• Having trouble installing guest additions for a Xubuntu 13.10 guest OS in Virtualbox 4.2.10

  I am using Ubuntu 13.04 64-BIT as my host operating system running Virtual Box 4.2.10. I get this message when I tell virtualbox to install guest additions(CTRL+D),mounting the volume in the guest OS and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file using root by: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run It starts and then comes to these error messages: Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.2.10 Guest Additions for Linux.......... VirtualBox Guest Additions installer Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done. Installing the Window System drivers Warning: unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers. Installing modules ...done. Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done. allusers@allusers-VirtualBox:/media/allusers/VBOXADDITIONS_4.2.10_84104$ I followed everything from the official VirtualBox manual on installing guest additions for linux I used some other commands such as: sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) dkms and: sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-x11 I rebooted after executing those command and it still wont work. It still says the kernel modules are missing and the window is not seamless. Any idea what could be the problem?

• Upgraded to 13.10 now clock settings are all disabled and clock does not display

  I've upgraded to 13.10 and now I don't have the standard menu clock, which I need for work. I checked and 'indicator-datetime' is installed. I even uninstalled/reinstalled that applet with no luck. Also my "clock" settings under System Preferences are all disabled. I can't change anything. Does anyone know how I can get the old menu clock back? Alternatively is there another menu clock app I can download? Thanks for the responses I've restarted several times and that didn't fix the issue. I just ran the 13.10 update today. But I ran it again a few minutes ago. I got about 200KB in random updates.   I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 today and now am getting the following error: You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these. • Problem with installing Flash

  This question has been posted loads of times, I know, but seriously I've spent hours and HOURS searching the web for answers. Anyways, basically I have just installed Ubuntu 13.04 for the first time. I tried to get on youtube and found out I cannot play videos. When I went to install flash the windows popped up saying either install Adobe flash or gnash. installed Flash from the Adobe website. Three different files types to choose from. YUM, .tar.gz or .rpm. Now from what I could gather .tar.gz is the right one so I tried it and it downloaded without the error message. It comes up with the box that says open with archive manager. Extracted the files but none of them were of any use. Could not work out how to install it. There was no file intended for installation. So what am I meant to do with these files? Would it be easier to just install Gnash?

• Carriers Holding Your OS Updates Hostage

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/10/10/carriers-holding-your-os-updates-hostage.aspx Just a small rant here.  Today the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update finally became available for Nokia handset users.  Now I’m not sure that it is AT&T fault entirely that Samsung and HTC users got their updates two months ago and we are just finally seeing it.  It may have something to do with the Nokia Amber update.  But every Windows Phone update on AT&T from 7.1 on seems to have been delayed.  How is it that the premiere Windows Phone carrier is always the last one to release updates? Smart phone ecosystems are a partnership between the OS provider, the hardware manufacturer and the carriers.  If any one of those partners does not hold up its responsibilities then everyone gets a black eye.  The goal for all involved should be to release updates as early as possible with reasonable assurance of stability.  This ensures the satisfaction of consumers and increases the likelihood of future sales. From what I have seen so far AT&T has been the one breaking the consumer’s trust in the Windows Phone ecosystem.  Aside from voicing our dissatisfaction we may need to start voting with our feet until they realize that they being a poor citizen has consequences. That’s where you hold your arms up and a partner punches you in your midsection – your breadbasket. I put my arms up, and braced for impact. The trainer came over, saw I was a bit nervous, and coached me through. I can see the fear in your eyes. Don’t be afraid to take the punch. Tighten your core, breathe through the hit. Don’t panic. Over the summer we’d do counter drills as well. This is where a partner throws a punch, you defend but also throw one back – a counter punch. You never just sit back and take a beating, you deflect the blow and come back with one more powerful. These lessons on fighting can apply to all aspects of our lives and any attempts at success that we have. I saw this image recently and agree with it 100%: Success is never a straight forward line. It’s messy, its wrought with failures, its learning over time and applying those life lessons. It’s learning how to take punches and lose your fear, its seeing a punch coming and countering it, but most of all its not giving up and continually moving forward. We do stairs at boxing, which is running up and down three flights of stairs. I’m not anywhere near incredible shape and after doing multiple stairs in a single workout you can feel gassed, tired, even discouraged after hitting the second floor and seeing everyone else running by you. I read a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that I cling to throughout my day: You want to be successful? Take the punches, but learn how to take them. Counter them. and no matter what, always move forward.

• apt-get does not work with proxy

  For a command sudo apt-get update I get following error W: Failed to fetch http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick-updates/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied. ) I am running Ubuntu 10.10 installed on Windows XP using VirtualBox. For internet connections I am using proxy server with an authentication. I tried to use gnome-network-proxy tool to set proxy settings system-wide. After that /etc/environment has been updated by http_proxy variable with the format http://my_proxy:port/, there were no authentication data. I checked this with firefox. Browser asked my for login and password and everything was working fine. It was unfortunately not the case for apt-get. I have also tried to do as described here. Unfortunately it does not work. May it be somehow related to the fact that a proxy is in a Windows domain, any ideas ? EDIT: My proxy name is http-proxy. Is '-' a special character here ?

• What is an elegant way to install non-repository software in 12.04?

  Perhaps I missed something when Canonical removed the "Create launcher" option from the right click menu, because I've really been missing that little guy. For me, it was the preferred way to install software that comes not in a .deb, but in a tar.gz, for example. (Note: in that tar.gz I have a folder with the compiled files, I'm NOT compiling from source) I just downloaded the new Eclipse IDE and extracted the tar.gz to my /usr folder. Now, I'd like to add it to my desktop and dash so it can be started easily. Intuitively I would right click the desktop and create a launcher. After this I'd copy the .desktop to /usr/share/applications. However, creating a launcher is not possible. My question: How would you install an already compiled tar.gz that you have downloaded from the internet? Below are a few things I've seen, but these are all more time-consuming than the right click option. If you have any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks! Manual copy & create a .desktop file: manually Simply extract the archive to /usr. Create a new text file, adding something along the lines of the code block below: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Exec="/usr/local/eclipse42/eclipse" Name="Eclipse 4.2" Icon=/home/tomas/icons/eclipse.svg Rename this file to eclipse42.desktop and make it executable. • Installing LBP 2900 ubuntu -> libs folders wrong?

  I am trying to get my Canon LBP2900 printer to work on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. What I have done is try to follow the steps on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CanonCaptDrv190 So I downloaded the version 2.3 driver and tried to convert the rpm files to debian and installed them sudo alien cndrvcups-capt-2.30-1.x86_64.rpm cndrvcups-common-2.30-1.x86_64.rpm sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-capt-2.30-1.x86_64.deb cndrvcups-common-2.30-1.x86_64.deb restarted cups and try to install the printer with lpadmin: sudo service cups restart sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LBP2900 -m /usr/share/cups/model/CNCUPSLBP2900CAPTK.ppd -v ccp://localhost:59787 -E What I noticed however that on the step with lpadmin it goes wrong with the error: lpadmin: Bad device-uri scheme "ccp" After trying to trace what has gone wrong, I think I nailed it to the fact that dpkg installed a file /usr/lib64/cups/backend/ccp instead of /usr/lib/cups/backend/ccp Checking the original rpm with archive manager shows indeed that /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 are used, with the backend/cpp file only installed in lib64. As I understand correctly, Ubuntu 11.10 uses /usr/lib32 and /usr/lib instead so the files are installed in the wrong place. Is there an automated method of converting the rpm/deb files with the wrong lib structure to one with the right lib structure for ubuntu 11.10? Or am I completely on the wrong track for getting my printer installed?

Jake Sabulsky started off by explaining that you should be concentrating on the core functionality of your app and letting the framework take care of the features that users require these days.  This is implemented be leveraging contracts.  When Windows 8 was released it included the File, Share and Pickers contracts.  With the release of Windows 8.1 they have added the Contacts and Calendar contracts. There have been a number of improvements to the original contracts. The File URI contract will now automatically detect the size that a new windows should be opened and will also allow you to programmatically influence new window size.  The Share contract has been enhanced by allowing apps to always share screenshots and links to the app in the store. • Interesting sessions/tips from RMOUG

  One of the sessions I was at at last week's RMOUG was a session on Temp Tablespace Groups. I had a look because I had no experience with this and it seemed to help with parallel processing and the allocation/usage of temp. You can read the excellent write-up at Kellyn Pedersen's blog - who did the session and all the work - here. So for all of those who may be seeing lot's of waits like enq: TS - Contention when you are doing hash joins and sorts, do have a look at the above blog post. I also had the chance to listen in at Stewart Bryson's session on Restartability (he had 3 R-s) where he gave very useful tips about how to deal with your data warehouse loads. Questions like archive log mode - should I or should I not were well covered. Flashback archives, also nice to hear about. Very nice talk, very interesting. Unfortunately he hasn't blogged about it yes, so no pointers to that one. Got to see a couple of other interesting sessions, and as conferences go got to meet some interesting Oracle folks from the region. As usual RMOUG was useful and fun. Off to the drawing boards to design next year's session!

• Installing LBP 2900 printer -> libs folders wrong?

  I am trying to get my Canon LBP2900 printer to work on Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. What I have done is try to follow the steps on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CanonCaptDrv190 So I downloaded the version 2.3 driver and tried to convert the rpm files to debian and installed them sudo alien cndrvcups-capt-2.30-1.x86_64.rpm cndrvcups-common-2.30-1.x86_64.rpm sudo dpkg -i cndrvcups-capt-2.30-1.x86_64.deb cndrvcups-common-2.30-1.x86_64.deb restarted cups and try to install the printer with lpadmin: sudo service cups restart sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LBP2900 -m /usr/share/cups/model/CNCUPSLBP2900CAPTK.ppd -v ccp://localhost:59787 -E What I noticed however that on the step with lpadmin it goes wrong with the error: lpadmin: Bad device-uri scheme "ccp" After trying to trace what has gone wrong, I think I nailed it to the fact that dpkg installed a file /usr/lib64/cups/backend/ccp instead of /usr/lib/cups/backend/ccp Checking the original rpm with archive manager shows indeed that /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 are used, with the backend/cpp file only installed in lib64. As I understand correctly, Ubuntu 11.10 uses /usr/lib32 and /usr/lib instead so the files are installed in the wrong place. Is there an automated method of converting the rpm/deb files with the wrong lib structure to one with the right lib structure for ubuntu 11.10? Or am I completely on the wrong track for getting my printer installed?

• Rosegarden plugin list is empty

  I've just installed rosegarden through apt. I've also installed jack and a low latency kernel through a PPA https://launchpad.net/~abogani/+archive/ppa. I've started jack-server and through the control panel I can see its wiring things through rosegarden. I've also tried installing qsynth and dssi both through apt. However I can't see any plug ins in the synth plug-in list. Therefore I'm unable to test if this works. I've tried launching qsynth before rosegarden and I've tried a few things however I just can't see any plugins. Does anyone know how to get this to work? • Why C# does not support multiple inheritance?

  Yesterday, One of my friend Dharmendra ask me that why C# does not support multiple inheritance. This is question most of the people ask every time. So I thought it will be good to write a blog post about it. So why it does not support multiple inheritance? I tried to dig into the problem and I have found the some of good links from C# team from Microsoft for why it’s not supported in it. Following is a link for it. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/csharpfaq/archive/2004/03/07/85562.aspx Also, I was giving some of the example to my friend Dharmendra where multiple inheritance can be a problem.The problem is called the diamond problem. Let me explain a bit. If you have class that is inherited from the more then one classes and If two classes have same signature function then for child class object, It is impossible to call specific parent class method. Here is the link that explains more about diamond problem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_problem Now of some of people could ask me then why its supporting same implementation with the interfaces. But for interface you can call that method explicitly that this is the method for the first interface and this the method for second interface. This is not possible with multiple inheritance. • Backup Failed, need help not failing

  Backup (Deja Dup) failed to do an initial backup to my Amazon S3, and despite my best Googling efforts, I could not find a solution : ( Here's the error message: BackendException: Error uploading s3+http://deja-dup-auto-akiaiksyiqi3buaaz26a/My-Archive/duplicity-full.20130805T143807Z.vol1.difftar.gpg I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a System76. The folder I'm trying to backup to in S3 is set to store as Amazon Glacier Storage. Any help would rock! Update: better debugging info: DUPLICITY: .
