  • LAMP stack on home computer as a public web server

Here is my question though, This will enable me to program and test through localhost.   • What's the best way to completely remove everything from a computer, without re-installing?

    I have a friend who wants to sell their computer, but obviously all personal information and software that it is on it needs to be removed before doing so. Usually I would format and reinstall it, but I cannot easily get hold of the required XP DVDs and I'm not 100% sure the serial number is stuck on the case as usual so getting hold of it will probably require more effort than I'm prepared to spend. So, what's the best and quickest way to remove and uninstall everything from the PC without reinstalling it? Thanks. EDITS: I'm looking to remove things like Internet History and all installed programs, too. I know how to remove the history and each individual program, but that could take hours. The machine is not branded and therefore there is no website I can go to download recovery software. There is no recovery partition on the computer and I'm not aware of any recovery DVDs for it either. I can only assume it was installed from a retail copy, and therefore there is no way to recover it to factory settings. It needs to have XP installed, not any distribution of Linux. Like most average people, the person getting the computer will not understand what to do with a computer that doesn't have Windows installed, and software like Office does not work on Linux either. Buying another licence is not really an option either. She has just brought a laptop to replace the computer, so buying another licence for a computer that she's getting rid of doesn't really make sense. Thanks for all the help so far!

  • Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

    I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

    Spent some time searching, couldn't find exactly what I'm after. We like giving hands-on programming exercises as part of the interview process. The interviewee gets a laptop, with the editor and compiler of his choice. He or she then get a programming exercise and has about an hour to code it. Depending on the nature of the question, internet access is either allowed or forbidden. I'm looking for good general questions for a junior developer. I don't care what language they choose to program in. C++ is as good as Python or Scheme, as long as (s)he can program in it (this rules out "can you write a correct copy-constructor" style questions). I just want to see how they code, if their code is self-documenting, if they write tests, check edge-cases, etc. What kind of questions would you ask?

I think that speeches or presentations from developers or even creators of programming languages which were or are heavily used at some point are particulary interesting. One of my favorite speeches was recommended to me by someone here on SO: The future of C# I also like Guido van Rossum's speeches but he sometimes seems pretty nervous. Another in my opinion good presentation would be the Google tech talk about Go.   • Using Excel To Read Access Without MS Access On Computer

    I have written code that joins two table in access, using criteria supplied from drop down lists in excel and then returns the data to a specific location on the spreadsheet (titles already on the sheet). This works fine on my box and others with MS Access on the machine, but the purpose of writing this was to give people (associates) that dont have the MS Access on their machines (which is most of them) to be able to do simple queries to the database. When we try to run this on a machine without MS Access, we are getting the error message "Compile Error: Cant find project or library." Since this works fine on any machine so far that has Access, but not the others I am wondering if this is not possible without the actual Access software. Any help or insight would be appreciated.     There are special kind of images called "duotone" which have just two channels. It is mostly used when you want to achive higher quality reproduction - have a printing press with two colors (black , gray). My question is, I have normal gray-scale image, how to convert it to duotone? I know I can tweak the curves in Photoshop - this is not what I'm asking, rather than how to do it programmatically? Perhaps there is a library which can do just that? What about "dot gain compensation"? "Total ink coverage"?

My question is, how do i create a ServiceHost on machine X, while the code is on machine Y? if i build and run this code on my dev machine(localhost) : servicehost = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService1)); servicehost.AddServiceEndpoint(typeof(IMyService1), new NetTcpBinding(),"net.tcp://my.datacenter.com/MyApp/MyService1"); //This is normally set to localhost. What implementation must be done on the datacenter server, so that if i had to point to http://my.datacenter.com/MyApp/MyService1 , it will route the service operation to my dev machine (localhost). However, the datacenter should not be accessible via the internet. It is a possible infrastructure that we researching to see if we can create a service bus type architecture so that all our customers can invoke other customer services running on their respective machines just by calling our datacenter url. We have looked at Windows Azure, but we have our own datacenter infrasture that we wish to leverage off. Come think of it, we kind of building our own Azure, on a very very basic scale.   • Ubuntu stopped recognizing my iPod

    Rythmbox on Ubuntu 10.10 used to recognize my 3rd gen Nano and transfer mp3s. Now I plug it in and Ubuntu doesn't pop-up that box that asks what you want to do anymore.   • Computer crashes if left unattended AND running uTorrent, what could be?

    I have a weird problem in which, if I leave my computer unattended, AND I leave uTorrent open, downloading/seeding, the computer simply crashes after about 20 / 30 minutes (don't know exactly since if I leave it, and come back later, it has already restarted or has a BSOD.) If I leave the computer alone for undefined time WITHOUT uTorrent, nothing happens, and if I am constantly using the computer while using uTorrent, no problem either (I could be using it all day with uT open and it doesn't crash). So what could it be that the combination of those cases makes the computer crash? I have already checked the power management so the computer never enters stand by mode, sleep, hibernate, etc. (the only thing I do is turn off the display). A first guess is that maybe one of my external hard drives DO sleep or enters in a "low power" mode or something if I don't use the PC. but since uT is running MAYBE tries to use that drive, and makes it crash. Could that be possible? How to know for sure if the external drive does that, and to prevent it from doing so. Any more ideas of what may be causing that? Specs: Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, 2 GB RAM. Latest version of uTorrent (although it has been happening for a while now). UPDATE: i just found out that uTorrent has Disk cache options ( preferences - advanced - disk cache ). I have no idea if that may be causing problems with my external drive, hence causing the crash.

I recently got an i7 with windows 7 and love it, and this is what I am using to do development on currently. I would love to try out writing a simple App on a mac for either an iPhone or iPad. The question I had was are there any developers using a macbook to do windows based programming as well as writing apps? And what is their setups like?   • Building 64bit Qt on 32bit Xp computer

    I'm trying to build Qt in a shared 64 bit mode on my 32bit XP system. I can configure the QMake and start the 64bit build. The problem is that when the build starts, the first thing that happens in that the process builds ui, moc and rcc utility compilers in 64 bit mode, then tries to run them on my 32bit machine. Does anyone know how to configure the build so that it does not build those compilers first?

  • Allocated Private Bytes keeps going up in one computer but not the other

    OK, this may sound weird, but here goes. There are 2 computers, A (Pentium D) and B (Quad Core) with almost the same amount of RAM. If I run the same code on both computers, the allocated private bytes in A never goes down resulting in a crash later on. In B it looks like the private bytes is constantly deallocated and everything looks fine. In both computers, the working set is deallocated and allocated similarly. Could this be an issue with manifests or DLLs (system)? I'm clueless. Note: I observed the utilized memory with Process Explorer.

    Good afternoon, I'm sorry that this isn't a programming question specifically, but stackoverflow has been great at answering questions in the past, so I thought I'd give it a shot. One of our Linux users attempted to install Cygwin on our Windows Server 2008 Domain Controller. Now it is no longer possible to browse the domain and see all of the computers. For example, \\my_domain_name will just bring up a username/password dialog box (that will not accept any username or password, even the domain administrator) and no computers will ever be listed. However, I can still connect to computers based on their name or IP address. So \\eridanus or \\192.168.1.85 still work to connect to the shared directories of computers on our network. Does anyone know where I can find these settings? and how I can fix this problem? Thanks, Giawa

  • How to receive a datastream from a device on your computer, in C#

    I plan to build a small audio-recorder app in C#. My laptop has a built in Microphone that's always active, so I want to use that as an early-stage test. I would simply start recording, save the file as a .wav or even use the LAME dll to make it into an MP3. The problem is, I don't know how to contact that microphone. Do I use a library that can detect a device, or do I just catch a stream of bytes from the port that the device is on? I don't have any experience with receiving data from connected devices. I suppose that I'll need to enter all the data into a byte array and then Serialize that into a WAV file, but I'm not sure. Can I get some pointers on this subject?
