• Build and test on 2.2.1 iPod Touch with XCode 3.2.2?

  I've just installed Xcode 3.2.2 with iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 (Snow Leopard) This version of Xcode didn't come with any iPhone SDKs older than 3.0. But I want to create an app that runs on all devices from iPhone OS 2.2.1 - 3.1.3. I managed to add older SDKs into Xcode by downloading iPhone 3.1.3 with Xcode 3.1.4 and installing each 2.x SDK from the 'Packages' folder in the .dmg. So now I can select 2.2.1 as 'iPhone OS Deployment Target' and the 'Base SDK' as 3.1.3, and the app will build (thus letting me use 3.1.3 APIs with conditional coding whilst still running on 2.2.1 devices). But the problem is the app will not install and run on my 2.2.1 iPod Touch. Instead, Xcode tells me 'No provisioned iPhone OS device is connected'. If I bring up the Organizer, in the left column, the iPod Touch has an orange sphere next to it, instead of green, and clicking on this reveals: 'The version of iPhone OS on “iPod touch” is too old for use with this version of the iPhone SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below' I'm not sure how to get this version of the SDK to support 2.2.1. (It needs to be this download of XCode/iPhone SDK because I also want it to be a universal binary so it runs on the iPad with a minimum of fuss).

  I just watched a video of Douglas Crockford's presentation about his 2009 book JavaScript: The Good Parts. In the video, he explains that the following block is dangerous because it produces silent errors: return { ok: false }; And that it should actually be written like this (emphasising that although seemingly identical the behavioural difference is crucial): return { ok: false }; You can see his comments around 32 minutes into the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQVTIJBZook&feature=player_embedded#!&start=1920 I have not heard this before, and was wondering if this rule still applies or if this requirement in syntax has been overcome by JavaScript developments since this statement was made.   Hi guys! I have a month of free time and I've decided to launch my own website. It's going to be big and have dymanic content where different users with different roles can perform modifications to the site. Place comments, rate stores, list items, etc. This sound like a perfect opportunity for me to expand my horizons and learn a PHP Framework. I've used PHP bare bones before but nothing too complex. As of now, do you think Kohana is a mature framework to use? I've used Zend in the past for a course in Uni but it sucked horribly, I was new to the MVC model, but Zend had pretty much zero workable tutorials and guides for newbies. That's why I hated it. Where can I go to learn how to use Kohana from a retarded starting point? Thank you very much for your time.

Update: I am coming to the conclusion that while Andrea answered my actual question (Can you... No but you can...), on the subject of pass by reference Blair Conrad is more technically correct. As I understand it the crux is that a copy of a reference is being passed. If you assign that copy, as in my example, then you lose the reference to the original and it remains unchanged. If, however, you 'use' that reference, for example append on a passed list, then the original is changed. I will see how the comments and votes go before choosing the answer people think is the best

• What Web design tool would make a good CityDesk replacement?

  I am looking for a tool for building static template-based web sites, your typical brochure-ware for a non-profit or a personal site. I have used CityDesk, but that is out-of-date, unsupported, and has certain problems. Of course there are lots of tools out there, but I cannot find anything similar to CityDesk: WYSIWYG as well as HTML coding a templating system not overdesigned like, say, Dreamweaver built for developers who understand HTML/JS/CSS but easier to use than hand-coding of PHP, Ruby, or other templates in a text editor supporting the editing of pages by non-developers preferably free I'd also like it to be CSS-aware; and to have lots of free templates available. Or alternatively, static template-based sites are often developed nowadays on the Web using a CMS like Django; is that the way to go? Edit: Namo, DreamWeaver, NetObjects Fusion, Coffee Cup, Evrsoft First Page, and Microsoft Expression might be candidates. I'll appreciate comments on these based on the criteria above.

• Tool used to retrieve code metrics in xUnit Test Patterns?

  I'm reading xUnit Test Patterns by Gerard Meszaros. On one of the pages he refers to some software metrics: While the need to wrap lines to keep them at 65 characters makes this code look even longer than it really is, it is still unnecessarily long. It contains 25 executable statements including initialized declarations, 6 lines of control statements, 4 in-line comments, and 2 lines to declare the test method—giving a total of 37 lines of unwrapped source code. Short of counting the statements to find these metrics, does anybody have any idea if he used a particular tool to calculate the metrics? (If you have any suggestions for tools that will count similar metrics, I'm looking for one that works on Java, Javascript and C++) Thanks!

  Hi, I'm trying to extract a number from a string. And do something like this [0-9]+ on this string "aaaa12xxxx" and get "12".   Slashdot has a little widget that allows you to tweak your comment threshold to filter out down-modded comments. It will be in one place if you scroll to the top of the page, and as you scroll down, at some point, where its original home is about to scroll off the page, it will switch to fixed position, and stay on your screen. (To see an example, click here.) My question is, how can I accomplish the same effect of having a menu be in one place when scrolled up, and switch to fixed position as the user scrolls down? I know this will involve a combination of CSS and javascript. I'm not necessarily looking for a full example of working code, but what steps will my code need to go through?

  I have found myself doing this in my code to 'cache' the work done when instantiating my Zend_Db_Table models: if (Zend_Registry::isRegistered('x_table')) { $x_table = Zend_Registry::get('x_table'); } else { $x_table = new Default_Model_DbTable_X; Zend_Registry::set('x_table', $x_table); } It bothered me that this method isn't very DRY and it dawned on me today that a singleton pattern would probably be a better way to do this. Problem is, I've never written a singleton class. When I did some web searches, I found some offhand comments about Zend_Db_Table singletons, but no real examples. I already have meta-data caching configured. How do I make my Zend_Db_Table models singletons? Are there pitfalls or downsides?

• Authentication Error in C# Send Mail App

I first thought that the code was wrong, so i change the info to my gmail account and everything goes fine, with the only SMTP server that i having trouble is with the CMail. Is there a problem with .NET and CMail's SMTP ? Thanks for the help and comments!

  I'm one of those people who can't get anything done without a to-do list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't exist. Notepad Method: When I'm programming I've been keeping notepad open with a list of to-do's for my current project. I'll constantly re-arrange these based off priority and I cross them off and move them to the completed section when I'm finished with that particular task. • NHibernate Named Query Parameter Numbering @p1 @p2 etc

  A colleague recently ran into a problem where he was passing in a single date parameter to a named query. In the query, the parameter was being used twice, once in an expression and once in a GROUP BY clause. Much to our surprise, we discovered that NHibernate used two variables and sent the single named parameter in twice, as @p1 and @p2. This behaviour caused SQL to fail the query, with the usual "a column in the select clause is not in the group by clause" (I paraphrase ofcourse). Is this behaviour normal? Can it be changed? Seems to me that if you have a parameter name like :startDate, NHibernate only needs to pass in @p1 no matter how many times you might refer to :startDate in the query. Any comments? The problem was worked around by using another sub-query to overcome the SQL parsing error.

• Silverlight Isolated Storage and loading big files

  In a Windows Phone 7 application, I would like to query a big XML file (list of cities) stored using Isolated Storage. If I do that this way, will the file be loaded to memory ( 5 mo) ? If so, what other solution do I have? Edit: More details. I want to use AutoCompleteBox (http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2008/10/introducing-autocompletebox/), but instead of using a web service (this is fixed data, no need to be online), I want to query a file/database/isolated storage... I have a fixed list of cities. I said in the comments it's 40k, but it finally seems closer to 1k rows.

• Is there unreachable code in this snippet? I don't think so, but Resharper is telling me otherwise.

  I have the following method I came across in a code review. Inside the loop Resharper is telling me that if (narrativefound == false) is incorrect becuase narrativeFound is always true. I don't think this is the case, because in order to set narrativeFound to true it has to pass the conditional string compare first, so how can it always be true? Am I missing something? • Steps needed to install a PHP application (Mantis) on Windows Home Server - How please?

  I'm using Windows Home Server and have already managed to install SVN on it to allow me to use Tortoise SVN on client PC's sharing a repository on the server via SVN's service and port. I'd now like to install a bug tracker hosted on this server. I'm not fussy about which one but I saw Mantis - which is a PHP application and looks ok for my purpose. This is where I get weak on such stuff - what steps do I need to do to install and configure PHP (and presumably MySql to get mantis working? It is an http application. As an alternate answer, I'd be happy to use another - more easily installed - bug tracker that has a server service and a port of its own. I'll appreciate any comments.

  Hi guys, I like to know how to get the ClientID/UniqueID of a control inside a Detailsview controls EditItemTemplate element and when DetailsViews changing to Edit mode and DetailsView is inside a AJAX UpdatePanel.   Hi guys! I need some help with user settings mechanism for my Yii-based application. I've created the following db structure to store user settings: table user with the following fields id | username | email | etc. table settingslist (to store a list of all possible settings with descriptions) with the following fields id | code | name | description table settings (to store all user settings) with the following fields id | userid | settingslistcode | value Now I'm stuck with the form which allows user to change his settings. I had to deal before with the regular models (i.e. for posts, comments, etc.) where every new model had only one row in the database (Post model - id | title | body |) with the certain amount of attributes (fields of the table). But now I need to store user settings in 10-15 rows and I don't know how to apply Yii model mechanism to work with this, so I can retrieve those settings in a single form (so user could change his preferences). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

• Looking for a good implementation that will access multiple databases simultaneously

  I just want to find out if there's a good implementation (in C#/ASP.NET) on how to access my records from my different databases simultaneously. I have this simple application which suppose to search on these databases, then, display the record if a certain keyword is matched. I have like 5 databases (currently using MySQL) all in all and will be expanding it on the future (might be changing to SQL Server). I am fully aware on how to search on a single database, while I'm still learning how do it in multiple databases. Any tips, comments or suggestions?

Before you all respond "a slash followed by an asterisk", I mean what's the correct way to write them on paper. (IE, How many points should the asterisk have? • SQL Insert multilingual characters

  I am trying to create a table in my MS SQL database for Languages. I want to store an English name of Language and a local name of language in the database. i.e. Language, Language(local) English, English German, Deutsch Italian, Italiano Japanese, ??? ... ... I have 279 languages that I want to import, but when I import it shows '?????' for some like japanese, Russian and arabic etc The database Collation is Latin1_General_CI_AS. I would also like advise on multilingual websites; if i have a database of product descriptions and I want to have translation in multiple languages, should I go for separate databases or Can I have translation in one databse? (I prefer not to duplicate data!). Anything else to make sure users are able to write comments in different languages (char encoding on web?) and can be stored in database.
