• Computer refuses to boot either ubuntu disk I'm using

  I'm attempting to set up an Amahi server, and thus have taken an older PC and wiped it clean using DBAN. I'm now in the process of installing Ubuntu, but for some reason the computer refuses to recognize either form of Ubuntu I throw at it, even though it recognizes the Windows XP CD fine. Things it can't be: Boot order - I've tripple checked A bad DVD - I've booted the live CD off of my Mac just fine. A drive issue - the drive boots other cd's just fine, I've tested both an XP and the ultimate boot disk for windows... they are booting fine. A drive conflict - I have unplugged the only hard drive, leaving the DVD drive alone, still no recognition. I've tried both Ubuntu 12 and an older Ubuntu 10 CD, it refuses to recognize either one. It's like my computer has decided it will have nothing to do with Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• What would most games benefit from having?

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

Also, is it considered bad practice if your code logic requires a mixture of supered and non-supered methods like the Javascript example below?   It's been only several years since I migrated from Visual Source Safe to SVN. And SVN for me is still kinda "WOW! I can do so many things! SVN is so cool!" But many people around me keep saying "SVN? Really? Meh..." And there's so many of them that I'm worried. Should I move my team to Git / Mercurial or some other fancy thing? I know I sound ridiculous and the obvious answer would be "stay with what works for YOU". SVN does work for me... But every time I create a new project in my repository I keep asking myself - may be this was the time to move? So... Is SVN really that bad? Do I miss a huge opportunity by sticking with it?

• Wireless USB Adapter driver configuration

  First I would like agree one thing that this is fully for Ubuntu, not for BackTrack. However I'm posting my BackTrack question here since I find similar problems in backtrack forum are being unanswered and Linux/Unix site of StackExchange has very low attraction. I'm having USB wifi adapter (iBall Baton), having chipset RTL8191SU. It displays available wifi networks in Wicd manager. But while trying to connect it gives me bad password. When I'm trying to run airmon-ng it didn't returned me the monitor mode. I tried to replace with Ubuntu 12.10 drivers. But it totally nulled the device functionality. However I restored the drivers. I'm interested to compile drivers as if anyone indicate the methods. Awaiting ideas!

• Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

  I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU.   My team follows the Scrum development cycle. We have received feedback that our unit testing coverage is not very good. A team member is suggesting the addition of an external testing team to assist the core team, but I feel this will backfire in a bad way. I am thinking of suggesting pair programming approach. I have a feeling that this should help the code be more "test-worthy" and soon the team can move to test driven development! What are the potential problems that might arise out of pair programming??

But disk health is ok(according to smart tools). I can not change my HDD right now. So decide to reduce disk operation. Now I think forwarding Equals to Equals is okay, for obvious reasons, but for the life me I can't remember why I thought it wasn't before. Any thoughts?

• Desktop interface crashes after software updates

  Recently, after installing Ubuntu software updates on the evening of December 7th, 2012, my desktop interface crashes regularly leaving me with a command line screen with a long string of automated commands showing (I assume what goes on behind the pretty desktop). At first, I thought it was only crashing whenever I played DirectX games in WINE, but now it crashes if I open the native Firefox browser or if it's doing nothing at all but sitting there. Apport attempts to report the bugs after restart, but often they crash as well. I've done a SMART check on the hard drive, and everything report OK. No read errors, no bad sectors. • large product image structured data and visibility

  On an eCommerce site we two images for a product. One medium sized shown on top of the page and one large photo shown on click in an overlay. We use http://schema.org/Product microdata on the page. We'd like the large, initially hidden, photo to be the main image for the product, as it's the better looking one. So it's also referenced in the XML sitemap as <image:image>. So we also put the itemprop"image" attribute on the, hidden large image. But i'm wondering is it a bad idea to use a microdata attribute on a hidden style="display:none;" element? is there a better way to embed the main image in terms of SEO, without showing it initially?

  This is my application. It is created with quickly. I would like to package it for Ubuntu now. I tried to package it with uickly, but that failed. At first, I was trying to install it using setup.py. But it is only copied in python lib dir, no icon, no desktop file installed. Then I tried to follow this guide, but I ended up with package without icon and it was of bad quality, but most important of all, it does not use setup.py, and it was pretty complicated. I would like to automate packaging process Can someone point me in the right direction, some examples of existing apps that have automated packaging etc? Thanks in advance.

• Rendering problems with Java LWJGL

  I'm new to rendering and so I don't know if I can speed up the code or that what I'm doing is bad. This is what it looks like But, if I have say 100-200 triangles everything is fine. Yet, when I get to 400 triangles it becomes very laggy. At 1,000 triangles it becomes 5fps at max. Also, when I try to close it everything becomes extremely laggy and the game breaks my computer. • Issues with Dz77BH-55K Motherboard and i7 processor on 12.04

  I just built a computer with Intel's DZ77BH-55K motherboard with i7-3770 processor. On 12.04, 11.10, and 11.04 and Linux Mint 12, the computer has been really laggy. The graphics aren't working (choppy effects, bad resolution) and the keyboard and mouse inputs are even laggy and unreliable (skips keystrokes). I'm not sure what the problem is or what I can do to fix it. I tried sudo apt-get install mesa-utils but nothing changed. I've also messed around in the BIOS but no luck there either. Any ideas? Could it possibly be a hardware issue?

• Ubuntu 14.04 VLC Subtitles - Will not attach (unable to drag/drop or upload while viewing)

  I'm new to Ubuntu and a long time user of VLC with the Windows OS. In Windows, I was able to drag and drop the .sfv file onto the playing video and the subtitles would be enabled. In Ubuntu I try to drag and drop the .sfv file and it acts as though the .sfv file is a video and stops the actual video from playing. When I try to attach the .sfv file (view - subtitles - select text subtitles) I'm able to see the .sfv file I'd like to attach/open, although once I click open the file doesn't attach itself to the video. Does anyone know how to help me with this situation? I'm 2 seasons deep into Breaking Bad and attempting to read the body language of the characters during the Spanish parts has gone on way too long. • Panda 4: Reducing #indexed pages. How much is enough?

  I've been hit by panda 4 (40% decrease). I didn't see any change during panda 1-3. From what I've read it and when compared to my site, the change is probably due to the fact that I have over 30M pages indexed on Google, and they've starting seeing that as some sort of bad indication. Although I feel all of the pages have a unique value that Google should crawl, it seems I should make some tough calls and deduce the indexed pages according to some prioritization I will conduct. The question is what should be my target, or what factors should help me figure out a relevant target. How many pages should I try to reduce to? - 25M - 15M - 1M - 2000 Is it enough to add noindex to low priority pages or should I also remove all internal linking to them?

• Which specific practices could be called "software craftsmanship" rather than "software engineering"?

  Although not a new idea there seems to have been a big increase in the interest in software craftsmanship over the last couple of years (notably the often recommended book Clean Code's full title is Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship). Personally I see software craftsmanship as good software engineering with an added interest in ensuring that the end result is a joy to work with (both as an end user and as someone maintaining that software) - and also that its focus is more at the coding level of things than the higher level process things. To draw an analogy - there were lots of buildings constructed in the 50s and 60s in a very modern style which took very little account of the people who would be living in them or how those buildings would age over time. Many of those buildings rapidly developed into slums or have been demolished long before their expected lifespans. I'm sure most developers with a few years under their belts will have experienced similar codebases. What are the specific things that a software craftsman might do that a software engineer (possibly a bad one) might not?

• failure to restore backup from deja dup

  I had ubuntu 12.04.1 and I made a backup with deja dup of the home folder in an external hard disk. Today I installed ubuntu 14.4 and erased the ubuntu 12.04.1. Now I'm trying to restore my back up. First it ask where is the back up to restore, then it ask of what date to restore, and then it starts, after a wile ask for the password. I put the password and it says Restoring and stays in preparing with out any advancement. Don't show any error, just stays preparing. The window of details is in white. I had all my documents... it's very bad for me, all my personal data... lost? Thanks for any help, Layla.

• Adding unit tests to a legacy, plain C project

  The title says it all. My company is reusing a legacy firmware project for a microcontroller device, written completely in plain C. There are parts which are obviously wrong and need changing, and coming from a C#/TDD background I don't like the idea of randomly refactoring stuff with no tests to assure us that functionality remains unchanged. Also, I've seen that hard to find bugs were introduced in many occasions through slightest changes (which is something which I believe would be fixed if regression testing was used). A lot of care needs to be taken to avoid these mistakes: it's hard to track a bunch of globals around the code. To summarize: How do you add unit tests to existing tightly coupled code before refactoring? What tools do you recommend? (less important, but still nice to know) I am not directly involved in writing this code (my responsibility is an app which will interact with the device in various ways), but it would be bad if good programming principles were left behind if there was a chance they could be used.

Also which skills from OS, IDE, util is suitably to have in CV. I would’t have a 10 pages CV or have bad and immense structure of CV. Sory for my english
