• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • TrueCrypt-ed Windows XP reseting administrative password

  I have inherited a laptop running Windows XP 64bit professional from a former system admin of my Lab. The laptop is encrypted with TrueCrypt and luckily I have a password for TrueCrypt and can boot and login into the guest account. However this is where my problems starts. There are four account on the laptop three of which do have administrative privileges. However nobody of two formers members of the lab and one current member remember their passwords. I was given the assignment of recovering 2TB of data from that laptop. How does one go about reseting administrative password in Windows in particularly in the presence of TrueCrypt? If you are wondering I have never used Windows in my life so the only thing I usually with any Windows machine is just wipe out entire HDD and install OpenBSD.

  Hi, I have a system that has to be formatted often because of the specific use of it (Use it in internet cafe). I have to install the drivers and apps each time. That is a time consuming and cumbersom task for me. I want to install windows, drivers, apps etc. once and create a backup of the entire C:\ drive, and keep it in a linux partition so that I can restore the OS with all the apps & drivers ready to go! I have ubuntu live CD with me and I have created a linux partition (ext4) in the HDD. My question is: How can I create an ISO image of the C:\ drive (ntfs disk) in Ubuntu and store it in the linux partition?

• Having problems with Grub2 booting Ubuntu from my External Hard Drive

  I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive but it won't boot on my laptop. what do i do? i did some reading and traced the source of the problem to grub2. Apparently, grub2 doesn't use the device's UUID, and uses the linux directory instead (/dev/sdf2). This means that whenever i plug my E-HDD into a system that has a different number of drives connected to it, i won't be able to boot without editting the boot command. I don't understand it too well but that's what i got from what i read. Is there anyway to fix this?

• How do you passthrough native SATA drives to a guest on ESXi?

  I have ESXi 4.0 running on an Intel DX58S0 Mothboardboard with an Intel Core i7 930 processor. VT-d is also enabled. I have three drives in the system, drive 0 is used for ESXi. Drive 1 and 2 contain data from an older machine and show up under the "Storage Adapters" section in configuration. I would like to allow a guest machine to access the data on these drives (as nativly as possible). I have enabled passthrough of the motherboard's built in SATA controller (Intel/Marvell 88SE6121 ). This controller shows up in my guest OS, but the guest shows no drives aside from the normal virtual drive. I have tried a Linux guest and Windows7. I have also configured the host machine to try IDE/RAID/ACHI modes for the SATA controller. Any ideas how I can configure one of my guests to get at the raw data on these drives?

  I have a dual boot (Win 7 + Ubuntu) PC connected via wifi with my music collection on a local HDD. I usually use Rhythmbox on Ubuntu or Winamp on Windows to listen to my music but I'll change if I have to. I also have a Raspberry Pi (low power PC running Debian) in the living room that is usually headless and connected via ethernet. The Raspberry Pi is also connected to my living room speakers via an amp. I would like to be able to stream music from my PC over the network to the linux raspberry pi. What software can I use to do this? Some sort of audio client\server?

• recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

So is there any option in ubuntu to stop the services running just like i do have in windows "msconfig" or mycomputer-manage, and where could i find the details about the services so that i should know what will be its effect if i stop this service. • Computer only booting after POWER ON/OFF 10 times or more?

  Hi fellow geeks, recently my computer started to behave like an old car and won't start up anymore unless I flip the power switch repeatedly. What happens when I power it on: CPU fans spins briefly and very slowly, then it stops Same with GPU fan No BIOS beeps or HDD activity Screen stays black After turning it on and off for like 10 times, it'll eventually boot like normal and run smooth without any problems what-so-ever. But I'm worried it might eventually die completely. Anyone know the most common cause of this? Maybe I should just leave the computer powered on? :)

• Infected Win XP disk not openable on a Vista computer

  How can I read a WinXP partioned disk that is infected and shows up on a USB connection to Win Vista computer as a single partition that Vista cannot see the contents? The XP computer HDD is partioned into 4 partitions. It became infected, and all attempts to clean it have failed. Applications begin to launch, but are then shut down by the infecting agent. Using a major Anti-virus Co. boot disk (which was unable to connect to the Web, probably because the infecting agent stopped it) with virus definitions dated after the disk became infected, the resultant scan showed no infection. I bought a USB cable to connect the IDE drive to my Vista computer, but when I open Win Explorer, it sees the disk, but does not show any contents. It indicates it is a single partition that is valid. However in all the ways I have tried it does not show drive contents. Any suggestions on what to do next?

• MediaPortal crash when scanning my TV Channels

  I tried installing MediaPortal on my old system. I installed & tried both beta & stable releases: Here's the old system specs: Windows XP SP3 512MB DDR 80GB IDE K-World PVR-TV7131 Analog TV-Tuner Inno3d FX5500 128MB 64bit When scanning through the TV-Server, it crashes. I don't know if the incompatibility comes from the hardware or the OS, but my TV Tuner's own Media center app works well. For now, that's what im using. Anyone here familiar with MediaPortal? • New power supply and now HDDs are not recognized

  So I upgraded to a new X4 ULTRA power supply that was recommended to me by a local TigerDirect store. After installing it along with a new liquid cooling system, I booted it up and it automatically fried my CD Drive. After that I noticed that the OS wouldn't start and figured out that none of the 4 HDDs in my computer were being recognized by the BIOS. I feel them spool at a steady pace and have tried new cables and connections but to no avail. I triple checked all of the connections and cables and have no idea what is wrong. This isn't the first time I changed a PS or CPU cooling system but I am at a dead end. Any ideas, aside from buying a USB HDD reader and seeing if they are all fried? Also, this is a stock Gateway mobo with the mobo USB connections already dead. Could the new PS have fried the SATA connections??

• Mysterious xyz.event files appearing

  I am getting mysterious .event files - always empty, created by me a few weeks ago - in several local project directories. They are all Subversion checkouts. They are always named after the directory they reside in, so a directory named pagination will contain a pagination.event file. Does anybody know what this is? Possibly important information: I am working on a Windows 7 Workstation I use NuSphere's PHP IDE (no updates recently) I use TortoiseSVN for version control I set up a Windows 7 backup job recently that ran once, I can' remember when exactly. The event files seem to turn up only in repositories There is no external access to those repositories

• Late Model 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD appears to be off somehow

  Ok, I just got a SSD for my Macbook Pro Late-2011. The specs from what I read are that the laptop is capable of 6gbps, so I got myself a OZC Agility 240gb 6gbps SSD. Decided to join the club and speed test it with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.. and the results are equivilent to that of a 3gbps setup. So.. I am wondering overall is there a configuration setting somewhere I can tweak? The original HD was a 500gb HDD the spinning kind. So I'm figuring maybe thats why there may be a setting somewhere hidden I dunno about that I can tweak, just wanna see if anyone else knows if this is the case. edit should also mention did a fresh factory install, nothing carried over from original hd

• What is fastest way to backup a disk image over LAN?

  Sometimes I boot sysrescd or a similar live linux on a PC to backup the hardrive over local network to my server. I noticed many times, that the transfer speed is not optimal (slower than HDD and network speed). Any rules of thumb what to do and what to avoid? What I typically do is something like: dd bs=16M if=/dev/sda | nc ... # on client nc ... | dd bs=16M of=/destination/disk/backup1 # on server I also "throw" in lzop (other are way too slow) and sometimes on the fly md5sum calculation (both of uncompressed and compress source). I try to add (m)buffer (or other alternatives) to improve throughput (and get a progress indicator). I noticed that even with enough free CPU, adding commands to the pipeline slows things down. Typically the destination is on a NTFS volume (accessed via ntfs-3g, with the _big_writes_ option).

• Windows Java-based apps not working

  After updating the Java JRE to 7u25, many Java-based applications not works as usual, the I upgrade Java to 7u45, and still the apps not working. Minecraft start screen not showing, have to press TAB key to select the Run button and press ENTER to run the game. Netbeans IDE it's running, but none it's showing on the screen. Eclipse and JDownloader are working fine. I cannot run the Java Control Panel, it's only shows the Java icon at the taskbar.   How do you verify what the delimiter for a file is? I'm using eclipse to edit a script file on my windows system that I use to deploy on my unix server. The script specifies file names and I'd like to be certain that eclipse is saving the files with unix end of line delimiters. I've set my preferences to use the Unix Line Delimiter on new files using: Window > Preferences > General > Workspace > "New text file line delimiter" And have changed my script file's line delimiter using. File -> Convert Line Delimiters To Is there a way (preferably with the eclipse IDE) to check that there is no "\r"?

  I am getting an error message to the effect of unable to move files to a single file. I am not trying to do this. What I am trying to do is move files from one folder to another folder (staging) and then deleting the original folder. If you can show me a better way to do this since I am not doing this correctly.   Yesterday I installed .Net Framework 4 as it was required by Liquid XML Studio, but just after installing it, My SQL Server Management Studio stopped working. As soon as open the IDE I get package microsoft sql management studio package failed to load I tried pretty much all the solution posted on the internet but could not get it working, today when I removed the .Net Framework 4, SQL server management studio started working again. Then just to test, I installed the .Net Framework 4 back ... and I started getting the same problem in management studio. I want both on my machine ! how can i do it ? PS : OS is Windows 7

• Determine display or VNC session based on PID

  I frequently VNC into a server where we run many concurrent computationally intensive matlab processes. Sometimes, one of my processes misbehave, which I can see from top, but I have a hard time figuring out which VNC session it's running on, or more specifically, which display it's running on. Suppose I see that PID 8536 looks like a resource hog, and I want to investigate. Because it's a matlab session, I know there is likely an IDE open somewhere, and I want to check to see if anything important is happening before I kill it. We've solved this somewhat awkwardly in the past by identifying which PTY 8536 was launched from, then looking at a process tree to figure out things launched in that context, scrolling up, and seeing the VNC initialization. Seems like there must be a better way to go PID - X Display (or VNC Session).

• Installing VMWare Tools in Windows Server 2008 fails system startup

  I recently created a vmware virtual machine with windows server 2008 enterprise as Guest. My host is Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. I fall into a big trouble which makes my created VM unusable after I've installed VMWare Tools. After installing tools I'm able to run the system only in safe mode. After some event manager analysis I found the issue is with drivers installed by vnmware tools. Any one has got the same issue? Is there any good practice for doing that? • Dell PowerEdge 2950 III running XenServer with 2 VMs gets sluggish after a week and needs rebooted?

  It has weird hangs and then random CPU spikes that do a ton at once. While remoted into the VMs I get an update all at once then it hangs for another 20 seconds. When it lets it go through I get a CPU spike. Basic server specs for the HW node is: 8 CPUs, 16GB ram 1TB HDD total iPERC6 raid 10 The VMs are barely used but I have them spec'd at VM 1: 4 CPUs, 4GB Ram VM2: 4 CPUs 6GB ram The HW node currently says it's total CPU usage is 11% AND Used Memory is at 63%out of 16GB I'm new to this stuff so I'm not sure. I just recently installed this and set it all up. Please advise if you can!

• ASUS P5B Plus motherboard - no any drives found - how to restore RAID array?

  We have a small server machine with an ASUS P5B Plus motherboard and 4 SATA HDDs. The HDDs were configured in a RAID10 array. Up until now, everything worked fine, but now the system doesn't recognize the drives. BIOS is set to RAID, jMicron controller is set to RAID, yet I can't see any of the drives in the BIOS setup, and jMicron BIOS tells me "no any drives found" The HDDs all spin up, I hear no clicking sounds or anything that would suggest HDD error. I did a search on this problem and replaced the SATA cables as suggested, but nothing's changed. What I have in mind is checking the CMOS battery and resetting the BIOS to use IDE mode, but I don't know if it will ruin the RAID system on the HDDs. It is not a critical server and there's only one database running on it (which I have backup of), but I don't want to setup the server from scratch if not necessary. What should I try to restore the RAID array and put the server back to working order?

• NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

  I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.

• 5 x 3GB drives and 4 x 1500GB drive best raid setup?

  Hello, I am building a file server my plan is the have the Operating system on one raid partition and the data storage on another partition. I currently have 5 x 3GB IDE drives that i would like to put the operating system on theses drives are old but that doesnt matter to me at the moment i have a ton of them so for this raid partition i would probably want to be able to pull out dead a drive and rebuild the array. My file partition is going to consist of 4 x 1.5TB SATA drives I would like the maximum storage with some redundancy. Any suggestions to which Raid level i should use would be greatly appreciated and if you could also suggest a PCI or PCI-e raid controller to handle theses arrays. Thanks in Advance, Zen_Silence
