• Can't connect to Wired Network after installing 12.04

  I have installed 12.04 into a used HP Compaq DC 7100 CMT. Plugged in LAN cable into the computer and it says network disconnected. from what I understand on the things I've read, it's not getting the address right, maybe it's just a guess (hardware address 00:16:35:78:47:bb). I know the LAN cable is working I can get on the net with the old computer. (Old computer is using device MAC address; Auto eth0 00:11:11:E6:4F:FE). I have put this address into the newer HP and it shows last used (minutes ago) but no Internet sever not found. I tried the hardware address it says never. I feel and think this should be easy to fix. But I just don't know. • Bastion unexpectedly exits when I move my cursor

  I downloaded the Humble Indie Bundle V, mostly because my friend told me about how great Bastion was. When I first installed it, I was getting the seemingly common "black screen" error that most people got (fixed that half with this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11992661). But I also have an error where every time I move my cursor, in any direction, any amount, the game closes instantly. I can use the keyboard no problem, but without fail, every time I move my mouse, it crashes. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I am worried it may be a hardware issue, but hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558. Graphics card is the stock Intel graphics card, running on 4 GB of RAM.

• About Me

  I’m new to blogging.  This is the second blog post that I have written, and before I go too much further I wanted the readers of my blog to know a bit more about me… Kid’s Stuff By trade, I am a programmer (or coder, developer, engineer, architect, etc).  I started programming when I was 12 years old.  When I was 7, we got our first ‘family’ computer – an Apple IIc.  It was great to play games on, and of course what else was a 7-year-old going to do with it.  I did have one problem with it, though.  When I put in my 5.25” floppy to play a game, sometimes, instead loading my game I would get a mysterious ‘]’ on the screen with a flashing cursor.  This, of course, was not my game.  Much like the standard ‘Microsoft fix’ is to reboot, back then you would take the floppy out, shake it, and restart the computer and pray for a different result. One day, I learned at school that I could topple my nemesis – the ‘]’ and flashing cursor – by typing ‘load’ and pressing enter.  Most of the time, this would load my game and then I would get to play.  Problem solved.  However, I began to wonder – what else can I make it do? When I was in 5th grade my dad got a bright idea to buy me a Tandy 1000HX.  He didn’t know what I was going to do with it, and neither did I.  Least of all, my mom wasn’t happy about buying a 5th grader a $1,000 computer.  Nonetheless, Over time, I learned how to write simple basic programs out of the back of my Math book: 10 x=5 20 y=6 30 PRINT x+y That was fun for all of about 5 minutes.  I needed more – more challenges, more things that I could make the computer do.  In order to quench this thirst my parents sent me to National Computer Camps in Connecticut.  It was one of the best experiences of my childhood, and I spent 3 weeks each summer after that learning BASIC, Pascal, Turbo C and some C++.  There weren’t many kids at the time who knew anything about computers, and lets just say my knowledge of and interest in computers didn’t score me many ‘cool’ points.  My experiences at NCC set me on the path that I find myself on now, and I am very thankful for the experience.  Real Life I have held various positions in the past at different levels within the IT layer cake.  I started out as a Software Developer for a startup in the Dallas, TX area building software for semiconductor testing statistical process control and sampling.  I was the second Java developer that was hired, and the ninth employee overall, so I got a great deal of experience developing software.  Since there weren’t that many people in the organization, I also got a lot of field experience which meant that if I screwed up the code, I got yelled at (figuratively) by both my boss AND the customer.  Fun Times!  What made it better was that I got to help run pilot programs in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Malta.  Getting yelled at in Taiwan is slightly less annoying that getting yelled at in Dallas… I spent the next 5 years at Accenture doing systems integration in the ‘SOA’ group.  I joined as a Consultant and left as a Senior Manager.  I started out writing code in WebLogic Integration and left after I wrapped up project where I led a team of 25 to develop the next generation of a digital media platform to deliver HD content in a digital format.  At Accenture, I had the pleasure of working with some truly amazing people – mentoring some and learning from many others – and on some incredible real-world IT projects.  Given my background with the BEA stack of products I was often called in to troubleshoot and tune WebLogic, ALBPM and ALSB installations and have logged many hours digging through thread dumps, running performance tests with SoapUI and decompiling Java classes we didn’t have the source for so I could see what was going on in the code. I am now a Senior Principal Product Manager at Oracle in the Application Grid practice.  The term ‘Application Grid’ refers to a collection of software and hardware products within Oracle that enables customers to build horizontally scalable systems.  This collection of products includes WebLogic, GlassFish, Coherence, Tuxedo and the JRockit/HotSpot JVMs (HotSprocket, maybe?).  Now, with the introduction of Exalogic it has grown to include hardware as well. Wrapping it up… I love technology and have a diverse background ranging from software development to HW and network architecture & tuning.  I have held certifications for being an Oracle Certified DBA, MSCE and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), among others and I have put those to great use over my career.  I am excited about programming & technology and I enjoy helping people learn and be successful.  If you are having challenges with WebLogic, BPM or Service Bus feel free to reach out to me and I’ll be happy to help as I have time. • Provisioning Oracle Solaris 11

You can set up an OS provisioning plan and profile, which specify how an OS is deployed, and then use them to create new operating systems on any number of systems. Oracle Solaris 11 works a bit differently than older versions of Oracle Solaris, though, and even if you've done OS provisioning before you might have some questions about how to provision it. • Cant get lm-sensors to load ATI Radeon temp and fan or output all settings

  New to Linux and having minor issues :/ . I followed this guide initially but did not recieve the proper output and did not show my ATI Radeon HD 5000 temp or fan speed. Then used this guide, same problems exhibited. No issues installing and no errors. I think its not reading i2c for some reason. The proprietary driver is installed and functioning correctly according fglrxinfo. I can use aticonfig commands and view both temp and fan. Any ideas on how to get the ATI Radeon sensors working under 'sensors'? • How can I make a permanently updated copy of a file in a different place to the original file?

  I use two computers, a Linux one for coding and building and a Windows one which has the programming application to load the built program onto the hardware. Both computers have access to a network drive which I use to pass the files from Linux to Windows. My problem is, that every time I build I have to copy the files from where the are created to the network drive. How can I make some sort of file in the network drive on Ubuntu that always mirrors the file which is built in the different location, like a pointer? Thanks!

• lost the vertical scroll function in touchpad after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  just upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10, my Laptop is a Sony SVE1512c6ew, scrolling worked perfectly in Ubuntu 13.04, doesnt work at all in 13.10 Runs Ubuntu 13.10 64bits (btw, tested it i Windows 8 environment works there)Hardware OK, have seen a number of other users with the same problem, well for starters have followed the tip on using the dconf editor, following the path: org gnome settings-daemon peripherals touchpad boxed in all for sure... still cant get vertical scroll...... Any ideas??? • ubuntu integrated graphics suspend + hybrid graphics

  My laptop uses a hybrid graphics hardware. Using the vgaswitcheroo I am able to power off either card and switch between them correctly. The issue is that the system wakes up/resumes from suspend correctly only when using the discrete graphics, or atleast the discrete graphics must be powered on even if the display is connected to the onboard intel card. Has anyone faced this issues? Is there any workaround? I only want to use the integrated card and not the discrete amd card. System Info Intel HD 3000 ATI mobility radeon HD 7600M Ubuntu 12.10

• Workflow: Deploy Oracle Solaris 11 Zones

  One of the new workflows that we've introduced, which is a pretty good example of what workflows can do for you, is the Deploy Oracle Solaris 11 Zones workflow. This workflow was designed to show you everything you need to do in order to create and manage an environment with zones. It tells you what roles are needed, and it shows you the process using this image: The left side shows you the prerequisites for deploying Oracle Solaris 11 Zones - you need to have Ops Center configured on Oracle Solaris 11, have your libraries set up, and have your hardware ready to go. Once you've done that, you can begin the workflow. If you haven't provisioned Oracle Solaris 11, you do so, then create one or more zones, and create a server pool for those zones. Each one of these steps has an existing How-To, which walks you through the process in detail, and the final step of the workflow directs you to the next workflow that you're likely to be interested in - in this case, the Operating Zones workflow.

• Windows XP with Ubuntu 14.04 on 2 separate hard drives

  I am new to Ubuntu. I have Windows XP Professional 32-bit on one 300GB IDE hard drive and Ubuntu 14.04 running on another 61GB IDE hard drive, and I cannot get my Windows XP to boot with Grub! When I select Windows XP from the boot menu, Grub just restarts my computer. The computer I have with those two hard drives is a Dell Optiplex GX240, so the hardware is old, and its BIOS won't let me change the boot priority on the two IDE hard drives. What can I do now? Is there a step I missed when installing Ubuntu? Can I edit Grub to boot Windows XP without messing with the BIOS? Do I have to downgrade to an older release of Ubuntu to make it work? I am willing to reinstall Ubuntu, if that's what it takes.

  Most Busybox questions are related to the fact that users are dropped to a Busybox shell due to some unknown issues at boot time. This must make Busybox one of the most hated pieces of software. My problem is the opposite. I want to deliberately start Busybox at boot time either from GRUB, or even before GRUB. Is this possible? How can I do it? The purpose is to execute some commands before the boot sequence is reinitiated. So basically I want to execute some commands to make some hardware available to the bootloader.

• Asset displays in the UI

  I've seen a little bit of confusion about how the UI displays assets and asset information, so I thought I'd explain how information and actions are displayed.  In Ops Center, operating systems, servers, zones, Oracle VM Servers, and anything else that you can manage are called assets. When you discover them, Ops Center puts together a model in the navigation pane that shows the relationships between the assets. For example: This tree shows three servers, and the Operating Systems on each one. If one of the operating systems was a global zone, we'd see the non-global zones beneath the global zone as well. However, when you select an asset, the info in the center pane and the actions in the actions pane are the ones that apply to that specific asset, and not to its related assets. If you select a server, for example, you'll see service request info and have the option to provision a new OS. If you select an existing OS, you'll see file system information and have the option to update the OS. Actions that apply directly to the hardware aren't visible from the OS view, and vice versa.

• What defines good developer culture? [closed]

  We are a team of 6 people developing applications for mobile devices (Android & iOS). In our company, which consists of many teams responsible for "classic" software development, business intelligence, virtualization, hardware, etc., we are kind of a small startup because we were the first to use agile methods like Scrum and we are open to new technologies and methods. Also our team is pretty young with me being the oldest with 30 years. We would like to further raise productivity and motivation and thus are currently collecting points which make up a good developer/hacker culture and which may be improved in our team/company. This can be points that we can either improve ourselves or have to pass on to management. I would like to know what in your opinion defines good, modern developer culture? • SDL to SFML simple question

  Hey! I've been working on a game in c++ for about a week and a half, and I've been using SDL. However, my current engine only needs the following from whatever library I use: enable double buffering load an image from path into something that I can apply to the screen apply an image to the screen with a certain x,y enable transparency on an image (possibly) image clipping, for sprite sheets. I am fairly sure that SFML has all of this functionality, I'm just not positive. Will someone confirm my suspicions? Also I have one or two questions regarding SFML itself. Do I have to do anything to enable hardware accelerated rendering? How quick is SFML at blending alpha values? (sorry for the less than intelligent question!)

• Programming in the United States Airforce - How hard to get a job doing it? [closed]

  I already know how to program. Been at it for a year; the language I've worked mostly with has been C++, and I'm currently studying x86 assembly programming, with the goal to move towards ARM assembly after I've finished with that. Thus, given my experience and knowledge, I'm curious to know if any "vets" around here have had any excursions in the military doing software/electrical engineering, and how hard it would be to actually get a job doing it - with someone who already has previous experience and knowledge regarding that field, however slight. By definition of "hard", in this context, I suppose I'd be referring to the required knowledge to actually be a "shoe-in" for both low level and high level software/hardware applications. I know hex fairly well, and enough to convert that hex to binary. I also have an ok knowledge of algorithms, such as Binary Search Tree, Linked List, etc. Everything I've learned so far has been self taught for the most part.

  Let's say I have an online game with a downloadable client / browser plugin. I want to track performance of my software and automatically send summary to the server. Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

Over at the British hardware review site Expert Reviews, they subjected a wide selection of HDMI cables to extensive tests in a bid to produce the end-all examination of whether or not a premium HDMI cable could actually produce a better signal. They used capture cards, pixel-by-pixel comparison of output, and other techniques to pick over individual frames until they ultimately reached the same conclusion everyone outside of the Monster sales staff had already reached: you’re getting absolutely no benefit to spending $100 on cable that can be had for under five bucks. • Is the C programming language still used?

  I am a C# programmer, and most of my development is for websites along with a few Windows application. As far as C goes, I haven't used it in a long time, as there was no need to. It came to me as a surprise when one of my friends said that she needs to learn C for testing jobs, while I was helping her learn C#. I figured that someone would only learn C for testing only if there is development done in C. In my knowledge, all the development related to COM and hardware design are also done in C++. Therefore, learning C doesn't make sense if you need to use C++. I also don't believe in historic significance, so why waste time and money in learning C? Is C is still used in any kind of new software development or anything else?

• Wifi disabled on dell Inspiron Mini 10 (1018)

  My netbook cannot access the wifi network, and I cannot enable it. This is the second time this has happenned. The first time, it came back after a lot of restarts and BIOS factory resets. Ubuntu sometimes simply won't connect to any wifi networks, and other times it will say that the wireless is blocked by a hardware switch. I have tried pressing F2 and doing a BIOS reset, with no luck. sudo rfkill list all gives : 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes

• Why does my cursor jump when typing in ubuntu 11.10

  When typing in Ubuntu my cursor jumps around and its not application specific. It doesn't matter or Im filing in a web form, writing an e-mail or using LibreOffice or Lyx. Im using a Sony Vaio 64bit machine. i read a previous question (link below) on this subject which indicates it may have something to do with the touchpad settings. as this has occurred in previous Ubuntu distros Im guess it is somekind of hardware issue. How do you turn of the touchpad when typing to avoid the cursor jumping around? I'd be grateful if anyone can make this stop Stephen

• How do I know if my system is capable of playing 24bit/96kHz sound?

  Let me state for the record that I'm a total noob when it comes to Hi-Fi sound systems, but I am rather picky about the sound quality. Normally I listen to CD recordings ripped to FLAC in 16/44, but I have several albums that are also ripped from vinyls to FLAC in 24/96. But it seems that I can't tell the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit versions (except for some vinyl noises, of course). That can be due to several reasons: my equipment (onboard audio, monitor headphones) isn't good enough to make any difference, my system is not playing audio in 24-bit 96 kHz, I am physically unable to hear the difference. So here is my question, how do I tell if my system can play 24-bit sound with 96 or 192 kHz resolution? And if it can, how do I tell that it plays it instead of downsampling to 16-bit / 44 kHz? Also, what hardware (audio cards, amplifiers, etc.) would you recommend to play such recordings on Ubuntu?
