• `DesignMode` in subcontrols is not set correctly?

  I have a compound control contains nested controls. The problem i am facing is that control read properties from a global setting class which is static and intern read from setting file. To stop individual control from accessing configuration in design mode i added check in each control. If(!DesignMode){ ... //Initialize properties e.g. prop = AppConfig.GetProperty("prop1"); } The problem is that individual control work fine when open in VS. But when i open top control containing nested control i get error by VS designer. The error is that in a nested control DesignMode=false for some reason. I also created a test app and created a simple control within another control to test if there is a problem with VS but it seem to work correctly for any depth of controls. I dont even know how to debug this. For now i comment out the property initializing code and build it and then open designer and there uncomment it and build it again to run it. Did anyone came across this problem or is there any way to fix it.

• Black Corners On Grouped UITableViewCells Only After Navigation Pops

  I am not graphics expert but I somehow managed to make some good looking custom grouped UITableViewCells by setting the background view to a backgroundView with some CG code. In all SDK's up to 3.1.3 (maybe 3.2... I haven't tested on the iPad) this was working great, but I think a more recent SDK has introduced a change in the way graphics are cached offscreen. Upon first render, everything is great: The drawing is fine and the corners are transparent. If I push a couple of view controllers on the navigation stack and come back, there are now black corners that appear in the views: BEFORE && AFTER I have tons of code, most of which is written up here. I have tried tweaking to the best of my ability, looking at the docs for applicable changes, but after at least 8 hours in I still cannot find what might cause this. I have tried setting every view I can think of to be backgroundColor=clearColor and opaque=NO What else am I missing? Any debugging tips? It seems that in my unit tests that service instance could not access the config file (null pointer) for its setting while it could access that setting when I run "run-app". • How to set a EditText in a certain column of a TableLayout?

  I have a TableLayout on one Android Activity UI. It has two columns. Now I need to add a new row, and put an EditText box in second column of that new row. And also, I want that EditText full fill the whole cell. I have some code like this: TableRow tr = new TableRow(context); EditText et = new EditText(context); et.SetMaxLines(4); etText.setLayoutParams(new TableRow.LayoutParams(1)); //set it to the second coloumn tr.addView(et); tl.addView(tr); //tl is the tableLayout It puts the EditText in the second column fine, but the EditText is too small. I tried to use etText.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT, LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT)); but that seems to disabled the TableRow.LayoutParams setting. I guess each control can only have one LayoutParamas setting. So, how to make the EditText as a 4 lines text editor and also make sure it is in the second column of that row? Thanks.

Using imagejpeg (quality of 80) instead of imagepng it's about 4kB. How can this be, especially at the lowest quality setting for imagepng? I tried using imagecopy instead of imagecopyresampled, and imagecreate instead of the true color version. Unfortunately the images come out mangled somehow. Is there any way to get PNG thumbnails of a reasonably small file size (about 4 kB at 140 x 140)? Or do I have to use JPEG?

• How to set up a load/stress test for a web site?

  I've been tasked with stress/load testing our company web site out of the blue and know nothing about doing so. Every search I make on google for "how to load test a web site" just comes back with various companies and software to physically do the load testing. For now I'm more interested in how to actually go about setting up a load test like what I should take into account prior to load testing, what pages within my site I should be testing load against and what things I'm going to want to monitor when doing the test. Our web site is on a multi-tier system complete with a separate database server (IIS 7 Web Server, SQL Server 2000 db). I imagine I'd want to monitor both the web server and the database server for testing load however when setting up scenarios to load test the web server I'd have to use pages that query the database to see any load on the database server at the same time. Are web servers and database servers generally tested simultaneously or are they done as separate tests? As you can see I'm pretty clueless as to the whole operation so any incite as to how to go about this would be very helpful. FYI I have been tinkering with Pylot and was able to create and run a scenario against our site but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the results or if the scenario I created is even a scenario worth measuring for our site. • Using CGContextDrawTiledImage at different zooms causes massive memory growth

  I'm working on app an where there's a view in a zoomable UIScrollView. When the user zooms in or out, I redraw the view that's in the UIScrollView to be nice and sharp. That view has a background image that I draw with CGContextDrawTiledImage. I noticed that memory usage grows every time I switch to a new zoom level. It looks like CGContextDrawTiledImage keeps a cache somewhere of the image scaled to different sizes. So, If I go from 1.0 to 1.1x zoom, memory use grows. Going back to 1.0 doesn't cause it to grow, but then going to 1.05 and then 1.2 causes it to grow twice. Back to 1.1 and no growth. Of course, the zoom level is under user control so I don't have control over how many zoom levels happen. Right now my background image is kind of massive (512x512), so this causes memory usage to grow very quickly. It doesn't show up as a memory leak in Instruments, just additional allocations that never get freed. I've tried to find a way to free the cache that appears to be being created, but no luck. It doesn't seem to respond to low memory warnings, for example. I also tried setting the view's backgroundColor to a UIColor created with colorWithPatternImage, but that doesn't work because I'm doing the scaling by changing the graphics context's CTM, not by setting the view's transform. Any ideas on how to keep memory usage from blowing up?

• Facebook-ios-sdk with embedded UIWebView

  I'm working with the new facebook-ios-sdk and have successfully integrated the api into my native app. I am able to authenticate a user and properly setup permissions using a popup dialog with the ios-sdk classes. For a portion of my app I need to use the facebook connection within a UIWebView, using javascript and html to process data within the webview. Given that the user is already logged in and authenticated via the above routine, I would have assumed that the UIWebView would share those credentials, or that there would at least be some way to pass or assign the credentials to the webview. Unfortunately, I found this earlier post which seems to suggest that this scheme doesn't quite work (iOS - being logged-in in a webView after logging in with the SDK). Has anyone else encountered this and/or found a work around? This seems like it would be a fairly straightforward use case given that I'm not trying to launch mobile safari or something like that - it's all within the same native app. It just seems like there must be some sort of easy trick or setting that I'm missing. Maybe somehow setting cookies in the new UIWebView? or something like this?

• How to make smooth transition from a WebBrowser control to an Image in Silverlight 4?

  Hi, I have the following XAML on my page: `<Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <Viewbox Stretch="Uniform"> <Image x:Name="myImage" /> </Viewbox> <WebBrowser x:Name="myBrowser" /> </Grid>` and then in the codebehind I'm switching the visibility between the image and the browser content: myBrowser.Visibility = Visibility.Collapsed; myImage.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(p)); myImage.Visibility = Visibility.Visible; and myImage.Visibility = Visibility.Collapsed; myBrowser.Source = new Uri(myPath + p, UriKind.Absolute); myBrowser.Visibility = Visibility.Visible; This works fine, but what the client now wants is a smooth transition between when the Image is shown and when the browser is shown. I tried several approaches but always ran into dead end. Do you have any ideas? I tried setting two states using the VSM and than displaying a white rectangle on top as an overlay, before the swap takes place, but that didn't work (I guess it's because nothing can be placed above the WebBroser???) I tried setting the Visibility of the image control and the webbrowser control using the VSM, but that didn't work either. I really don't know what else to try to solve this simple task. • em1: watchdog timeout -- resetting virtualbox

  everyone. I try to configure network adapter of my freebsd on virtualbox machine. At first setting up, I got it right. However, after a couple of reboots, my VM gives me a error message: says "em1:Watchdog timeout -- resetting" I tried to google it, and there is no solution that works for me. The following is my network adapter of my VM: Apapter1: NAT Adapter2: Host-only Adapter vboxnet0 On my Virtualbox setting: Host-only networks: Adapter: IPv4 address: 192.168.56.10 IPv4 network mask: 255.255.255.0 On my FreeBSD VM /etc/rc.conf ifconfig_em0="DHCP" ifconfig_em1="inet 192.168.56.11 netmask 255.255.255.0" Moreover, strange thing is that, for example, if timeout error message show at ttyv0 , when I log in at different ttyv[1-9], the error message will not be shown. but in ttyv0, it still gives me the message. And, in term of functionality of em1, it does work. I have no clue about this problem. Hoping any one can give me a solution or suggestion. That will be great! Thanks a lot. • Scalability 101: How can I design a scalable web application using PHP?

  I am building a web-application and have a couple of quick questions. From what I learnt, one should not worry about scalability when initially building the app and should only start worrying when the traffic increases. However, this being my first web-application, I am not quite sure if I should take an approach where I design things in an ad-hoc manner and later "fix" them. I have been reading stories about how people start off with an app that gets millions of users in a week or two. Not that I will face the same situation but I can't help but wonder, how do these people do it? Currently, I bought a shared hosting account on Lunarpages and that got me started in building and testing the application. However, I am interested in learning how to build the same application in a scalable-manner using the cloud, for instance, Amazon's EC2. From my understanding, I can see a couple of components: There is a load balancer that first receives requests and then decides where to route each request This request is then handled by a server replica that then processes the request and updates (if required) the database and sends back the response to the client If a similar request comes in, then a caching mechanism like memcached kicks into picture and returns objects from the cache A blackbox that handles database replication Specifically, I am trying to do the following: Setting up a load balancer (my homework revealed that HAProxy is one such load balancer) Setting up replication so that databases can be synchronized Using memcached Configuring Apache to work with multiple web servers Partitioning application to use Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3 (my application is something that will need great deal of storage) Finally, how can I avoid burning myself when using Amazon services? Because this is just a learning phase, I can probably do with 2-3 servers with a simple load balancer and replication but until I want to avoid paying loads of money accidentally. I am able to find resources on individual topics but am unable to find something that starts off from the big picture. Can someone please help me get started?

• sIFR 3 randomly placing text on a single line in FF3.6

  Hello, sIFR 3 is behaving strangely in Firefox. The actual sIFR flash element is set within a box that is 412px wide. In IE, Chrome, Safari, etc., the with of the Flash element is a consistent 412px; however, in Firefox, the Flash element is briefly as wide as the Body element, before correcting itself. When the page finishes loading, sometimes the Flash element remains that wide, breaking the layout (the Flash text flows underneath the sidebar to the right). Setting a width in the CSS for the .sIFR-flash element causes it to remain the proper 412px wide, but the text doesn't wrap at all--it just cuts off at the right edge, and the height of the flash element remains one line high. The markup is simple; it's just an h2 within a div. My sIFR code: var clerkenwell = { src: '/flash/sifr.swf' }; sIFR.activate(clerkenwell); sIFR.replace(clerkenwell, { selector: '.post h2', css: '.sIFR-root { color: #1899c4; text-transform:uppercase; font-size:30px; }', transparent: 'true', }); Setting forceWidth: 'true', just causes the same problem as using a CSS width on the .sIFR-flash element. So: how can I get the sIFR text to remain as wide as its containing element while allowing for line breaks in Firefox? Thanks for any and all help!

• Passing bundle to activity set as singletask

  So I have a MapActivity that runs an asynchtask that occasionally updates what exactly it's displaying on the map (via a string). I originally pass this string in from the intent when the activity is first created. And then if you click on one of the drawables on the map, it opens a new activity, which can then create a new mapview (same class) with a different string setting. The problem I have is that I only want one instance of the mapview to be running at once. Thus I set android:launchmode="singletask" in the manifest. This works in that it brings the mapactivity to the front, but is there any way to send it a new intent bundle to get a new setting for the string it needs? I tried regetting the extras from the bundle, but it seems to retain the old bundle, not the new intent that was passed to it. I'm not sure I want to do startActivityForResult because the 2nd activity may or may not want to update the original activity. I hope that made sense. I can post code if necessary, but I think that should explain my situation.

  This is a follow up from a question of mine that was just answered concerning parsing numbers in an array. I have an array, data[], with numbers that I'd like to use in a calculation and then put the resulting values into another array. So say data[0] = 100. I'd like to find a percentage using the calculatin, (data[0]/dataSum*100).toFixed(2) where dataSum is the sum of all the numbers in data[]. I've tried: dataPercentage = []; for (var i=0; i < data.length; i++) { data[i] = parseFloat(data[i]); dataSum += data[i]; // looping through data[i] and setting it equal to dataPercentage. dataPercentage[] = (data[i]/dataSum*100).toFixed(2); // thought maybe I was overriding dataPercentage everytime I looped? dataPercentage[] += (data[i]/dataSum*100).toFixed(2); } I also tried just setting dataPercentage = [(data/dataSum*100).toFixed(2)], but I think this creates a nested array, which I don't think is what I need.

Just not setting is not a acceptable solution as I want to return an appropriate message to user (in a label in web form). • Objective-C: alloc of object within init of another object (memory management)

  In my .h file I have: NSMutableArray *myArray; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *myArray; My .m file looks basically like this: @synthesize myArray; - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.myArray = .... ? // here I want to create an empty array } return self; } - (void) dealloc { [self.myArray release]; [super dealloc]; } What I'm not sure about is what do to in the init. 1) self.myArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; 2) NSMutableArray *tmp = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; self.myArray = tmp; [tmp release]; Solution 1 doesn't seem right to me, because of my @property (retain) setting I automatically increase the retain counter when setting self.myArray, but additionally I have already a "+1 retain" due to the [NSMutableArray alloc]. Thus the second solution seems more correct to me, even though it is cumbersome. Also am I wondering if self.myArray = ... is actually the same as [self setMyArray:...] and thus does increase the retain count.

  This is C#.Net code: How to share Cookie between 2 HttpWebRequest calls? Details: I am posting a form in first request, this form contains some setting variables which are used by the system. lets say there is a input field in the form which sets the size of grid pages to be displayed in other pages. Once i have updated the setings in previous request, i go to send a request to another page which shows off asp.net gridview/grid. The grid might contaian several pages and the page size should be the one which i set in previous request. But when i do this via HttpWebReeust it does not happen. When i do it via browser, loading the setting page in the browser and then going to the grid view page... i see the page size is updated. I want to achieve this via code. Sicne i am scraping this grid. i have to set page size or visit the gird pages one by one via code. Or is it possible to set a cookie on 2nd request which is used to set in first request? It will be great if i go this way. any solution?

• Programmatically setup a PEAP connection in Windows Mobile

  I have been working on this for a few days and this is doing my head in: Our application is built using the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and running on Windows Mobile 5 & 6 devices. We can set the WLAN connection of the device programmatically using the Wireless Zero Config functions (described here: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms894771.aspx), most notably the WZCSetInterface function which we pinvoke from our application. This works fine for WEP and WPA-PSK connections. In a recent effort to add support for WPA2 networks we decided to modify the code. We have successfully added support for WPA2 which uses a certificate for the 802.1x authentication by setting the correct registry settings before calling WZCSetInterface. Now we want to do the same for WPA2 using PEAP (MS-CHAPv2) authentication. When manually creating such a connection in Windows Mobile the user will be prompted to enter the domain/user/password details. In our application we will have those details stored locally and want to do this all programmatically without any user intervention. So I thought going along the same route as the certificate authentication, setting the correct registry entries before calling WZCSetInterface. The registry settings we set are: \HKCU\Comm\EAP\Config\[ssid name] Enable8021x = 1 (DWORD) LastAuthSuccessful = 1 (DWORD) EapTypeId = 25 (DWORD) Identity = "domain\username" (string) Password = binary blob containing the password that is encrypted using the CryptProtectData function (described here: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms938309.aspx) But when these settings are set and I call WZCSetInterface with the correct parameters, it still prompts me with the User Logon dialog asking for the domain/username/password. Has anyone got an idea what I need to do to prevent the password dialog from appearing and connect straight away with the settings stored in the registry?

• How do you make an added row from QueryAddRow() the first row of the result from a query?

  I am outputting a query but need to specify the first row of the result. I am adding the row with QueryAddRow() and setting the values with QuerySetCell(). I can create the row fine, I can add the content to that row fine. If I leave the argument for the row number off of QuerySetCell() then it all works great as the last result of the query when output. However, I need it to be first row of the query but when I try to set the row attribute with the QuerySetCell it just overwrites the first returned row from my query (i.e. my QueryAddRow() replaces the first record from my query). What I currently have is setting a variable from recordCount and arranging the output but there has to be a really simple way to do this that I am just not getting. • Modifying resource contents of a running executable

  All, I store my application settings in a resource. When my program first loads, I read the specified resource using WinAPI. I then parse the retrieved byte data. This works flawlessly for me. Now let's say that a user alters a setting in my application. He/she checks a checkbox control. I would like to save the updated setting to my resource. However, it seems that my call to UpdateResource will not work while my application is running. I can't modify my resource data even though it is the same size. First, is it possible to modify a running image's resource data? Second, if that is not possible, what alternatives do I have for storing settings internally within my application? NOTE: I must have the settings within my running executable. They cannot be on the harddrive or in the registry. Please don't even suggest that as an option.

• Should we EVER use dp values for width/height?

  I've come across a project done by some other team which I have to fix. They used dp values for images' width/height. When I tried to adopt the layout for some tablets and/or mobiles, I've faced a lot of troubles. For example, the image of 40x40 dp has top padding of 15dp. When such image is loaded by some new mobile screen, the image is not where is was supposed to be - it's either shifted or distorted or of the wrong size. Now I need to propose a redesign of the whole app and I need some advise from the more experienced community. Should I abandon such layout policy (described abobe) and do like this: make the image with the size of 40x40 px position the image for the mdpi screen set its height/width to wrap_content do like this for other images after I finish layout for mdpi, resize each image for ldpi, hdpi and xhdpi screens in case of a special mobile/tablet, make a special set of images + xml files Is there a way when you would advise to use the explicit size of some images? Do you advise setting the size of images in xml layout or setting size via photoshop or similar graphics tools and then resize images for other screen sizes or screen densities?

• Set the amount of rows JList show (Java)

  Hi all. Problem: I have a method that creates a list from the parsed ArrayList. I manage to show the list in the GUI, without scrollbar. However, I am having problem setting it to show only the size of ArrayList. Meaning, say if the size is 6, there should only be 6 rows in the shown List. Below is the code that I am using. I tried setting the visibleRowCount as below but it does not work.
