  • Add the Recycle Bin to Start Menu in Windows 7

    Have you ever tried to open the Recycle Bin by searching for “recycle bin” in the Start menu search, only to find nothing?  Here’s a quick trick that will let you find the Recycle Bin directly from your Windows Start menu search. The Start menu search may be the best timesaver ever added to Windows.  In fact, we use it so much that it seems painful to manually search for a program when using Windows XP or older versions of Windows.  You can easily find files, folders, programs and more through the Start menu search in both Vista and Windows 7. However, one thing you cannot find is the recycle bin; if you enter this in the start menu search it will not find it. Here’s how to add the Recycle Bin to your Start menu search. What to do To access the Recycle Bin from the Start menu search, we need to add a shortcut to the start menu.  Windows includes a personal Start menu folder, and an All Users start menu folder which all users on the computer can see.  This trick only works in the personal Start menu folder. Open up an Explorer window (Simply click the Computer link in the start menu), click the white part of the address bar, and, enter the following (substitute your username for your_user_name) and hit Enter. C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu Now, right-click in the folder, select New, and then click Shortcut. In the location box, enter the following: explorer.exe shell:RecycleBinFolder When you’ve done this, click Next. Now, enter a name for the shortcut.  You can enter Recycle Bin like the standard shortcut, or you could name it something else such as Trash…if that’s easier for you to remember.  Click Finish when your done. By default it will have a folder icon.  Let’s switch that to the standard Recycle Bin icon.  Right-click on the new shortcut and click Properties. Click Change Icon… Type the following in the “Look for icons in this file:” box, and press the Enter key on your keyboard: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll Now, scroll and find the Recycle Bin icon and click Ok. Click Ok in the previous dialog, and now your Recycle Bin shortcut has the correct icon.   You can even have multiple shortcuts with different names, so when you searched either Recycle Bin or Trash it would come up in the Start menu.  To do that, simply repeat these directions, and enter another name of your choice at the prompt.  Here we have both a Recycle Bin and a Trash icon. Now, when you enter Recycle Bin (or trash, depending on what you chose) in your Start menu search, you will see it at the top of your Start menu.  Simply press Enter or click on the icon to open the Recycle Bin.   This trick will work in Windows Vista too!  Simply follow these same directions, and you can add the Recycle Bin to your Vista Start menu and find it via search. This is a simple trick, but may make it  much easier for you to open your Recycle Bin directly from your Windows Vista or 7 Start menu search.  If you’re using Windows 7, you can also check out our directions on how to Add the Recycle Bin to the Taskbar in Windows 7.   • Sunshine after the iCloud release?

    "Why should I believe them? They're the ones that brought us MobileMe? It was not our finest hour, but we learned a lot." Steve Jobs June 6th 2011 Apple's new cloud service has been met with uncritical excitement by industry commentators.  It is wonderful what a rename can do.  Apple has had a 'cloud' offering for three years called MobileMe, successor to .MAC and  iTools, so iCloud is now the fourth internet service Apple have attempted. If this had been Microsoft, there would have been catcalls all around the blogosphere.  I'll admit that there is a lot more functionality announced for iCloud than MobileMe has ever managed to achieve, but then almost anything has more functionality than MobileMe.  It's an expensive service (£120 a year in the UK, $90 in the states), launched as far back as  June 9, 2008, that has delivered very little and suffered a string of technical problems; the documentation was mainly  a community effort, built up gradually by the frustrated and angry users. It was supposed to synchronise PC Outlook calendars but couldn't manage Microsoft Exchange (Google could, of course). It used WebDAV to allow Windows users to attach to the filestore, but didn't document how to do it. The method for downloading and uploading files to the cloud-based filestore was ridiculously clunky. It allowed you to post photos on a public site, but forgot to include a way of deleting photos. I could go on with the list, but you can explore the many sites that have flourished to inhabit the support-vacuum left by Apple. MobileMe should have had all the bright new clever things announced for iCloud. Apple dropped the ball, and allowed services such as Flickr to fill the void. However, their PR skills are such that, a name-change later (the .ME.com email address remains), it has turned a rout into a victory, and hundreds of earnest bloggers have been extolling Apple's expertise in cloud matters. This must be frustrating for the other cloud providers who have quietly got the technology working right. I wish iCloud well, even though I resent the expensive mess they made of MobileMe. Apple promise that iCloud will sync files, apps, app data, and media across all the different iOS5 devices, Macs, and PCs. It also hopes to sync music across devices, but not video content. They've offered existing MobileMe users free use of the MobileMe service for a year as the product is morphed, and they will be able to transfer to iCloud when it is launched in the autumn.  On June 30, 2012, MobileMe will die, and Apple's iWeb is also soon to join iTools and .MAC in the hereafter. So why get excited about iCloud? That all depends on the level of PC integration. Whereas iOS5 machines will be full participants in the new world of data-sharing (Sorry iPod Touch users) what about .NET libraries? There is talk of synchronising 'My Pictures' libraries with iOS5 and iMac machines, but little more detail as yet. Apple has a lot to prove with iCloud and anyone with actual experience of their past attempts to get into cloud services will be wary.

  • Searching for context in Silverlight applications

    A common behavior in business applications that have developed through the ages is for a user to be able to get information or execute commands in relation to some information/function displayed by right clicking the object in question and popping up a context menu that offers relevant options to choose. The Silverlight Toolkit April 2010 release introduced the context menu object.  This can be added to other UI objects and display options for the user to choose.  The menu items can be enabled or disabled as per your application logic and icons can be added to the menu items to add visual effect.  This post will walk you through how to use the context menu object from the Silverlight Toolkit. Steps: 1. Create a new Silverlight 4 application 2. Copy the following namespace definition to the user control object of the MainPage.xaml file: xmlns:my="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Input.Toolkit"   3. Copy the following XAML into the LayoutRoot grid in MainPage.xaml:          <Border CornerRadius="15" Background="Blue" Width="400" Height="100">             <TextBlock Foreground="White" FontSize="20" Text="Context Menu In This Border...." Add two icon sized images to the ClientBin directory of the web project hosting the Silverlight application, named copy-icon-small.png and paste-icon-small.jpg respectively.  I used copy and paste icons as the names suggest. 5. Add the following code to the class in MainPage.xaml.cs file:         private void CopyMenuItem_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {             MessageBox.Show("Copy selected");         }           private void PasteMenuItem_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)         {             MessageBox.Show("Paste selected");         }   This code adds the event handlers for the menu items defined in step 3. 6. Run the application, right click on the border and select a menu option and see the appropriate message box displayed.   • Question for Vim search and peck typists

    I'm trying to write a Vim tutorial and I'd like to start by dismissing a few misconceptions, as well as giving some recommendations. I don't know if I should dismiss touch-typing as a misconception, or include it as a recommended prerequisite. At the time I learned the editor, I had already been touch typing for a couple of years, so I have absolutely no idea what would be the experience of a two-fingered typist in Vim. Are you a vim two-fingered typist? what has your experience been like? EDIT: I'm not sure if my question was clear enough. Maybe it's my fault, I don't know. I get mixed replies and other questions (why do you write this? what does one have to do with the other?), instead of empirical info (I don't touch type and it's been (fine|hell)). Some programmers touch-type others search and peck. In the middle, there's Vim which requires a certain affinity with keys to do various operations. I am a touch typist and I have no clue what my experience would have been like with the editor if I wasn't. I can't honestly picture myself pecking some of these combos. But like I said, I don't know what it is like. Before telling someone to start using Vim, I'd like to know if I should dismiss touch-typing as a misconceived requirement. So, I'll rephrase the question, have you felt that not being a touch-typist has impeded on your experience with Vim?

Zoo I want to go Zoo. Noodle Noodle can be a very very very very very very very very very very very long, but still is one line. Chip Don't eat so many chip. Orange Orange is great, not Apple plx. Noodle Water Drinking water is boring. The first file is a "key" of second file. In the second file, the first word is the key of each line. Each key and sentence in second file ONLY have one line. The Second File have many lines with key, but not all the key is shown on file1, but file1's key MUST in the second file. How can I get the result like this: (Need to sort by the key from File1) Apple, Apple I love eat Apple. Orange, Orange is great, not Apple plx. Banana, I hate Banana. Noodle, can be a very very very very very very very very very very very long, but still is one sentence. Chip, Don't eat so many chip.

  • How can I edit an exe's resources (File Description, Icon, etc.) using a command line utility?

    The whole story: I have created a fancy .NET program which has an installer created by the Visual Studio Installer (VSI). The VSI creates 2 files (setup.exe and MyProgramSetup.msi). I understand the reasons for both files being needed, however, I only want to distribute a SINGLE executable installer to users. I do not want them to see 2 files and have to choose between them. In order to do this I have merged the 2 files into a self-extracting archive using IExpress (as seen in this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/535966/merge-msi-and-exe). This works well, however, the self-extracting archive that gets created has an ugly icon and confusing file info (the File Description is "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor" with 43 black spaces after it). I need to replace the icon with my custom one and change some of the file properties like "Description", "Company", etc. I would like to have this automatically done as a build step so having a program which is a command line/console utility would be great. I've searched for a while now and can only find one program which does exactly what I want (ResourceTuner Console: http://www.heaventools.com/command-line_resource_editor.htm) but it costs an arm and a leg and my budget is $0. Does anyone know a better way to achieve what I want, or know of a program which can replace an executable's resources without having to use a GUI? By the way, I have also tried "SiComponents Resource Builder 3" which can't even open the executable, and "Julien Audo's ResEdit" which just crashes when I execute the command: "resedit.exe -convert "Modified Resources.rc" "MyProgramSetup.exe"

  • iPhone multitouch - Some touches dispatch touchesBegan: but not touchesMoved:

    I'm developing a multitouch application. One touch is expected to move, and I need to track its position. For all other touches, I need to track their beginnings and endings, but their movement is less critical. Sometimes, when 3 or more touches are active, my UIView does not receive touchesMoved: events for the moving touch. This problem is intermittent, and can always be reproduced after a few attempts: Touch the screen with 2 fingers. Touch the screen with another finger, and move this finger around. The moving finger always dispatches touchesBegan: and touchesEnded:, but sometimes does not dispatch any touchesMoved: events. Whenever the moving touch does not dispatch touchesMoved: events, I can force it to dispatch touchesMoved: if I move one of the other touches. This seems to "force" every touch to recheck its position, and I successfully receive a touchesMoved: event. However, this is clumsy. This bug is reproducible on both the iPhone 2G and 3GS models. My question is: How do I ensure that my moving touch dispatches touchesMoved: events? Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I've spent few fruitless days searching the web for answers. I found a post describing how to sync touch events with the VBL: http://www.71squared.com/2009/04/maingameloop-changes/ . However, this has not solved the problem. I really don't know how to proceed. Any help is appreciated!

Ideally it would meet these requirements: Displays a 3D object in the center of the screen like a cube Maps a texture to the cube surfaces Should move the camera around the cube as you drag your finger Should zoom the camera in and out on the cube by pinching Optionally has a background behind the cube that wraps around the back of the camera.(for example this could create the effect of the cube being in space) Has anyone seen one or more examples that can do these or at least render the cube with the texture?

    I'm researching remote control testing for an app that'll be installed on the new iPod Touch and can't tell for certain from everything that I've read whether or not an installed app can or can't open any ports for remote test instructions (that's a mouthful : ) We created something like this for the Android using adb port forwarding and telnet, and it worked really well. Is there any chance something similar could be done on an iPhone or iPod without jailbreaking??

    Hi, I'm consistently seeing the same message sent in as a crash report from users of an app. It's clear that an object is being over-released but I'm unable to replicate it and I'm looking for tips on tracing the source of it. Does the fact that this nearly exact same crash report is coming in repeatedly mean that it's the same object that's being over released, or because this is referring to the autorelease pool mean it could be any object? Does the reference to _CFRelease mean it's a Core Foundation object that's being over released?

    Hello I have a question concerning translating data from a CSV into XML or JSON where it is essential to preserve the heirarchy of the data. For example, if I have CSV data like this: type,brand,country,quantity apple,golden_delicious,english,1 apple,golden_delicious,french,2 apple,cox,,4 apple,braeburn,,1 banana,,carribean,6 banana,,central_america,7 clememtine,,,3 What I want is to preserve hierarchy in the XML so that I get something like: <fruit> <type = "apple"> <brand = "golden_delicious"> <country = "english" quantity = "1"> <country = "french" quantity = "2"> </brand> <brand = "cox"> <quantity = "4"> </brand> <brand = "braeburn"> <quantity = "1"> </brand> </type> <type = "banana"> <country = "carribean" quantity = "6"> <country = "central_america" quantity = "7"> </type> <type = "clementine"> <quantity = "3"> </type> <fruit /> Is it best to try to use JAXP or to convert the above into a table simply of parent, child and then writing the data to an array of strings for processing,? Like this: parent,child fruit,apple apple,golden_delicious golden_delicious,english golden_delicious,french english,1 french,2 apple,cox cox,4 apple,braeburn braeburn,1 And so on.   • How can I re-open the TrueCrypt window after it's been closed?

    I installed TrueCrypt 7.1 Standard 64-bit on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit. After finding the application in the dash I dragged it's icon onto the Unity launcher. I then clicked that icon and TrueCrypt's main window opened. I mounted my encrypted file/volume and then closed the window to do some work. To re-open the TrueCrypt window I would normally click the small blue TrueCrypt icon that appears on the top panel. In Ubuntu 11.10 that icon is no longer there. I receive a message ("TrueCrypt is already running.") if I click on the TrueCrypt icon in the launcher. How can I re-open the TrueCrypt window after it's been closed in Ubuntu 11.10?

  • Can an app in opt/extras install themeable icons in /usr/share

    My application Variety Wallpaper Changer runs from /opt/extras and uses an indicator icon. I would like to make this indicator icon theme-specific. As far as I understand the standard way is to install named icons into /usr/share/icons with xdg-icon-resource at installation time (Am I right about this?). I have two questions regarding this: Variety installs and runs from /opt/extras.ubuntu.com. Is it acceptable for it to install icons in /usr/share using xdg-icon-resource or is there something else I can do to have theme-specific icons without special-casing themes and dynamically selecting the icon in the code? Variety is packaged using Quickly (and I'm myself a newbie at packaging) - how can I configure it to install theme-specific named icons at installation time?

Our senior programmers have knowledge of how to do this, Although - I would like to know how you could go from converting a eLearning course from Flash into a application for Mac and PC, looking similar to Garageband's music lessons? What programming language was used to create Garageband on Mac? What is the best way to create a application that will work on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Touch etc, Rather then using flash and Actionscript to create online based applications, that will only work in a browser on Mac and PC?   • opengl paint program based on Apple's 'glPaint' on a white background - how to blend?

    Trying to write a simple paint program for iPhone, and I'm using Apple's glPaint sample as a guide. The only problem is, painting doesn't work on a white background, since white + colour = white. I've tried different blending functions, but haven't been able to hit on the right combination of settings and/or brushes to make this work. I've seen similar posts about this problem but no answers. Does anyone know how this might work?
