    All major data carriers these days use fiber optic links these days. And data transmission occurs at the speed of light, is that correct? If data transmission does indeed occur at the speed of light, is it also correct to assume that data transmission will never ever be faster?

  • Firefox: non-Vimperator way to do mouseless browsing?

    Is it possible to do efficient browsing with Firefox using only the keyboard (like in Opera)? By efficient I mean something faster than using TAB - this takes far too long. The arrow keys should be for navigation (in Opera it is Shift + arrow key). It can done with the Vimperator add-on, but isn't there a simpler way? Update 2: the closest to Opera's way is to enable caret navigation (F7 toggles this mode). It doesn't jump between links so it is a little bit slower, but the normal navigation (arrow keys, page up, page down, etc.) works and the focus/caret/cursor follows (in contrast to a text editor for page up/down). And text can be selected and copied like in a text editor. The biggest drawback is that in practice it is necessary to switch in and out of caret mode. And there is no indication of which mode is currently active. Update 1: a work-around (proposed by several but is not really what I am looking for) can be used if 3 settings are changed (to make it practical). After these changes the first few letters of a link text can be typed and that link will selected so pressing Enter will open it. Using the work-around the screen will jump around if it is a long page as it does not restrict itself to the current visible page, but it is usable. First settings change: menu Tools/Options/Advanced/tab General/Accessibility/Search for text when I start typing Turn this option on. Second settings change: set option to only go to links; in address bar enter: about:config followed by Enter. Then: press "I'll be careful, I promise", find the line accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, select it and change the value to True by either hitting Enter or Shift+F10/Toggle (accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly is on line 11 when I tried). Third settings change: turn off case-sensitivity. Set accessibility.typeaheadfind.casesensitive to 0 (same procedure as for accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, see above. When Enter is pressed a dialog box will appear with the current value. Type 0 and press Enter). To use: type some part of the link. If there are several possibilities use Ctrl+G (or F3) to jump between them. Use Ctrl+Enter to open in a new tab. Platform: Firefox 3.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit SP2.

  • Microsoft Windows 64-bit application development best practises installation folder.

    My problem is that a vendor is providing me with a 64bit application (packed in a 64bit installer) but it goes and installs to the x86 (Program Files) Folder and he keeps telling me its OK but I want it to install in the Program Files directory; as the 32 bit version does that and scripts for the app are developed based on this assumption. Can someone direct me to the Microsoft recommended best practices for 64bit applications(links). Thanks in advance.

    Does anyone know how to change the layout (either option or extension) for Thunderbird 3 to make it look like the default layout in Outlook? Basically, in Vertical View, I can get my Folders on the left, next to a 2 line listing of each message (Sender and Time line 1, Subject on line 2), and Message Pane on right?   • Is it possible to install custom software on Amazon EC2

    I'm trudging through the Amazon docs for a quick answer, but while I'm looking I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here. My client uses custom software that uses (wait for it) Microsoft Excel to store data as opposed a RDBMS. Either way, their server is outdated and they are interested in using Amazon's cloud services, but would installing this software be possible, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Links are welcome!   • How to get wireless working (properly) with Sitecom Wireless USB micro adapter 300N on Windows 7?

    The question says it all, but more detail follows ;) I've got a new computer that runs Windows 7 64-bits (Home Edition) and I'd like to connect it to my wireless home network (Sitecom wireless gigabit router 300N wl-352 v1 002) with a Sitecom wireless USB micro adaptapter 300 wl-352 V2 001. After installing the router (i.e. connected to the modem and power) and ensuring that wireless is indeed enabled, I've installed the driver of the USB adapter on the new computer described above. After the installation (drivers and utility on CD) completes successfull I rebooted my computer and inserted the USB adapter. After discovering the right network and connecting to it using the network key, a connection is succesfully made. (Using the Sitecom 300N USB Wireless LAN utility). In the LAN utility I can see that the signal strength is approximately 50% and connection quality is approximately 80%. Judging from these numbers I assumed that all was fine and started to use the connection (reading news on nu.nl, a dutch news site), but noticed that the connection was lost several times in a very short time span, but each time the connections was resumed, resulting in the 50/80 percent numbers described above. However, the website was not loaded completely and often a timeout would be reported. When inspecting the drivers through Device Management (Windows' Apparaatbeheer in dutch) there were no errors/warnings; everything seemed to be in order. In an attempt to solve this, I downloaded the latest drivers for the USB adapter, but the problems remained. Finally I tried to connect the computer with a Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 108. This process was a troublesome since I had to download a driver (from the site above) and tell Windows (7) to use the Windows Vista driver when installing the new hardware, since there is (was) no Windows 7 driver available. This resulted in a usable connection, although not very stable when reconfiguring the router. Which took the form of selecting a different wireless channel on the router, even using the Sitecom utility mentioned above to check if there were other networks communicating on that channel (and thus picking a channel that was not used by other networks). Again no result when changing back to the Sitecom USB adapter. Note that this means (I think) that I could use the internet connection with the Siemens adapter, meaning the problem was not in the router. So: How to get wireless working (properly) with Sitecom Wireless USB micro adapter 300N on Windows 7? PS Sorry, but should be able to post one link, while I had links in place for the USB adapter, router and the siemens adapter in place as well, but I'm not (yet) allowed to post these...   • KeyPass - KeyPassHttp refuses to be recognised as a plugin

    I'm trying to make KeyPass run on my Windows 7 machine, I've downloaded and installed KeePass, aim to use it alongside Passifox However, downloading and copying the KeePassHttp executable to the C:\Program Files (x86)\KeePass Password Safe folder, however it refuses to show up in the KeyPass plugins window. Please help, I've tried download KeePassHttp using multiple links from github and passifox itself using Firefox and even wget. Also I've tried pinging http://localhost:19455 but nothing was found. Any ideas I'm at a loss.

Now i want to get rid of the function and just leave the data with the link. So i do Paste Special -- Values Which does the job but then the link is removed. How can i paste the values and keep the hyperlink?

  • Free or inexpensive compression proxy

    Hi, I'm looking for a way to minimize the net traffic use with my netbook mobile internet connection. Recently I managed to install Opera Mini on the XP and the opera approach of compressing the data helped a lot. But I would like to do the same with my favorite browser using http proxy that compress the data "on the fly". But searching for "compression proxy servers" I could not find any working host/port links. Is it a brand-new technology and therefore expensive or rarely available?

  • Immersed versus 'normal' version of chrome

    I installed chrome, and now I have 2 ways to open chrome: if I open chrome from the metro-tile menu, I get the full-screen, immersed, windows-8 style chrome. If I start the link I got on my desktop, I get the windowed version. Apart from the fact that I would like to know how I might do that on purpose, I also want to know what's going on so I can use the windowed version (I prefer that for a browser) from all links I have, especially the one in the menu.

To start the application there are links on the client's desktops which runs the \fileserver\AppPath\exe. Would you agree with such a layout? What if 'the client' is a terminal-server and 'the clients' means a terminal-server-farm?

Have Google'd a little but I can't seam to find a topic which the links to potential products still are active.
