Dependency problem while missing package is already installed

I am trying to install a program but I am getting a dependency error. The error clearly points out: Dependency is not satisfiable: libc6-amd64 (>= 2.14) I went on to investigate and I found out that I have 2.19 version installed, actually: alex@MaD-pc:~$ apt-cache policy libc6-amd64 libc6-amd64:i386: Installed: 2.19-0ubuntu6 Candidate: 2.19-0ubuntu6 Version table: *** 2.19-0ubuntu6 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Why am I getting this error if I already have this package? I also should probably mention that the system is 100% up to date. I run the updates and upgrades, restarted the system and then tried to install the package again with the same error popping up. Edit 1: I am using amd64 but I have installed some 32-bit libraries required by some program installed via wine if I recall correctly.

Is it bad SEO to embed an img tag in the middle of a sentence?

I recently received a web mockup that included a sidebar with a short paragraph of narrow text; a quote from a person. At the end of the quote, the mockup had a circular portrait of the person floated to the right, hanging off the edge of the block, with the text flowing around the edge of it. It looked like this, where "TEXT" is the text, and "o" is the portrait TEXTTEXTTEXTTEXTTEX TEXTTEXTTEXTTE TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooo TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooooo TEXTTEXTTEXT ooooooo ooooo The easiest way to do this would be to put the tag for the portrait somewhere in the markup of the text, and float it right. But the HTML will look like, in that case: TEXTTEXTTE<img src="..." style="float: right;">XTTEXTTEXT and I fear this would be bad for SEO. Does anyone know? The other option is putting the at the end, absolutely positioning it, and using manual line breaks -- which sucks for my responsive design.

I am often interested in the installation triggers (postinst, postrm) or certain parts (/usr/share or /etc) of packages. Currently, I am running the next command to retrieve the source code: apt-get source [package-name] The downside is, this file is often much bigger than the binary package and does not reflect the installation tree. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

How should I synchronize configurations and data across computers?

Imagine I have three Ubuntu computers home, laptop, beach-house. They all have the same version of Ubuntu, 10.04 installed, and are kept up to date from the repositories. I use f-spot, thunderbird, and google-chrome on all of the computers. Is there a way to keep the data and configuration in sync across them, without requiring constant connectivity for normal (non-synchronous) usage? For example, they should be usable without network connectivity, so something like NFS won't work. An ideal solution would not require manual action to start the syncing process.

MacMini (running Ubuntu 14.04) loses wlan connection when uploading larger files (several 100 mb) via ownCloud

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on an old MacMini with the intention of running it as a homeserver. Additionally I installed ownCloud and tried to sync some files both from a laptop running elementaryOS and a desktop running windows 7. Syncing smaller files workes like a charm (4000 files at <10mb each) but when it comes to bigger files (1 GB ubuntu iso e.g.) the upload failes after 20-100mb. I can't ping the server anymore and the server can't ping me. It still shows up in our router as connected though. Disconnecting and reconnecting the wlan connection fixes the issue until the next attempt at syncing. I am interested in how each individual smart phone is allowed to handle data transfers within a third-party app. I am interested in designing apps that allow customers to update, transfer, download, etc. data from their smart phone to their personal computer and vice-versa. (Ranging from just text, to XML, to a Relational Database) I only have experience with the Ipod Touch before and one particular app that maintained all the data on an online server, so to update the data on your pc or iphone you had to go online, are there other ways to do it? Like bluetooth, wireless LAN, USB, etc? I believe Apple has certain policies on this in order to control the App Store and individual Iphones. I suppose each company has a particular policy on how an app is allowed to transfer data to another system, does anyone have a good understanding of this? Thank you.

Install problem on UEFI, Windows 8 new desktop

I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller. If I select the dvd drive with the CD in it I get the message "Secure boot violation, Invalid structure detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." With all other selections it just boots into windows. So where do I go from here?

MySQLwith mutiple threads and processes

I'm developing a telecom messaging platform in C, and I'm going to need multiple processes to be working with MySQL DB. How can I make two processes read/write to/from a Mysql DB and, if/when one of them goes down, get the other to seamlessly take over the work until the dead process gets back to work? I was thinking/googling some options and am stuck in place where I don't know which one to choose. What I think so far is that table lock is not the best option to go for, as it will stall the other process until the table is unlocked. The other option is to use row-level locks or manual locks, but I can't find the best way to do it.

SQL Server: Writing CASE expressions properly when NULLs are involved

We’ve all written a CASE expression (yes, it’s an expression and not a statement) or two every now and then. But did you know there are actually 2 formats you can write the CASE expression in? This actually bit me when I was trying to add some new functionality to an old stored procedure. In some rare cases the stored procedure just didn’t work correctly. After a quick look it turned out to be a CASE expression problem when dealing with NULLS. In the first format we make simple “equals to” comparisons to a value: SELECT CASE <value> WHEN <equals this value> THEN <return this> WHEN <equals this value> THEN <return this> -- ... more WHEN's here ELSE <return this> END Second format is much more flexible since it allows for complex conditions. USE THIS ONE! SELECT CASE WHEN <value> <compared to> <value> THEN <return this> WHEN <value> <compared to> <value> THEN <return this> -- ... more WHEN's here ELSE <return this> END Now that we know both formats and you know which to use (the second one if that hasn’t been clear enough) here’s an example how the first format WILL make your evaluation logic WRONG. Run the following code for different values of @i. Just comment out any 2 out of 3 “SELECT @i =” statements. DECLARE @i INTSELECT @i = -1 -- first resultSELECT @i = 55 -- second resultSELECT @i = NULL -- third resultSELECT @i AS OriginalValue, -- first CASE format. DON'T USE THIS! Syncing Files between workgroup server and Ubuntu workstation

Recently I have decided that I can't make Windows 8 my primary OS on my laptop as it is just too cumbersome to deal with. I am made the switch to Ubuntu and so far so good. Using Windows I have been able to cache folders on my workgroup server using a feature called "Client Side Cache" that allows me to take a copy of my personal files offline while I am in the field, then later I when I return any changes get pushed up to the server and my local cache is refreshed. This feature is completely client driven although characteristics of it (who and what can be cached, and if caching is automatic) can be controlled via a policy assigned as part of a directory membership. Can anyone suggest a linux replacement for this feature? Is there a better way of handling this?

Upgrade to Precise leaving system unbootable

I've upgraded our server's system from Lucid to Precise and as far as I can tell, it left the system in an un-bootable state. I've read many responses in different threads but my problem has a twist. When we boot the server, it says The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery but when I press any of those buttons, it doesn't do anything. I can't boot to any recovery console, and as it is a server and I'm accessing it via iDRAC, there's not much I can do.

In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team. Inserting x200s into (ultrabase) docking station mirror screen is always activated leading to non optimal resolution

Builtin LCD should be 1440x900 External LCD should be 1920x1080 If X200s is inserted into docking station the option mirror screen is always activated leading to a resolution of 1152x864 which looks terrible on the builtin and external lcd. My manual configuration for docking mode (seperate screens with maximum resolution) should be respected, but "Make Default" button has no consequences. I want to create a "Human powered document processing" website in a formed as a gaming mechanic that will prompt volunteers to weed out text missed by OCR (optical character reader) The challenge is that the OCR output often contains errors and omissions, which hampers searches. Manual corrections is needed to weed out these mistakes, so that the text become machine readable.. I want to accomplish these task by splitting dull repetitive task into tiny microtasks and distributing then to register contributors on my site. I want to digitalized pedigree books into an online database. I want to recreate recaptcha and http://www.digitalkoot.fi/en/splash all roll into one.. Help!!!! What programing languages is best needed to create a recapctch type website and is there any open source project similar to this I can use? I need a some directions to begin this project, so all and any help will be great.

cryptsetup partitions not detected at boot

I installed a fresh 12.04 and tried to mimic what I had for 10.04. swap should be encrypted with a urandom key and there's another partition that will contain home and other directories. # cat /etc/crypttab | grep -v '^#' | grep -v '^$' cryptswap /dev/sda5 /dev/urandom swap encriptado /dev/sda6 # grep -e 'cryptswap' -e 'encriptado' /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/cryptswap swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/encriptado /encriptado ext4 defaults 0 0 I also apt-get install cryptsetup When I boot, the system says (try to translate) that either the partition is not found or is not ready. I should wait, press M for manual or S to jump over. What am I missing here?

Hibernation option went missing

In my Ubuntu 12.04, the hibernation option was working well and fine. However, I installed Debian on another partition recently and when I again tried to boot to Ubuntu, I got a message on the boot splash screen saying : The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery. After logging into Ubuntu, I find that my hibernation option has gone missing. Is there anyway to recover the hibernation option?
