  Hi, I recently posted a question about getting last 3 results in table in the correct order. I now want the get all comments apart from the last 3 in the correct order. Here is my syntax; SELECT * FROM (SELECT * FROM $table ORDER BY ID DESC OFFSET 3) AS T ORDER BY TIME_STAMP the error i am receiving is; You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'OFFSET, 3) AS T ORDER BY TIME_STAMP' at line 1 I can't seem to get it to work. Any help much appreciated.

• Is it possible to query a XML file with SQL?

  Currently I'm working on a case where we don't want to change to much on a c#/wpf program, but like to add a feature. Currently we allow certain users to add sql queries to a database to retrieve customer data, hereby a custom connection string/ provider name must be specified. With this information it's possible to create the connection and obtain the data with c#. However we like to add the possibility to allow that user group to query XML files too, with a certain connection string/ provider name. I just had a look for possibities in .net to do that, but can't seem to find a decent way... Is something like this possible? (OleDb/ODBC way maybe?) Thanks in advance.

• Bringing specific results to the front using one MySQL query.

  I'm setting up my geolocation feature which lists out all the countries in order of name. However, most websites have it set up where the popular countries (such as United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia) are at the front of the list (are shown first rather than in their assigned places). Is it possible to achieve this using the same MySQL query that I am already running to select them? SELECT * FROM `global_flags` ORDER BY `country` Is there a better alternative somewhere? Perhaps something that can reorganize the results after the database has already been queried? I don't want to exclude those results and then manually type them at the beginning because that would waste more space in the file.

• Why is Postgres doing a Hash in this query?

  I have two tables: A and P. I want to get information out of all rows in A whose id is in a temporary table I created, tmp_ids. However, there is additional information about A in the P table, foo, and I want to get this info as well. I have the following query: SELECT A.H_id AS hid, A.id AS aid, P.foo, A.pos, A.size FROM tmp_ids, P, A WHERE tmp_ids.id = A.H_id AND P.id = A.P_id I noticed it going slowly, and when I asked Postgres to explain, I noticed that it combines tmp_ids with an index on A I created for H_id with a nested loop. However, it hashes all of P before doing a Hash join with the result of the first merge. P is quite large and I think this is what's taking all the time. Why would it create a hash there? P.id is P's primary key, and A.P_id has an index of its own.

• MYSQL how to ignore a table in a 3 table query if it doesnt satisfy the statement

  I am trying to have information displayed for this query: SELECT o.sub_number,o.unique_id,o.period_from,o.period_to,o.total_amt,i.paid_amt,i.dated,i.payment,i.paid_by,i.entered_date,i.paid_for_unique,j.cheque_num,j.drawn_on,j.dated AS cheque_dated FROM paid_details o, payment_details i,cheque j WHERE o.unique_id=i.unique_id AND o.unique_id=j.unique_id AND o.sub_number IN(SELECT sub_number FROM paid_details WHERE unique_id LIKE '%1271437707%'); it flops. Well the problem is sometimes the cheque might not have any information in it. So how do i get MYSQL to ignore that table and still continue displaying the rest of the information? thanks!

• Is there a way to split the results of a select query into two equal halfs?

  I'd like to have a query returning two ResultSets each of which holding exactly half of all records matching a certain criteria. I tried using TOP 50 PERCENT in conjunction with an Order By but if the number of records in the table is odd, one record will show up in both resultsets. Example: I've got a simple table with TheID (PK) and TheValue fields (varchar(10)) and 5 records. Skip the where clause for now. SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID asc results in the selected id's 1,2,3 SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID desc results in the selected id's 3,4,5 3 is a dup. In real life of course the queries are fairly complicated with a ton of where clauses and subqueries.

  Here is my case , I have a database table with below fields name place_code email phone address details estd others and example data if you look at the above example table First three records are talking about XYZ and place code 1020 . I want create a single record for these three records based on substring(name,1,4) place_code ( I am lucky here for all the similar records satisfies this condition and unique in the table .) For the other columns which record column length has max . For example again for the above 3 records email should be [email protected] , phone should be 657890 and details should be "testdetails" This should be done for all the table . • Prevent .htaccess syntax error

  Hi, As part of one our system's we enable a user in the backoffice to add a block of 301 redirects should they need to. This is just a textarea which then populates a specific area of a .htaccess file. As much as this may seem insecure it has only previously used internally by people who know what they are doing but for various reasons they cannot access the specific file. We need now to allow more access to this function, not for the general public, but for people that probably have far less knowledge of regexp etc and syntax in htaccess files. Obviously the major concern here is the user enters some bad syntax and makes their entire site, including the backoffice where they could fix the issue, totally inaccessible without manual intervention. What approaches can i take to make sure that they do not break their site? A htaccess syntax check? copy the file elsewhere and check it doesnt generate a 500 error (with cURL or similar)?. Would welcome any ideas. Thanks.

  hi I have the following simplified tables: CREATE TABLE recipe(id int, name varchar(25)); CREATE TABLE ingredient(name varchar(25)); CREATE TABLE uses_ingredient(recipe_id int, name varchar(25)); I want to make a query that returns all id's of recipes that contain both Chicken and Cream. I have tried SELECT recipe_id FROM uses_ingredient INNER JOIN (SELECT * FROM ingredient WHERE name="Chicken" OR name="Cream") USING (name) GROUP BY recipe_id HAVING COUNT(recipe_id) >= (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM theme); which gives me :"ERROR 1248 (42000): Every derived table must have its own alias" and is probably wrong too. Next I tried SELECT recipe_id FROM (SELECT * FROM ingredient WHERE name="Chicken" OR name="Cream") AS t INNER JOIN uses_ingredient USING (name) GROUP BY recipe_id HAVING COUNT(recipe_id)>= (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM t); which gives "ERROR 1146 (42S02): Table 'recipedb.t' doesn't exist" I want to avoid creating temporary tables including using ENGINE=MEMORY.

  I saw somewhere what seemed to be nested selects, one "master" select on the "outside" and a series of selects inside- is this possible? I'm not talking about joins as there is particular relation between the selects. I seem not to be explaining myself very well. I want to do a single query which will pull out a series of stats from various tables latest order, latest customer, largest order. Obviously I can do that with a series of selects. The example I saw was something like select ( select ... from tbl_1 where .., select ... from tbl_2 where .., select ... from tbl_3 where .., ... )

  During configuring replication on one of the server, I received following error. This is very common error and the solution of the same is even simpler. MSDTC on server is unavailable. Changed database context to publisherdatabase. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 8501) Solution: Enable “Distributed Transaction Coordinator” in SQL Server. • SQL SERVER – Generate Database Script for SQL Azure

  When talking about SQL Azure the common complain I hear is that the script generated from stand-along SQL Server database is not compatible with SQL Azure. This was true for some time for sure but not any more. If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed you can follow the guideline below to generate script which is compatible with SQL Azure. As above images are very clear I will not write more about them. SQL Azure does not support filegroups. Let us generate script for any table created on PRIMARY filegroup for standalong SQL Server and compare it with the script generated for SQL Azure. You can clearly see that there is no filegroup in the code generated for SQL Azure. Give it a try and please your comment here about what do you think about the same.   I recently got following email from one of the reader. Hi Pinal, Even thought my database is in full recovery mode when I try to take log backup I am getting following error. BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) How to fix it? Thanks, [name and email removed as requested] Solution / Fix: This error can happen when you have never taken full backup of your database and you try to attempt to take backup of the log only. Take full backup once and attempt to take log back up. If the name of your database is MyTestDB follow procedure as following.   Blog reader Joyesh Mitra recently left a comment to one of my very old posts about SQL SERVER – 2005 Take Off Line or Detach Database, which I have written focusing on taking the database offline. However, I did not include how to bring the offline database to online in that post. The reason I did not write it was that I was thinking it was a very simple script that almost everyone knows. However, it seems to me that there is something I found advanced in this procedure that is not simple for other people.
