  • question about that concept of linux install in flash card.

    - by Johnny
1.i can't understand why Linux on flash card need install, does it simply copy certain file to certain location in flash card? ---i mean ,plan it in a response file, then one program read the plan in response file and write certain format to flash card. 2.does the file system bind tiedly to the linux kernel? is it possible let each kernel, user, app have its own root? rather than mount everything under one single / "root"

  • How do I create a DSN for ODBC in Linux?

    - by deadprogrammer
I am digging around in a Linux application that supposedly uses DSNs to connet to SQL Server. The connection stopped working and I can't find the credentials that are being used (all I know is the DSN's name). I am familiar with DSNs in Windows, but how are they created and where are they stored in Linux?

  • How Linux programmers create GUI application without using IDE?

    - by CMW
Hi, I have read some comments in some forums saying that Linux programmers usually do not use any IDE. They prefer to use Vim and Emacs to do their programming. If I'm not mistaken, Vim and Emacs are just text editors, similar to notepad, but with syntax highlighting. I just want to know how Linux programmers create complicated GUI application without using any IDE. Thanks.

  • Any way to reserve but not commit memory in linux?

    - by Eloff
Windows has VirtualAlloc, which allows you to reserve a contiguous region of address space, but not actually use any physical memory. Later when you want to use it (or part of it) you call VirtualAlloc again to commit the region of previously reserved pages. This is actually really useful, but I want to eventually port my application to linux - so I don't want to use it if I can't port it later. Does linux have a way to do this?

  • What's the best editor/program for g++ in Linux?

    - by Phenom
So far I've been using vi, but I'm wondering if there's something better to use in Linux. In Windows there's Visual C++, and I guess practically all C++ programmers in Windows use this these days. It has a lot of things in it to help the programmer. What about for Linux?

  • How early can I call kalloc in an arm linux kernel?

    - by Isaac Sutherland
I would like to dynamically allocate memory from the machine_init function in my arm linux kernel. Calling kalloc can result in a complete failure of the system to boot. My debugging tools are very limited so I can't give much more information regarding the failure. Simply put, is it legal to call kalloc from a machine_init function in arm linux, and, if not, is there an alternative?

  • Does anybody know of a USB Postage Scale that's Linux compatible?

    - by Nick
I'm looking for a postage scale that already has linux support (drivers, etc) for a shipping system that I'm working on. I'm planning to use Ubuntu 9.04, but I am willing to switch distro's for compatibility. Does anybody know of any scales that currently work? Is there an open source project that's working on scale drivers or similar? Thanks!

  • What are the common Linux commands for SAN-related activities? How do I check if a LUN is attached to the computer?

    - by Nishant
How do I check if a LUN has been presented to my server? What are the Linux commands for that? Do the LUNs show up in a fdisk -l command like a normal /dev/sda gets listed? What are other commands associated with general SAN related checks in Linux? What is WWN and how does that have any relevance? If we have LUNs, what is the use of multipathing? Bit lengthy but I am not able to get a grasp on the topic. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Linux fsck.ext3 says "Device or resource busy" although I did not mount the disk.

    - by matnagel
I am running an ubuntu 8.04 server instance with a 8GB virtual disk on vmware 1.0.9. For disk maintenance I made a copy of the virtual disk (by making a copy of the 2 vmdk files of sda on the stopped vm on the host) and added it to the original vm. Now this vm has it's original virtual disk sda plus a 1:1 copy (sdd). There are 2 additional disk sdb and sdc which I ignore.) I would expect sdb not to be mounted when I start the vm. So I try tp do a ext2 fsck on sdd from the running vm, but it reports fsck reported that sdb was mounted. $ sudo fsck.ext3 -b 8193 /dev/sdd e2fsck 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008) fsck.ext3: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sdd Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program? The "mount" command does not tell me sdd is mounted: $ sudo mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro) proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) /sys on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=0755) varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777) udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755) devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620) /dev/sdc1 on /mnt/r1 type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro) /dev/sdb1 on /mnt/k1 type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro) securityfs on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw) When I ignore the warning and continue the fsck, it reported many errors. How do I get this under control? Is there a better way to figure out if sdd is mounted? Or how is it "busy? How to unmount it then? How to prevent ubuntu from automatically mounting. Or is there something else I am missing? Also from /var/log/syslog I cannot see it is mounted, this is the last part of the startup sequence: kernel: [ 14.229494] ACPI: Power Button (FF) [PWRF] kernel: [ 14.230326] ACPI: AC Adapter [ACAD] (on-line) kernel: [ 14.460136] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input3 kernel: [ 14.639366] udev: renamed network interface eth0 to eth1 kernel: [ 14.670187] eth1: link up kernel: [ 16.329607] input: ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/ kernel: [ 16.367540] parport_pc 00:08: reported by Plug and Play ACPI kernel: [ 16.367670] parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE] kernel: [ 19.425637] NET: Registered protocol family 10 kernel: [ 19.437550] lo: Disabled Privacy Extensions kernel: [ 24.328857] loop: module loaded kernel: [ 24.449293] lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven). kernel: [ 26.075499] EXT3 FS on sda1, internal journal kernel: [ 28.380299] kjournald starting. • Using Linux LVM, can I change the number of stripes and "rebalance" the logical volume?

    - by mss
I created a RAID10 by adding two RAID1 md devices as physical volumes to a volume group. Unfortunately it looks like I forgot to specify the number of stripes when I created the logical volumes (it was late): PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree /dev/md312 volume lvm2 a- 927.01G 291.01G /dev/md334 volume lvm2 a- 927.01G 927.01G I know that I can move all the data of a logical volume from one physical volume to another with pvmove. It also looks like lvextend supports an -i switch to change the number of stripes. Is there any way to combine these two, ie. change the number of stripes and "rebalance" the data over the stripes based on the allocation policy? According to this mail by Ross Walker from March 2010 it isn't possible but maybe this has changed since then.

  • How to setup linux permissions for the WWW folder?

    - by Xeoncross
Updated Summery The /var/www directory is owned by root:root which means that no one can use it and it's entirely useless. Since we all want a web server that actually works (and no-one should be logging in as "root"), then we need to fix this. Only two entities need access. PHP/Perl/Ruby/Python all need access to the folders and files since they create many of them (i.e. /uploads/). These scripting languages should be running under nginx or apache (or even some other thing like FastCGI for PHP). The developers How do they get access? I know that someone, somewhere has done this before. With however-many billions of websites out there you would think that there would be more information on this topic. I know that 777 is full read/write/execute permission for owner/group/other. So this doesn't seem to be needed as it leaves random users full permissions. What permissions are need to be used on /var/www so that... Source control like git or svn Users in a group like "websites" (or even added to "www-data") Servers like apache or lighthttpd And PHP/Perl/Ruby can all read, create, and run files (and directories) there? If I'm correct, Ruby and PHP scripts are not "executed" directly - but passed to an interpreter. So there is no need for execute permission on files in /var/www...? Therefore, it seems like the correct permission would be chmod -R 1660 which would make all files shareable by these four entities all files non-executable by mistake block everyone else from the directory entirely set the permission mode to "sticky" for all future files Is this correct? Update: I just realized that files and directories might need different permissions - I was talking about files above so i'm not sure what the directory permissions would need to be. Update 2: The folder structure of /var/www changes drastically as one of the four entities above are always adding (and sometimes removing) folders and sub folders many levels deep. They also create and remove files that the other 3 entities might need read/write access to. Therefore, the permissions need to do the four things above for both files and directories. Since non of them should need execute permission (see question about ruby/php above) I would assume that rw-rw-r-- permission would be all that is needed and completely safe since these four entities are run by trusted personal (see #2) and all other users on the system only have read access. Update 3: This is for personal development machines and private company servers. No random "web customers" like a shared host. Update 4: This article by slicehost seems to be the best at explaining what is needed to setup permissions for your www folder. However, I'm not sure what user or group apache/nginx with PHP OR svn/git run as and how to change them. Update 5: I have (I think) finally found a way to get this all to work (answer below). However, I don't know if this is the correct and SECURE way to do this. Therefore I have started a bounty. The person that has the best method of securing and managing the www directory wins.

  • Linux HA cluster w/Xen, Heartbeat, Pacemaker. domU does not failover to secondary node

    - by Kendall
I am having the followig problem with an OenSuSE + Heartbeat + Pacemaker + Xen HA cluster: when the node a Xen domU is running on is "dead" the Xen domU running on it is not restarted on the second node. The cluster is setup with two nodes, each running OpenSuSE-11.3, Heartbeat 3.0, and Pacemaker 1.0 in CRM mode. For storage I am using a LUN on an iSCSI SAN device; the LUN is formatted with OCFS2 and managed with LVM. The Xen domU has two logical volumes; one for root and the other for swap. I am using IPMI cards for STONITH devices, and a dedicated ethernet link for heartbeat communications. The ha.cf file is as follows: keepalive 1 deadtime 10 warntime 5 udpport 694 ucast eth1 auto_failback off node dhcp-166 node stage use_logd yes crm yes My resources look as follows: shocrm(live)configure# show node $id="5c1aa924-bba4-4f95-a367-6c9a58ac4a38" dhcp-166 node $id="cebc92eb-af24-4833-aaf0-672adf80b58e" stage primitive Xen-Util ocf:heartbeat:Xen \ meta target-role="Started" \ operations $id="Xen-Util-operations" \ op start interval="0" timeout="60" start-delay="0" \ op stop interval="0" timeout="120" \ params xmfile="/etc/xen/vm/xen-util" primitive my-stonith stonith:external/ipmi \ params hostname="dhcp-166" ipaddr="192.168.3.106" userid="ADMIN" passwd="xxx" \ op monitor interval="2m" timeout="60s" primitive my-stonith2 stonith:external/ipmi \ params hostname="stage" ipaddr="192.168.3.105" userid="ADMIN" passwd="xxx" \ op monitor interval="2m" timeout="60s" property $id="cib-bootstrap-options" \ dc-version="1.0.9-89bd754939df5150de7cd76835f98fe90851b677" \ cluster-infrastructure="Heartbeat" The Xen domU config file is as follows: name = "xen-util" bootloader = "/usr/lib/xen/boot/domUloader.py" #bootargs = "xvda1:/vmlinuz-xen,/initrd-xen" bootargs = "--entry=xvda1:/boot/vmlinuz-xen,/boot/initrd-xen" memory = 4096 disk = [ 'phy:vg_xen/xen-util-root,xvda1,w', 'phy:vg_xen/xen-util-swap,xvda2,w', ] root = "/dev/xvda1" vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3e:42:42:06' ] #vfb = [ 'type=vnc,vncunused=0,vnclisten=192.168.3.172' ] extra = "" Say domU "Xen-Util" is running on node "stage"; if "stage" goes down, "Xen-Util" does not restart on node "dhcp-166". It seems to want to try as an "xm list" will show it for a few seconds and if you "xm console xen-util" it will give a message like "copying /boot/kernel.gz from xvda1 to /var/lib/xen/tmp/kernel.a53gs for booting". However, it never gets past that, eventually gives up, and no longer appears in "xm list". Now, when node "stage" comes back online after being power cycled, it detects that "Xen-Util" isn't running, and starts it (on stage). I've tried starting "Xen-Util" on node "dhcp-166" without the cluster running, and it works fine. No problems. So, I know it works in that respect. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • How do I determine if my controller is in IDE or AHCI mode in Linux?

    - by philcolbourn
I have an old MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) - but I suspect an answer would apply to many MacBook Pros. It has an Intel IDE/SATA controller (ICH8M/ICH8M-E). I have installed a patched MBR that is supposed to put my controller into AHCI mode. It does this by setting some controller port value that I don't understand. This seems to work as I get this from lspci: 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 03) Now most, perhaps all, sites that provide a solution (enabling AHCI) suggest that after a sleep/wake cycle that a controller will revert to IDE mode due to how Apple support Windows. They recommend disabling sleep. From author of patchedcode.bin I think Enabling AHCI for Windows on MacBooks NB: I do not have bootcamp installed and I do not have Windows installed. Is there a way to prove that my controller is in IDE or AHCI mode? • Getting at fsid under Linux? Or an alternate way of identifying filesystems?

    - by larsks
In an environment with automounted home directories, such that the same filesystem exported by a fileserver may be mounted multiple times on the client, I would like to authoritatively be able to identify whether two mountpoints are in fact the same filesystem. That is, if the remote server exports: /home And the local client has: # mount fileserver:/home/l/lars on /home/lars type nfs (rw...) fileserver:/home/b/bob on /home/bob type nfs (rw...) I am looking for a way to identify that both /home/lars and /home/bob are in fact the same filesystem. In theory this is what the fsid result of the statvfs structure is for, but in all cases, for both local and remote filesystems, I am finding that the value of this structure member is 0. Is this some sort of client-side issue? Or do most modern NFS servers simply decline to provide a useful fsid? The end goal of all of this is to robustly interpret the output from the quota command for NFS filesystems. For example, given the example above, running quota as myself may return something like: Disk quotas for user lars (uid 6580): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace otherserver:/vol/home0/a/alice 12 52428800 52428800 4 4294967295 4294967295 fileserver:/home/l/lars 9353032 9728000 10240000 124018 0 0 ...the problem here being that there exists a quota for me on otherserver which is visible in the results of the quota command, even though my home directory is actually on a different device. My plan was to look up the fsid for each mountpoint listed in the quota output and check to see if it matched the fsid associated with my home directory. It looks like this won't work, so...any suggestions?

  • Can I change the user id of a user on one Linux server to match another server in /etc/passwd?

    - by user76177
I have a Rails application that is on a virtual machine (RHEL 6) and it's database is on dedicated hardware (also RHEL 6). The app server has an NFS directory from the db server mounted and accessible. It needs to write images to that server that are uploaded via the app. Background processes on the db server need to read and write to the same directory, as they perform resizing operations on the uploaded files. Right now none of this is working, because the user ids are different between the two systems. I only need this to work for this one application, so it is way too much overhead to put an LDAP system in place. Can I simply change the user id of this one user in one of the systems, or will that cause mass chaos? UPDATE: The fix worked, at least on local devices. Unfortunately the device I have mounted to the main db server still thinks my user id is 502 instead of 506. Do I need to remount that device, or is there an NFS daemon I can stop and restart to refresh it?
