  • Change the scale-policy of OpenGL ES in Android?

    I currently develop a game for Android in OpenGL ES 1.0, use libgdx library. I target the 720x480 screen size. For example, I design only one arts pack for 720x480. And what will happen in Android phones with screen-size smaller or bigger than it, 480x320 for instance? Could you please tell me how to change the scale-policy of OpenGL ES in Android? Or in libgdx specially? Is there anything like "Resample Image" like photoshop?(Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear, Bicubic etc..) for libgdx? Edit: I found some tutorials about texture filter in OpenGL, test it with Linear and Nearest. Linear is good for scaling but slow down the game, and Nearest is on the contrary. What should I do to get a balance between those?

  • What is needed to become a skillful and professional software developer ?

    I am interested in studying algorithms and my strong points are problem-solving and logical thinking. However what I am guided toward is web-developing languages, SQL and they seem to not exploit the best out of me. I think it's because lots of people can learn these things easily, even steal ideas and copy code. Is that wrong? I was told that "learning algorithms is just for optimization, so you just need to know it (not a deep understanding)", but I think algorithms are my savior; it differentiates one man's abilities from others'. Also I'm learning C++ to benefit my future career. Many people say that web developer is a future trend, which worries me. I don't know what I need to standout in my career, and should I balance between web and software developing or just one? Should I work hard on algorithms?

  • How much time do you need in between large projects?

    You've launched a large project at work, something that's been in progress and taken up large chunks of your life for more than 6 months. The post-launch triage is over. Tech support isn't calling you every hour because they don't know how to troubleshoot an issue. Your hours drop from 60+/wk to whatever is normal in your organization (which is hopefully less than 60+!). How much time do you (or your team) need before the next large project begins? I was asked this question at work and I think the ideal minimum is two weeks -- one week to clear your desk and inbox + one week to clear your head and remember what it's like to have a life outside of work. I'd frankly acknowledge that just being asked this question is a huge boon to work/life balance. But I do think it's possible to go too long in between.

    I recently attended a conference and met some insanely talented developers with mile-long lists of accomplishments. One puzzling thing I noticed about many of these wildly successful people is that a lot of their output (books, blogs, games, mobile apps) are done as hobby projects outside of their normal jobs. Not only this, but most of them were married, and some even with children. I'm absolutely baffled by this. My question is targeted to folks that are married, working full time, and also spend time outside of work on hobby projects or extra programming. The question is: How many hours do you put in programming outside of your normal job, and how do you balance it with your family life?

    What's the best way to generate a cryptographically secure 32 bytes salt in PHP, without depending on libraries seldom included in typical PHP installations? After some googling I discovered that mt_rand is not considered secure enough, but I haven't found a suggestion for a replacement. One article suggested reading from /dev/random but not only this won't work on windows; it is also very slow. I want a reasonable balance between security and speed (ie, it shouldn't take 20 seconds to generate 512 bytes, like /dev/random usually does)

They would accumulate a balance owing, and then every week they would be charged for that amount. Is there a way I can do this without having to store their credit card information in my database?     Hi all, Two rows in the my database have the following data: brand | product | style ================================================= Doc Martens | Doc Martens 1460 Boots | NULL NewBalance | New Balance WR1062 SG Width | NULL Mininum word length is set to 3, and a FULLTEXT index is created across all the three columns above. When I run a search for IS BOOLEAN matches for +doc in the index, I get the first row returned as a result. When I search for +new, I get no results. Can someone explain why? Thanks.

    I'm trying to find a balance between performance and degree of compression when gzipping a Java webapp response. In looking at the Deflater class, I can set a level and a strategy. The levels are self explanatory - BEST_SPEED to BEST_COMPRESSION. I'm not sure regarding the strategies - DEFAULT_STRATEGY, FILTERED and HUFFMAN_ONLY I can make some sense from the Javadoc but I was wondering if someone had used a specific strategy in their apps and if you saw any difference in terms of performance / degree of compression.     Working on a Data Warehouse project, the guy that gave us the tutorial advised that we stick to using SQL queries over defining a lot of data flow transformations, citing points like it'll consume a lot of memory on the ETL box so we'd rather leave the processing to the DB box. Is this really advisable? Where's the balance between relying on GUI tools over executing a bunch of SQL scripts on your Integration package? And honestly, I'd like to avoid writing SQL queries as much as I can.

At the moment I'm using these two heuristics: Number of holes between lectures in one day (related) (less holes - bigger score) Each hour has some value, so for each timetable I sum values for hours when lectures are on. (lectures at more appropriate hours - bigger score) I want to balance these two heuristics, so the algorithm wouldn't favor neither one. What would be the best way to achieve this?
