 quards won't be that fast right? • Firefox 17.0.1 ignoring font-weight

  http://iamsinc.com/blog/new-producer-bonus/ For some reason Firefox 17.0.1 on my Windows 7 machine is ignoring the font-weight of the td elements. It should be normal. This works fine in Chrome, IE 7 8, & 9, but not in FF. I have also tested it on an XP machine running 17.0.1 and it works fine. The font-weight should be normal, not bold. In the second box down ($300k level), the font-weight is showing up as bold on Win 7 FF 17.0.1 which pushes the pictures outside of the box. I have even tried reducing the font-weight waaay down and it has not effect on the problematic FF browser Does anybody have a solution or even a work-around? I hate to make the pictures all smaller just to work around this. Thanks!

Is there anything that change the behavior of java application? bcz same application runs perfectly on my pc and same application does not running perfectly on client pc? and there is no problem in code, i have checked three times.

  I've done this in the past using a method similar to this: http://javascriptkit.com/javatutors/static3.shtml but I don't like the "flicker" effect as the page is scrolled and the div needs to move with the scrolling. Lately I've seen a lot of site that have an element (a div or the like I presume) that don't move when the page is scrolled but it's seemless...they're just there and it's a beautiful thing. Unfortunately I can't seem to recall where I've seen it lately to view the source and try to figure it out so I figured I'd turn here and see what all of you experts can provide as far as assistance / suggestions. • Conversion of Single to two UInt16 values in .net

  In the good old days of C. I could cast a float to an int (assuming 32 bit system), do some bit manipluation ( bitwise and, right shift, ect ), and get the upper and lower 16 bit hex representations of the floating point number, which I could then store in two short values. I'm not seeing an easy way of doing this in C#. System.Convert.ToUInt16 just does a float to int convert (even after I shift right), which leaves a vlaue of 0 if the float is less than 0, which is not the desired effect. //useless leaves me witg a value 0f 0 UIN16 s1 = (UInt16)((System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff0000) >> 16); //capture the high word UInt16 s2 = (UInt16)(System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff); //capture the low word A basic cast (UInt32) doesn't work either.

• Purpose of front() and back() in assigning values in a Queue? (C++)

  I have declared: queue<int, list<int> > Q After a series of calls: Q.push(37); Q.pop(); Q.push(19); Q.push(3); Q.push(13); Q.front(); Q.push(22); Q.push(8); Q.back(); I get: 19-3-13-22-8-NULL What I don't get is what the calls to Q.front() and Q.back() do. From what I understand, they return a reference to the first or last elements respectively, but I dont see how my list would be any different had those calls not been made. Do they have any effect? Sorry if this seems trivial, but I'm trying to figure out of those calls have a purpose, or of my professor is just trying to screw with me.

The base page handler gets the current user, and creates a login/logout url appropriately.   Here's what I have so far: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <location path="osb"> <system.webServer> <httpRedirect enabled="true" exactDestination="true" destination="http://50.63.54.135/app/osb" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" /> </system.webServer> </location> </configuration> The above redirect works, but it takes me to http://http//50.63.54.135/app/osb instead of just http://50.63.54.135/app/osb This produces an 404 error. I tried to remove "http://" from destination. Same effect. What am I missing ?

• How do (or can I) hack a gem temporarily while looking for a bug?

  I have a gem installed in my home directory on a laptop (eg not THE server). I have installed ruby 1.9.1 and also some other gems, notably right_aws - which allows access to s3, etc with ruby. All works, except there is a bug when I do a query on SimpleDB, and the returned list of items includes an item with any two byte utf-8 character in its itemName(). So I look through the sources of the right_aws gem installed on my machine, and I can see some places where I would like to test a fix. If I edit the file, save changes, (needing a password), then restart the server (script/server), it ignores my changes. I am quite new at ruby - do you have to 'compile' or other similar move to get the source code changes made take effect? I can see the edited file is changed by viewing it in terminal, etc.

• DAQ Triggers in Matlab

  I'm writing a program that detects the speed of a object by hall effect sensors that are run into MATLAB through a DAQ (MCC USB-1408FS) The problem that has arisen is that I'm using a non-stop scan technique to detect the state of one of 3 sensors. Unfortunately this means that unless the object is rotating past each sensor at the exact rate the program runs, I will see an instantaneous speed (done by comparing the time between two sensors) of zero. I need the sensors to signal the program to count when they are hit, instead of constantly scanning for the signal. How can this be done?
