• Can I force NFS automounts to use NFSv3?

  I have a linux server that is exporting NFSv4 as well as NFSv3. I have a Fedora14 client that is defaulting to NFSv4 when automounting NFS shares off of the linux server, and it seems to be causing some problems. All my other linux clients on the network are mounting via NFSv3 without issue, so is there a way I can tell automount to mount the share via v3? I am pulling my automount maps via LDAP, with an entry in my /etc/auto.master file like so: +auto_master, so I assume it's a bit different than listing options with a regular automount map? (.i.e. /home --nfsvers=3 fileserver:/DATA)

• Any good software to help me memorize passwords?

  I'm using KeePass(X) and other tools to keep most of my passwords. However, it turns out, there is still about half a dozen passwords I'm using on regular basis that I would prefer to just remember. So, do you people know of any good programs, preferably open-source, to train yourself using a particular password and thus to memorize it? I know I can remember a 96-bit entropy password rather well if I practice entering it 3 days, 5 minutes for each day, I just want a good software to simplify the process and exclude the possibility of shouldering or otherwise leaking the password.

• Citrix ICA Client on Mac shift key doesn't work as expected

  When I'm connected to a Windows XP computer from my Mac OS X 10.6 using the Citrix ICA Client, it seems that the shift key only works for the first letter typed after pressing shift. In order to type multiple uppercase letters, like ICA, I must either press caps lock, or press and release shift before each character. I've tried switching between standard and enhanced keyboard, as well as the 'Send Special Keys Unchanged' option, but none of these seem to affect the issue. The problem doesn't occur when I switch from the Citrix window to a regular Mac window.

• How to avoid maximum Workgroup Manager connections in Mac OS X Server 10.6

  Is there a limit on the Mac OS X Server (10.6) Workgroup Manager in respect to concurrent connections to a server? I have an OS X server up and running and Open Directory configured but I am not able to log in remotely as I get the message the maximum number of connections for Workgroup Manager is already reached and I should wait for a user to disconnect. Even after a restart I get this message remotely. However, locally on the server I can start Workgroup Manager without any issues. It always lets me connect. Any advice what I need to do to make Workgroup Manager work from a remote location? I could not find any max connection setting in Server-Admin and nothing in the slapd log files. The server license says unlimited so I am quite sure it should not be a regular error message that indicates to me I should upgrade.

• Simple one-way synchronisation of user password list between servers

  Using a RedHat-derivative distro (CentOS), I'd like to keep the list of regular users (UID over 500), and group (and shadow files) pushed to a backup server. The sync is only one-way, from the main server to the backup server. I don't really want to have to deal with LDAP or NIS. All I need is a simple script that can be run nightly to keep the backup server updated. The main server can SSH into the backup system. Any suggestion? Edit: Thanks for the suggestions so far but I think I didn't make myself clear enough. I'm only looking at synchronising normal users whose UID is on or above 500. System/service users (with UID below 500) may be different on both system. So you can't just sync the whole files I'm afraid.

• HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable Exchange 2003 OWA

  Receiving HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable when trying to access exchange web access. Server 2003 & Exchange 2003 Have tried: Deleting virtual directories and rebuilding them in IIS Restarting Dismounting & mounting the public folder store & mailbox store It's not AppPoolQueueLength Restarting all services (all proper ones are running) Making it use ssl or not (regular http) -- same thing for both Installing IIS & exchange 2003 on a new 2003 box as a new FE server, OWA on that gets same error. Not sure why it's getting a 503... was working without an issue and randomly is stuck at this no matter what; ll users can still successfully connect and use via outlook, only the web access is having issues. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  Hi, I'm trying to make an RPM with PHP 5.3.1 and PHP-FPM 0.6 for CentOS 5.4. So far it goes quite well, but when rpmbuild gets to the installation phase it fails with the following error: Executing(%install): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.63379 + umask 022 + cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD + cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/php-5.3.1/fpm-build/ + make install Installing PHP SAPI module: fpm Installing PHP CLI binary: /usr/bin/ cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/bin/#INST@12668#': Permission denied make: *** [install-cli] Error 1 error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.63379 (%install) RPM build errors: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.63379 (%install) I am running rpmbuild as a normal user, so it's understandable that it will fail to install anything into /usr/bin, but it shouldn't try to install anything outside the buildroot in the first place. I have however specified the BuildRoot in the header of the spec file and I can see it is passed correctly to the make install command. Does anyone have some idea of what is going wrong here?   (i'm just trying to find what am I missing...) Assuming John have a clear text message , he can create a regular hash ( like md5 , or sha256) and then encrypt the message. John can now send Paul the message + its (clear text)hash and Paul can know if the message was altered. ( decrypt and then compare hashes). Even if an attacker can change the encrpyted data ( without decrypt) - - when paul will open the message - and recalc the hash - it wont generate the same hash as the one john sent him. so why do we need hash by key ?

  For special testing purposes, we need a Windows server to allow the following: A team member can log in remotely to the server. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

I know ssh-keygen -l -f some_key works for "normal" ssh keys, but not for PEM files. If I try ssh-keygen on the .pem file, I get: $ ssh-keygen -l -f ./query.pem key_read: uudecode PRIVATE KEY----- failed key_read: uudecode PRIVATE KEY----- failed ./query.pem is not a public key file. This key starts with: -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- MIIEp.... etc. as opposed to a "regular" private key, which looks like: -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- Proc-Type: 4,ENCRYPTED DEK-Info: AES-128-CBC,E15F2.... etc.

• How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

  I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bind to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

I created a symlink using: ln -s /media/MYDISK /home/camilo/MYDISK chmod 777 /home/camilo/MYDISK I'm setting up smb.conf like this: [myshare1] comment = external disk browsable = yes path = /home/camilo/MYDISK guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0775 Also, in the [global] section I tried adding the following lines: follow symlinks = yes wide links = yes unix extensions = no The problem is that when browsing the shared folder in Windows 7, I get a "\\etc\myshare1 is not accessible" error. When pointing the path to a regular folder it works fine. Also, when I point it directly to /media/MYDISK, it shows the same error. EDIT: to make it more interesting, I have no graphical interface, so I need to touch the config files directly..

• Remote Desktop app can't connect through VPN or through RDP load balancer

  Using the regular Remote Desktop Client (in the desktop environment) I can connect just fine to remote servers when connected through Cisco VPN or when accessing a server behind a load balancer. When using the Remote Desktop app in the Modern UI, I can't do either of these things. Trying to connect to a remote server that's on a private network fails with: Can't find server, make sure the name and domain are correct and try again And connecting to a server that's behind an RDP load balancer fails with the following error, after accepting credentials: Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote PC again Is there some way to use the Remote Desktop app in these situations, or am I just out of luck?

The problem is that for some reason just initiating the extension in the php ini file slows down my entire network. Regular requests such as changing pages that should take less than 1 second take 5. • Vim-like keyboard input in all text fields in all programs.

  So, I'm addicted to vim and often add lots of garbage to regular text fields when I try to use vim commands and am not in vim. I thought to myself, why can't vim be EVERYWHERE?! Then it struck me. Why not? Has anyone written a program that could redirect input/current text fields into a vim buffer so that one could use vim-style editing in things other than terminals and gVim? • Can I use the voice & SMS features of my GSM SIM through my laptop?

  My laptop (a Lenovo T410s) has an internal GSM modem (device manager calls it a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9205) that I'm currently using a regular (voice, data, text, etc) 3G SIM in. The data functionality works great through the Lenovo software & Windows 7 but I was wondering if I can use the other features (specifically voice & SMS) through Windows. Is it posisble to use the non-data features of my 3G SIM through my Qualcomm GSM modem? If so, what software is available to this end? If not, where is the restriction? • Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit running Cobian Backup 11 (Gravity)

  I'm really enjoying Cobian 11, but am fairly new to it. My question is this. I back up a pretty large folder on a regular basis. I started off by doing a Full backup, and have followed that monthly using differential backups. I was told that, to restore my computer after a crash, I need to copy back the original full backup AND copy back the latest differential over the full. That's fine. However, over the months there are quite a few large differential backups dated between the original Full one and the latest differential one. To free space on my backup HD, can I every now and then delete the differential backups that lie between the original Full and the latest differential, and just leave the original Full and the latest differential backup on the HD?

• Cloning a USB flash drive to another larger one, is it safe to do so?

  I used Acronis True Image Home 2010 to clone a Dane-Elec zLight 8Gb pen drive/USB flash drive to a PNY Attaché 16Gb USB flash drive. Now WinXP shows the drive in device manager as USB DISK 2.0 USB DEVICE but doesn't have it in My Computer/doesn't assign it a drive letter. What is it that has messed up the PNY Attaché and is there some way to repair it so that it can be used as a regular USB flash drive again? Is there a safe way to clone a USB flash drive to another larger one? How safe is it to backup and restore a USB flash drive to/from a drive-image?

• Photoshop not loading fonts correctly

  I'm running Photoshop CS4 on WinXP and I have been sent a PSD as well as the needed fonts. I have installed all the fonts I got into the Windows fonts directory. When I open up the PSD in photoshop it tells me I am missing some fonts, then when I go to click on some text it tells me you are missing Roboto Bold or Roboto Regular. I check the font dropdown list in Photoshop and I see Roboto and that's it, not sure if that is correct or not? I then go to the windows fonts dir to confirm all the fonts are there and they are. See below.. Now I'm not sure if it makes any difference that the PSD I believe was made on a MAC & I'm on a PC?

• Does a Samsung G3 Station external hard drive stop working when power supply is too high?

  I have a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard drive (link to PDF specs here). It was working perfectly when I accidentally plugged it in my notebook's power source. The notebook's power source is 19V/3.42A. The hard drive's is 12V/2A and I know that, inside its case, there is regular 2TB SATA drive, along with some sort of adapter. Does this adapter has some kind of power protection? I opened the case and the hard drive board smells bad. Does my data is forever lost or can I replace its board?

• MySQL keeps crashing OS server.. Please help adjust my.ini!

  I have MySQL 5.0 installed on a Windows 2008 machine (3GB RAM). My server crashes on a regular basis (almost once a day) with this error: Changed limits: max_open_files: 2048 max_connections: 800 table_cache: 619 I did not use the heavy InnoDB .ini file, although I am rethinking that I should have? I am worried that big configuration changes will make my current sites stop working. What should I do? • Restricting SSRS subscriptions to shared schedules only

  Hi all I'm reasonably new to SQL Server Reporting Services and Report Manager, and completely new to SSRS's Subscriptions. We're running SSRS 2008. Out of the box it seems that a user with the Browser role can create a Subscription to a report and schedule it to run at any time they choose. As an admin I have setup a schedule called "Overnight reports" and have it run every night from 1am. I would like it so that when a regular user creates their Subscription they can only use one of my shared schedules so that their subscription will only run overnight. Is this possible? Thanks -Matt

• EEE PC 701/4G Surf Internal Drive: Is it really SSD?

  I have an old EEE PC with the 4 Gig internal drive. Everything I've read keeps saying it's an SSD drive; running lshw tells me that it's an ATA disk, Silicon Motion SM. The thing seems to be rather slow, though. I know it has a 900 Mhz Celeron processor and only 512 meg of RAM, but it seems like drive access is slow even for those specs. Does anyone know if it really has an SSD drive? I thought that compared to regular hard disks SSD's were blazing fast, and this feels like and acts like it's pulling from something more akin to an internal USB memory stick.

• MySQL on a laptop for remote workers - MyISAM keeps corrupting

  We have an application that is used by remote, mobile workers. It intalls WAMP (Server2Go) on a laptop and uses MySQL to store data locally. All tables are MyISAM. Once a day, the workers sync the database to our central server via HTTP scripts that query the data and post it to our site. The problem is that many of these laptop database tables are corrupting continually. It appears that MySQL acts like it saves the information (I don't get any query errors), but the table gets corrupt. I have to repair the table constantly (which removes several rows of data in the process). Does anyone have any ideas about how to work around this problem? Would it be wise to switch to InnoDB on the laptops? How about a different database system altogether. I have looked at MySQL Embedded, but it appears to be the same engine as the regular MySQL.
