    Background The idea is this: Person provides contact information for online book purchase Book, as a PDF, is marked with a unique hash Person downloads book PDF passwords are annoying and extremely easy to circumvent. The ideal process would be something like: Generate hash based on contact information Store contact information and hash in database Acquire book lock Update an "include" file with hash text Generate book as PDF (using pdflatex) Apply hash to book Release book lock Send email with book download link Technologies The following technologies can be used (other programming languages are possible, but libraries will likely be limited to those supplied by the host): C, Java, PHP LaTeX files PDF files Linux Question What programming techniques (or open source software) should I investigate to: Embed a unique hash (or other mark) to a PDF Create a collusion-attack resistant mark Develop a non-fragile (e.g., PDF -> EPS -> PDF still contains the mark) solution Research I have looked at the following possibilities: Steganography Natural Language Processing (NLP) Convert blank pages in PDF to images; mark those images; reassemble PDF LaTeX watermark package ImageMagick Steganograhy requires keeping a master copy of the images, and I'm not sure if the watermark would survive PDF -> EPS -> PDF, or other types of conversion. LaTeX creates an image cache, so any steganographic process would have to intercept that process somehow. NLP introduces grammatical errors. Inserting blank pages as images is immediately suspect; it is easy to replace suspicious blank pages. The LaTeX watermark package draws visible marks. ImageMagick draws visible marks.   • ASP.NET MVC UpdateModel doesn't update inherited public properties??

    I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() do not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. Well that leads us to believe it is as simple as that. It makes no mention of limitations with inheritance. My assumption is the methods are reflecting on the top class only, ignoring base properties, but this seems to be an ugly shortcoming, if so. SOLVED: Eep, this turned out to have nothing to do with inheritance. My base class was implemented with public fields, not properties. Switching them to formal properties (adding {get; set; }) was all I needed. This has bitten me before, I keep wanting to use simple, public fields.

  • How to install the TRIM RAID update for the Intel storage controller?

    I just found this article, that says that Intel now supports TRIM for SSDs when the Intel storage controller is in RAID mode. It links to this download page. I'm pretty excited about that, but I'm a little confused. There seem to be two sets of drivers, an executable and something that's bootable. I ran the executable. Is that just to apply the drivers to my system now, and are the bootable drivers so that if I re-format, I won't have to re-run everything? Do I need to do both? And is there a way to check if it worked? I'm running an i7 in Windows 7 (ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard) with RAID 0, if that's significant.

    We have an issue with User Profile Sync in SharePoint 2010 when the following happens: A new user is added to AD (ie DOMAIN\jdoh) The user is synched successfully to SharePoint Time passes The user's account name is changed in AD (ie because it was originally misspelled: DOMAIN\jdoe) The user is re-synced to SharePoint The behavior appears to be that the account name is not changed. In the above example, accountname will continue to be DOMAIN\jdoh in SharePoint, though other properties are synced correctly- I would assume by SID. This means that the users' my profile and mysite links still refer to the 'old' name (ie Person.aspx?accountname=Domain\jdoh). What steps should be taken to fix this in SharePoint when an account name is changed in AD?

Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, invisible watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution).     My iCal has new behavior (since upgrading to SL). Every time I get an ical attachment in Mail, the iCal app flies up in my face. I don't see any way to turn off this behavior and it's amazingly disruptive when I'm busy with other activities. Help? EDIT: I want iCal to add the invitations, so when I cmd-tab to the app those items are in the queue awaiting approval. What I am hoping to learn is how to stop the popup action forcing the application to become the top-level window.

    I have two MySQL servers configured with master-slave replication. Before we deploy a new application version we: 1) STOP SLAVE 2) Take a MySQL dump of the slave. However, if a mistake is done during the deployment of the new schema version (a table is dropped by mistake, for example), having the slave intact doesn't help. Our service is write-intensive, so we can't turn it back up until we have a master working. If we now load the mysql dump back into the master, it will take a long time during which our service remains down. What is the best-practice to recover from such a mistake? How can I setup the system so I can easily promote the slave, turn on our service and only then tend to the broken database? Mainly, I'm worried with re-syncing the slave and the master after changes are done on the slave.

    I see this error at the top of my redis.log file: Current maximum open files is 1024. maxclients has been reduced to 4064 to compensate for low ulimit. If not, what other steps do I need to perform? I am running redis 2.8.13 (tip of the tree) on Ubuntu LTS 14.04.1 (again, tip of the tree).   • How do I re-activate Windows 7 after Windows has decided it is no longer genuine after an update?

    Windows just recently decided that it was no longer genuine and it keeps telling me that I need to re-activate. However, the dialog that pops up asking me if I want to make it genuine seems to crash or give a fatal error: 0xD000006. I've looked in Properties page for My Computer in the Windows Activation section and it simply says: Status Not Available Product ID Not Available And there is no option to activate. I'd prefer to not have to reinstall Windows 7, so any leads would be greatly appreciated. I've tried re-activating using slui.exe as suggested in the answers below, but when I do that I get the following error dialog. I'm not quite sure what to do now and the thought of being on hold with Microsoft is not terribly appealing to me. Thanks.

  • How can I create/update an XML node that may or may not exist?

    Is there a method available (i.e. without me creating my own recursive method), for a given xpath (or other method of identifying the hierarchical position) to create/update an XML node, where the node would be created if it does not exist? This would need to create the parent node if it does not exist as well. I do have an XSD which includes all possible nodes. i.e. Before: <employee> <name>John Smith</name> </employee> Would like to call something like this: CoolXmlUpdateMethod("/employee/address/city", "Los Angeles"); After: <employee> <name>John Smith</name> <address> <city>Los Angeles</city> </address> </employee> Or even a method to create a node, given an xpath, wherein it will recursively create the parent node(s) if they do not exist? As far as the application (if it matters), this is taking an existing XML doc that contains only populated nodes, and adding data to it from another system. The new data may or may not already have values populated in the source XML. Surely this is not an uncommon scenario?

  • Access denied to external USB disk; update access rights fails in Windows 8

    I use to work with 2 laptops (Windows vista and Windows 7), my work files being on an external usb disk. My oldest laptop broke down, so I bought a new one. I had no option other than take Windows 8. I suspect something changed with access rights, as my external disk suffered some "access denied" problem on Windows. I was prompted (by Windows 8) somehow to fix the access rights, which I tried to do, getting to the properties - security. This process was very slow and ended up saying disk is not ready Additionally, my external usb disk somehow was not recognized anymore. Back to Windows 7, I was warned that my disk needed to be verified, which I did. In this process, some files were lost (most of them I could recover from the folder found00x, but I have some backup anyway). Also, I don't know why, but under Windows 7, all the folder showed with a lock. Then back again to Windows 8. Same problem : access denied to my disk + no way to change access rights as it gets stuck disk is not ready". Now I am pretty sure there is some kind of bug or inconsistency in Windows 8 / Windows 7. I did 2. and 3. a few times. At some point, I also got an access denied in Windows 7. I could restore access rights to the disk to "System" (properties - security - EDIT for full control to group "system". ). But then I still get the same access right pb on Windows 8, and getting stuck in the process to restore full control to "system" -- and "admin" groups. I upgraded Windows8 with the Windows8 updates available. Does not help.

Because long ago, when I installed the anti virus first, applying windows updates crashed the AV! So, I install it last. Specially 7 sp1 is critical right? But now im having doubts... Going online without an antivirus means I'm vulnerable! (I have a home router which have a small firewall but I'm not sure about it) So, whats the best thing to do? Install the anti virus first or install the updates first?

    Scenario: I have an application (C#) that expects a SQL database and login, which are set by a user. Once connected, it checks for the existence of several table and creates them if not found. I'd like to expand on this by having the program be capable of adding columns to those tables if I release a new version of the program which relies upon the new columns. Question: What is the best way to programatically check the structure of an existing SQL table and create or update it to match an expected structure? I am planning to iterate through the list of required columns and alter the existing table whenever it does not contain the new column. I can't help but wonder if there's an approach that is different or better. Criteria: Here are some of my expectations and self-imposed rules: Newer versions of the program might no longer use certain columns, but they would be retained for data logging purposes. In other words, no columns will be removed. Existing data in the table must be preserved, so the table cannot simply be dropped and recreated. In all cases, newly added columns would allow null data, so the population of old records is taken care of by having default null values. Example: Here is a sample table (because visual examples help!): id sensor_name sensor_status x1 x2 x3 x4 1 na019 OK 0.01 0.21 1.41 1.22 Then, in a new version, I may want to add the column x5. The "x-columns" are all data-storage columns that accept null.

  • Why isn't the Cache invalidated after table update using the SqlCacheDependency?

    I have been trying to get SqlCacheDependency working. I think I have everything set up correctly, but when I update the table, the item in the Cache isn't invalidated. Can you look at my code and see if I am missing anything? I enabled the Service Broker for the Sandbox database. I have placed the following code in the Global.asax file.   • Restrict Computer or Users from Internet but allow access to intranet and Windows Update / ePO?

    So this may be impossible but I've been asked to try and find something about it. So far nothing I have found is possible. I need to restrict specific machines or user accounts from regular Internet access but let them have access to the intranet portion of our network. I do not have Active Directory control, nor does anyone at my local workplace (corporate control in a different state). I have tried going through IPsec and doing this per local machine, but that system seems to have been removed from the images that are installed on these machines so that is out. So far the only other option I can think of is assigning the machines a specific ip address and removing their gateway access. This would probably work but the machines need to be able to receive updates that are being pushed to them through ePO and LanDesk. I would really like to do this on the user level because then if I need to do tech work to the machine and need internet access I can get to it but a "special" user could login and not be able to get into anything.

  • Is there some formal way to update the browser detection files for ASP.Net?

    I have an ASP.Net site on which we're using control adapters. We have the adapters mapped to a "refID" of "Default." These adapters are working fine on all browsers except Chrome and Safari. For those browsers, they do not execute. I've given up trying to figure out why -- I have a question here on SO that no one has been able to answer, and I've been researching it for days now. It's just inexplicable. I have tested the same code in my local environment, and it works just fine. Additionally, no one else can replicate my problem on other servers. It seems to be somehow confined to the machines at my client's site. Could they be somehow out-of-date? If this is the case, is there some way to "update" the .browser files? I'm half-tempted to just copy the .browser files out of the Framework directory from my machine over to theirs, but I'm curious is there's something more formal than this? Is there some other source of data that ASP.Net uses for browser detection other than these files?
