  • Delay before booting with laptop

    I have almost the same problem as in Delay before booting? My computer is a practically new (couple months) Lenovo X200 Tablet (System Model 7449FXG). So when I press the power button, the indicator light that means "computer is on" turns on, but nothing else happens for about 5 mins, after that the computer starts booting normally. The same happens also on restart. And no USB or any other device for that matter is plugged in to the computer. And at the delay time the monitor is blank - actually not on at all.

    I recently tried to install Windows 8 RP 32-bit in Virtualbox using Ubuntu 12.04 as the host. I have tried multiple settings for memory, hard drive size, etc. Every single time it has come up with this error Your PC needs to restart. Please hold down the power button Error code: 0x0000005D Parameters: 0x0306170A, 0x756E6547, 0x49656E69, 0x6C65746E I really like windows 8 and I would like to know how to fix this some time soon.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 key arrow up is being pressed by itself

    Keyboard's up arrow key is keep pressing itself every few seconds. I tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 via boot cd, even before installation the arrow key was being pressed by itself. I tried to use Ubuntu first without installing it and then tried to install it from there, the issue seemed to be fixed. I was using the PC for months until out of the blue the issue came back. IT IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE! Thank you in advance.

    Through the normal processes I enter my shared music folder on my Windows computer, i.e.: Places Network Windows pc Music. After rebooting my Ubuntu laptop, however, this connection isn't automatically set again. My question: How do I get Ubuntu to automatically connect to that shared folder after login (while first checking whether the Windows computer is 'online')? This because I added the folder to the Banshee Library, and I currently first have to go to the shared folder manually before Banshee can play the files.

  • Is it possible to use the IE10 App without making Internet Explorer the default browser?

    Windows 8 comes with two versions of Internet Explorer: the normal desktop version, which looks just like IE9, and the Modern UI version, which is a full-screen tablet-style app. By default, links opened in desktop mode open in desktop IE, and links opened in Modern UI apps open in the full-screen app. When you set a new default browser (like Google Chrome, which has a Modern UI mode now), you can no longer access IE10 in the Modern UI at all - the tile disappears from the start screen, and there's no way to manually invoke it. I don't use IE10 much, but I'd like to have access to it in Metro mode, because it's handy for testing things out. I don't want to have IE be my default browser though. Is there any way to get the IE10 "App" to show up without setting IE to be the default browser everywhere?

  • I accidentally hid my Gnome Panel

    I got a new tablet pc, and in attempt to hide the empathy mail icon, accidentally made the entire panel dissappear. (The one at the top that has applications/places/system, and battery life/network connections etc). I don't believe I killed it, because alt+f2, then gnome-panel does not bring it back. I've tried alt+ctrl+backspace to reset gnome, that didn't bring it back. It must just be some setting like 'hide' or something... Any tips to get it back? Thanks.

  • Oracle ADF and Simplified UI Apps: I18n Feng Shui on Display

    I demoed the Hebrew language version of Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 live in Israel recently. The crowd was yet again wowed by the simplified UI (SUI). I’ve now spent some time playing around with most of the 23 language versions, or the NLS (Natural Language Support) versions as we’d call them, available in Release 8. Hebrew Oracle Sales Cloud Release 8 The simplified UI is built using 100% Oracle ADF. This framework is a great solution for developers to productively build tablet-first, mobility-driven apps for users who work and live using natural languages other than English. Oracle ADF’s internationalization (i18n) relies on built-in Java and Unicode,  packing in i18n goodness such as Bi-Di (or bi-directional) flipping of pages, locale-enabled resource bundles, date and time support, and so on. Comparing German (left) and Hebrew Bi-Di (right) page components in the simplified UI. Note the change in the direction of the arrows and positions of the text. So, developers who need to build global apps don’t have to do anything special when using Oracle ADF components, all thanks to the baked-in UX Feng Shui, as Grant Ronald of the ADF team would say to the UK Oracle User Group.   • How do I disable network connection at prelogin?

    --- This question is related to Ubuntu 12.10, since previous versions did not connect to network before login --- I had a bad boot today: the Ubuntu screen was blocked at startup time, after a green [OK] and a white blinking underscore. In recovery mode I figured out the problem: NetworkManager hung trying to connect to a wireless network that wasn't available anymore, and so I couldn't reach the prelogin level. Anyway: I really don't like that the pc connects to a network before the user logging in. How is it possible to disable it?

    I have an HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower from 2006: 80GB (3.5”) SATA 3.0GB/s with NCQ and Smart IV Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 I can install Ubuntu on it from a USB stick and everything seems to work fine, but when I finish and reboot the pc, grub will be shown but When I continue I get just a black screen with a blinking cursor I tried Linux Mint and OpenSuse as well but it seems there is something forbidden in the Bios. Installing Windows 8 works fine.

  • Mouse / Usb don't work

    I just start now with Xubuntu (11.10) and don't know why but my mouse work strage, so if i move my mouse it move like jump not fluid (but if i use my pad there aren't any problem). another really strange thing is if I take off the mouse (usb) and put back doesn't work anymore.also if i put pen drive nothing uppen, maybe it's some usb problem or something i don't know.   • Ubuntu 12.04 - Wakes from Suspend by itself

    This problem has only just started and I don't know what has changed to cause it. I suspend my ubuntu 12.04 PC and it used to stay asleep until I hit the enter key to wake it up but for the last week or so it's been waking itself up. I've checked the BIOS settings and all the Wake on Lan settings are Disabled. I've used the ethtool command and the wake on lan is set to "d" which I've read been off. Can anyone suggest anything?

  • Nautilus copies files but not directories from samba server on OS X

    I need to copy files from OS X on a Mac to Ubuntu on a PC. I enabled File Sharing on the Mac and selected the samba option. I was then able to connect to the samba server in Nautilus. Copying files was no problem, but copying directories failed, with the error message "is a directory". I can accomplish what I want using samba in the terminal. But it would be more conveninient to do this in Nautilus.

    I have just installed the standard default desktop configuration of Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal). My PC only has 1GB of RAM and is struggling a little. What steps can I take to reduce the memory overhead of the standard install? If it makes a difference, I use Firefox, and a terminal most of the time. Simply running those two applications I see: free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 938 873 64 0 5 167 -/+ buffers/cache: 701 237 Swap: 959 158 801

  • LAN connection suddenly domain_not_set.invalid

    I went to work today - internet fine as always. Came back, dreaded yellow triangle. I can connect wirelessly like i am now on my tablet. Thats completely fine. But through LAN I get the domain_not_set.Invalid message if I renew my IP for example. It seems I just don't have a DNS. But I have literally not touched anything no ones even been in the house. Hows that happen? Any help on why only wireless works would be great, I am gonna buy a wireless adapter tomorrow for the interim but I would like to know why. Thanks.
