• Is it any desktop wysiwyg editors for mediawiki / wiki available?

  Hello. Mediawiki is very good, but for programming tasks editing it via web is not very handy since wysiwyg is very limited, pressing 'edit' + 'publish' on any small change and waiting for page loading kins of annoying. I have seen alot of desktop wikis (personal wikis) that are free from such problems. The best example is a 'wikidpad' that has a usage patter of 'focus, edit wiki in-place, minimize'. This is very handy for programming work where you need to make small changes to wiki and documentation during development, and documentation is written much more often than readed :). But all such desktops wikies are personal - they don't have any wiki sharing (or marginally limited support for it). So, maybe it's a desktop application exists that can connect to mediawiki and allows to view and edit it via a rich wysiwyg editor? Any hints are welcomed.

• Developing for mobile devices and desktop

  Hi, I'm starting a new project. It will run on devices running Windows CE, Windows Mobile 6 and will also have a desktop version. The software will connect to some equipments through the serial port, using it's own protocol. Basically it will: connect to the equipment send and receive info read and write binary files These tasks will be shared between desktop and mobile devices. I've been searching the information I need, but I still have some doubts: If I target Windows CE devices it will work with Windows Mobile 6 too? Creating a class library targeting Windows CE will give me any trouble on using it in the desktop version? (when I add a reference to that class library, my VS says that I could experience some unexpected results) Is it possible to install .NET CF 3.5 on devices running Windows CE 4.2? Thanks!

• Windows Services in Win7?

  I am trying to make a service that spawns a desktop application, and then watches to make sure it restarts again if it is closed. . I would like it to basically spawn the process and then forget about it, allowing to act like a normal interactive application. (Apparently this is much easier to do in XP and before, but I need this for XP, Vista, and 7) My problem now is that either it shows up invisible if I use process.start() with desktop interactive checked, and if I directly spawn a form it asks "Do you REALLY want to do this?!" and then the whole screen goes blank EXCEPT for my program. I just want this to be an inoffensive background app. I have the app working well, I just need to figure out how to spawn it from a service without all the trouble. I am finding all of this stuff that says "Don't make services that have UI", but first off this was a requirement that was given to me. (Boss does not want it to be a scheduled task) Also, I noticed that the Task scheduler is itself a service, and it does not have any problem spawning user interactive applications. Why can't I do that too? What am I doing wrong?

  I'm one of those people who can't get anything done without a to-do list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't exist. Notepad Method: When I'm programming I've been keeping notepad open with a list of to-do's for my current project. I'll constantly re-arrange these based off priority and I cross them off and move them to the completed section when I'm finished with that particular task. • How to hide the console of batch scripts without losing std err/out streams

  My question is similar to Running a CMD or BAT in silent mode, but with one additional constraint. If you use WshScript.Run in vbscript, you lose access to the standard in/error/out streams of the process. WshScript.Exec gives you access to the standard streams, but you can't hide your windows. How can you have your cake (hide the windows) and eat it too (have direct access to the console streams)? I'm currently thinking about a C++ executable which creates a new Windows Station and Desktop, (see MSDN) and runs a specified script within that new Desktop (I'm not yet an expert on Window Stations and Desktops, so this idea may be retarded). This idea is based loosely on Condor's USE_VISIBLE_DESKTOP feature, which, if disabled, runs Condor jobs in a non-visible Desktop. I haven't quite figured out if this requires elevated priveledge. The tradeoff of this approach is that your script can disappear into limbo if it blocks on user input. Does anyone have any additional ideas? Or feedback on the approach outlined above? Edit: Also, the purpose of our script is to set up the user environment, so running as another user, or as a system scheduled task isn't really an option (unless there are clever tricks I don't know about).

• What would you use for deployment scripts in Java?

  Hi, I'm working on a Java web project that uses Maven to build its artifacts. At the end of the Maven build we have a few jar and war files that we need to deploy onto our development/testing environment. Right now we're using a pretty hefty Ant script that performs several tasks (on both Windows/Linux machines) Starts/Stops services Copies/deletes files Builds some stuff and then executes it Etc Ant does the job well - but the script is quickly getting very large, and to be honest, it feels inadequate for the task at hand. Are there other alternatives? I've heard of gant, but I'm not sure that's the right way to go. Thanks for helping!

• Data model for timesheet to task and/or timesheet to project?

  Let's say I want to make a simple project tracking system. A manager can create a project. Then he can create tasks for that project. Team members can record the hours they work for each task or for the project as a whole. Is the following design for the t_timesheet table a good idea? timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement project_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_project task_id - nullable, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal Or should I do something like this: timesheet_id - primary key, autoincrement task_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_task user_id - not null, foreign key constraint to t_user hours - decimal In the second option, I intend to always have a record in t_task labelled "miscellaneous items" with a foreign key to the relevant t_project record. Then I'll be able to track all hours for a project that aren't for any particular task. Are any of the ideas above good? What would be better?

  Hi guys, I want to check our google postions for several keywords every day and make a note in a spreadseet. At the moment, we have a student doing it but it's a rubbish job and it doesn't seem fair on them! Are there any tools available to automate this process? I have tried rankchecker by seobook.com, but although that should be exactly what im looking for when i set scheduled tasks in that, it doesnt work. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks! peter EDIT: Liam has suggested a Python script to do this, which unfortunately isnt something I'm very familiar with! If anyone knows of a good tutorial or something to help us with this, that would be brilliant. Update: Found a php script at seoscript.net which looks like a step in the right direction. Broadly, I can divide the tasks in following two categories: 1) Views from the website For this part, I just use the SQL query and execute it in my facebook App. 2) Create Cotent Initially, I tried this by taking the values in a form and then inserting those values into the drupal database myself. But the problem was that there are so many modules using that content. So, is there any other way to submit the contents from the facebook application to Drupal website? I tried using the Drupal for Facebook module, but didn't like its lack of flexibility and a lot of bugs.

  I have this in lib/tasks/foo.rake: Rake::Task["assets:precompile"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile" end Rake::Task["assets:precompile:nondigest"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile:nondigest" end When I run rake assets:precompile locally, both messages are printed. When I push to heroku, only the nondigest message is printed. However, according to the buildpack, the push is executing the exact same command as I am locally. Why does the enhancement to the base assets:precompile case not work on heroku but does work locally?

For example, after I detect that some resources might no longer be used in a cache, I might call: [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5]; However, there might be numerous places where I detect this, and I don't want to be calling cleanupCache continuously. I'd like to consolidate multiple calls to cleanupCache so that we only periodically get ONE call to cleanupCache. Here's what I've come up with do to this-- is this the best way? I'm wondering if is there a way to force MSSQL Management Studio to produce a script like this: ALTER TABLE Mytable ADD MyCol bit NOT NULL CONSTRAINT MyColDefault DEFAULT 0 WITH VALUES ALTER TABLE [dbo].Mytable ALTER COLUMN MyCol2 int NULL GO when I alter a very simple property of a column on a table. If I do this in the designer and ask for the produced script, the script doesn't do such simple tasks, but instead copies all the data in a tmp table, drops the original table, renames the tmp table with the original table name. And, of course, drops and recreates every constraint and relationships. Is there any option I can change to change this behaviour? Or, this may be possible, is there some danger I don't see in using the simple ALTER TABLE above? thanks.

After the table view has been displayed, you should flash the scroll view’s scroll indicators by sending a flashScrollIndicators message to the table view; you can do this in an override of the viewDidAppear: method of UIViewController. So lets say I do my custom stuff here and I do not flash the scroll indicator, and I do not reset the selection (which I think is wrong anyways, the user wants to know from where he came from). Will they reject it?

I want to make a page where a user, say administrator, could send some instructions to a server, for example using standard library and make task for a group of users forcing them to read files. After the reading users would press "already read it" and administrator would know who did it/who did not. I created simple workflow in office designer and choose assigne task to Group1, which is in the sharepoint server. After WF run everyone who is in Group1 get message about a task, that's great. However this task is general for group and if we go to the site section "current tasks", we can see it, while I want this task for every person in Group1. Futher question, is it possible to create form where administrator will choose users for this task, 'cause now I munualy set group in WF.

So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?

• Rails and jQuery - how do you get server-side validation errors to your view after an ajax request

  Ive searched this site but questions are usually regarding doing client-side validations or for different frameworks. I have a tasks list whose items can be edited inline. Upon submitting the inline edit form the item is updated all thanks to jQuery, ajax and rails. But I want to handle bad input from the user. HTML requests redisplay the view and errors are displayed thanks to rails helpers. But how do I insert that information after an ajax call? • Is it bad practice to have a long initialization method?

  many people have argued about function size. They say that functions in general should be pretty short. Opinions vary from something like 15 lines to "about one screen", which today is probably about 40-80 lines. Also, functions should always fulfill one task only. However, there is one kind of function that frequently fails in both criteria in my code: initialization functions. For example in an audio application, the audio hardware/API has to be set up, audio data has to be converted to a suitable format and the object state has to properly initialized. These are clearly three different tasks and depending on the API this can easily span more than 50 lines. The thing with init-functions is that they are generally only called once, so there is no need to re-use any of the components. Would you still break them up into several smaller functions would you consider big initialization functions to be ok?

  How could I implement a sub item where the item would have a parent to that of the same item. For example, I have a database that holds tasks/todos. Each todo has a title(TEXT), completed(INTEGER [1 if true, 0 if false]), and due date(TEXT) column. I would like to add functionality to have subtasks, where a task could possibly have a parent task. How would I implement this in SQLite for Android? NOT IN SQL! So no foreign keys (triggers are allow, though)! Could I just have a separate table (subtask) and have a foreign key trigger to link subtask(INTEGER parent) to task(INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT _id)? Or should I add a column to my original task table(INTEGER parent)? How could I implement this?

  Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a PHP based game where you have to do all sorts of simple but un-obvious tasks in order to progress to the next level (eg. refresh browser, press keyboard combination, ...) Kinda like the game "this is the only level" (if anyone has ever heard of it) Now I was thinking: Would it be possible to create a level where they'd have to sign up at a different page in order to progress to the next level? So say for example they need to sign up to goal.com and if they're signed up they proceed to the next level. The page would need to constantly check if the signup process on the other site is completed. Is this even possbible? And if so, any thoughts on how? Thanks!

• Multi-tab application (C#)

  Hi, I'm creating a multi-tabbed .NET application that allows the user to dynamically add and remove tabs at runtime. When a new tab is added, a control is added to it (as a child), in which the contents can be edited (eg. a text box). The user can perform tasks on the currently visible text box using a toolbar/menu bar. To better explain this, look at the picture below to see an example of what I want to accomplish. It's just a mock-up, so it doesn't actually work that way, but it shows what I want to get done. Essentially, like a multi-tabbed Notepad. • What about race condition in multithreaded reading?

  Hi, According to an article on IBM.com, "a race condition is a situation in which two or more threads or processes are reading or writing some shared data, and the final result depends on the timing of how the threads are scheduled. Race conditions can lead to unpredictable results and subtle program bugs." . Although the article concerns Java, I have in general been taught the same definition. As far as I know, simple operation of reading from RAM is composed of setting the states of specific input lines (address, read etc.) and reading the states of output lines. This is an operation that obviously cannot be executed simultaneously by two devices and has to be serialized. Now let's suppose we have a situation when a couple of threads access an object in memory. In theory, this access should be serialized in order to prevent race conditions. But e.g. the readers/writers algorithm assumes that an arbitrary number of readers can use the shared memory at the same time. So, the question is: does one have to implement an exclusive lock for read when using multithreading (in WinAPI e.g.)? If not, why? Where is this control implemented - OS, hardware?
