• Backup AWS Dynamodb to S3

  It has been suggested on Amazon docs http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ among other places, that you can backup your dynamodb tables using Elastic Map Reduce, I have a general understanding of how this could work but I couldn't find any guides or tutorials on this, So my question is how can I automate dynamodb backups (using EMR)? So far, I think I need to create a "streaming" job with a map function that reads the data from dynamodb and a reduce that writes it to S3 and I believe these could be written in Python (or java or a few other languages). Any comments, clarifications, code samples, corrections are appreciated.

• Jquery .Show() .Hide() not working as expected

  I'm trying to use the show and hide to display a different set of select options when a certain report type is selected. I have a couple problems with this: The .show .hide only execute properly if I pass params, slow fast, in the the first result of my conditional statement. If I take out the params or pass params in both results, only one select shows and it never changes.. here's is the code that currently kind of works. if ($('#ReportType').val() == 'PbuseExport') { $('#PbuseServices').show('fast'); $('#ReportServiceDropdown').hide('fast'); } else { $('#PbuseServices').hide(); $('#ReportServiceDropdown').show(); } After i've used this control I am taken to a differnt page. When I use the control again, it reatins the original search values and repopulates the control. Then again I only want to show one select option if a certain report is chosen.. This works correctly if the report type I originally searched on is not the "PbuseExport". If I searched on the report type "PbuseExport", then both selects show on the screen, and only until I change the report type does it show only one select. I know this probably isn't very clear.. • How to set the VirtualDocumentRoot based on the files within

  I'm trying to set up Apache to use the VirtualDocumentRoot directive but my sites aren't all exactly the same. Most of the sites have a drupal folder which should be the root but there are a few really old drupal sites, a few rails sites, some django sites, etc. that want the Document root to be / or some other folder. Is there a way to set up VirtualDocumentRoot based on a conditional or is there a way to use RewriteRule/Cond to detect that / is the incorrect folder if there is a drupal folder or a public folder? Here's what I have so far: <VirtualHost *:80> # Wildcard ServerAlias, this is the default vhost if no specific vhost matches first. • After Trigger execute before constraint check in oracle

  Hi, I have After Insert/Update trigger on Table T1 which get the referential data for Col1 from T2 and does some work and insert it into another table. The col1 is FK to Table T2. When user insert the incorrect or non existing value into the Col1 and if trigger is disabled I am getting constraint error that is fine. But when trigger is enabled and user insert the wrong value in Col1 trigger is getting fired and shows the 'no data found' error message. Actually I am expecting the table to throw constraint error, but trigger is throwing it. Please let me know your comments about this trigger behaviour.

• Migrating from Clearcase LT (UCM) to Subversion

  I am sure this question has been asked hundreds of time and been responded equally. I am trying to get a clear picture of my effort before I embark on this. I want to know if SVNImporter or any other tool out there helps me migrate my UCM VOBs to Subversion repos. I dont mind losing some history. Also please share your strategies if there are no tools out there. I was told by someone that I would have to rebase my view with each baseline from oldest to the newest and incrementally commit that code into Subversion. While this seems to be plain and simple but considering the number of VOBs we have here, this would be a gigantic task for us to do manually. Is there any script out there that I can use to automate this process. Comments please!!! Thanks Gnan

• How do I stop Safari from caching my Servlet response?

  I'm having trouble testing a web app with Safari. My app returns wave audio data. The problem happens when I change the application and hit it again from Safari. Safari caches the original response so no matter how many times I hit refresh it seems like I've not updated anything. I can almost get around this using force refresh with Firefox but because I'm having trouble generating the wave headers using the javax.sound API Firefox only plays the first second of audio returned. A few weeks ago I tried setting the HTTP header in my servlet to prevent caching but I don't think I was setting it correctly. (What is the header for browser cache control?) This is becoming a real pain and I'm looking for any ideas, comments, or alternative approaches. I'm getting ready to try again but I figured I'd ask here in the interim to see if someone can provide help.

• Use of LOC to determine project size

  How many lines of code (LOC) does it take to be considered a large project? How about for just one person writing it? I know this metric is questionable, but there is a significant difference, for a single developer, between 1k and 10k LOC. I typically use space for readability, especially for SQL statements, and I try to reduce the amount of LOC for maintenance purpose to follow as many best practice as i can. For example, I created a unified diff of the code I modified today, and it was over 1k LOC (including comments and blank lines). Is "modified LOC" a better metric? I have ~2k LOC, so it's surprising I modified 1k. I guess rewriting counts as both a deletion and addition which doubles the stats.

• connecting to a webservice from android - AsyncTask or Service?

  I'm writing an android app that will connect to a REST/JSON webservice. Users will be retrieving information, uploading comments, downloading and uploading images etc. I know that I shouldn't keep all this network communication in the Activity/UI thread, as it will cause ANRs. What I'm confused about is whether I should use an AsyncTask or a Service with "manual" threading to accomplish this; With a Service, I'd simply have a public method for each method in the webservice's API. I'd then implement threading within each of these methods. If I used an AsyncTask, I would create a helper class that defined AsyncTasks for each method in the webservice's API. Which method is preferred? Interaction with the webservice will only happen while the user is in the Activity. Once they switch to another application, or exit the program, there is no need for communication with the webservice.

• What causes subprocess.call to output blank file when attempting db export with mysqldump?

  I am having some problems using subprocess.call to export a database using mysqldump. I'm using Python 3.1 installed on Windows 7. from time import gmtime, strftime import subprocess DumpDir = "c:/apps/sqlbackup/"; DumpFile = "mysqldump-" + strftime("%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S", gmtime()) + ".sql"; params = [r"mysqldump --user root --password=mypassword --force --flush-privileges --compress --comments mydatabase --result-file=" + DumpDir + DumpFile]; subprocess.call(params, shell=True); The above code causes a blank file to be created in the DumpDir. I've tried getting python to print the command so I can test it via the CMD prompt using: print(subprocess.list2cmdline(params)); If I paste the output to the CMD prompt and execute it, everything works fine. Any ideas? I'm new to Python, so I am sure the answer is simple but I've tried so many variations to get this working that I just can't figure this out.

  I'm working on a tutorial to build a media player in Silverlight and am trying to wire up an EventHandler to the timer.Tick event of a DispatchTimer object so that the time of the video is synced with a Slider object. The sample code is in C# and I can't for the life of me figure out the proper syntax in VB.NET with RaiseEvent and/or Handles to wire up the event. Below is the relevant C# code. • Asp.net mvc 2 and twitter authenticaton

  I am using OAuth (linq2twitter and DotNetOpenAuth) to allow a user to post comments via their twitter account. So when you do the authorization twitter does a callback, so the way linq2twitter does it is to set the callback to the page that did the req. So if the req came from blah.com\twit it will redirect to blah.com\twit. This leads me to have code like this: public ActionResult Twit(){ var qString = Request.QueryString; if (qString.Count <= 0){ //do authorization } else{ //do authentication } } So I would like to split it to this(seemingly both of these calls are done via GET): public ActionResult Twit(){} public ActionResult Twit(string token1, string token2){} When I have this currently I get the .net yellow screen complaining about ambiguous action methods. How do I route this?

• Is wrapping new within the constructor good or bad?

  I watched John Resig's Best Practices in JavaScript Library Design presentation; one slide suggested "tweaking" the object constructor so it instantiates itself. function jQuery(str, con) { if (window === this) { return new jQuery(str, con); } // ... } With that, new jQuery("#foo") becomes jQuery("# foo"). I thought it was rather interesting, but I haven't written a constructor like that in my own code. A little later I read a post here on SO. (Sorry, I don't remember which or I'd supply a link. I will update the question if I can find it again.) One of the comments said it was bad practice to hide new from the programmer like that, but didn't go into details. My question is, it the above generally considered good, bad, or indifferent, and why?

• Rails, search item in different model?

  Hi Everyone, I have a kase model which I am using a simple search form in. The problem I am having is some kases are linked to companies through a company model, and people through a people model. • jQuery show submit button on input field click

  Hi, I'm trying to have a comment input field that will show the submit button on a dynamically created form when you click on the input field. Similar to how facebook comments work. When you click on the input field the submit button appears and when you click off it disappears. All the comment input id's are comment_1 etc and the submit button id's are submit_1 etc. I've tried this, jQuery("#[id^='comment_']").live('click',function(event){ if(jQuery("#[id^='comment_']").val() == ""){ jQuery("#[id^='submit_']").hide(); } else { jQuery("#[id^='submit_']").show(); } }); And that won't work for some reason.   I always thought that if you didn't implement a heartbeat, there was no way to know if one side of a TCP connection died unexpectedly. If the process was just killed on one side and didn't exit gracefully, there was no way for the socket to send FIN or let the other side know that it was closed. (See some of the comments here for example http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=566568 ) But there is a stock order server that I connect to that has a new "cancel all orders on disconnect feature" that cancels live orders if the client dis-connects. It works even when I kill the process on my end, and there is definitely no heartbeat from my app to it. So how is it able to detect when I've killed the process? My app is running on Windows Server 2003 and the order server is on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10. Does Windows detect that the process associated with the socket is no longer alive and send the FIN?

• Code/Approach Golf: Find row in text file with too many columns

  Given a text file that is supposed to contain 10 tab-delimited columns (i.e. 9 tabs), I'd like to find all rows that have more than 10 columns (more than 9 tabs). Each row ends with CR-LF. Assume nothing about the data, field widths, etc, other than the above. Comments regarding approach, and/or working code would be extremely appreciated. Bonus for printing line numbers of offending lines as well. Thanks in advance!

• dangling pointer, reason for value change after free()?

  In the following code segment, after free(x), why does y becomes 0? As per my understanding, the memory in the heap that was being pointed to by x, and is still being pointed by y, hasn't been allocated to someone else, so how can it change to 0? And moreover, I don't think it is free(x) that changed it to 0. • Orbital equations, and power required to run them

  Due to a discussion on the SO IRC today, I'm curious about orbital mechanics, and The equations needed to solve orbital problems The computing power required to solve complex problems The question in particular is calculating when the Earth will plow into the Sun (or vice versa, depending on the frame of reference). I suspect that all the gravitational pulls within our solar system may need to be calculated, which makes me wonder what type of computer cluster is required, or can this be done on a single box? • Javascript iframe caching issue

  I hava an iframe which loads some javascript via javascript. In internet explorer only, this works if and only if IE has a cached copy of the javascript. This means that reloading the page (or otherwise triggering the script to run again, if it's stuck in a function or whatever) will cause this code to work, otherwise it will not. In particular, the document.write call fails to happen. • Wordpress : display all articles of a month on one page

  I would like to change the default behavior of Wordpress regarding the number of articles displayed on a same page to be the following : when displaying the home page, the 10 most recent articles should be displayed, 10 being the setting which can be changed through the admin panel (posts_per_page) when displaying the articles of a specific month (given through the URL like this : ?m=200906&order=ASC, I'd like to display on the same page all articles of this month (in other words, I don't want to have to browse through articles using previous entries or next entries. EDIT : I forgot something else I'd like to change : On the page where all articles of the specified month are displayed, I would like to display the comments for each article. Is this possible to do ? How ?
