• Lost the config of my monitor once I connected it to a KVM switch.

  I used to have a monitor (Acer 20", AL2017) connected to the external video port of my laptop. Everything was great and I could get a rather high resolution available when setting it under Ubuntu (all versions). But since I connected it to a KVM, the monitor is no more recognized, and I cannot go beyond 1024x768. My video adapter is an Intel chipset 9xx from an older Pentium Core 2 Duo laptop. The same monitor, using another video chipset (Intel 82G33/G31 rev 02) is properly detected through the switch box. Looks to me like the video chipset is not the best, and I can live with this. I see that I have no xorg.conf, and I understand that I would need to generate one so I can then use it to force the available modes on the X system. How can I generate the xorg.conf file for my Intel video chip, so I can use it then ? Merci :-)

• Has programming ruined your perception of round numbers?

  Most of the world works in base 10 nowadays, but as programmers working on binary systems, we constantly find ourselves working with powers of 2. While most people consider integer multiples of powers of 10 "nice and round" and somehow aesthetically superior, I found early on in my programming adventures that multiples of powers of 2 feel much more intuitively round to me: fewer factors, of course. I'm much more likely to lay out a Web site using, say, 8- or 16-pixel margins rather than 10 or 20, and when someone remarks that 128 is an insanely arbitrary number of ounces to be in a gallon, I have to smile a little inside at how, just perhaps, the U.S. system might be superior to metric in one small way. I'm just curious: has programming ruined (read: altered) your perception of the roundness of a number?

Ya !  lock up in your safe, wait 20 years, then sell this antique for a fortune. There is will be staff cut and Moto promised to help employees at these difficult times. India is one of the most sort out market for mobile makers, what is running in Googles mind ? May be world is falling apart like Mayans predicted ?

• Not able to suspend or hibernate

  My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate, the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I searched a little on the internet, and installed 'acpi-support' according to some advice but it does not help. Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks and regards!   What features of old computers helped you learn to be a better programmer -- but don't seem to be available on new computers? I imagine that, while educational, you are really glad some features are gone, such as programs ran so slowly that I could almost see each pixel being plotted, so I got a visceral feel for the effect of various optimizations. I imagine other features you may be a little nostalgic for, such as I could turn on the computer, and write a short program that printed "Hello, World" on the printer, before ever "booting" a "disk". (I'm hoping that this is constructive enough to avoid the fate of the " What have we lost from computers 20 years ago ?" question).

• Moving a body in a specific direction using XNA with Farseer Physics

  I have a custom polygon attached to a body, which looks like this: What I am trying to accomplish is getting the body to move according to wherever the tip of the body is. So far this is what I've tried: if (ks.IsKeyDown(Keys.Up)) { body.ApplyForce(new Vector2(0, -20),body.GetLocalPoint(new Vector2(0,0))); } if (ks.IsKeyDown(Keys.Left)) { body.ApplyTorque(-500); } if (ks.IsKeyDown(Keys.Right)) { body.ApplyTorque(500); } The body rotates fine - but when I try making the body accelerate according to the tip of the body - assuming I have specified the tip correctly(I am pretty sure I haven't), it just spins around, as if I have applied Torque to it. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to fix this problem?

• How to handle shoot instructions, in a multiplayer TD

  I'm currently working on a Multiplayer Tower Defense game, using ImpactJS & Node. I seek some clarification about how to handle projectiles from towers, let me explain. So the server is running the master game, and the clients just follow the instruction from the server. Lets say there is about 20 towers on the stage, all needs instructions for which creeps to shoot at. Now lets say each towers fires twice in a second, that's 40 shots each second, (worst case scenario) which is 40 request per second to each client, would't this casue alot of stress to the server, saying that we have 50 games running the same time. So what i am really asking, is this method inefficient, and is there a smarter way to handle all these instructions. Thank you.

• How to prevent Ubuntu from changing screen brightness?

  I have recently installed 12.04 on ASUS-K53SV-V300. I can change the brightness on start-up with: echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness >> /etc/rc.local or manually by Fn key. But, whenever Ubuntu dim my screen brightness to save power or wake-up from suspend or inactive for 20-30 seconds, brightness reset to high (my problem get much more when on battery). How can I disable screen brightness service to prevent it from changing my brightness? What service work on screen brightness? If I disable this service, can I manually set brightness by command? I found a program to work on brightness instead of default power manager.

• How can I reduce the number of spammers registering with my phpBB site?

  I have a site which runs phpBB, on this site I have enabled user authentication through email when registering enabled captcha However I still get spam users every 20 to 30 minutes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this with the ucp.php file? I have already loaded a large list of IP addresses yet there are spam users registering all the time. One thing I can do is I can check the bounce mail to find the username and can pipe bounced mails to a php script and immediately delete that user, but I have not got any bounce back from hotmail or some other email clients. So this way it will catch hold of a certain percent of spam users but there are still a huge amount of users spamming. What else can I do to prevent spammers abusing my phpBB site?

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Unfortunately, for some reason, I cannot execute any files on the drive, even after following the answer here (I was able to mount the volume just fine, but the error persists). How can I fix this?   how does one make a shortcut for firefox ( like any other application that has an icon) that has a command firefox 24 run from terminal. Reason i had to uninstall previous version ( 20 ) of firefox was because it was crashing often. This version ( 24 ) is stable ( and looks like it will continue to be so ). I am at present running from terminal firefox 24. Need that I make an icon which opens it and most important overlay menu ( like in mac) which is not happening at present. My goal is set as a regular expression for a particular page (/success?.*), and I have a funnel set up which tracks the page before the goal (/action). The actual urls hit would be /sub1/action then /sub1/success?1234 and /sub2/action then /sub2/success?1234. Why is my table in my dashboard giving me wildly wrong numbers? Have I done something wrong?

• Solving 2D Collision Detection Issues with Relative Velocities

  Imagine you have a situation where two objects are moving parallel to one-another and are both within range to collide with a static wall, like this: A common method used in dynamic collision detection is to loop through all objects in arbitrary order, solve for pair-wise collision detection using relative velocities, and then move the object to the nearest collision, if any. However, in this case, if the red object is checked first against the blue one, it would see that the relative velocity to the blue object is -20 m/s (and would thereby not collide this time frame). Then it would see that the red object would collide with the static wall, and the solution would be: And the red object passes through the blue one. So it appears to be a matter of choosing the right order in which you check collisions; but how can you determine which order is correct? How can this passing through of objects be avoided? Is ignoring relative velocity and considering every object as static during pair-wise checks a better idea for this reason?

My laptp is 6730s compaq . Ther is 4 partitions : 1: where the OS is. NTFS 2: data file. NTFS 3: Empty 20 G space . EXT 3 4: SWAP linux.

At this point it says: No such file `modules-2.6.31-20-server-amd64.tar.bz2' zip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors Module installation failed.   Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

I'd want to implement a Real-time chat for my Rails app but I can't really host the server which handles the sockets. I've tried Faye but it needs a server. I've also heard of pusher but it's limited to 20 users at a time on the chat and I can't really be sure they won't be more. I've thought of irc but I think I can't really embed it into a rails app, maybe it needs sockets... So here's my problem, can I implement a real-time chat without owning a server ?   I have a web site - photo gallery. About 400 photos. Site on Gallery 3. mySQL. Hosted on VPS from myhosting.com (CPU 1792 MHz, 2048 MB RAM). Everything seems to be ok, but there is one big problem. Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?
