  • Overriding GetHashCode in a mutable struct - What NOT to do?

    - by Kyle Baran
    I am using the XNA Framework to make a learning project. It has a Point struct which exposes an X and Y value; for the purpose of optimization, it breaks the rules for proper struct design, since its a mutable struct. As Marc Gravell, John Skeet, and Eric Lippert point out in their respective posts about GetHashCode() (which Point overrides), this is a rather bad thing, since if an object's values change while its contained in a hashmap (ie, LINQ queries), it can become "lost". However, I am making my own Point3D struct, following the design of Point as a guideline. Thus, it too is a mutable struct which overrides GetHashCode(). The only difference is that mine exposes and int for X, Y, and Z values, but is fundamentally the same. The signatures are below: public struct Point3D : IEquatable<Point3D> { public int X; public int Y; public int Z; public static bool operator !=(Point3D a, Point3D b) { } public static bool operator ==(Point3D a, Point3D b) { } public Point3D Zero { get; } public override int GetHashCode() { } public override bool Equals(object obj) { } public bool Equals(Point3D other) { } public override string ToString() { } } I have tried to break my struct in the way they describe, namely by storing it in a List<Point3D>, as well as changing the value via a method using ref, but I did not encounter they behavior they warn about (maybe a pointer might allow me to break it?). Am I being too cautious in my approach, or should I be okay to use it as is?

  • General type conversion without risking Exceptions

    - by Mongus Pong
    I am working on a control that can take a number of different datatypes (anything that implements IComparable). I need to be able to compare these with another variable passed in. If the main datatype is a DateTime, and I am passed a String, I need to attempt to convert the String to a DateTime to perform a Date comparison. if the String cannot be converted to a DateTime then do a String comparison. So I need a general way to attempt to convert from any type to any type. Easy enough, .Net provides us with the TypeConverter class. Now, the best I can work out to do to determine if the String can be converted to a DateTime is to use exceptions. If the ConvertFrom raises an exception, I know I cant do the conversion and have to do the string comparison. The following is the best I got : string theString = "99/12/2009"; DateTime theDate = new DateTime ( 2009, 11, 1 ); IComparable obj1 = theString as IComparable; IComparable obj2 = theDate as IComparable; try { TypeConverter converter = TypeDescriptor.GetConverter ( obj2.GetType () ); if ( converter.CanConvertFrom ( obj1.GetType () ) ) { Console.WriteLine ( obj2.CompareTo ( converter.ConvertFrom ( obj1 ) ) ); Console.WriteLine ( "Date comparison" ); } } catch ( FormatException ) { Console.WriteLine ( obj1.ToString ().CompareTo ( obj2.ToString () ) ); Console.WriteLine ( "String comparison" ); } Part of our standards at work state that : Exceptions should only be raised when an Exception situation - ie. an error is encountered. But this is not an exceptional situation. I need another way around it. Most variable types have a TryParse method which returns a boolean to allow you to determine if the conversion has succeeded or not. But there is no TryConvert method available to TypeConverter. CanConvertFrom only dermines if it is possible to convert between these types and doesnt consider the actual data to be converted. The IsValid method is also useless. Any ideas? EDIT I cannot use AS and IS. I do not know either data types at compile time. So I dont know what to As and Is to!!! EDIT Ok nailed the bastard. Its not as tidy as Marc Gravells, but it works (I hope). Thanks for the inpiration Marc. Will work on tidying it up when I get the time, but I've got a bit stack of bugfixes that I have to get on with. public static class CleanConverter { /// <summary> /// Stores the cache of all types that can be converted to all types. /// </summary> private static Dictionary<Type, Dictionary<Type, ConversionCache>> _Types = new Dictionary<Type, Dictionary<Type, ConversionCache>> (); /// <summary> /// Try parsing. /// </summary> /// <param name="s"></param> /// <param name="value"></param> /// <returns></returns> public static bool TryParse ( IComparable s, ref IComparable value ) { // First get the cached conversion method. • session variables lost between pages or use same variables

    - by user222333
    Hi, Yesterday I learn many thing from you, especially from Marc and my problem was solved ( session variables lost between pages or use same variables ). But now I continue asking: I don't want to use Session ID(session.use_trans_sid = 1) between pages. • Verification GetHashCode and Equals

    - by nettguy
    Does the following code show the correct implementation of overriding GetHashCode ? public class Person { public string fName{get;set;} public string lName { get; set; } public int age { get; set; } public override bool Equals(object obj) { Person p = obj as Person; if (p == null) return false; return ( p.GetType()==this.GetType() && p.fName==this.fName &&p.lName==this.lName && p.age==this.age ); } //I took the below code from Marc Gravell's post,I am not sure whether i have implemented it properly public override int GetHashCode() { unchecked { int hash = 13; hash = (hash * 7) + fName.GetHashCode(); hash = (hash * 7) + lName.GetHashCode(); hash = (hash * 7) + age.GetHashCode(); return hash; } } }

  • My OpenGL game switches Aero DWM Glass off.

    - by marc40000
    Hi ! I wrote a free game a few years ago: http://www.walkover.org. For the lobby and menus, it uses normal dialogs like win32. When the actual game starts it uses OpenGL. Now, on Windows 7, when the actual game starts, it switches windows aero glass off and switches it back on when the game is over. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Some special flags that keep the glass on if it is on? (For newer, I have been using DirectX and this doesn#t happen there.) Maybe some (new) flag I have to specify somewhere? Thx Marc

  • C# -Closure -Clarification

    - by nettguy
    I am learning C#.Can I mean closure as a construct that can adopt the changes in the environment in which it is defined. Example : List<Person> gurus = new List<Person>() { new Person{id=1,Name="Jon Skeet"}, new Person{id=2,Name="Marc Gravell"}, new Person{id=3,Name="Lasse"} }; void FindPersonByID(int id) { gurus.FindAll(delegate(Person x) { return x.id == id; }); } The variable id is declared in the scope of FindPersonByID() but t we still can access the local variable id inside the anonymous function (i.e) delegate(Person x) { return x.id == id; } (1) Is my understanding of closure is correct ? (2) What are the aditional advantages can we get from closures?

  • Ugly thing and advantage of anonymos method -C#

    - by nettguy
    I was asked to explain the ugly thing and advantages of anonymous method. I explained possibly Ugly thing anonymous methods turning quickly into spaghetti code. Advantages We can produce thread safe code using anonymous method :Example static List<string> Names = new List<string>( new string[] { "Jon Skeet", "Marc Gravell", "David", "Bill Gates" }); static List<string> FindNamesStartingWith(string startingText) { return Names.FindAll( delegate(string name) { return name.StartsWith(startingText); }); } But really i did not know whether it is thread safe or not.I was asked to justify it. Can any one help me to understand (1) advantages of anonymous methods (2) Is the above code thread safe or not?

  • Sync Services With AddressBook

    - by Marcus
    Hi, I've developed an application to sync the Mac address book with another application. I was using an NSNotification (kABDatabaseChangedExternallyNotification) which are sent every time the address book is edited to do the syncing. However I found that if I 'overloaded' the address book (by adding 20 records really quickly or something) I didn't get all of the notifications. I have since found the Sync Services framework which seems to be aimed at my kind of application and it seems to work fine. The problem is that the changes are not 'pushed' to me in the same was as an NSNotification - I have to sync every 5 minutes or so. And, from what I can understand, I shouldn't use the AddressBook API directly but push changes back through sync services. This means that changes are not instant but lagged by how often address book/my app syncs. Is there any way to make it instant? or to use the NSNotifications reliably? Thanks for your time, Marc

  • Open source / commercial alternative for jiffy.js?

    - by Marcel
    Hi, we'd like to measure "client side web site performance". i.e. we would like to have answers to the following questions: how long did it takt to load and render a webpage (including alle graphics scripts etc.) this bundled with additional informations like user-agent, operating system etc. a graphical tool to analyze the data would be perfect I know jiffy ( http://code.google.com/p/jiffy-web/wiki/Jiffy_js ) but that isn't maintained anymore. I would prefer either a hosted solution (like google analytics) or a java based solution that we deploy for ourselves. Do you know something like that? Thanks, Marc

  • Cannot run file_get_contents() on PHP 5.2.9-2

    - by Obay
    Hello, I am having the same problem as described below. http://marc.info/?l=php-general&m=124104032703506 The guy answered his own question by: "Sorry, didn't pay attention to the registered streams :-( You need to install a PHP package with ssl or compile it with --with-openssl." What does that mean? I'm fairly new to all this stuff and I don't quite understand what he was talking about, (e.g. registered streams, ssl). We have another server that has SSL. Does he mean that if I just transfer to that server, problem solved? Or is there anything else I need to consider? Can you please help me out? Any help is much appreciated :)

  • Git pull error: unable to create temporary sha1 filename

    - by gnus.es
    Hi everyone, I've got a small git repo setup with the only real purpose to be able to develop locally on several machines (work, home, laptop). Thus I have one branch and I commit/push once I leave a computer, pull once I sit down at the next. Has worked fine, up to now that is. Now when I pull on my 'live test' machine, I get the following: remote: Counting objects: 38, done. remote: Compressiremote: ng objects: 100% (20/20), done. remote: Total 20 (delta 17), reused 0 (delta 0) error: unable to create temporary sha1 filename .git/objects/ed: File exists fatal: failed to write object fatal: unpack-objects failed Searching around the net the only real answer I could find was the following: http://marc.info/?l=git&m=122720741928774&w=2 which basically states that this is a bogus error that's on top of the pile and thus says nothing about what really is wrong. Where do I go from here to find out what is wrong? Edit: Removed the local copy and re-cloned

  • ns-2 c++ file changes

    - by stanigator
    I have just installed a network simulator program called ns-2 and I am trying to familiarize myself with it by going through the tutorial by Marc Greis. When I get to the stage where I'm messing around with C++ source files and related program C++ source files as stated in http://www.isi.edu/nsnam/ns/tutorial/index.html, I don't know what to do as there are enough inconsistencies between the version of ns-2 that I downloaded (which is the latest stable build) and the guide. What would your recommendations in this case, as I don't know what to do with it as a newbie? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Roll your own free .NET technical conference

    - by Brian Schroer
    If you can’t get to a conference, let the conference come to you! There are a ton of free recorded conference presentations online… Microsoft TechEd Let’s start with the proverbial 800 pound gorilla. Recent TechEds have recorded the majority of presentations and made them available online the next day. Check out presentations from last month’s TechEd North America 2012 or last week’s TechEd Europe 2012. If you start at http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd, you can also drill down to presentations from prior years or from other regional TechEds (Australia, New Zealand, etc.) The top presentations from my “View Queue”: Damian Edwards: Microsoft ASP.NET and the Realtime Web (SignalR) Jennifer Smith: Design for Non-Designers Scott Hunter: ASP.NET Roadmap: One ASP.NET – Web Forms, MVC, Web API, and more Daniel Roth: Building HTTP Services with ASP.NET Web API Benjamin Day: Scrum Under a Waterfall NDC The Norwegian Developer Conference site has the most interesting presentations, in my opinion. You can find the videos from the June 2012 conference at that link. The 2011 and 2010 pages have a lot of presentations that are still relevant also. My View Queue Top 5: Shay Friedman: Roslyn... hmmmm... what? Hadi Hariri: Just ‘cause it’s JavaScript, doesn’t give you a license to write rubbish Paul Betts: Introduction to Rx Greg Young: How to get productive in a project in 24 hours Michael Feathers: Deep Design Lessons ØREDEV Travelling on from Norway to Sweden... I don’t know why, but the Scandinavians seem to have this conference thing figured out. ØREDEV happens each November, and you can find videos here and here. My View Queue Top 5: Marc Gravell: Web Performance Triage Robby Ingebretsen: Fonts, Form and Function: A Primer on Digital Typography Jon Skeet: Async 101 Chris Patterson: Hacking Developer Productivity Gary Short: .NET Collections Deep Dive aspConf - The Virtual ASP.NET Conference Formerly known as “mvcConf”, this one’s a little different. It’s a conference that takes place completely on the web. The next one’s happening July 17-18, and it’s not too late to register (It’s free!). Check out the recordings from February 2011 and July 2010. It’s two years old and talks about ASP.NET MVC2, but most of it is still applicable, and Jimmy Bogard’s Put Your Controllers On a Diet presentation is the most useful technical talk I have ever seen. CodeStock Videos from the 2011 edition of this Tennessee conference are available. Presentations from last month’s 2012 conference should be available soon here. I’m looking forward to watching Matt Honeycutt’s Build Your Own Application Framework with ASP.NET MVC 3. UserGroup.tv User Group.tv was founded in January of 2011 by Shawn Weisfeld, with the mission of providing User Group content online for free. You can search by date, group, speaker and category tags. My View Queue Top 5: Sergey Rathon & Ian Henehan: UI Test Automation with Selenium Rob Vettor: The Repository Pattern Latish Seghal: The .NET Ninja’s Toolbelt Amir Rajan: Get Things Done With Dynamic ASP.NET MVC Jeffrey Richter: .NET Nuggets – Houston TechFest Keynote

  • News, Perspektiven und jede Menge Gesprächsstoff - Der Oracle Partner Day 2012

    - by A&C Redaktion
