  • Using Amazon S3 for multiple remote data site uploads, securely

    I've been playing about with Amazon S3 a little for the first time and like what I see for various reasons relating to my potential use case. We have multiple (online) remote server boxes harvesting sensor data that is regularly uploaded every hour or so (rsync'ed) to a VPS server. The number of remote server boxes is growing regularly and forecast to keep growing (hundreds). The servers are geographically dispersed. The servers are also automatically built, therefore generic with standard tools and not bespoke per location. The data is many hundreds of files per day. I want to avoid a situation where I need to provision more VPS storage, or additional servers every time we hit the VPS capacity limit, after every N server deployments, whatever N might be. The remote servers can never be considered fully secure due to us not knowing what might happen to them when we are not looking. Our current solution is a bit naive and simply restricts inbound rsync only over ssh to known mac address directories and a known public key. There are plenty of holes to pick in this, I know. Let's say I write or use a script like s3cmd/s3sync to potentially push up the files. Would I need to manage hundreds of access keys and have each server customized to include this (do-able, but key management becomes nightmarish?) Could I restrict inbound connections somehow (eg by mac address), or just allow write-only to any client that was running the script? ( i could deal with a flood of data if someone got into a system? ) having a bucket per remote machine does not seem feasible due to bucket limits? I don't think I want to use a single common key as if one machine is breached then potentially, a malicious hack could get access to the filestore key and start deleting for ll clients, correct? I hope my inexperience has not blinded me to some other solution that might be suggested! I've read lots of examples of people using S3 for backup, but can't really find anything about this sort of data collection, unless my google terminology is wrong... I've written more than I should here, perhaps it can be summarised thus: In a perfect world I just want to have one of our techs install a new remote server into a location and it automagically starts sending files home with little or no intervention, and minimises risk?     I have a site-to-site VPN, writeable DC in main office, Read-only DC. Today the VPN went down, but i couldnt log in to the read-only DC - the error message came up There are no logon servers to process your request. Since the RODC is a domain controller, there is no local administrator. How can i ensure that i am always able to log on to the RODC with a known account in an emergency if the writeable DC is not available?

  • Merge LVM Partition with unallocated Space

    I have a linux hard drive with three areas: /dev/hda1 - ext3 boot partition (20 MB) /dev/hda2 - lvm2 main partition (6 GB) unpartitioned space - 12 GB I would like to merge the unpartitioned space into the lvm2 partition known as /dev/hda2. I tried using GParted, but it does not support lvm2. What commands or utilities could I use to add the unpartitioned space to hda2 without losing my existing data?

  • SARA Security Auditor Alternative

    I have attempted to install and run Sara, but it seems that the software is broken. I could get it to run on 127.0.0.1, but it seems that no network packets ever leave the current computer that it is installed on. It tests for known security holes in a network. It was based on an older software SATAN. Is there another free alternative to this program? I did not see anything listed in this thread.

  • Virtual Box state not saving upon restart/reset/shutdown - reverting to an earlier state

    Every time I restart/shut down my VM in VirtualBox (image is Ubuntu 10.02), whenever I start it back up, it reverts to the state it was in after I installed Guest Additions. This is extremely frustrating as every time I make progress on a project, whenever it restarts (mostly from crashing), I have to redo mostly everything. Is this a known problem with Guest Additions or with Virtual Box in general, and if so is there some solution?

  • NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

    I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically? As best I can tell, Nessus operates via a large database of known exploits. And, as best as I can tell, Skipfish automatically generates vulnerability tests. Has anyone done a comparison of the effectiveness of these two approaches yet?

The problem happens when opening system restore only to discover 32 Windows updates deleted what you need. Can a system restore be exported somewhere?

  • Tortoise SVN appears to freeze Explorer

    When updating a repository using Tortoise SVN, Explorer on Windows XP tends to choke and freeze in regular intervals. Something like 4 seconds freeze, 1 second fluent work. I imagine this may be caused by the (too many) svn:externals? Is this a known issue? Do you know of a way to fix this?

    It is well known that it is possible to configure a DNS server to do a "catch-all" resolving on a single subdomain level, such as *.example.com. IN A x.x.x.x, so that anything.example.com maps to a single IP/CNAME. However, I need to set up an at least "level-2" wildcard sub-subdomain catch-all wildcard system so that any.thing.example.com or better, item.of.any.level.under.example.com will be resolved to a single IP. Has anyone got this working?
