• Macbook Pro wifi won't work

  I opened xdiganose and it told me to go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware in order to download and install the wireless driver. I followed the instructions for Ubuntu and it aborted the installation saying something about an unsupported device (I should've saved the output, I'm using a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro.) Now when I trysudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer I get this: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done firmware-b43-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 338 not upgraded. What do I do?

• Ardour won't rewind when jack time master

  Using Ubuntu Studio 12.04, ardour will not rewind when it is set to the jack time master. I've read that this could be due to a jack/ardour version conflict, but I am not sure what the correct combo should be. The same thing happens with "ardour 2.8.14 (built from revision 13065)" and "ardour 2.8.12 (built from revision 10144)". The latter is the default installation with ubuntu studio 12.04 LTS. • BoundingBox created from mesh to origin, making it bigger

  I'm working on a level-based survival game and I want to design my scenes in Maya and export them as a single model (with multiple meshes) into XNA. My problem is that when I try to create Bounding Boxes(for Collision purposes) for each of the meshes, the are calculated from origin to the far-end of the current mesh, so to speak. I'm thinking that it might have something to do with the position each mesh brings from Maya and that it's interpreted wrongly... or something. • Alien deletes .deb when converting from .rpm

  I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. sudo alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically? • Does Ubuntu generally post timely security updates?

  Concrete issue: The Oneiric nginx package is at version 1.0.5-1, released in July 2011 according to the changelog. The recent memory-disclosure vulnerability (advisory page, CVE-2012-1180, DSA-2434-1) isn't fixed in 1.0.5-1. If I'm not misreading the Ubuntu CVE page, all Ubuntu versions seem to ship a vulnerable nginx. Is this true? If so: I though there was a security team at Canonical that's actively working on issues like this, so I expected to get a security update within a short timeframe (hours or days) through apt-get update. Is this expectation -- that keeping my packages up-to-date is enough to stop my server from having known vulnerabilities -- generally wrong? If so: What should I do to keep it secure? Reading the Ubuntu security notices wouldn't have helped in this case, as the nginx vulnerability was never posted there.

• Mathematica 8 crashes Ubuntu 13.10

  I have Mathematica 8 installed on my Ubuntu laptop since 2011. I updated Ubuntu several times, and experienced no problems with Mathematica. It also worked smoothly after I updated Ubuntu to 13.10 (it worked for sure for a week after update). When I tried to start Mathematica today by executing a .sh-file, the screen went black, I was logged out from the session and thrown back to the login screen. Typing mathematica in the terminal produced the same effect. Typing mathematica -cleanstart or mathematica -mesa did not help. Starting Gnome session with or without effects did not help Launching mathematica under another user account did not help. I still can run text-only version of mathematica by typing math in the terminal. I don't remember making any changes to my configuration except for installing updates. Is there any quick way to fix this behavior? How can I know which component exactly crashed? Where should I look for crash logs?

• Check Your Spelling, Grammar, and Style in Firefox and Chrome

  Are you tired of making simple writing mistakes that get past your browser’s spell-check?  Here’s how you can get advanced grammar check and more in Firefox and Chrome with After the Deadline. Microsoft Word has spoiled us with grammar, syntax, and spell checking, but the default spell check in Firefox and Chrome still only does basic checks.  Even webapps like Google Docs don’t check more than basic spelling errors.  However, WordPress.com is an exception; it offers advanced spelling, grammar, and syntax checking with its After the Deadline proofing system.  This helps you keep from making embarrassing mistakes on your blog posts, and now, thanks to a couple free browser plugins, it can help you keep from making these mistakes in any website or webapp. After the Deadline in Google Chrome Add the After the Deadline extension (link below) to Chrome as usual. As soon as it’s installed, you’re ready to start improving your online writing.  To check spelling, grammar, and more, click the ABC button that you’ll now see at the bottom of most text boxes online. After a quick scan, grammar mistakes are highlighted in green, complex expressions and other syntax problems are highlighted in blue, and spelling mistakes are highlighted in red as would be expected.  Click on an underlined word to choose one of its recommended changes or ignore the suggestion. Or, if you want more explanation about what was wrong with that word or phrase, click Explain for more info. And, if you forget to run an After the Deadline scan before submitting a text entry, it will automatically check to make sure you still want to submit it.  Click Cancel to go back and check your writing first.   To change the After the Deadline settings, click its icon in the toolbar and select View Options.  Additionally, if you want to disable it on the site you’re on, you can click Disable on this site directly from the popup. From the settings page, you can choose extra things to check for such as double negatives and redundant phrases, as well as add sites and words to ignore. After the Deadline in Firefox Add the After the Deadline add-on to Firefox (link below) as normal. After the Deadline basically the same in Firefox as it does in Chrome.  Select the ABC icon in the lower right corner of textboxes to check them for problems, and After the Deadline will underline the problems as it did in Chrome.  To view a suggested change in Firefox, right-click on the underlined word and select the recommended change or ignore the suggestion. And, if you forget to check, you’ll see a friendly reminder asking if you’re sure you want to submit your text like it is. You can access the After the Deadline settings in Firefox from the menu bar.  Click Tools, then select AtD Preferences.  In Firefox, the settings are in a options dialog with three tabs, but it includes the same options as the Chrome settings page.  Here you can make After the Deadline as correction-happy as you like.   Conclusion The web has increasingly become an interactive place, and seldom does a day go by that we aren’t entering text in forms and comments that may stay online forever.  Even our insignificant tweets are being archived in the Library of Congress.  After the Deadline can help you make sure that your permanent internet record is as grammatically correct as possible.  Even though it doesn’t catch every problem, and even misses some spelling mistakes, it’s still a great help.   Possible Duplicate: How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems So suppose I'm currently developing a variant of a snakes game for the iPhone, and you decided to call it "snakes". First, in general, how would you find out if a name's been copyrighted or not? It's probably safe with "snakes" because it's such a common word, and that there's been so many games around (please correct me if I'm wrong), but with some people copyrighting the name "edge", it would be best to be a bit careful. Second, suppose I decided to go with some name that is guaranteed to be different (e.g EL SERPENTES DE LOS REYES), would gameplay be a point of contention on copyright issues? For example, the tetris game is sort of "copyrighted" at the apple app store, and there was a crackdown on anyone using the word "tris" or anything related to it. However, if there was a game with the gameplay of tetris (or loosely very similar), with the name "BLOXODEREX", can it be liable to copyright/DMCA issues?

  I have a site with a phpbb forum. I'm working on adding a dokuwiki wiki to the site, and I would like to integrate the two. The phpbb forum is running phpbb 3.0.8, and the dokuwiki installation is running 2011-05-25a "Rincewind". Basically what I want is: for users to be able to log into the dokuwiki wiki with their phpbb account. Users should only be able to register from the phpbb registration interface. Cookie integration would be nice, but is not required. Is there any way to do this?
