I was wondering if it's worth pursuing a graduate degree in Information Technology (not CS). -How much is a master's degree in Information Technology worth? By this I mean how marketable does it make you, and how valuable is the education itself. -How does its worth compare to a master's in CS? -What types of employers are looking for the IT master's degree vs. a Computer Science master's degree? -What's the most valuable thing an Information Technology degree can give, that someone wouldn't have without the degree? • What is the standard way of delivering HTML5 games to portals and such?

  Let me explain what I mean by "standard way of delivering"... Think about Flash games sites. Flash games can be delivered as a single file, either hosted by the site, or, I guess, provided by someone else. HTML5 games, on the other hand, don't have something so standard. Usually, they have their own page, and portals just link to that page. I think that it greatly hinders the purpose of that portal, because, well, you want people to stay on your site and look for other games. Now, I think that a some kind of iframe way of delivering games would help solve this problem greatly. I saw some games doing that, and they were often included on tutorial sites to show a live example, which is obviously a great thing. So, is there a standard at all? Any suggestions? Can you create a game that just preloads itself in an iframe (I heard something about a "single document" or something)?

I would like to hear from some people who feel they've become adept at interviewing developers. What's the secret to making sure you hire someone whose work actually looks as good as their resume? Please try to keep your answers concise. I understand this question has multiple answers and that's why it doesn't fit the format of this site well. So at least refrain from offering your opinions. • Help with timebased scoring algorithm

  Im trying to devise an appropriate scoring system for my game. The game in essense has a finite number of tasks to complete (say 20) and the quicker you complete these task, the more points you get. I had devised a basic way of doing this using bands of time multiplied by a score for that band multiplied by the number of tasks solved within that time band i.e. (Time Band) = (Points) 1-5 sec = 15, 5-10 secs = 10, 10-20 secs = 5, 20-30 secs = 3, 40 secs onwards = 1, So for example if I did 3 tasks in the 1-5sec band i'd get 15*3=45points, if i found 10 in the 20-30sec band i'd get 3*10=30 points. Im sure there is a more mathematical way of doing this using powers of some kind but I just can't think how and hoping someone has already done something smilar.. Many thanks in advance

Can someone please point out what the mistake is?

• phishing attack. Where do I start the cleanup?

  I'm a newbie webmaster. I've got a domain and a site... and no clue about the web (I'm OK with files and programs... ) I got a message from google that my site is a possible phishing site, with a link the the suspect page: http://www.mydomain.com/~phishers/Paypal/us/Confirm.php needless to say, I didn't put that up. Can someone point me to a good tutorial on what to do now? I'd like to figure out what happened so I can defend against it the next time around. How do I identify what kind of attach this is? Also, what is the tilde doing in the URL path? I couldn't find any path like this on my hosting account, so I'm not entirely sure how to delete it.

• My gnome terminal keep opening new window

  I actually want to change the default window position of gnome-terminal in my Ubuntu 12.04 system. After some search, I found some one else use the command gnome-terminal --geometry=120x80+50+50 to set the default position. And I actually don't know where to paste the command, so I pasted it to 'custome command' field of terminal's profile. Now when I open one terminal, it just keep opening new ones and I have no way to stop it other than ctrl+C. I even removed .gconf/gnome-termial/ folder and it didn't worked. Can someone help me?

• Is it legal or good idea to have a backup of all client sites on my own server

  I have seen many times that if we build a website for a client then there is a possibility that this site gets changed over a period of time. I was thinking that from now onwards whichever site I make I will host a copy of the site on a personal server. Like client1.myserver.com so that even if they change it I have the copy of it. So that if I need to show someone or I need to refer myself few things I have the proof there. I will not make them public but will password protect it. I want to know whether this is legal and a good idea or not.

• Why are PPA's designed for only latest version?

  Why are PPA's set to only retain the latest version of the software? I ask because I just installed Blender 2.69 and it constantly crashes on me; I then decided to just install 2.68a but found that it is IMPOSSIBLE to install an older version of software using the Ubuntu software center. I turned to possibly seeing if the PPA retained an older version but have found most PPA's remove older versions as they are designed to only offer the latest. How does this sound like a good idea? What if, for example, someone releases a version of their software that constantly crashes and the user wishes to get an older version but because the way PPA's are designed they cannot. Sounds familiar... To add insult to injury, I was easily able to role back Internet Explorer to version 9 on a machine at work today; that is just sad.

• Why do Git users say that Subversion does not have all the source code locally?

  I'm only going on what I've read on SO, so forgive me, but all I read says that one major advantage of Git over Subversion is that Git gives all the source code to the developer locally, not having to do anything on the server. With my limited using of SVN and TortoiseSVN, I had all the source code, or at least I thought I did. For example, I have a website. I upload it to SVN. I am still running my website locally, aren't I? If someone submits a change and I'm not connected, it wouldn't matter if I had Git or not, until I reconnect to the server. I do not understand. I'm not asking for a rehash of one vs. the other except this one point.

• Problems with Intel graphics and external display

  I have Asus Zenbook ux31 with Intel HD 3000 GPU and Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits. I usually use external monitor and when update GPU controller it removes previous configuration. So after updates Ubuntu only detect external monitor and when I enter to Ubuntu with laptop's monitor Unity doesn't start and I only see black screen. If I re-install Ubuntu all works fine until next GPU update :(( Another think that after some GPU update Ubuntu doesn't detect fine monitor and I have to restart 1-2 times Ubuntu to Unity starts fine ¬¬ Someone have some problem and know some solution? I hope some day Intel GPU will work fine with Ubuntu!

• How to report abuse to website hosting company (GoDaddy)

  I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask such a question... Let's say that a website posted a picture of me, without my consent, and I want to be removed (it's something private, could compromise my career if it's seen by someone that shouldn't). I sent them an email asking nicely that they should remove it, but they didn't respond and the picture is still there. Using 'Whois' I found that the website is hosted by GoDaddy. Is there a way (an email address, for ex.) to report to GoDaddy that one of the sites they're hosting does something illegal and to force them to remove the photo? I searched the site and found nothing about such a thing. Thnaks in advance!

  I'm in the planning stages of a new webapp, and I am leaning strongly toward a multitenancy model. The app has a file storage function, where the user can upload (and operate on) files. I would like the ability of the user to share these files, however. How is this typically accomplished in a multi-tenant model? The example would be something like google docs. Each user has their own files; they can edit and tag and build collections with these files. Then, they can share a doc or a collection with someone else for collaboration. If every user has their own Database and tables, what strategy would one use to allow this kind of sharing while minimizing duplication of files and associated metadata?

  I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. • Geographic location settings

  I am building an website. It has an .nl domain. Now only my domain is showing up on google.nl I hope I can change this somehow that it could be findable in all google's (like google.com / co.uk) and so on. If I look on google forums. They say go to webmaster tools and change your geographic position over there. But I have added this site and I am not able to change it there because there is no select box. I dont have any idea were to search (yes I searched on google offcourse) or where to ask for this special problem. So maybe here can someone redirect me or explain me what is possible and what not. I have a bit of a passion for average end-users suggesting the kinds of software they want and they way they think their applications and computers could work. I'm interested in joining the Ubuntu Brainstorm team, maybe to facilitate ideas not getting buried and making it not seem like a dead platform.   I need to setup a cronjob on my webhost. The documentation for my webapp reads as follows: you will need to create following cronjob: /public_html/cake/console/cake -app /public_html/app master Also, I want any output written to a log file. My hosts documentation says this: You can have cron send an email everytime it runs a command. If you do not want an email to be sent for an individual cron job you can redirect the command's output to /dev/null like this: mycommand /dev/null 2&1 Can someone help me write the cron job? I dont know the syntax at all. Thanks for the help!

• Should I force users to update an application?

  I'm writing an application for a medium sized company that will be used by about 90% of our employees and our clients. In planning for the future we decided to add functionality that will verify that the version of the program that is running is a version that we still support. Currently the application will forcequit if the version is not among our supported versions. Here is my concern. Hypothetically, in version 2.0.0.1 method "A" crashes and burns in glorious fashion and method "B" works just fine. We release 2.0.0.2 to fix method A and deprecate version 0.1. Now if someone is running 0.1 to use method B they will be forced to update to fix something that isn't an issue for them right now. My question is, will the time saved not troubleshooting old, unsupported versions outweigh the cost in usability?

I have domain "www.mydomain.com" where I have magento website running, we are in development stage so I did URL forwarding "www.mydomain.com" to "www.mydomain.net" and we have under-construction page on "www.mydomain.net'. Because we do not want to show development. I also have subdomain "beta.mydomain.com" which I pointed to "www.mydomain.com/index.php" which works fine. But how can I show this without changing URL in browser from "beta.mydomain.com" to "www.mydomain.com/index.php" this we want to show our development to management.

• Is there any guarantee about the graphical output of different GPUs in DirectX?

  Let's say that I run the same game in two different computers with different GPUs. If for example they are both certified for DirectX 10. Is there a guarantee that the output for a given program (game) is going to be the same regardless the manufacturer or model of the GPU? I am assuming the configurable settings are exactly the same in both cases. I heard that it is not the case for DirectX 9 and older, but that it is true for DirectX 10. If someone could provide a source confirming or denying it, it would be great. Also what is the guarantee offered. Will the output be exactly the same or just perceptually the same to the human eye?
