• distance between two points across land using sql server

  I am looking to calculate the shortest distance between two points inside SQL Server 2008 taking into account land mass only. I have used the geography data type along with STDistance() to work out point x distance to point y as the crow flies, however this sometimes crosses the sea which i am trying to avoid. I have also created a polygon around the land mass boundary I am interested in. I believe that I need to combine these two methods to ensure that STDistance always remains within polygon - unless there is a simpler solution. Thanks for any advice

• Stack calling convention between .NET & C on WinCE 6.0

  Hi there. I'm porting a DLL written in C from WinCE 5.0 to WinCE 6.0 on an ARM target. This DLL is called by a .NET software. On WinCE5.0, everything runs fine. On WinCE6, I have the following problem: on InitInstance() of my DLL, I can call anything without problem (for example MessageBox()) or uses recursivity. Passed that point, the DLL is called by .NET code. And then it fails: even the arguments passed by .NET code seem weird. I can call MessageBox() once, but I can't call a function that calls MessageBox() and then that calls itself: recursivity is broken. It seems that the .NET code uses the stack in a different way than my C code. I'm very unfamillar with the Windows world and the company that gives me the .NET application does not understand yet why there is such a failure. Any pointer/hint/advice welcome! Thanks!

• Client Side Development - In Process/Completed Indicator Preferences?

  Hello, I have been doing more client-side development, managing the UI on the client and submitting data to the server via web service calls. I'm not looking for implementation details, but was curious on developer preferences for displaying an operation in process and what to display when completed or even failed. As a for instance, just for clarification sake, what if you are submitting a profile form's data to a web service. I want to display that something's happening to the user, and give them a message that the form submitted successfully. I've in the past used a twitter-style message (that appears at the top), modal dialogs... I was curious what worked for others and any advice (what did the users like/not like, etc.). Again, technical details aren't needed. Thanks.

  A few web searches yield all sorts of contradictory advice on linking from an iPhone app to an app on the store. • Eclipse takes ages to display breakpoint when running tomcat

  Hi, When tomcat hits a breakpoint in Eclipse, the execution thread stops, but the breakpoint takes absolutely ages to appear in Eclipse. The same is true if I try to inspect a variable; the first time takes about 2 minutes. After that, the debug session is fine. What with that and the CONSTANT need to keep re-publishing to tomcat every time I change something, it's driving me nuts. Does anybody have any ideas why it's so slow? Also, how can I stop tomcat restarting the webapp every time I try to change something during a debug session? I am sure it never used to do that... Eclipse is 3.3.1.1 with J2EE Standard Tools and Web Standard Tools. Tomcat is 5.5 Thanks a lot for any advice! Ryan

• paypal redirect on successful checkout

  I am trying to get my Paypal subscription to redirect to a custom page after a successful checkout. Before submitting to Paypal I overload the submit handler, run my own function (to store details) and return a unique id. I want to attach that id to my return URL. (as a GET or POST var so to speak) I have turned auto redirect "on" in my Paypal sandbox sellers preferences, but it only seems to re-direct to the URL that I HAVE to put in there. using the <input type="hidden" name="return" value="someurl" /> does no seem to work. I want it this way so that I can capture the user information when entered with a "non-paid" flag, then via the IPN I can update that record with a "PAID" flag, and I want to use the unique ID to tie it all together so to speak. Any advice or a different approach is welcomed. Many thanks!

• Getting website data into Adobe InDesign

  I'd like our magazine team to be able to download website data in a file that Adobe InDesign can read. They can then import/open the file, make a few tweaks, and cut out a vast deal of repetitive manual labour (they currently use copy&paste for a few hours). After a brief Google I note that v2 of InDesign can import/export XML so perhaps that is my best bet? Are there any alternatives, and can anyone offer any advice on them? I am using a PC, and the magazine team are on Macs; testing will be tiresome I fear. The data we wish to format is fairly simple - a title followed by a short chunk of text (repeated about 50 times, say). I'll ask about importing images later. Thanks for your help. I will return to Google now, but it would be great if anyone can point me in a more specific direction first!

• MooTools events not firing in IE8

• iPhone: UITableView Becomes Invisible after Changing the Data it Displays

  Hi I have application with a TabBar that controls several views. In one view, I control connections to different servers. Each server provides a different set of items. I display these items in UITableView on another view. The problem is that the tableview displays OK the first time but if I go back to view number one and change the server, thereby changing the list of items that should be displayed in tableview, the tableview becomes invisible for some reason. If I tap on the screen in the place where it should be, it becomes visible again. I create table view like this UITableView * aTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(X,Y,Width,Height) style:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [[self view] addSubview:aTableView]; aTableView.dataSource = self; Ive tried to call reloadData and setNeedsDisplay in viewWillAppear of the UIViewController that hosts this tableview but without success. • Using SQLLite transactions I/O Error

  I currently have a client / server setup where the client sends data to the server and then the server saves the data to a SQLite database file. To do this I am using transactions which works fine in windows 7 when I run around 30 clients (each client sending data back between 5 - 30 seconds). When using the same software in Windows XP, I can get/set data multiple times with no problems until I run around 20 clients I start to get Windows Delayed wrote failed errors: This fires an exception on the server: I'm assuming this is either something to do with XP or a hardware issue on the machine i'm running XP. Does anyone have any advice to avoid this? Or if I should just catch the exception and retry saving the data? Thanks

  Hi All, I'm using LinFu's dynamic proxy to add some advice to some classes. The problem is that the proxied objects can only intercept virtual methods and will return the return type's default value for non-virtual methods. I can tell whether a class is proxied or not based whether the class or any of it's method has an interception attribute, e.g. [Transaction] Is it possible to write a ReSharper 5 structural search that would warn if any non-virtual public methods are defined on a class with an interception attribute. E.g. Ok public class InterceptedClass { [Transaction] public virtual void TransactionalMethod() { ... } public virtual void AnotherMethod() { ... } } Bad public class InterceptedClass { [Transaction] public virtual void TransactionalMethod() { ... } public void AnotherMethod() // non-virtual method will not be called by proxy { ... } } Many Thanks.

However if I add the @Stateful annotation to the bean so it becomes @Stateful @Scope(ScopeType.SESSION) @Name("chuckNorrisBean") public class ChuckNorrisBean implements Serializable, ChuckNorris and the page will load with exceptions complainig about Exception during request processing:Caused by javax.servlet.ServletException with message: "#{chuckNorrisBean.roundHouseKick}: javax.el.MethodNotFoundException: //localhost/universe/earth.xhtml @41,65 action= "#{chuckNorrisBean.roundHouseKick}": Method not found: ChuckNorrisBean:a6gkg-w6das4-g8wmgh0y-1-g8woy0wo-4b.roundHouseKick()" Any advice on what might've went wrong with my chuckNorrisBean? • PHP script to replace cgi script

  Hey, I have a CGI script that uses an old database driver that is no longer supported. Instead of struggling with this old cgi script, I thought it would be easier to rewrite it in php. It works now as a php script, but I need it to be served from the same web address. When a user accesses http://somesite.com/myscript.cgi, I want it to run the php script. I tried just renaming the php script with .cgi, but that didn't work. This is on an Apache server hosted by Dreamhost. Any advice? Bridger Maxwell

• console windows not close after stopping program

  Hello, Visual Studio 2005 C++ Windows XP Pro I have a sample application that I am testing, that links with boost libraries. However, the program runs ok. However, when I try and stop the program by clicking the 'Stop Debugging' button. The program ends, but the console window remains open. So I have many of them, as during my testing I am starting and stopping the application. Even when I try and close it by clicking the close button it has no affect. And it doesn't seem to appear under task manager when the program ends. The only way I can close them if I reboot windows. I am thinking it might be a thread that has not closed, and maybe that is keeping the console windows open. Many thanks for any advice,

  Experts - I need some advice in the following scenario. I have a configuration file with a list of tasks. Each task can have zero, one or more dependencies. I wanted to execute these tasks in parallel [right now they are being executed sequentially] The idea is to have a main program to read the configuration file and load all the tasks. Read individual tasks and give it to an executor [callable] that will perform the task and return results in a Future. When the task is submitted to the executor (thread) it will monitor for its dependencies to finish first and perform its own task. Is this the right approach? Are there any other better approaches using java 1.5 features?

• How do I setup a Master Page with ASP.net?

  Hi there, I'm normally a ColdFusion developer, but I'm having to work on a new site using some ASP.net hosting only, so forgive me if my questions seem very trivial. For numerous reasons, the website will be relatively static in the sense that it will mainly be using includes etc...that's about as complex as it will get with this. Now, I heard about the ability to set a master in ASP.net. Would anyone please be able to explain to me in a step process on how to do this? I have of course been searching for some time now on this topic but most results yield little help or no help at all since the search terms are slightly ambiguous. • NSPredicates with custom objects

  Hi, I have the following problem and I cannot figure out how to solve it. I have an NSSet which contains Person objects (NSDictionary with 2 keys: name, age). From time to time I get an NSArray of Person objects and I want to add them to my NSSet but I want to filter out the duplicates. I'm thinking I could use NSPredicates but I am reading the documentation and I can't understand how should I format my NSPredicate to filter out my array content based on what I already have in NSSet. So I have an NSSet with 5 custom objects and I get an NSArray with 6 objects but 3 of them already exist in NSSet and I want to filter them out. I understand what I should do with basic objects like Strings, integers, etc but I don't know how to extend this to work with custom more complex objects. I hope I was clear enough with my problem. Any starting point, example or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

• Problem With HTML5 Application Cache Whitelist - Won't Ignore Items

  I'm trying to use HTML5 Application Cache to speed some things up on an iPhone webapp. It works great for storing images, css and JS, but the problem is that it also tries to store the HTML. I haven't been able to get it to ignore the html and stop storing it in the cache. From what I've read, I have to "whitelist" the files and directories that I want to load no matter what. I've tried listing the files I want cached explicitly, and I've tried adding a series of things under the "NETWORK:" heading. I've tried * / /* http://mysite.com http://mysite.com/ http://mysite.com/* None of them seem to work. Is there any way to ignore HTML files by MIME-Type or anything? Any advice would be appreciated. • Using LaTeX, how can I have a list of references at the end of each section?

  I want to generate the bibliography for each section, and have it at the end of the section. When I do this at the moment it generates the full bibliography and places it after each section. Is there a way that this can be done? The advice here says "The chapterbib package provides an option sectionbib that puts the bibliography in a \section* instead of \chapter*, something that makes sense if there is a bibliography in each chapter. This option will not work when natbib is also loaded; instead, add the option to natbib. " I don't understand what this means, and I've tried experimenting with what I thought the options are. Specifically, what does "add the option to natbib" mean? Thank you for your help.

• Profiling statements inside a User-Defined Function

  I'm trying to use SQL Server Profiler (2005) to track down some application performance problems. One of the calls being made is to a table-valued user-defined function. This function wraps a select that joins several tables together. In SQL Server Profiler, the call to the UDF is logged. However, the select that underlies the UDF isn't being logged at all. Because of this, I'm not getting useful data on which tables & indexes are being hit. I'd like to feed this info into the Database Tuning Advisor for some indexing advice. Is there any way (short of unwrapping the queries themselves) to log the tables called by UDFs in Profiler?

  Hey all, I'm not much of a database guru so I would like some advice. Background We have 4 tables that are currently stored in Sybase IQ. We don't currently have any choice over this, we're basically stuck with what someone else decided for us. Sybase IQ is a column-oriented database that is perfect for a data warehouse. Unfortunately, my project needs to do a lot of transactional updating (we're more of an operational database) so I'm looking for more mainstream alternatives. Question Given these tables' dimensions, would anyone consider SQL Server or Oracle to be a viable alternative? Table 1 : 172 columns * 32 million rows Table 2 : 453 columns * 7 million rows Table 3 : 112 columns * 13 million rows Table 4 : 147 columns * 2.5 million rows Given the size of data what are the things I should be concerned about in terms of database choice, server configuration, memory, platform, etc.?

  I'd like to offer a news-feed like feature for users of our website. When the user logs in, he is shown a list of the latest updates across various areas of the site. I'm afraid that this is going to be difficult to scale. What are some networking / database topologies that can support a scalable infrastructure without having lots of copies of the same data?   I've recently started to use SQLite and began to integrate it into a C# project I'm working on. However, randomly my project will throw the exception: Input array is longer than the number of columns in this table I'm having a hard time trying the trace the problem because it seems to be thrown on a random basis. • Why won't asp.net create cookies in localhost?

  Okay, this is really kinda starting to bug me. I have a simple Web project setup located at: "C:\Projects\MyTestProject\". In IIS on my machine, I have mapped a virtual directory to this location so I can run my sites locally (I understand I can run it from Visual Studio, I like this method better). I have named this virtual directory "mtp" and I access it via http://localhost/mtp/index.aspx. All this is working fine. However, whenever I try to create a cookie, it simply never gets written out? I've tried this in FF3 and IE7 and it just plain won't write the cookie out. I don't get it. I do have "127.0.0.1 localhost" in my hosts file, I can't really think of anything else I can do.
