• How to force a remap of sectors reported in S.M.A.R.T C5 (Current Pending Sector Count)?

  The S.M.A.R.T C5 value of my Samsung HM640JJ Hard Drive (in an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop) is "yellow status = caution" C5 was 10 yesterday, and it's 21 today. C4 (Reallocation Event Count) = 0 and 05 (Reallocated Sectors Count) = 0 How can I force the firmware to reallocate them? I removed the partitions, recreated them again and formatted the entire drive. I ran chkdsk /r /f I ran the BIOS disk check utility and other diagnose/repair tools

• Playing games over RDP and utilizing other res of powerfull PC... [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is it possible to run games over remote desktop? Hey guys, I have the one question..that may be not usual but very interesting.. Well, I have laptop and some powerfull PC, now I want to utilize ALL energy of the powerfull PC on my notebook.. for example, run games like F.E.A.R on powefull PC and next play it over the Remote Desktop on my laptop.. both PC may be connected lan < lan, or thru Wi-Fi, or FireWare, or (?) any other way that does not matter.. Google told me that it won't work over RDP due to protocol lacks and there should be many bump on the road on that way.. but, maybe , you guys will give me the right point ? Let's formalzie.. we'd like to utilize all resources of one PC on another PC via network, how we should do that ? Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 10.4 No internet

  I have Ubuntu 10.4 dual booted with Windows Vista on a work Lenovo R61 laptop. The home and work wireless connection were working fine. I lost all internet connection at work. The IT guy clearly knew nothing about Linux. Since he 'fixed' it get nothing, no wlan signal the Network manager icon was gone, no internet. I still have the live disc and if I run from the live disc the connections are there and everything works perfectly. How do I restore the internet easily on my laptop. I have been using Linux for 3 Years but I am still a bit of a newbie, this is the first major problem I've had in three years. It's driving me nuts. Thanks

• How do I set my main monitor to a higher resolution?

  My laptop monitor's native resolution is 1280x800 and it just isnt big enough for me. I tried to set the resolution higher, but my graphics card only showed options upto 1280x800, and I figured that was the max res my card would allow. I found a monitor out on the street a few days ago and its native resolution is 1024x768. I have been playing around with it a bit. I was looking under the resolutions for it, and I can set it upto 1400x1050, so apparently my card allows for more than 1280x800, so why can't I set my laptop monitor to higher?

  I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

• Should we install the OS on an SSD or not when running virtual machines?

  I have a new Dell Mobile Precision M6500 laptop with 8 GB RAM. it has two hard drives - 500 GB @7200 RPM and a 128 GB SSD. The main purpose of these laptop is software development in virtual machines. The plan is to install the base OS (Windows 7) and all the programs in the 500 GB drive, and let the SSD only contain the virtual machine images. It is my understanding that the we get most performance from the virtual machines if the images are on a separate hard drive than the base OS. Is this the way to go, or should I install the OS on the SSD as well? What are the pros and cons? The virtual machine images would be between 20 - 30 GB, and I might run 1 or 2 at a time.

  In windows7 how do I request a new dhcp lease ? What I need in the equivalent of the button "repair" on windows XP. The button "diagnose" seems to do a few things but not request a new dhcp lease if one is already available. Disabling and re-enabling the card does the trick but messes up any program capturing traffic on the interface.

• Windows 7 stopped booting

  I have a laptop which after shutdown it stopped booting. I tried repair, safe mode, and even start with Windows 7 Installation. The screen just goes blank with a mouse pointer that I can move around. I removed the harddrive from the laptop and connected it to my desktop using an External HD casing. The computer recognizes the disk, but it seems like it can't read it. If I go to My Computer it shows up, but it doesn't display usage information. When I double click on the drive it sits there as if it was loading something and eventually shows "G:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Disk Management and Diskpart also take forever to load and when it does it shows the drive. My question, do you think this is a hardware problem or some corrupted sector? How can I try to fix the drive without formatting it? Thanks...

  I accidentally deleted all my windows 7 drive partitions while installing Ubuntu in my laptop.On booting into ubuntu it is showing 450gb NTFs file partition.30 GB drive linux file system partition. so when i was reinstalling my Os with windows 7.i am not able to view my drives.it is showing drivers not found.I have searched the google followed the steps mentioned in this link. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/d460efd3-eac4-4ef8-b95f-b8208b24f44f my laptop is i3 machine and i changed sata to ACHI.still it is showing same error. • Move a window back into the visible area in Xubuntu?

  I have this annoying little problem on my laptop that sometimes after I have used a external monitor (with higher resolution) some applications place them self outside the visible area of my desktop. So the question is how do I move them back into the visible area? (Please note, no part of the window is visible so I can't use the mouse.) Is there some app that can give me focus to move a application to the mouse pointer or something like that? Please note that I'm running Xubuntu (XFCE) on this laptop. Thanks

• Windows Task Scheduler won't let me uncheck "Wake the computer" option for a backup task

  I have a problem with my windows 7 laptop automatically waking after I put it to sleep and then I find it later with the battery drained. I tracked down the culprit using the "powercfg -lastwake" command to be a Backup task in the "Windows Server" section of the task scheduler. I have tried unchecking the "Wake the computer to run this task" checkbox for this task, but after I do this and reboot, the box is always rechecked again. How can I make this setting persist? I have full admin rights to this laptop, but it is on a domain. Edit: I looked into the domain policy settings as suggested by Dave below and did not find any policies related to scheduled task settings. Any other ideas?

• Shared folder on mac: mounted on ubuntu but not writable

  I've got a mac (called 'maxw-hackbook') with a folder (called 'work') which i've shared, making it "read & write" by me, "staff" and everyone. I've then mounted it to a folder on my ubuntu laptop, as follows: #on ubuntu laptop $ smbtree -s WORKGROUP \\MAXW-HACKBOOK maxw-hackbook \\MAXW-HACKBOOK\IPC$ IPC Service (maxw-hackbook) \\MAXW-HACKBOOK\work work $ sudo smbmount //MAX-HACKBOOK/work/ /mnt/hackbook-work -o ip=192.168.1.228,username=Max,password=passwordonmacbook,w This has successfully mounted the "work" folder on the macbook to the /mnt/hackbook-work folder in ubuntu. But, it's read-only, even though i've set the shared folder (on the mac) to be "read and write" by everybody. I need to have write access to that folder on the mac. • Windows doesn't recognise my USB key anymore (it used to work)

  I use my friend's USB flash drive (Corsair flash voyager 16gb) to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop computer. However, since a couple of days my laptop stopped recognizing the USB key.. while there is still no problems with all other computers. I use Windows 7 64 bits if that can help. I tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting and all those kind of tricks, but it won't work. When I connect it and open the "My computer" window, I see "Removable Disk (G:)" for a moment, then it disappears... then it reappears again and it keeps doing that periodically. I can't even right click then hit "Properties" because it disappears. As I recall, it DOES work on every other computers, I think it has to do with the driver but what can I do?

In my case I am talking about printers. I have code to go out on the network and find the IP Address of all of my printers, but would like to be able to update a server based on a printer being swapped out of a location for maintenance or repair. • Netbook recomendations for a developer

  I am thinking about getting a netbook for a secondary laptop. Ideally it would mainly be used for surfing/email/travel, but I would like it to be good enough to be able to run Visual Studio for when I am at conferences and the like. I as thinking it would be nice to be able to put a 16-32GB SSD in it, as well as 2GB of memory. Do you have any recomendations? Will a netbook even suffice, or should I upgrade to a small-form laptop? Edit: I don't need to be able to build software on it. It would just be nice to occasionally be able to try out new tools, APIs, or what have you without getting frustrated due to limited computing power.

• Any ramifications to disabling ClearPageFile

  I am runing a Dell XPS 15z with a quad core I7, 8gb ram, 7200rpm hdd, windows 7 ultimate. My laptop was taking around 3 minutes to shut down, which seemed far too high to me. I did a bit of investigation, and it seemed that the ClearPageFile reg entry was set to 1, meaning that upon shutdown my pagefile.sys was being cleared before actually shutting the machine down. When I disable this setting, my laptop shuts down in about 20 seconds - clearly a big gain. My question is, are there any side effects of having this turned off (other than the security risk of the HDD being stolen, and still having any important info that was in the RAM up for grabs)?

• Fedora 16 Running Hot

  Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler. Both are connected to the same wireless network, both have access to internet but I can't have access between them... I have used open path in the file explorer and nothing... • Ubuntu 13.10 has no Suspend or Hibernate Options

  I have a Lenova Yoga 2 Pro, and I have Ubuntu 13.10 installed. I am having some issues setting the power functions. At the moment I can not suspend or hibernate the laptop. So from Gnome 3.10 I have the option to Log Out, Shutdown & Restart. No option for Suspend / Hibernate. Weirdly however I can use these commands to get the right behaviour sudo pm-suspend sudo pm-hibernate So the laptop knows how to do this, it just is not giving me the option and also when I set "Close screen lid" to suspend, well nothing happens. It feels like there is a "connection" not being made.

• Can I reprogram a microphone input to be used as an audio output? (on XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • What special configuration is needed to have a domain controller with DNS on a VM in Hyper-V?

  I have a server running Windows Server 2012 and it only has the Hyper-V role. I have a VM also running Windows Server 2012 and it has the Active Directory: Directory Services and DNS ([example.com]) roles. It has been promoted to a domain controller for [example.com]. In the virtualization host I have joined the domain successfully. On a laptop on the network, it can ping my DNS that is inside the VM on the virtualization host. However, it can't resolve anything through the DNS. I figured it was a firewall issue where the DNS had the firewall allow rule, but the virtualization host did not. I added that, but it didn't fix the issue. On my laptop, I get "UnKnown can't find [example.com]: No response from server" immediately. There's no time out, it just comes back right away. What have I overlooked?

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem [closed]

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• NTFS.SYS error at boot in Win XP

  I am using Windows XP and this morning it didn't boot, it showed an error on "Windows/system32/config/SYSTEM" so I connected the hd to another pc, rename that file and then copy the one in Windows/Repair. And now it shows the error cannot find or corrupted "ntfs.sys". I tried copying ntfs.sys from the windows installation cd but still get the same error, also tried "EXPAND :\i836\ntoskrnl.exe ( and ntkrnlpa.exe ) :\Windows\System32" but the error persist. What other fixes can I try?
