• Why are the prices for broadband bandwidth at data centers much higher than consumer/small business offerings?

  The prices for broadband bandwidth at data centers are sometimes as much as 10x higher than for a typical small business/consumer connection, at least where I live. Now, I understand those are two differend kind of products, but what exactly are the differences? Is it mainly because the bandwidth you get at a data center is guaranteed (CIR), while a consumer offer lists maximal bandwidth (EIR/MIR)? Or are there other factors as well? (Note: my previous, much more specific question on the same general topic was closed as not constructive. I tried to extract the core issue and present it in a way that can be answered objectively. If you feel that this question is still bad and should be closed, please care to comment and explain why.)

  I have some problems with my Dell Vostro 3350. I have to graphic card - Intel and ATI radeon 6470M. I have installed this driver. It's fresh installation of Windows 7. And my problem is that in device menager I can see in section graphic cards AMD Radeon HD 6490M and Intel(R) Graphics Family. Another thing is that I'm using two screens. And I want to use ATI readeon as default. At this moment I'm event not sure if ATI is working. Another strange thing is that when I run Catalyst Control Center in section Destkop Menagement i don't see nothing.

• What is the cause of a vertical white line on an LCD monitor?

  This just happened yesterday when I was browsing the internet. My AOC N941Sw monitor is suddenly showing a thin horizontal white line near the center of the screen. The white line distorts the images. I tried checking the cables for loose connection and dust particles but the white line is still here. There are times the entire image below the horizontal white line flickers and move up and down. When this happens, I just turn off the monitor then the flicker goes away but the white horizontal line is still there. After a few minutes, the same thing happen all over again. Is there a way to fix this?

• Windows 7 ISO not booting from DVD drive?

  I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo). My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

• Windows xp keeps rebooting itself every morning at 8am?

  Hi, I've got windows xp sp3. It seems to restart itself every morning at 8am (judging by the windows logs, I can see all apps log a startup at 8am every day). Whenever I get to the machine in the morning (around 9 am) I see it's rebooted. I've checked that automatic updates are off, and that the power management settings are set to "always on". I'm not sure what else could be causing the machine to reboot, not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? • Mount a remote Linux hard drive as another Windows 7 partition during boot?

  I would like to mount a hard drive on a remote computer (running on CentOS 6) as a Windows drive so that I can install programs to that drive. The primary hard drive for my Windows machine (which is at home) is pretty small, I have a Linux server sitting in a remote data center with a much larger hard drive and allow me to install more stuff. I know most of you are going to say Samba, unfortunately the biggest problem for me in this case is that I can not mount Samba as a network share unless I start OpenVPN or SSH tunneling first, which is not good for my case because I will install some startup programs to the remote drive as well. Therefore, the remote drive has to be ready and work just like another drive BEFORE any of the startup programs start to load. Is that possible? My home PC has Windows 7 Professional 32 bit installed and the remote server is a Xen virtual server running on CentOS 6. I have admin/root permissions for both. Thanks a lot!

• Domain in a hosted environment

  We have an application we host in a third party data center for our clients. We have multiple clients running the same application on several racks of servers. Most of our clients require that our servers be SAS70 compliant. Currently each server has it's own set of users and security settings that need to be configured. We are creating scripts to do this, but what would be the risks/advantages of joining all the servers to the domain for User Management and Group policy for enforcing security settings? The rational of some is that if the DC is hacked the whole network would be compromised where as if one stand alone hosted server is hacked everything else should be safe.

  A building with 4 floors, each floor is divided as follows; 15 users for accounting, 15 users for finance and 15 users for marketing (i.e 45 user in each floor). Data center is located on the ground floor, with 45 servers to be divided into 15 for all the accounting users in the four floors, another 15 for the finance and the last 15 for the marketing. (i.e each 15 server for each one of the above categories are separated from the other 15 and so on) What is the proper subnetting design for such scenario? Knowing that we are allowed to use anything we want!

• 1024x768 gone (1024x600 availble) on HDMI, yesterday it worked?

  When I try to play a game called F-22 Total Air War 2.0 I get an error which says that the resolution 1024.768 is unsupported by the harware.. so I look into my desktop options and it looks like there is an option for 800x600, 1024x600, 1152x648 and higher wide screen resolutions but the 1024x768 is gone? I did play the game yezterday, I disconnected the HDMI, got upstairs, played a few more games, came back downstairs, plugged in the HDMI, launched the game and bam I got the error! I have a ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 and the newest ATI Catalyst Center downloaded 3 days ago. How can I 'enable' the 1024x768 resolution again? Without it I can't play the game on my Big TV and I will be stuck with my little laptop screen.

• Move 2TB Win7x64 to 640GB HDD

  Basically I just got a new (refurbished) HP H8-1260t to use for Windows Media Center. The shipping drive is a 2TB Hitachi drive, but I have an older and barely used 640GB WD Caviar Blue 7200RPM drive I would like to move my Windows install to. I have about 750GB of data with over 1TB free left on the drive. Having googled my heart and fingers out, I would think that I can shrink my partition down to the size it is full at now with over 1TB free for a second partition where I can move my media files to further shrink my boot partition so that I can fit a system image smaller than 640GB on that WD drive. I want to have a separate drive for Media and TV Recordings from my boot disk. Does this sound like the easiest method for me? Or am I doing this all wrong. Help appreciated.

  Hey all - I'm in the market for a new laptop and wanted to get some recommendations. I'm a Linux sysadmin and this laptop is primarily for work related use, working from home, after hours, occasional trips to the data center, etc. We all know the drill. My typical setup includes various utilities and tools plus multiple partitions for booting different OS's including VMware. Need serial port of course, DVD-RW, and all the usual stuff we use in our daily routine. I'm kinda thinking a Thinkpad T510 but open to other suggestions! Brief explanation of why you suggest some particular brand and configuration is appreciated.

  I need a keyboard shortcut for Merge & Center. I'd like it to be Ctrl+Shift+M. I am unfamiliar with Macros as was suggested in another answer and when I go to Options, I can't find shortcuts...I tried to follow the Help info, but as was already answered the Excel Customize Ribbon doesn't have the same options that Word 2010 does. So, how do I go about it step by step? I know this is for superuser...and I'm not one...but I hope to be one some day. Please help me on the way. Thanks.

  We're in the process of installing a brand new Windows Server 2008 Web cluster and we would like to synchronize some files between the servers. The problem is that the DC in the domain is an old Windows Server 2003 Standard (NOT R2) which apparently doesn't contain some extension to the AD schema. Is it possible to upgrade the schema without upgrading the DC servers to R2? When I try to create a Replication Group on the 2008 Server I get the following message: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- srv.XXXXXX.XX: The Active Directory Domain Services schema on domain controller activedc07.srv.XXXXXX.XX cannot be read. This error might be caused by a schema that has not been extended, or was extended improperly. See Help and Support Center for information about extending the Active Directory Domain Services schema. • How would I Enable FTP on Home PC (Win7)?

  In my home, all PCs connect through a small router. Some wired and some wireless. Our Media PC (HTPC) is controlled via a Media Center TV style remote, so managing files on it is tedious. I can access all of the files on the HTPC from my desktop PC, but moving a 6 GB file from \\HTPC\Folder1 to \\HTPC\Folder2 involves copying the data to the desktop and then transferring it back. If I were on the HTPC, this would likely be handled by a simple address change for the file (i.e. it would be done almost instantly). I'm thinking if I could get an FTP program to connect to the HTPC, I could simplify things ...but how do I enable that ability on the HPTC? Then, how would I go about connecting to the HTPC? Would I simply enter \\HTPC as the FTP address?

• Google document does not print correctly on Mac 10.7.5 using Chrome

  When attempting to print a Google document, the header does not get printed at all and the text starts almost in the center of the page - cutting off almost half of the text in the printable area horizontally. The vertical alignment appears fine, with the exception of hte missing header. I have searched the product forums at Google, but they are virtually unusable. Endless threads without a solution! For reference, the document prints fine from Windows XP using Chrome. I can also print from other applications on the Mac without issue - so I am thinking it's a Google doc issue at this point.

• How can I install a scanner by IP?

  I'm trying to install a scanner by IP the same way you would install a printer by IP. I don't want to install the horrible HP Solution Center software but I don't know how to install a network scanner without the software. I'm having a hard time googling this because when I search for things like "install network scanner" or "install scanner by IP" all the results are for things like Angry IP Scanner which is clearly different than what I'm trying to get. Thanks in advance. This is for Windows Vista, but Windows 7 instructions will do.

• LVM incorrectly reported missing after power failure

  We have had a major power failure in the data-center. We are using a set of servers for our storage needs. The main server has several pairs of disks mirrored with mdadm. The resulting /dev/mdX are LVM physical volumes and belong to a big volume-group with all our data. After the powerloss, we had the problem that one of the mdadm devices was not auto-detected due to a missing entry in mdadm.conf. As a consequence, the volumegroup had inactive logical volumes due to the missing PV. We were able to fix the mdadm config and reboot. pvscan shows all expected PVs but one LV still does not come up. vgdisplay shows: [...] Cur PV: 3 Act PV: 2 [...] Neither vgscan nor pvscan show any missing devices. What went wrong? How can we force LVM to activate all PVs?

• Access to certain files but not others

  Hoping someone can help me as I have, thus far, been unable to solve the issue. I am running a media center utilizing Ubuntu 12.04. I was initially successful accessing media files from the desktop running Ubuntu via my Windows 7 laptop and Roku device. I started backing up a new batch of DVD's I had (into MKV files, like everything else in my media folders) and noticed I cannot access the new files from either the Roku or the laptop. I have not changed any settings in the media folder and verified the shared permissions. The parent folder (Media) is shared (with permission flow-down) while the subfolders (Movies, TV Shows, Music) are not. I have changed the permissions on this to include shared when the access problem arose but with no success. I can only access the original files uploaded an not new files added. Any suggestions???   Possible Duplicate: Laptop power supplies, does current matter? I'm in Colombia, South America and the power adapter on my HP Pavilion DV4-1125nr laptop died. The adapter is rated at 65W input 1.6A & output 18.5V 3.5A. A friend found me a Dell adapter rated at 65W input 1.5A & output 19.5V 3.34A. Both have center + polarities. Seems very stable and not having unusual heat problems. Do you think it is safe to use this adapter without harming my laptop?

• XNA: Camera's Rotation and Translation matrices seem to interfere with each other

  I've been following the guide here for how to create a custom 2D camera in XNA. It works great, I've implemented it before, but for some reason, the matrix math is throwing me off. public sealed class Camera2D { public Vector2 Origin { get; set; } public Vector2 Position { get; set; } public float Scale { get; set; } public float Rotation { get; set; } } It might be easier to just show you a picture of my problem: http://i.imgur.com/H1l6LEx.png What I want to do is allow the camera to pivot around any given point. Right now, I have the rotations mapped to my shoulder buttons on a gamepad, and if I press them, it should rotate around the point the camera is currently looking at. Then, I use the left stick to move the camera around. The problem is that after it's been rotated, pressing "up" results in it being used relative to the rotation, creating the image above. Most new netbooks today ship with Windows 7 Starter, which is the cheapest edition of Windows 7.  It is fine for many computing tasks, and will run all your favorite programs great, but it lacks many customization, multimedia, and business features found in higher editions.  Here we’ll show you how you can quickly upgrade your netbook to more full-featured edition of Windows 7 using Windows Anytime Upgrade.  Also, if you want to upgrade your laptop or desktop to another edition of Windows 7, say Professional, you can follow these same steps to upgrade it, too. Please note: This is only for computers already running Windows 7.  If your netbook is running XP or Vista, you will have to run a traditional upgrade to install Windows 7. Upgrade Advisor First, let’s make sure your netbook can support the extra features, such as Aero Glass, in Windows 7 Home Premium.  Most modern netbooks that ship with Windows 7 Starter can run the advanced features in Windows 7 Home Premium, but let’s check just in case.  Download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (link below), and install as normal. Once it’s installed, run it and click Start Check.   Make sure you’re connected to the internet before you run the check, or otherwise you may see this error message.  If you see it, click Ok and then connect to the internet and start the check again. It will now scan all of your programs and hardware to make sure they’re compatible with Windows 7.  Since you’re already running Windows 7 Starter, it will also tell you if your computer will support the features in other editions of Windows 7. After a few moments, the Upgrade Advisor will show you want it found.  Here we see that our netbook, a Samsung N150, can be upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. We also see that we had one issue, but this was because a driver we had installed was not recognized.  Click “See all system requirements” to see what your netbook can do with the new edition. This shows you which of the requirements, including support for Windows Aero, your netbook meets.  Here our netbook supports Aero, so we’re ready to go upgrade. For more, check out our article on how to make sure your computer can run Windows 7 with Upgrade Advisor. Upgrade with Anytime Upgrade Now, we’re ready to upgrade our netbook to Windows 7 Home Premium.  Enter “Anytime Upgrade” in the Start menu search,and select Windows Anytime Upgrade. Windows Anytime Upgrade lets you upgrade using product key you already have or one you purchase during the upgrade process.  And, it installs without any downloads or Windows disks, so it works great even for netbooks without DVD drives. Anytime Upgrades are cheaper than a standard upgrade, and for a limited time, select retailers in the US are offering Anytime Upgrades to Windows 7 Home Premium for only $49.99 if purchased with a new netbook.  If you already have a netbook running Windows 7 Starter, you can either purchase an Anytime Upgrade package at a retail store or purchase a key online during the upgrade process for $79.95.  Or, if you have a standard Windows 7 product key (full or upgrade), you can use it in Anytime upgrade.  This is especially nice if you can purchase Windows 7 cheaper through your school, university, or office. Purchase an upgrade online To purchase an upgrade online, click “Go online to choose the edition of Windows 7 that’s best for you”.   Here you can see a comparison of the features of each edition of Windows 7.  Note that you can upgrade to either Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.  We chose home Premium because it has most of the features that home users want, including Media Center and Aero Glass effects.  Also note that the price of each upgrade is cheaper than the respective upgrade from Windows XP or Vista.  Click buy under the edition you want.   Enter your billing information, then your payment information.  Once you confirm your purchase, you will directly be taken to the Upgrade screen.  Make sure to save your receipt, as you will need the product key if you ever need to reinstall Windows on your computer. Upgrade with an existing product key If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit from a retailer, or already have a Full or Upgrade key for another edition of Windows 7, choose “Enter an upgrade key”. Enter your product key, and click Next.  If you purchased an Anytime Upgrade kit, the product key will be located on the inside of the case on a yellow sticker. The key will be verified as a valid key, and Anytime Upgrade will automatically choose the correct edition of Windows 7 based on your product key.  Click Next when this is finished. Continuing the Upgrade process Whether you entered a key or purchased a key online, the process is the same from here on.  Click “I accept” to accept the license agreement. Now, you’re ready to install your upgrade.  Make sure to save all open files and close any programs, and then click Upgrade. Here’s a before and after shot of our desktop.  When you do an Anytime Upgrade, all of your programs, files, and settings will be just as they were before you upgraded.  The only change we noticed was that our pinned taskbar icons were slightly rearranged to the default order of Internet Explorer, Explorer, and Media Player.  Here’s a shot of our desktop before the upgrade.  Notice that all of our pinned programs and desktop icons are still there, as well as our taskbar customization (we are using small icons on the taskbar instead of the default large icons). You can also now use Windows Media Center, and can play-back DVD movies using an external drive. One of our favorite tools, the Snipping Tool, is also now available for easy screenshots and clips. Activating you new edition of Windows 7 You will still need to activate your new edition of Windows 7.  To do this right away, open the start menu, right-click on Computer, and select Properties.   Scroll to the bottom, and click “Activate Windows Now”. Make sure you’re connected to the internet, and then select “Activate Windows online now”. Activation may take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection speed. When it is done, the Activation wizard will let you know that Windows is activated and genuine.  Your upgrade is all finished!   I need a solution to store images (1 billion) which users will upload to a website via PHP or Javascript upload (website will have 1 billion page views a month using Linux Debian distros) assuming 20 photos per user maximum (10 thumbnails of size 90px by 90px and 10 large, script resized images of having maximum width 500px or maximum height 500px depending on shape of image, meaning square, rectangle, horizontal, vertical etc). Assume this to be a LEMP-stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP) social-media or social-matchmaking type application whose content will be text and images. Since everyone knows storing tons of images (website users uploaded images in this case) are bad inside a single directory or NFS etc, please explain all the details about the architecture and configuration of the entire setup of storage solution, to store 1 billion images on any method you recommend (no third-party cloud storage like S3 etc. It has to be within the private data center using our own hardware and resources.). The solution has to include both the storage solution and organizing the images uploaded by users. How will we organize the users images if a single user will not have more than 20 images (10 thumbs and 10 large of having either width or height 500px)? Please consider that this has to be organized in a structural way so we can fetch a single user's images via PHP/Javascript or API programmatically through some type of user's unique identifier(s).
