• SQL Server replication - Log Reader Agent Read Latency Issue, Please help

  Hi all, I am facing one transactional replication delay issue on log reader agent. The log reader output is : ********* STATISTICS SINCE AGENT STARTED ************** 02-28-2011 20:12:08 Execution time (ms): 304141 Work time (ms): 304016 Distribute Repl Cmds Time(ms): 303764 Fetch time(ms): 300813 Repldone time(ms): 1826 Write time(ms): 5319 Num Trans: 15500 Num Trans/Sec: 50.984159 Num Cmds: 191639 Num Cmds/Sec: 630.358271 It seems Log Reader Reader-Thread Latency, and I also run 'sp_replcounters' and see more than 20,000 sec replication latency and keep on increasing. I used SQL profiler to monitor sp_replcmds and found sp_replcmds execution time was 11 sec to 15 sec Is it there any way to optimize to make Log Reader read faster from transaction log??? • Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin. Edit: What I'd really like to see is something similar to the Apache server-status scoreboard page with the number of connections / requests separated by virtual host. This would give me the ability to check which vhost may be experiencing a spike in traffic in real time and would also provide the data needed for a Munin module (or some alternative performance monitoring / analysis system.)

• Software for failover across multiple external hosts

  I have multiple webservers with the same content, hosted across different providers. However, I can't seem to find a nice, simple failover solution. Load-balancing software (Pound, HAProxy, etc.) are unnecessary, and I need the flexibility to manage over 100+ domains, so the paid DNS failover solutions I've found are too expensive. So far the simplest solution I've thought of is just to set a very low TTL (30min - 1hr) in each zone entry on my nameservers (running BIND). Then, continuously monitor each server, and temporarily remove failed servers from zone entries. But this seems like something that should be currently available. I only have root access to different VPSes running CentOS. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Beep code for Dell Poweredge T105

  I can't start my Poweredge T-105 just after two years. It does not display any on monitor but blue lights on 3 & 4 of system case. And it repeatedly beeps. At first, it beeps 1-3-3 and then repeats 1-1-3-4. As far as I can search on the net, Dell's beep code is 3 digit. So do I have to consider the beep code for my error is 1-3-3? Unfortunately, my warranty expired last year so any hint will be appreciated.

• Wireshark can see outside of the virtual machine?

  I'm running Windows in a VM inside of OSX. If I start Wireshark inside Windows, then a message from OSX pops up saying that Wireshark is trying to monitor all network traffic. If I accept, then Wireshark starts showing all sorts of network activity. This can't be from Windows, because I don't have anything in there doing anything, but I am running things which are communicating through the internet in OSX. Is Wireshark able to see the network activity from OSX? How can it do this if it's inside a virtual machine?

• Configuring and managing Windows web server

  Hello, I run a few websites and I was thinking of paying for a dedicated Windows web server from GoDaddy instead of paying for each site's hosting individually. I know enough about IIS to configure the Host Header and stuff like that, but I'm a little fuzzy about the email portion of the hosting. I have a few questions: Do I need to install an SMTP server on the web server to allow for emails to be sent/received to a website email address? Or is there another approach that I'm unaware of? Are there tools that monitor the amount of bandwidth used by the server? GoDaddy charges for bandwidth and I want to make sure I don't go over. Am I opening a can of worms that I don't really want to open by going the dedicated server route? Things like server updates, security, etc? Thanks!

• "Breadcrumbs" for series of hostnames?

  Does anyone know of a shell that would show a series of breadcrumbs as I navigate into/out of various servers, like this: Home > Build Machine > Vagrant > Docker-base Hopefully it could auto-detect logging in and out of various boxes and display the hostnames. Perhaps with a simple "no circular links", one could just try and monitor the hostname, but I don't know if there is a shell that can easily act as a 'parent' to the other shells on these various systems so that it can query hostname and/or other item. Any thoughts?

• No sound (USB speakers) in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope

  I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 and have been unable to get sound functioning. I have a set of USB speakers (not USB powered with a stereo plug... they are totally USB). I've tried plugging them directly into the tower as well as into the USB port on my Dell 2405FPW monitor. Both USB ports are functioning correctly (I tested by sticking a flash drive in there - they both read it), and the speakers are functioning correctly in Windows. If it's relevant, I have an SB Audigy 2 sound card that came with the computer, but is not being used. Any ideas? Thanks! EDIT: These are the speakers - Logitech S-150 USB Speakers

• Autoscale Rackspace Cloud, Scalr or DIY?

  I'm looking into creating a setup on Rackspace Cloud that will allow me to autoscale my webservers (no db) on demand. Preferably using something like response time. I've read into configuration tools like Puppet/Chef, but I'm thinking I can just launch from prepared server images that are ready to go. Is there any tool out there already that can monitor my existing node response times and then launch or scale up new ones based upon certain variables like average X load over Y time? I see there are commercial offerings like Scalr, Rightscale, but how would I do this myself?

• CPU's on Hyper-V host system is just idling, even though VM's are at full throttle

  Hello, I have a server that is running Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V, with 8 gigs of RAM and Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53 Ghz, which gives me 8 logical cores in the performance monitor on the host system. I have set up three Virtual Machines, all running Windows 2008 32 bit. Build server, running Team City Staging server SQL Server, running SQL Server 2005 These three machines are running very sluggishly, they are at 100% cpu even though the host system is barely using any cpu at all, typically below 10% total. Could anyone please give some tips as to the best setup for CPU allocating? Should I have set each server to have two cores, or should I increase this number above the total number of cores on the host? What is a good number to set on the Virtual Machine Reserve and Virtual Machine Limit? Is 8 gigs of physical RAM insufficient for 3 VM's? Thanks for reading. :)

• Virtual memory on Linux doesn't add up?

  I was looking at System Monitor on Linux and noticed that Firefox is using 441 MB of memory, and several other applications are using 274, 257, 232, etc (adding up to over 3 GB of virtual memory). So I switch over to the Resources tab, and it says I'm using 462 MB of memory and not touching swap. I'm confused. What does the virtual memory amount mean then if the programs aren't actually using it. I was thinking maybe memory they've requested but aren't using, but how would the OS know that? I can't think of any "I might need this much memory in the future" function..

• Black Screen when Computer Boots

  I'm having a serious problem with my computer; I think I've narrowed it down to the motherboard, but I'd like a second opinion before I spend the money. Before I moved into my new apartment, my desktop was working fine; now, it just won't work. It will turn on, the fans will spin up, lights come on... but nothing appears on the screen. No POST, nothing. I've tried: A different monitor (both are VGA) A different video-card (both are DVI, PCIe) Three different, known-good VGA-DVI adapters The onboard video port (VGA) Reseating the memory, and trying only one stick Different, known-good wall-outlets Unplugging the HDD and CD-drive from both the motherboard and PSU Replacing the PSU Has anyone had this happen before? • Monit and Thin and Unfound Gems

  I've been using Monit to monitor my Thin server and everything was working until I upgraded my Rails version from 2.3.4 to 2.3.14. Now when I try and start Thin using monit it gives me an unfound gem error: Missing the Rails 2.3.14 gem. • HP DL160 vs DL360 for virtualization

  Hi, We're planning to consolidate our infrastructure (a dozen servers). We'll buy two or three identical new servers who will be setup as a XenServer pool. Load balancing and HA tools will monitor the pool and vMotion VMs in case of failure/overload. I know that the DL100 series of HP servers is cheaper than the DL300 serie (in every sense of the word). As we don't need local storage (we have a SAN) and can live with a temporary down server (provided that Xen Server HA tools work as advertized), what are the downsides going with the DL100 serie ? • Continuing permissions issues - ASP.net, IIS 7, Server 2008 - 0x80070005 (http 500.19) error

  I created an ASP.net MVC developed web application and I am trying to set up IIS. The Error: Http error 500.19, error code 0x80070005, Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions, config file: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\BudgetManagerMain\BudgetManager\web.config If I set the AppPool to use 'administrator' i have no problems and can access the site just fine. If i set to NETWORK SERVICE (or anything else including self-created admin or non-admin user accounts), i get the above error. Things I have tried: identity for Application pool named 'test' is 'NetworkService' Set full access privs for wwwroot and all children files/folders verified effective permissions and NETWORK SERVICE has full access. Authentication on my site is set for anonymous and running under Application Pool Identity I do not have any physical path credentials set on the website confirmed website is set to run under the application pool named 'test' using Process Monitor, here is a summary of what i found on the ACCESS DENIED event EVENT TAB: Class: File System Operation: CreateFile Result: Access Denied Path: ..\web.config Desired Access: Generic Read Disposition: Open Options: Sybnchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory file Attributes: N ShareMode: Read AllocaitonSize: n/a PROCESS TAB ...lots of stuff that seems irrelevant User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

• Windows 7 port Forwarding Issue

  I can't get port forwarding to work now that I am using windows 7 (64-bit). I am using a wireless connection (no wired connection available). I have the ports forwarded (IP has been double checked, router settings are confirmed), there is an exception for all of the programs in question in windows firewall, and in the resource monitor windows lists the ports as available, not restricted, and yet when I either use a specific program (ie utorrent, DC++, Command & Conquer 3) or check using firefox, the port reads as closed. How do I get the port forwarding to work?

• IIS7 rejecting POST requests with 400 error.

  I have a web application that is supposed to handle post requests from SAP. This has been working fine at other customers with win2k3 systems (IIS6) and win2k8 (IIS7) systems. However, on this specific customer's site, IIS responds with a 400 response, without calling my aspx page. In fact, I don't even see it appear in the w3c log for the virtual directory. I do see the request using Network Monitor, so I know no firewalls and the like are eating the request, and as far as I can tell, all of the fields of the request are valid (there is "content-length", it looks correct (this is a sending of a 28K tiff file - which isn't MIME encoded, curiously enough now that I think of it...) Ideas?

• Recover OffScreen Window in Windows 8

  Someone asked a very similar question in regards to window recovery for windows xp: Similar Recovery I'm using windows 8 (or 8.1 now). I run Dual Monitors. On Monitor 2 I sometimes have the input switched to something else other than the windows display (Mac or PS3). If there was a program that was displaying on Window #2 that does not have 'move' where I could potentially alt-space-m arrow keys. Is there another way to get that program to display on Window #1? I tried right click on the program and doesn't seem to be anything there. I tried Windows Key and Arrows. I Tried right click toolbar and cascade. I'm hoping this is a DUP or Softball question because this annoys the crap out of me. Thanks!!

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

• WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSOD - what is wrong?

  Hello I have a problem with my PC getting the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bsod. It is a few months old pc. I am not overclocking or changing anything in bios, but sometimes (this is my third time) I get this bsod out of nowhere. This last time I was just watching some stream on twitch when the pc suddenly crashed. I have everything up to date in windows update and every other driver as well. Everything in Open hardware Monitor seems ok. Right now as of 10 min after the crash, the CPU temp is at 38°C, fans are at 1400RPM I am using Windows 8.1 Pro 64b. • Why do my speakers get distorted randomly on Windows 7?

  I have a studio monitor setup. I have 2 KRK 6's and a Focusrite Firewire Pro 24. Every few hours my speakers sound distorted and my solution has been go to sound levels Properties of Saffire Audio Device Advanced Default Format Toggle to 16 bit then back to 24bit. Why does it screw up every few hours? Sometimes one speaker doesn't output too and this same process resets it but that's more rare. Is this a OS issue or Focusrite Driver Issue?

• How do I see what connections are being made?

  My DDWRT router is showing that my computer has a connection count around 600! The router is at 100% CPU use. How can I see what's making all the connections? So far, I've opened up Resource Monitor and checked the network tab. I can sort by which program is using the most network bandwidth (Pale Moon browser), but I can't see what's making all of the connections. Or rather, where all the connections are being toward (trying to find what tab must be making all of these connections). I've also tried netstat -A, but it apparently doesn't show the actual number of connections being made. At least, the list of established connections isn't very long, by any means (like enough to account for the 500+ connections apparently being made.
