• How do you make slides for programming talks?

  I've given a few talks recently and I have not found a good way to make slides. Here are a few desirable characteristics for programming slides: They're slides. A standard emacs buffer won't do it. They have syntax highlighting for code. They support basic formatting, like font size and color and bullets. No fancy animations needed. The only animation I desire is one-by-one appearance of bullets. So far I have considered: Microsoft Office - out of the question for Linux users. OpenOffice.org - too much for my needs, code formatting/highlighting needs to be done externally and pasted in. On the plus side supports bullets, bullet-by-bullet animation, and font formatting. Emacs - Supports all the code formatting but I haven't found a slides mode that lets me transition from one chunk to another. HTML5 - I once made slides using html5rocks as a template. It supports everything, but is too hard and time-consuming the "throw together" a few slides before a minor talk. Also the html5-only features may not work on the podium computer's installed browser. Any suggestions for programs/techniques for making code-centric presentations?

• Games without a(n explicit) game loop

  Most game development happens with a main game loop. Are there any good articles/blog posts/discussions about games without a game loop? I imagine they'd mostly be web games, but I'd be interested in hearing otherwise. (As a side note, I think it's really interesting that the concept is almost exclusively used in gaming as far as I'm aware, perhaps that may be another question.) Edit: I realize there's probably a redraw loop somewhere. I guess what I really mean is a loop that is hidden to you. Frames are something you as the developer are not concerned with as you're working on a higher level of abstraction. E.g. someLootItem.moveTo(inventory, someAnimatationType) and that will move from the loot box to your inventory using the specified animation type without the game developer having to worry about the implementation details of that animation. Maybe that's how "real" games end up working, but from reading most tutorials they seem to imply a much more granular level of control is used, but that might just be an artifact of being a tutorial.

• Rendering a DOM across multiple displays

  I'm building a data-driven animation with HTML and javascript to run in a web browser. I would like to display it tiled across three 1080p monitors. This essentially yields a viewport that's 5760px wide and 1080px tall. Pretty large. Does anyone have experience setting up something like this? I have many questions below, but any tip would be appreciated: Is it reasonable to expect a DOM to render into such a large viewport size at close to 60fps? I might choose to use canvas, instead of SVG or HTML, but that would yield a giant canvas. Can a canvas with such high resolution be performant? Of course everything depends on the complexity of the graphics I want to render, but I'm looking to remove that factor from this question, so assume I'm asking about a canvas animation that can run at 60fps at 1920x1080 resolution. Would it run roughly as fast at 3 times the width? Would three.js and WebGL be a more proper approach at that resolution? How do you actually cause Chrome or FF to span 3 monitors at full screen? Do I need a 3rd party solution of any kind? Thanks!

• Google Chrome with strange behavior

  I'm former Chromium-browser user, but after not upgrading the PPA for 2 months, I switched to Google Chrome browser yesterday. Everything is okay, except some strange behavior on some pages and crashing after loading "chrome://" configuration pages. The best known website with strange behavior is youtube, there is a picture what I see: When I open user menu in top right corner, it crashes that way and even after closing the menu, some parts of menu stay display. You may say it's Youtube problem, no, I have this problem at least on three other websites, here it is on Imgur: The problem isn't for the whole side, sometimes it happens from the middle of the screen. The interesting part is that it happens everytime in the same distance from the right border. When I check the DOM elements with the Developer tool, the overlay which shows element's position is rendered how it should be. What is more, if there is anchor after the crashed area, it works after clicking on it. Selecting text in crashed page is impossible. I hope there is enough information to give me an advice, thanks in advance. :) EDIT: Here is what the browser posted in "chrome://gpu-internals/": Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable Compositing: Hardware accelerated 3D CSS: Hardware accelerated CSS Animation: Software animated. • Reversing animated sprites

  I have created a sprite sheet of which consists of 6 frames with a character moving legs each frame, now I have coded it so that the animation is running successfully from frame 1 to 6, however I am trying to reverse this so then when it goes from 1 to 6 instead of restarting it go's 6 to 1 in a continuous loop.   Hello, I've setup the Django with mod_wsgi and run into this error. I thought maybe the sys.path was not setup correctly but I tried everything I could think of with no luck. Any suggestions? • FSharp.Compiler.CodeDom for VS2008 and VS2010 side-by-side

  I'm using FSharp.Compiler.CodeDom to dynamically create F# classes. The problem is, that I have both VS2008 and VS2010 on my computer side-by-side (they works fine), and using F# in this configuration is buggy at best: If I don't install InstallFSharp.msi, then under VS2008 the built classes complain about not finding FSharp.Core (even if they're referenced) If I install InstallFSharp.msi, then under VS2008 the built classes will use the F# built for VS2010, and will throw a binary-incompatibility exception, because it will load the .net4 variant: FSC: error FS0219: The referenced or default base CLI library 'mscorlib' is binary- incompatible with the referenced F# core library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft F#\v4.0\FSharp.Core.dll'. Consider recompiling the library or making an explicit reference to a version of this library that matches the CLI version you are using. If I replace the F# found at the previous location to the separately installed dll-s, then of course VS2010 will complain about binary-incompatibility Am I overlooking something, or they won't simply work for a shared environment like this?   When calling external processes like MSBuild cruise control sets environment variables. One of values is CCNetLabel. it holds the value of the current projects label. I want to use the same values in ccnet config itself but when I try ccnet config has a problem.   Hey everybody, I developed an Eclipse plugin (a view) using the plugin development version of Eclipse. I exported the plugin as a jar archive and now I would like import it in another version of Eclipse, but it doesn't recognize the plugin. This is my first plugin so I might have forgotten something obvious. I searched the internet for hours but didn't find anything. Does anybody know what else I have to do? Btw, the dependencies of my plugin are: org.eclipse.ui, org.eclipse.core.runtime, org.eclipse.core.filesystem, edu.tum.cs.eclipse.commons, org.eclipse.ui.ide, org.eclipse.core.resources The version I'd like to import it in is the default Eclipse for PHP Developers from eclipse.org. • Installing flex on Mac Parallels

  Hello folks, I am trying to install Flex 3 on my Windows 7 Virtual machine (parallels desktop) on my Mac Pro. The problem seems to be some sort of conflict between the copy of Flex 3 Builder installed on Mac OS X. The installer tries to install Flex in x:/Program Files/Adobe/Flex Builder 3/ but since Parallels Desktop connects all directories, there resides the Flex Builder 3 installation of MAC. • Unable to set cookie in response header (newcookie doesn't show in external browser) : Jersey jax-rs

But the browser is not storing the cookie. in external browser: the header doesn't have any set-cookie field. Should I use HTTPServletResponse? But shouldn't the javax.ws.rs.core.Response work as well?

• Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

  I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! • Setup Padrino with DataMapper and MySQL database

  Hello I am trying to setup a Padrino project using DataMapper and MySQL on my Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I have the necessary gems: dm-core data_objects do_mysql mysql (linked to my original Mac OSX installation) But when I try to start the padrino with PADRINO START from the console, I get the following error: /Users/ivolution/.bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems/dm-core-0.10.2/lib/dm-core/adapters/mysql_adapter.rb:3:in `require': no such file to load -- do_mysql (LoadError) But as I said I do have do_mysql gem installed so there shouldn't be such error, I did bundle install in my project folder before trying to start Padrino. Any ideas?

What am I doing wrong? I have tried HTTP instead of HTTPS but the result is the same error.

• Configure JBOss cache to run on JBoss server 4.2.3.GA

  Our commercial application used to run on different application server and letely we started adjust it to run on JBoss server. The problem is that that application runs JBoss cache and as part of the integration with this framework, the web-inf\lib contains the follwing jars: jboss-aop.jar, jbosscache-core.jar, jboss-common.jar, jboss-common-core.jar, jboss-j2ee.jar, jboss-jmx.jar, jboss-logging-spi.jar This causes a problem to use JNDI through the application because the jboss-common-core.jar contain naming package that cause JBoss JNDI to work incorrect. So I need to find a way to organise my jars that on one hand jboss cache will keep working and on the other hand not to interfere to the work of JNDI Perhaps it include moving the some or all those jars from the web-inf\lib to the /server/default/lib Looking for someone who is familiar in this subject (continue of this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2847375/problem-configure-jboss-to-work-with-jndi3 )

• Weird Mono compilation error

  Hi, I am using IKVM to get SVNKit on a Mono project I'm working with, I have a class that implements an interface from SVNKit, and I can't compile: On windows and on .NET, everything compiles fine, just getting this on Mono. /home/nubela/Workspace/subsync/subsync/Core/Subversion/PropGetHandler.cs(22,22): Error CS0535: Subsync.Core.Subversion.PropGetHandler' does not implement interface member org.tmatesoft.svn.core.wc.ISVNPropertyHandler.__()' (CS0535) (subsync) I googled _() method, and it seems to be the initializer method for the base class in the Java library compiled from IKVM. I have no clue how to proceed now, any idea guys? :)

• WCSF vs MEF, What's Best For Me?

  Hey fellows, I'm working on a large web application that includes many modules (CRM, Inventory, Administration, etc.) What I want to accomplish is to be able develop each of these modules independently (the UI, Core Logic, DataAccess Logic, and all) and then integrate them all together into a core module (this integration should only be a change in the configuration file). For example, if I have a core module named Host, I should be able to add the CRM module to the host module by simply adding this line to the host's configuration file: <module name="CRM" /> I did some reading on the WCSF, and found that it can help integrate some modules together, but it really doesn't offer so much help in terms of integrating those UI elements. Some friends suggested MEF for the job, but I haven't looked at that yet. What do you guys think? Is it possible to achieve this level of modularity, and how much work do I have to put into it to get it working?

  I have two maven projects Project AAA * AAA-Core * AAA-Other Project BBB * BBB-Core * BBB-AAA-specific I want to create a build plan in Bamboo to build the BBB-AAA-specific project. The plan configuration is such that this project depends on the AAA-Other projec build. Thus everything should work ok. But when I try to run the BBB-AAA-specific Bamboo plan I get an error that states: "Unable to find resource 'foo.bar.AAA:AAA:pom:0.0.1-SNAPSHOT' in repository snapshots (http://foo.bar.com)" What is going on? The bamboo builds for "AAA-Core" and "AAA-Other" work as expected.

On the other hand, it keeps on writing log messages like this: Jun 8, 2010 9:53:30 PM org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext log SEVERE: Error writing messages ClientAbortException: java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe I actually wanted to suppress all log messages from this class, as they flood my logfile, and the error is irrelevant for me. So why is the following line ignored? org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext.level = OFF Is there any other way to suppress the log output of this class?

• classes and static variables in shared libraries

  I am trying to write something in c++ with an architecture like: App -- Core (.so) <-- Plugins (.so's) for linux, mac and windows. The Core is implicitly linked to App and Plugins are explicitly linked with dlopen/LoadLibrary to App. The problem I have: static variables in Core are duplicated at run-time -- Plugins and App have different copys of them. at least on mac, when a Plugin returns a pointer to App, dynamic casting that pointer in App always result in NULL. Can anyone give me some explanations and instructions for different platforms please? I know this may seem lazy to ask them all here but I really cannot find a systematic answer to this question.

  Yesterday I created a simple image servlet and attempted to deploy it. I am getting an error on JBoss startup, and then further errors on trying to invoke the servlet. I spent about 8 hours yesterday searching the web for answers and trying different scenarios. I ended up making my JBoss problems worse and then fixing them, but I never did get the servlet to work. As a matter of fact, I even added some code to one of my JSPs to attempt to instantiate the Servlet and call the doGet method. This actually works and outputs the correct debug sequences to the log indicating that the Servlet constructor and doGet methods were called. I also tried following some instructions for creating/deploying a very simple HelloWorld servlet, and that has exactly the same problem. Note that web.xml already contained a servlet put there by JBoss: org.jboss.web.tomcat.service.StatusServlet -- that Servlet does not give any errors in the log. As an experiment, I removed ".web" from that path and ended up getting exactly the same error as I'm getting on my Servlet. So it would appear that JBoss is not able to locate my Servlet given the specified path. Just for kicks, I've tried all sorts of other paths, like just plain MyImageServlet, controller.MyImageServlet, and more. Also, the servlet was originally named ImageServlet, but I attempted the name change thinking maybe there was some conflict with an existing ImageServlet. In all cases, the behavior is the same. After all of my research yesterday, I would say that this appears to be a problem with the JBoss servlet container, and I also learned that JBoss 5.1.0.GA should come bundled with a tomcat servlet container. I installed JBoss on my PC (Windows XP) myself less than 2 months ago (from jboss.org) and used it pretty much as is. Note that I am running on JDK 1.6, so I did use the jboss-jdk6 installation version. I am running on Windows, but I also deploy to a Linux virtual dedicated server. I deployed the current version of my program, including the servlet to the Linux box, but I get the exact same errors. I'm reluctant to just try reinstalling JBoss, since it's hard to place the blame on the JBoss installation when I get the same errors on two completely different installations. I am a bit suspicious of the bundled tomcat servlet container, because using eclipse, I haven't been able to locate any indication that there is a tomcat bundled into JBoss. I did locate servlet-api.jar in the JBoss common/lib directory. This is on the eclipse build path. One possibly useful note: I had previously used a standalone tomcat server for other projects using the same eclipse, so maybe it's some sort of eclipse issue? But, as I said, I do get the same errors when I deploy to the Linux server, and that deployment process just involves ftping files to the server and then putting them into the deployed war package and restarting JBoss.
