• Good way to parse query string

  I have a String that contains the following: ?workarea=London+&+Home+Counties+Ltd&sub=fs&&&FASh*5 which resembles a URI query string. What is the best way to parse the elements of this string (workarea and sub) without messing about with string manipulation? If I use HttpUtility.ParseQueryString is gets stuck as both elements include &. However if I encode the whole thing first I lose the seperations of the elements. Ideally the output would be: workarea = London & Home Counties Ltd sub = fs&&&FASh*5

• Detecting coincident subset of two coincident line segments

  This question is related to: How do I determine the intersection point of two lines in GDI+? (great explanation of algebra but no code) How do you detect where two line segments intersect? (accepted answer doesn't actually work) But note that an interesting sub-problem is completely glossed over in most solutions which just return null for the coincident case even though there are three sub-cases: coincident but do not overlap touching just points and coincident overlap/coincident line sub-segment For example we could design a C# function like this: public static PointF[] Intersection(PointF a1, PointF a2, PointF b1, PointF b2) where (a1,a2) is one line segment and (b1,b2) is another. This function would need to cover all the weird cases that most implementations or explanations gloss over. In order to account for the weirdness of coincident lines, the function could return an array of PointF's: zero result points (or null) if the lines are parallel or do not intersect (infinite lines intersect but line segments are disjoint, or lines are parallel) one result point (containing the intersection location) if they do intersect or if they are coincident at one point two result points (for the overlapping part of the line segments) if the two lines are coincident

  When running the following code, the filenames of all files below C:\Test are printed. Why doesn't it print just Hello (n times, depending on how many files are processed)? Does this imply that I cannot rely on shift to reliably assign to $_? Imagine a coworker implements the wtf function and doesn't know that it's called from a File::Find wanted sub.   I am a UI/UX designer and I would like to create kiosk type of app that would be a product catalog (help/suggestor) for customers in a retail store using a touch screen monitor (and computer). Something as simple as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoH0u6YTTK4 This is what I would like it to do: 1st Screen (Main Menu): Pick a type of category (For example: Dog, Cat, Small Animal) 2nd Screen pick a sub-category of a main category (For example: Puppy, Adult, Senior - DOG) 3rd Screen pick a sub-category of previous sub-category (For example: Food, Healthy, Toys) Then it will display a list of all products with a picture, small description, and price. Thats it. So the point of the kiosk is to help customers find certain products that match their pet criteria. (Dog Puppy Healthy Dog Food) I am wondering what is the best solution: RIA (Flex/Air or Silveright) or flash/action script. I am not sure what is the best technology to use for the following benefits: user-experience (smoothness of touch screen actions) and fast development.

  Hi all, I have been working on a shopping cart that the user can add/remove order items as they please and am returning an updated sub-total via a webservice using jQuery $.ajax Here is how I am calling the webservice and setting the sub-total with the response. //perform the ajax call $.ajax({ url: p, data: '{' + s + '}', success: function(sTotal) { //order was updated: set span to new sub-total $("#cartRow" + orderID).find(".subTotal").text(sTotal); }, failure: function() { //if the orer was not saved //console.log('Error: Order not deleted'); } }); The response I am getting seems perfectly fine: {"d":"128.00"} When I display the total on the page it displays as 128 rather than 128.00 I am fully sure it is something very simple and silly but I am so deep into it now I need someone with a fresh brain to help me out!! • Assembly Resolver ignores PrivateBinPath

  I have an assembly I would like to load from a sub-folder of the appbase. I set that sub-folder in the PrivateBinPath during AppDomain creation. The issue is that I have another version of the same DLL in the appbase. From the way it looks, the resolver detects the wrong version first, says that there is a mismatch and stops. As a result the correct version (located in the sub-folder) never gets loaded. I have tested this by removing those DLLs in the appbase and it fixed the problem. Is there any way to force the search even if the wrong version is found?

• How to normalize SVG path data (cross browser)?

  I have tried to find a way to implement cross browser path normalizer. There IS a native way which is described here and functional example is here, but it works only in newest Opera (but not in IE, FF, Safari, Chrome). The native way uses pathElm.normalizedPathSegList and it converts all relative coordinates to absolute ones and represents all path segment types as a following subset of types: M,L,C,z. I have found only one javascript code and jsfiddled functional example of it, but it works only in IE and FF. Chrome gives "Uncaught Error: INDEX_SIZE_ERR: DOM Exception 1". How this could be fixed to work also in Opera, Safari and Chrome or is there any other way for normalizing SVG paths?

I want the user to be able to hover over this div but when the user hovers out of the div (mouseout i think its called) I want it to hide. Imagine a dropdown menu in css, the user hovers over the link and the sub nav is shown, when the user hovers out or away from the link and sub nav the sub nav dissapears. The Sessions object is empty even if the code doesn't returned any error. Is my class Session to compex to be stored in a Dictionary?

When I make the values comma separated it throws an SQL error saying the sub query can return only one value. Is there anything else I can do to avoid running multiple sub queries?   I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()".   Trying to get my head around removing dataStore access from my entity classes. Lets say I have an AccountsGroup entity class. I put the all DBAccess into AccountsGroupRepository class. Now should I have a DeleteFromDB method in the AccountsGroup class, that will call the repository? Public Sub DeleteFromDB dim repository as new AccountsGroupRepository(me) repository.DelteFromDB End Sub Or should I just always use repositry whenever I need to delete an entity, and not have the CRUD methods in the entity class? What happens when there is some business logic validation that needs to be done before the delete can proceed. For example if AccountsGroup still has some Accounts in it the delete method should throw an exception. Where do I put that?

• Building an HTML5 App with ASP.NET

  I’m teaching several JavaScript and ASP.NET workshops over the next couple of months (thanks everyone!) and I thought it would be useful for my students to have a really easy to use JavaScript reference. I wanted a simple interactive JavaScript reference and I could not find one so I decided to put together one of my own. I decided to use the latest features of JavaScript, HTML5 and jQuery such as local storage, offline manifests, and jQuery templates. What could be more appropriate than building a JavaScript Reference with JavaScript? You can try out the application by visiting: http://Superexpert.com/JavaScriptReference Because the app takes advantage of several advanced features of HTML5, it won’t work with Internet Explorer 6 (but really, you should stop using that browser). I have tested it with IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5. You can download the source for the JavaScript Reference application at the end of this article. Superexpert JavaScript Reference Let me provide you with a brief walkthrough of the app. When you first open the application, you see the following lookup screen: As you type the name of something from the JavaScript language, matching results are displayed: You can click the details link for any entry to view details for an entry in a modal dialog: Alternatively, you can click on any of the tabs -- Objects, Functions, Properties, Statements, Operators, Comments, or Directives -- to filter results by type of syntax. For example, you might want to see a list of all JavaScript built-in objects: You can login to the application to make modification to the application: After you login, you can add, update, or delete entries in the reference database: HTML5 Local Storage The application takes advantage of HTML5 local storage to store all of the reference entries on the local browser. IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5 all support local storage. When you open the application for the first time, all of the reference entries are transferred to the browser. The data is stored persistently. Even if you shutdown your computer and return to the application many days later, the data does not need to be transferred again. Whenever you open the application, the app checks with the server to see if any of the entries have been updated on the server. If there have been updates, then only the updates are transferred to the browser and the updates are merged with the existing entries in local storage. After the reference database has been transferred to your browser once, only changes are transferred in the future. You get two benefits from using local storage. First, the application loads very fast and works very fast after the data has been loaded once. The application does not query the server whenever you filter or view entries. All of the data is persisted in the browser. Second, you can browse the JavaScript reference even when you are not connected to the Internet (when you are on the proverbial airplane). The JavaScript Reference works as an offline application for browsers that support offline applications (unfortunately, not IE). When using Google Chrome, you can easily view the contents of local storage by selecting Tools, Developer Tools (CTRL-SHIFT I) and selecting Storage, Local Storage: The JavaScript Reference app stores two items in local storage: entriesLastUpdated and entries. HTML5 Offline App For browsers that support HTML5 offline applications – Chrome 8 and Firefox 3.6 but not Internet Explorer – you do not need to be connected to the Internet to use the JavaScript Reference. The JavaScript Reference can execute entirely on your machine just like any other desktop application. If you click the Allow button then all of the files (generated ASPX, images, CSS, JavaScript) needed for the JavaScript Reference will be stored on your local computer. Automatic Script Minification and Combination All of the custom JavaScript files are combined and minified automatically whenever the application is built with Visual Studio. All of the custom scripts are contained in a folder named App_Scripts: When you perform a build, the combine.js and combine.debug.js files are generated. The Combine.config file contains the list of files that should be combined (importantly, it specifies the order in which the files should be combined). Here’s the contents of the Combine.config file:   <?xml version="1.0"?> <combine> <scripts> <file path="compat.js" /> <file path="storage.js" /> <file path="serverData.js" /> <file path="entriesHelper.js" /> <file path="authentication.js" /> <file path="default.js" /> </scripts> </combine>   jQuery and jQuery UI The JavaScript Reference application takes heavy advantage of jQuery and jQuery UI. In particular, the application uses jQuery templates to format and display the reference entries. Each of the separate templates is stored in a separate ASP.NET user control in a folder named Templates: The contents of the user controls (and therefore the templates) are combined in the default.aspx page: <!-- Templates --> <user:EntryTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EntryDetailsTemplate runat="server" /> <user:BrowsersTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EditEntryTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EntryDetailsCloudTemplate runat="server" /> When the default.aspx page is requested, all of the templates are retrieved in a single page. WCF Data Services The JavaScript Reference application uses WCF Data Services to retrieve and modify database data. The application exposes a server-side WCF Data Service named EntryService.svc that supports querying, adding, updating, and deleting entries. jQuery Ajax calls are made against the WCF Data Service to perform the database operations from the browser. The OData protocol makes this easy. Authentication is handled on the server with a ChangeInterceptor. Only authenticated users are allowed to update the JavaScript Reference entry database. JavaScript Unit Tests In order to build the JavaScript Reference application, I depended on JavaScript unit tests. I needed the unit tests, in particular, to write the JavaScript merge functions which merge entry change sets from the server with existing entries in browser local storage. In order for unit tests to be useful, they need to run fast. I ran my unit tests after each build. For this reason, I did not want to run the unit tests within the context of a browser. Instead, I ran the unit tests using server-side JavaScript (the Microsoft Script Control). The source code that you can download at the end of this blog entry includes a project named JavaScriptReference.UnitTests that contains all of the JavaScripts unit tests. JavaScript Integration Tests Because not every feature of an application can be tested by unit tests, the JavaScript Reference application also includes integration tests. I wrote the integration tests using Selenium RC in combination with ASP.NET Unit Tests. The Selenium tests run against all of the target browsers for the JavaScript Reference application: IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5. However, they provide test coverage for actual browsers. Furthermore, if you are using Visual Studio ALM, you can run the tests automatically every night as part of your standard nightly build. You can view the Selenium tests by opening the JavaScriptReference.QATests project. Summary I plan to write more detailed blog entries about this application over the next week. I want to discuss each of the features – HTML5 local storage, HTML5 offline apps, jQuery templates, automatic script combining and minification, JavaScript unit tests, Selenium tests -- in more detail. • Convert Excel File 'xls' to CSV, CAUTION: Bumps Ahead

  The task was to provide users with an interface where they can upload the 'csv' files, these files were to be processed and loaded to Database by a Console application. The code in Console application could not handle the 'xls' files so we thought, OK, lets convert 'xls' to 'csv' in the code, Seemed like fun. The idea was to convert it right after uploading within 'csv' file. As Microsoft does not recommend using the  Excel objects in ASP.NET, we decided to use the Jet engine to open xls. (Ace driver is used for xlsx) The code was pretty straight, can be found on following links: http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/yuanwang200409/102242008174401pm/1.aspx http://www.devasp.net/net/articles/display/141.html FIRST BUMP 'OleDbException (0x80004005): Unspecified error' ( Impersonation ): The ablove code ran fine in my test web site and test console application, but it gave an 'OleDbException (0x80004005): Unspecified error' in main web site, turns out imperonation was set to True and as soon as I changed it to False, it did work. on My XP box, web site was running under user                   'ASPNET'  with imperosnation set to FALSE                   'IUSR_*' i.e IIS guest user with impersonation set to TRUE The weired part was that both users had same rights on the folders I was saving files to and on Excel app in DCOM Config.  We decided to give it a try on Windows Server 2003 with web site set to windows authentication ( impersonation = true ) and yes it did work. SECOND BUMP 'External table not in correct format': I got this error with some files and it appeared that the file from client has some metadata issues  ( when I opened the file in Excel and try to save it ,excel  would give me this error saying File can not be saved in current format ) and the error was caused by that. Some people were able to reslove the error by using "Extended Properties=HTML Import;" in connection string. But it did not work for me. We decided to detour from here and use Excel object :( as we had no control on client setting the meta deta of Excel files. Before third bump there were a ouple of small thingies like 'Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005' Fix can be found at http://blog.crowe.co.nz/archive/2006/03/02/589.aspx THIRD BUMP ( Could not get rid of the EXCEL process  ):  I has all the code in place to 'Quiet' the excel, but, it just did not work. work around was done to Kill the process as we knew no other application on server was using EXCEL.  The normal steps to quite the excel application worked just fine in console application though.   FOURTH BUMP: Code worked with one file 1 on my machine and with the other file 2 code will break. and the same code will work perfectly fine with file 2 on some other machine . We moved it to QA  ( Windows Server 2003 )and worked with every file just perfect. But , then there was another problem: one user can upload it and second cant, permissions on folder and DCOM Conifg checked. Another Detour: Uplooad the xls as it is and convert in Console application.   Lesson Learnt:  If its 'xlsx' use 'ACE Driver' or read xml within excel as recommneded by MS.
