• Welcome to my first official full time employee!

  The last few months have been pretty manic and Vizioz has been growing successfully into a fully fledged development agency. I have been working with a couple of excellent off shore developers who I would like to publicly thank for all their hard work over the last couple of months!This week has been the start of a new era for Vizioz, I have taken on my first full time developer who is now based in our office in Reading, welcome to Colin. Which means we now have 3 Umbraco developers! Currently one with Level 2 qualification (me) but if business keeps growing I'll be sending the others for training shortly so hopefully by the end of the summer we'll be a certified solution provider.We have lots of plans for the next 6 months, so it should be exciting times, subscribe to my RSS feed to come along for the ride :)

• 0.00006103515625 GB of RAM. Is .NET MicroFramework part of Windows CE?

  The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM. • F# &ndash; It&rsquo;s time to grow up baby.

  In the last few months since I started learning F# I have begin to notice an increase in the number of people blogging about the language. Sure, it could just be that I am noticing it more because I am actively looking out for questions and blog posts, but even in my day to day reading of Code Project Daily News and Stack Overflow questions there seems to be increased activity around the language. So what sparked this post? Well, today today I logged in and saw that the latest podcast by DNR was on F# and then immediately afterwards I received an email from CodeProject with a great article comparing F# and Scala. Currently, as of this blog posting (21 May 2010) F# is ranked on the tiobe site at position 43, but I am willing to put money on it that in the next few tiobe ratings this ranking will continue to rise till F# will be a top 20.

• Windows RT Secured Only By Microsoft

  That disconcerting news is what Mark Hachman is reporting for Read Write Web. One can more or less safely assume that Microsoft will come up with its own antivirus software for Windows RT. Still, this is a rather unusual state of affairs; why is the company doing this? Hachman explains that apps for the Windows RT operating system can run just fine on Windows 8, but the reverse is not true, unless the Windows 8 app has been specially compiled to run on both Windows 8 and Windows RT. • Access Control Service v2

  A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)

• Deleting ASP.NET application subdirectories causes application recycle!

  This may not be news to most people, but was definitely a shock to me!   In the .NET 2.x framework a "feature" was implemented where by an ASP.NET application is automatically recycled if any subdirectory is deleted. This was apparently implemented to prevent stale content from appearing on a site.   The unfortunate side effect of this "feature" is that when using the "InProc" model for session management, all session data is lost if a subdirectory is deleted.   For those who progammatically may be adding/deleting directories within their application as inherent functionality, this causes a rather large problem.   The solution? Create your folder(s) which may be programmatically deleted outside of the root folder for the application. Alernatively, utilize a file based structure vs. folders since deleting files does not result in the same issue.

• What developer conferences are you going to this year?

  This short list is what I consider to be the “cream-of-the-crop” in developer conferences. This is also a list of the conferences that I plan on attending in 2011. If you feel your conference is just as good, then shoot me an email at [michael[at]michaelcrump[dot]net, and if possible I will check it out.   In-Person Event Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd, 2011 Redmond on October 17th-21st, 2011 Orlando on December 5th-9th, 2011 Visual Studio Live – I attended this event in November of last year and blogged about my experience. I am also planning on going back to the Orlando session in December of this year. So what did I like the most about this event? Being able to interact one-on-one with a majority of the speakers. If you read my blog post then you will see a list of the speakers that I met up with. I also made a lot of great connections with other professional developers all over the world. They are having an event in Las Vegas on April 18th-22nd. I noticed at this event that they have added a new track on mobile. Being a big fan of mobile, I feel that this is a great move. I must add that you can save $300 bucks by getting the early-bird special.   Virtual Conference SSWUG (DBTechCon) - holds the largest virtual conference in the information technology industry. The session list has also been published. If you are interested in this then you can register here.   In-Person Event Knoxville, TN on June 3rd/4th 2011. Codestock.org – If you live in the South then you have heard of CodeStock. To my knowledge, they have only had 3 events so far and they were a huge success. It was such a success that after the last event, everyone was telling me how good it was and how much they enjoyed it. They currently have a call for speakers going on right now, so if you have sessions then be sure to submit yours. So, what makes them stand out? Well for starters Michael Neal (organizer) developed an open API so conference attendees could build their own apps for the sessions. They also encouraged their speakers to go to other sessions instead of stay in a “speaker-room”. Another cool feature is that they are uploading videos from the conference so everyone can benefit. They are currently looking for sponsorship, so help out if you can.   In-Person Event Redmond, WA on October 28/29 2011 *NOT 100% SURE AT THIS POINT* PDC 11 – OK, so the logo should be pdc11 but its not out yet. This event is located on Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, WA. It is probably one of the most well known conferences for developers to attend. One of the big perks from this event is that you typically come away with free stuff. In 2010 they gave away Windows 7 Phones. I remember years earlier they gave away laptops. This of course isn’t the only reason to go, you may get to tour the Microsoft campus. Since pdc is a huge event, you can view all the events for free. • 301 Redirects for regional variants of a homepage

  I am planning on implementing a website which has regional homepage variants. For Example: mycompany.com/europe mycompany.com/us The rest of the site is region agnostic and content will continue such as: mycompany.com/news mycompany.com/about-us etc For homepage (.com) requests, I plan on redirecting users to the correct homepage variant (via 301). If I cannot determine the correct one, I will fallback to redirecting them to the US homepage (/us). From an SEO point of view, firstly is this ok? or should I be doing anything additional to this for making search engines aware of the regional differences? As crawlers are region agnostic, I plan on directing them to the US page with a 301, or should I have something on the .com page which they use? Being that the regional homepage's will likely be the most visited pages, they should show up in result sitelinks when searching for mycompany (which I think is a good thing). Apologies for the slightly open question - I know anything SEO related is more opinion/best practice than fact but am purely looking for advice.

• Expected time for an CakePHP MVC form/controller and db make up

  I would like to know, what is an average time for building a form in MVC pattern with for example CakePHP. I build 8 functions, two of them do custom queries, return json data, split them, expand them in a model in memory and delivers to the view. Those are three queries if you consider and an array to feed view for making some combo box. Why? all these, because I have data from json and I split them in order to make row of data like a table. Like that I changed a bit the edit.ctp but not a lot. And I created a javascript outside, with three functions. One collects data the other upon a change of a combo returnes the selected values, and does also some redirection flow. All this, in average how much time should it take ?

It looks like there's no way to do this out-of-the-box with phpbb. Is there a way to hack it in?

• Google still has record of my old site URL - what to do?

  I had a blog site, i.e. http://example2.com, then I bought a new domain, i.e. http://example.com and 301 permanent redirected example2.com to example.com. But when I get into the Google Webmaster Tools, if I get some 404, and then click into the link and see the "Linked from" tab, it shows some links like: http://example.com/post-1 http://example2.com/feed http://example2.com/post-1 According to Google, if you change your domain, just use a redirection for at least 4-6 months, but it almost passed. Then why Google has still traces of my old site? The issue is important, because I don't want to pay for the old domain anymore. I tried deleting my existing sitemap.xml and recreating it from the new site, but still such links are stored. What could I do?

• CMS without templates

  I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

  I am semi-excited to say that today is my first day into the land of backbone.js.  This will of course take me into many other new javascript-y areas.  As I have primarily been focused on building backend systems for the past many years…with no focus on client side bits…this will be all new ground for me.  Very exciting! I am sure that this endeavor will lead to writing about many new findings along the way.  Expect the subject of near future postings to not be related to MVC or server side code. • WebLogic Application Server: free for developers!

  Great news! Oracle WebLogic Server is now free for developers! What does this mean for you? That you as a developer are permited to: "[...] deploy the programs only on your single developer desktop computer (of any type, including physical, virtual or remote virtual), to be used and accessed by only (1) named developer."
