• Creating a blog for software changes

  I work for a small company where I maintain a number of project all at once. I would like to create a blog and note software changes/update so that I can keep track of things. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. I am not an expert on it though. I use three different development environment. 1. Visual Studio 2. Eclipse 3. SQL Server Management Studio

• "PHP: Good Parts"-ish book / reference

  Before I had my first proper contact with Javascript I read an excellent book "Javascript: The Good Parts" by Douglas Crockford. I was hoping for something similar in case of PHP. My first thought was this book: "PHP: The Good Parts" from O'Reilly However after I read the reviews it seems it totally misses the point. I am looking for a resource that would: concentrate on known shortcommings of PHP, give concrete examples, be as exhaustive as possible I already see that things can go wrong. If you want to close this question: Please consider this, I looked through SO, and Programmers for materials. I obviously found this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/90924/what-is-the-best-php-programming-book It's general, mine is specific. Moreover I'm reading the top recommendation "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice" right now. I find it insufficient -- it doesn't address the bad practices as much as I would like it to. tl;dr My question is NOT a general PHP book request.

• Constructive criticism for my bounce rate being so high [closed]

  The bounce rate on my website's product pages is 80%, which is terrible. Could you offer any opinions on whether you consider the user experience to be bad, and how I could possibly improve it? Other pages, such as the home and category pages, have acceptable bounce rates, but the vast majority of my traffic lands on the product pages. I already tried removing some Google ads for a couple of days, but this didn't seem to help at all. I'm working on doing A/B testing at the moment. (It's tricky, as the site is based on a CMS - I custom coded the [Joomla] component, so hopefully I can get this testing working.)

• Impressions and traffic dropped by 70 %

  Can anyone advise why my impressions dropped and traffic as well? I used to have very generic keywords such as: anti aging, anti wrinkle, face cream, eye cream. I thought they were bad and made the keywords more specific: anti wrinkle eye cream, anti aging face cream, etc. Following that change, my impressions and traffic dropped dramatically! I used to get 45+ visitors a day, now I get 15- visitors a day. What is the way forward? I thought what I did to the keywords was good?

• How to change address and name of the computer in linux Ubuntu

  I have troubles again after upgrading Linux to version 12.04 - When I try to update progams and files with "apt-get update" it says something like there is no address added to your computer name. So my hostname has name "Marco" and my hosts file has line "127.0.0.1 Marco" So where is problem? Where should I change my name to get it right for updates? Thank you. Before on version 11.10 it was working fine. • Learning PHP OOP

  I have been coding PHP for about 2 years now and I THINK that I have a very good grasps of the fundamental parts of PHP, i.e. Functions foreach/IF statements sessions/cookies POST/GET Amongst a few others. I want to move on to learning OOP PHP now, so learning how to use classes and making it a really valuable skill. I have 1 requirement, the source must be a respected source that doesn't teach developers bad habits. I have the book: PHP and MySQL Web Development However, as useful as that is I would like an online source. I would like to know from people with experience in OOP PHP, how and where did they learn OOP PHP. Obviously by doing, but I would really appreciate some great resources which help me along the way.

• How should I manage a team with different skill levels?

  I'll be working on a software project with some friends of mine, and I've been appointed technical lead. None of these guys is a bad programmer at all, but I do have significantly more experience than them. I need to be able to distribute the work among everyone on the team, while also making sure that we don't tread on one another's toes; that they meet the relatively high standards of quality and scalability that we need to make this project successful, without requiring me to review everything they commit. How should I maintain standards while avoiding micromanagement? Is it enough to make some diagrams, schedule some code reviews, and trust that I'll be able to fix anything that they might break, or should I go the TDD route and write explicit tests for the team to satisfy?

• MAAS. Adding nodes

  Can anybody help me with MAAS installation? I installed it on 1 of my computers, configured DHCP server and now 3 PCs are in their own private network. I tried to add node via PXE image, but "Can not apply stage final, no datasource found! Likely bad things to come!" error comes after giving me option to log in. Then I tried to add node via web interface, but after adding it node's status is always "commisioning". So what should I do know? Any help is appreciated. Thank you P.S. English is not my native language, sorry for any type of errors.

• Are there any useless language features in the C or C++ language? [closed]

  As a beginner I often found myself saying "This is so useless. How can this ever help me?" only to find out later on that it is essential and I was a fool. The moral, however, tends to be that the C or the C++ language are perfect and they contain nothing of no-use to programmers. I'm asking this question for 2 reasons: out of pure curiosity and so that I may know what not to learn. In a nutshell - are there any useless language features in the C or the C++ language, which good programmers almost never use? It would also be of great help if you would mention weather they are a bad practice when used or just purely useless.

  Which of these is better for maintainability? if (byteArrayVariable != null) if (byteArrayVariable .Length != 0) //Do something with byteArrayVariable OR if ((byteArrayVariable != null) && (byteArrayVariable.Length != 0)) //Do something with byteArrayVariable I prefer reading and writing the second, but I recall reading in code complete that doing things like that is bad for maintainability. This is because you are relying on the language to not evaluate the second part of the if if the first part is false and not all languages do that. (The second part will throw an exception if evaluated with a null byteArrayVariable.) I don't know if that is really something to worry about or not, and I would like general feedback on the question. Thanks.

• weblogs.asp.net no longer usable as a blogging platform?

  I get swamped by spam on my weblogs.asp.net weblog. Both comments spam and spam through the contact form. It is getting so bad that I think the platform is becoming useless for me. Why o why are we bloggers from the first hour still in stone age without any protection against spam. Implementing Captcha shouldn’t be that hard… As far as I know this is the same blogging platform used by blogs.msdn.com. Aren’t all Microsoft bloggers getting sick from spam? In the past I tried to contact the maintainers of weblogs.asp.net, but never got a response. Who maintains the platform? Why are we still running on a Community Server Edition of 2007? Please help me out, or I’m out of here.

• Would google consider this a "link scheme"?

  I work for a County Government. In an effort to improve our search engine rankings I was considering contacting some of the other Counties in my state and seeing if we could setup an arrangement where we link to them and they link to us. It seems like a reasonable thing to have a "Other Counties" page with various links on a County website, but it also seems like it's bordering on a link scheme according to Google. When I read Google's article about link schemes it seems like we hit some of the right reasons for having links on another County's site but also some of the wrong. Does anyone have any insight into whether this is a good or bad idea?

• ejabberd won't look at my host_config option

  I'm new with ejabberd. What I want is to have a host myhost.domain.com which has an ldap authentication method. This all works fine if i modify the global options in AUTHENTICATION section in my ejabberd.cfg file. I am able to create two clients( defined in my LDAP directory ), and comunicate between them. Like i said, this works fine. But by aplying this authentication method globaly, it means that every hostname that i declare must use that. So i'm looking at {host_config, "myhost.domain.com" ...} But somehow i can't get ejabberd to look at that configuration, it just skips it. If i declare it like: {xhost_config, ...}, than in my ejabberd.log file i get a bad return error( so it knows that the configuration is there, but it won't look at it). Any suggestions? Thanks.

• Implementation of instance testing in Java, C++, C#

  For curiosity purposes as well as understanding what they entail in a program, I'm curious as to how instance testing (instanceof/is/using dynamic_cast in c++) works. I've tried to google it (particularly for java) but the only pages that come up are tutorials on how to use the operator. How do the implementations vary across those langauges? How do they treat classes with identical signatures? Also, it's been drilled into my head that using instance testing is a mark of bad design. Why exactly is this? When is that applicable, instanceof should still be used in methods like .equals() and such right? I was also thinking of this in the context of exception handling, again particularly in Java. When you have mutliple catch statements, how does that work? Is that instance testing or is it just resolved during compilation where each thrown exception would go to?

• Avoid Postfix Increment Operator

  I've read that I should avoid the postfix increment operator because of performance reasons (in certain cases). But doesn't this affect code readability? In my opinion: for(int i = 0; i < 42; i++); /* i will never equal 42! */ Looks better than: for(int i = 0; i < 42; ++i); /* i will never equal 42! */ But this is probably just out of habit. Admittedly, I haven't seen many use ++i. Is the performance that bad to sacrifice readability, in this case? Or am I just blind, and ++i is more readable than i++?

• What happened this type of naming convention?

  I have read so many docs about naming conventions, most recommending both Pascal and Camel naming conventions. Well, I agree to this, its ok. This might not be pleasing to some, but I am just trying to get you opinion why you name you objects and classes in a certain way. What happened to this type of naming conventions, or why are they bad? I want to name a struct, and i prefix it with struct. My reason, so that in IntelliSense, I see all the struct in one place, and anywhere I see the struct prefix, I know it's a struct: structPerson structPosition anothe example is the enum, although I may not prefix it with "enum", but maybe with "enm": enmFruits enmSex again my reason is so that in IntelliSense, I see all my enums in one place. Because, .NET has so many built in data structures, I think this helps me do less searching. Please I used .NET in this example, but I welcome language agnostic answers.

• I can't get suspend, hibernate and shutdown to work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently built a computer with these specs: Asus Motherboard, Intel i3 3.3 GHz dual processor, 8 GB of RAM. I installed 12.04 on a brand new hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive between root, home and swap like I have often read how to do. I cannot get this machine to properly shutdown. I have to hold the power button down now. Although, for the first few days it properly shutdown. I also cannot get the system to hibernate or suspend properly. I have read tons on this and watched many YouTube tutorials on how to fix both, but the computer never wakes up after suspend or hibernate. It just stays on a black screen. Can anyone help? I love 12.04 so far, but these setbacks are making me worried about stability and power management issues. Also, I wonder if it's really bad for the hard drive to force the CPU to shutdown.

• HTML Canvas: Should my app x, y values be global?

  I have a large file of functions. Each of these functions is responsible for drawing a particular part of the application. My app has x and y parameters that I use in the setup function to move the whole app around in order to try different placements. So, naturally, I need to use these x and y values to anchor each function's component rendering so that everything moves in unison if the global x,y values ever change. My question is, is it bad practice/architecture to have these x,y values in the global namespace and having the each function directly access them like so? function renderFace() { var x = App.x; var y = App.y; // drawing here } is there a better way i'm missing?

• Who does code coverage testing?

  Recently, I was given an opportunity to increase the code coverage in a project based on Java Swing, MySQL and other technologies. They told me to bring the code coverage to 100%, while it was only 45% at the time I joined. I am just starting, not a professional developer, right from the beginning I felt bad even though I write and understand computer programs well. (The developed code contains a lot of technical stuff like Generics and no documentation about the code is available.) Has anyone experienced the same situation before? • SH404SEF URLs in Joomla 1.5

  I have two modules to play with urls, the global configuration module and the sh404sef module. The global config is set to "Sef urls: YES" and "mod rewrite enabled: YES" and the sh404sef is set "url optimization: NO". My problem is, even with "Sef urls" set in the global config, my urls still don't seem to be that "user friendly" so I turn on the "Url optimization" using the sh404sef module, and I get better descriptive urls. However, the problem I inherit from doing this is that my dynamically populated chronoforms get messed up (only the chrono forms, other forms are fine); These forms are now showing up at the homepage instead of their own reserved page. Here's an example: Old form "GOOD" url: http://www.mycraftwork.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 New optimized "BAD" URL: http://www.mycraftwork.com/handthrown-pottery/alladin-teapot/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94 Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!   Is there any evidence that linking to external quality, reputable and popular websites helps with ranking (directly or indirectly)? Is there an established correlation? Some posts on the web do claim it, but without providing any evidence. It is known that if your website links to bad neighborhood, this will harm your reputation and authority, but does the reverse actually help? And, does it matter if the website is young or old in this case? Update I have found this Moz video revealing there is a 0.04 correlation with ranking.

I am a complete newbie to Linux, and I think the issue is that I am not running the application as root. How do I run applications as root in Ubuntu? Is it bad practice to do this? • Best practices of texture size

  I wanted to know how should I determine a good texture size ? Currently, I always create UV texture that are 1024x1024px but if I create for example, a big house with a 1024px texture size, it will looks pretty bad. So, should I create different texture size (512, 1024, ...) for different mesh size like this ? : or is it better to always do high-resolution texture and then reduce it in the software (ie : increase the LODBias settings in UDK reduce the size of the texture) ? • Aren't there compilers better at telling the programmer what's wrong in a code ?

  I have worked a little while with the Microsoft compiler from Visual C++ but I worked a long time with G++, and I remember often having bad times understanding what was wrong in my code with the former. Beside binary code generation and optimisation, I think this is a very important feature of a C++ compiler: giving the programmer a clue that makes him understand as fast as possible what is wrong with his/her code. I can understand some programmers understand programming as some sort of "competition" to make less errors, but to me that's a counter productive opinion. I once tried Clang compiler for C from the LLVM thingie, I didn't use it for a long time, but I was impressed on how explicit and easy to understand the error messages were. I am an Ubuntu newbie and I don't know much about updating symbolic-links... I searched the Internet, and found out about update-alternatives but was reluctant to use it... Please can someone help me in choosing 4.8 over 4.7 & also tell me is it bad to have 2 versions of same gcc?
