  • What is the best way to add categories to posts - Ruby on Rails blog...

    - by bgadoci
I am new to Ruby and Rails so bear with me please. I have created a very simple blog application with both posts and comments. Everything works great. My next question regarding adding categories. I am wondering the best way to do this. As I can't see too far in front of me yet when it comes to Rails I thought I would ask. To be clear, I would like that a single post can have multiple categories and a category can have multiple posts. Is the best way to do this to create a 'categories' table and then use the posts and categories models to do has_many :posts, has_many :categories? Would I also then set the routes.rb such that posts are embedded under categories? Or is there an easier way by simply adding a category column to the existing posts table? (in which case I would imagine having multiple categories would be difficult).

  • bind event handler on keydown listen function JavaScript jQuery

    - by user1644123
I am trying to bind a handler to an event. The event is a keydown function. The handler will listen for hit variables to produce one of two conditions. The 1st condition (odd number of hits) will perform 1 function, the 2nd (even number of hits) will perform another function. To elaborate, the 1st function will scroll to one element, the 2nd will scroll to another element. My syntax may be the wrong approach, but it works for the 1st condition, but not the 2nd. I think I have the conditional statement in the wrong place. How can I rewrite this to work as intended? Thank you kindly, in advance! $(document).keydown(function(e) { switch (e.which) { case 37: break; case 38: break; case 39: break; case 40: //bottom arrow key var hits = 0; if (hits % 2 !== 0) { $('#wrap').animate({ scrollTop: $("#scrollToHere").offset().top }, 2800); } else { $('#wrap').animate({ scrollTop: $("#scroll2ToHere").offset().top }, 2800); } hits++; return false; break; } })? *I moved "var hits = 0;" to the top, but it only works! But is there a way I can reset the whole thing after every two hits? I want to reset because when there is a bug and if I press a 3rd time it scrolls to the very top of the page, where there is no element to make it scroll to the top. Why would it scroll to the top of the page if I never scripted it to do so?? *

  • How many address fields would you use for a UK database?

    - by Draemon
Address records are probably used in most database, but I've seen a number of slightly different sets of fields used to store them. The number of fields seems to vary from 3-7, and sometimes all fields are simple labelled address1..addressN, other times given specific meaning (town, city, etc). This is UK specific, though I'm open to comments about the rest of the world too. Here you need the first line of the address (actually just the number) and the post code to identify the address - everything else is mostly an added bonus. I'm currently favouring: Address 1 Address 2 Address 3 Town County Post Code We could add Country if we ever needed it (unlikely). What do you think? Is this too little, too much?

    - by Prof Plum
I am try to use Sandcastle Help File Builder, but can't quite get it to work. Here is what I have done: 1) installed the program; works like normal 2) enabled xml in the project I want documentation for that gets generated in the /bin 3) created a new sandcastle help file project 4) added the C# project as (its a WCF service in case that matters) a documentation service 5) ran the "build" to generate the help file 6) went to "documentation"/"view help file"/"view help file" in the GUI 7) The file opens and contains the appopriate "folders", but every page says "Navigation to the webpage was canceled" I have seen the xml file in the /bin and it contains all of my /// comments, so why are they not showing up in the help file? Any ideas?

  • Android - Temporal & Ancestral Navigation with ViewPager & Fragments

    - by rascuache
I'm trying to work out the best way to implement the 'ancestral' and 'temporal' navigation (utilising the up button and back buttons), for a music player I'm working on. Currently, the user is presented with a viewpager, and can page between three main fragments (ArtistMain, AlbumMain and SongMain). Upon choosing an item inside that view, a fragment transaction occurs, and the viewpager goes out of view, replaced by a new fragment (AlbumSub, Songsub or player, depending on where the user came from). The user can then navigate deeper, until a song is chosen, and then they are taken to the 'player' screen. I guess the question is: How do I implement all of this conditional navigation? I'm fairly new to android and programming in general, and I just can't seem to come up with an efficient way to achieve this. At the moment, as each fragment is brought into view, the app is checking to see where the user just came from, and then determines where the user should be taken if back or home is called. This means I have a booleans like "fromArtistMain", "fromAlbumSub", and I'm checking for things like "fromSongSub && fromPlayer".. it's all turning into a bit of a mess. I've drawn a diagram (in paint, sorry!!), to depict the navigation I'm trying to achieve. The yellow represents the 'up' button press, the red is the 'back' button press, and blue is just normal navigation. The green arrows are meant to represent the view paging: Any advice is welcome. It might take something really simple that I've just overlooked. Thanks for your time.

  • Immutable Dot Net strings

    - by klork
I usually define my string variables in vb.net as Dim f_sName as string=String.Empty f_sName = "foo" Given the immutable nature of strings in .net, is there a better way to initialize strings and deal with the "Variable 'f_sName ' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime." warning? Also for classes that do not have constructors which accept no arguments such as System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream, what is the best way to define and initialize a variable of that type? All comments are highly appreciated. Thanks

  • How can I reorder columns in a DataGridView?

    - by Luiscencio
    so I fill my DGV with some data and set some columns invisible: var part = inventory.espiromex_product.Where(p => p.descriptionsmall == cmbMainP.Text).First().partnumberp; dtgAssy.DataSource = inventory.espiromex_productsub.Where(p => p.partnumberp == part); dtgAssy.Columns["idproductsub"].Visible = false; dtgAssy.Columns["partnumberp"].Visible = false; dtgAssy.Columns["partnumbersubp"].Visible = true; dtgAssy.Columns["quantity"].Visible = true; dtgAssy.Columns["comments"].Visible = true; dtgAssy.Columns["assemblyno"].Visible = false; dtgAssy.Columns["assemblynodesc"].Visible = false; dtgAssy.Columns["uomid"].Visible = true; dtgAssy.Columns["subassemblylevelnumber"].Visible = false; dtgAssy.Columns["scrappercent"].Visible = true; this is just fine but columns are sorted Alphabetically, How can I reorder columns programmatically? note that inventory is an Entitie and I am using Linq to Entities.

  • Code Review "ToDo" Follow Up Items

    - by Blake Blackwell
I am trying to institute code reviews at my company, and recently we had our first code review meeting. During the meeting, several positive suggestions were made and I added TODO comments in my code for following up. After reading suggestions on here on best practices for code reviews, I would like to follow up on all the items I corrected at the start of the next meeting. Is there a way to add a similar type of comment to the code such as FOLLOWUP so that I can quickly highlight through those code segments in the next meeting?

  • What division operator symbol would you pick?

    - by Mackenzie
I am currently designing and implementing a small programming language as an extra-credit project in a class I'm taking. My problem is that the language has three numeric types: Long, Double, and Fraction. Fractions can be written in the language as proper or improper fractions (e.g. "2 1/3" or "1/2"). This fact leads to problems such as "2/3.5" (Long/Double) and "2/3"(Long/Long) not being handled correctly by the lexer. The best solution that I see is to change the division operator. So far, I think "\" is the best solution since "//" starts comments. Would you pick "\", if you were designing the language? Would you pick something else? If so, what? Note: changing the way fractions are written is not possible. Thanks in advance for your help,

  • Newbie PHP coding problem: header function (maybe, I need someone to check my code)

    - by Haskella
Hi, consider the following PHP code: <?php $searchsport = $_REQUEST['sport']; $sportarray = array( "Football" => "Fb01", "Cricket" => "ck32", "Tennis" => "Tn43", ); header("Location: ".$sportarray[$searchsport].".html"); //directs user to the corresponding page they searched if ($searchsport == NULL) { header("Location: youtypednothing.html"); //directs user to a page I've set up to warn them if they've entered nothing } else { header("Location: sportdoesnotexist.html"); //if sport isn't in my root, a warning will appear } ?> I think the code comments are self-explanatory, basically when I type Tennis on my form.html it will send data to this php file and process and direct me to Tn43.html which is my tennis page. Unfortunately, it doesn't work and I really want to know why... (I know I've made some huge silly mistake). PS: Is header the right function to use when doing some redirecting?

  • Avoiding sorting in NSDictionary

    - by RVN
I was using NSDictionary and i observed that the objects in the dictionary are sorted automatically with respect to the keys, so my question is how to avoid this sorting , any flag available to set it off, so i get the object in same order i entered. i know u may be thinking what difference it makes in dictionary since we retrieve the value with respect to key, but i am first getting allKeys from which i receive Array of keys , this order is what i need it to be in the order of how i entered just as in NSArray. give your comments if the question is not clear. Thanks

  • How do I understand what the following means?

    - by Runner
Quoted from here: if (to_end) { /* If we want to scroll to the end, including horizontal scrolling, * then we just create a mark with right gravity at the end of the * buffer. It will stay at the end unless explicitely moved with * gtk_text_buffer_move_mark. */ gtk_text_buffer_create_mark (buffer, "end", &iter, FALSE); /* Add scrolling timeout. */ return g_timeout_add (50, (GSourceFunc) scroll_to_end, textview); } else { /* If we want to scroll to the bottom, but not scroll horizontally, * then an end mark won't do the job. Just create a mark so we can * use it with gtk_text_view_scroll_mark_onscreen, we'll position it * explicitely when needed. Use left gravity so the mark stays where * we put it after inserting new text. */ gtk_text_buffer_create_mark (buffer, "scroll", &iter, TRUE); /* Add scrolling timeout. */ return g_timeout_add (100, (GSourceFunc) scroll_to_bottom, textview); } Though there are quite a few lines of comments, I still don't understand the logic in it,especially, what's the relation between an mark and the position of scroll bar?

  • msbuild/clickonce publish files generated during the build

    - by Anonym
As a part of my build process I generate some files that should be included when creating a clickonce deployment. Here is a blog post of someone telling you how to include items that's not part of the project. However, as someone mentions in the comments of that blogpost, it won't update the deploymentmanifest when you do it in the "BeforePublish" task and the files won't get downloaded - it works fine if you do it in the "BeforeBuild" task though. This gives me a chicken and egg problem as I have to perform the build first to generate the files I want included.. Does anyone have a solution for this ? (p.s. at the moment generating the clickonce deployment using mage.exe is not an option, it have to be done using the Publish target)

  • Log4j - Logging to multiple log files based on the project modules

    - by Veera
Consider this scenario: I have a project with two modules and one common module as below (the package structure): com.mysite.moduleone com.mysite.moduletwo com.mysite.commonmodule In the above, the commonmodule classes can be used by other two modules. The question: I need to configureLog4J such a way that the log messages from moduleone and moduletwo goes to different log file. I can always do this using using category. But the real problem is when I want to log the messages from the commonmodule also. So, when the commonmodule classes are called from moduleone the commonmodule log messages should go to the moduleone log file. If the commonmodule is accesse from moduletwo the commonmodule log messages should go to moduletwo log file. Is it possible to configure Log4J in this fashion? Any comments? PS: I think I made my question clear. If any confusion, leave a comment, wil try to clear it. :)

  • ASP.NET AsyncPostBackTrigger disables button's OnClick function???

    - by hahuang65
I saw another post like this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1795621/asyncpostbacktrigger-disables-buttons But I don't really know what to make of it. The accepted answer was poorly typed. Basically, I have a button with an OnClick function. I also have a UpdatePanel, with is AsyncPostBackTrigger set to that same button. It seems that if I do this, my Button no longer does ANYTHING. I guess it's because I have a Page_Load() event... Can anyone explain why this is? And how should I set up my webpage if I can't use the Page_Load() function? Oh and if I put my Button in a UpdatePanel, it also won't do anything, probably because of the same reason. This is a section of my code: <asp:FileUpload id="FileUploadControl" runat="server" /> <asp:Button runat="server" id="UploadButton" text="Upload" OnClick="uploadClicked" /> <br /><br /> <asp:Label runat="server" id="StatusLabel" text="Upload status: " /> <br /> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel2" runat="server" updatemode="Conditional" > <ContentTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="songList" runat="server" /> </ContentTemplate> <Triggers> <asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="RefreshButton" /> </Triggers> </asp:UpdatePanel> Thanks in advance.

  • Multiple errors while adding searching to app

    - by Thijs
Hi, I'm fairly new at iOS programming, but I managed to make a (in my opinion quite nice) app for the app store. The main function for my next update will be a search option for the app. I followed a tutorial I found on the internet and adapted it to fit my app. I got back quite some errors, most of which I managed to fix. But now I'm completely stuck and don't know what to do next. I know it's a lot to ask, but if anyone could take a look at the code underneath, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! // // RootViewController.m // GGZ info // // Created by Thijs Beckers on 29-12-10. // Copyright 2010 __MyCompanyName__. • DailyRollingFileHandler ---- Files should be rotated on a daily basis

    - by nag
We have a requirment which requires to have an Handler that is extended from Java logging and allows to have the files rotated on daily basis. Currently Java util logging do have the support of rotation based on file size by using File Handler. It doesnt support rotation on daily basis. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6350749 Mentioned handler seems is not promising .http://www.x4juli.org/api/org/x4juli/handlers/RollingFileHandler.html So , what we are looking is for such an appender that allows daily rotation . We would like to write such handler and which is the appropriate handler to extend for ... StreamHandler or FileHandler ? And other questions are , is there way we can configure 2 different files for a single handler say FileHandler say for eg , we would like some kind of messages need to be captured in one file and other messages in other file. Would appreciate for any comments.

  • Autmatically create table on MySQL server based on date?

    - by Anthony
Is there an equivalent to cron for MySQL? I have a PHP script that queries a table based on the month and year, like: SELECT * FROM data_2010_1 What I have been doing until now is, every time the script executes it does a query for the table, and if it exists, does the work, if it doesn't it creates the table. I was wondering if I can just set something up on the MySQL server itself that will create the table (based on a default table) at the stroke of midnight on the first of the month. Update Based on the comments I've gotten, I'm thinking this isn't the best way to achieve my goal. So here's two more questions: If I have a table with thousands of rows added monthly, is this potentially a drag on resources? If so, what is the best way to partition this table, since the above is verboten? What are the potential problems with my home-grown method I originally thought up?

  • Why is this HTTP request continually looping?

    - by alex
    I'm probably overlooking something really obvious here. Comments are in to help explain any library specific code. public function areCookiesEnabled() { $random = 'cx67ds'; // set cookie cookie::set('test_cookie', $random); // try and get cookie, if not set to false $testCookie = cookie::get('test_cookie', false); $cookiesAppend = '?cookies=false'; // were we able to get the cookie equal ? $cookiesEnabled = ($testCookie === $random); // if $_GET['cookies'] === false , etc try and remove $_GET portion if ($this->input->get('cookies', false) === 'false' AND $cookiesEnabled) { url::redirect(str_replace($cookiesAppend, '', url::current())); // redirect return false; } // all else fails, add a $_GET[] if ( ! $cookiesEnabled) { url::redirect(url::current().$cookiesAppend); } return $cookiesEnabled; }

  • An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

    - by peter
I am working with a commercial application which is throwing a SocketException with the message, An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host This happens with a socket connection between client and server. The connection is alive and well, and heaps of data is being transferred, but it then becomes disconnected out of nowhere. Has anybody seen this before? What could the causes be? I can kind of guess a few causes, but also is there any way to add more into this code to work out what the cause could be? Any comments / ideas are welcome. Thanks.

  • Thoughts on try-catch blocks

    - by John Boker
What are your thoughts on code that looks like this: public void doSomething() { try { // actual code goes here } catch (Exception ex) { throw; } } The problem I see is the actual error is not handled, just throwing the exception in a different place. I find it more difficult to debug because i don't get a line number where the actual problem is. So my question is why would this be good? ---- EDIT ---- From the answers it looks like most people are saying it's pointless to do this with no custom or specific exceptions being caught. That's what i wanted comments on, when no specific exception is being caught. I can see the point of actually doing something with a caught exception, just not the way this code is.

  • How atomic *should* I make an Ajax form?

    - by b. e. hollenbeck
I have some web forms that I'm bringing over with AJAX, and as I was dealing with the database on the back end, I thought that it might be easier to just handle each input on the form atomically with AJAX, saving the form in 'real time' as the user edits it. The forms are ~20 fields of administrative settings. Would this create massive overhead with the app, cause it to be error-prone, or is this a feasible idea? Of course, contingent operations (like a checkbox that then requires a text entry) would be held until the textbox gained and lost focus. Comments?

  • Posting comment with ajax and jquery

    - by Steve
I want to display the posted comment once the user comments. Just to add it under all of them as facebook does. I have this: // Interceptamos el evento submit $('#CommentAddForm').submit(function() { alert("entro"); alert($(this).attr('action')); // Enviamos el formulario usando AJAX $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: $(this).attr('action'), data: $(this).serialize(), // Mostramos un mensaje con la respuesta de PHP success: function(data) { $('#result').html(//????????????); } }); return false; }); But i don't know very well how it works and i dont know what should i write in the line $('#result').html(//????????????); The variable URL contains the route which inserts the comment in the DB. And it works well. Any idea? Thanks. By the way, i have been reading this answer: Ajax/jQuery Comment System But i still don't get it.
