• Why maven so slow compared to automake?

  I have a Maven project consists of around 100 modules. I have reason to decompose the project to so many modules, and I don't think I should merge them in order to speed up the build process. I have read a lot of projects by other people, e.g., the Maven project itself, and Apache Archiva, and Hudson project, they all consists of a lot of modules, nearly 100 maybe, more or less. The problem is, to build them all need so much time, 3 hours for the first time build (this is acceptable because a lot of artifacts to download), and 15 minutes for the second build (this is not acceptable). For automake, things are similarly, the first time you need to configure the project, to prepare the magical config.h file, it's far more complex then what maven does. But it's still fast, maybe 10 seconds on my Debian box. After then, make install requires maybe 10 minutes for the first time build. However, when everything get prepared, the .o object files are generated, they don't have to be rebuild at all for the second time build. (In Maven, everything rebuild at everytime.) I'm very wondering, how guys working for Maven projects can bare this long time for each build, I'm just can't sit down calmly during each time Maven build, it took too long time, really.

• Compiling Assembly Manually [migrated]

  I am having trouble with translating a specific line in assembly to machine code for the Nios II. I have successfully compiled these lines: START_TIMER = 0xF68C r0 = 0x0 r8 = 0x8 label = 50000 addi r8, r8, %lo(label) - 01000 01000 1100001101010000 000100 subi r8, r8, 1 - 01000 01000 1111111111111111 000100 bne r8, r0, START_TIMER - 01000 00000 1111011010001100 011110 The line in question that I have trouble with is this one: orhi r8, r0, %hiadj(label) As explained in the handbook linked above, "%lo" means "Extract bits [15..0] of immed32" and "%hiadj" means "Extract bits [31..16] and adds bit 15 of immed32". However, 50000 in binary is 1100001101010000, and is therefore a 16 bit number. As far as I can see, it doesn't contain any bits between 16 and 31. I tried with 0000000000000001, but it's incorrect. What am I doing wrong?

• Maven deploy:deploy-file not found due to version/timestamp appended to jar

  I'm having a problem using deploy:deploy-file with snapshots I'd like some advice on please. I have 2 projects; 1) Ant based and 2) the other Maven based that consumes the jars of the other project via Archiva. I've added a target to the Ant project to deploy snapshots on every successful build during our iteration. The problem is the Maven project cannot find them because the name of the dependency has a timestamp appended like so: someJar-1.0-20100407.171211-1.jar Here is the Ant target: <exec executable="${maven.bin}" dir="../lib"> <arg value="deploy:deploy-file" /> <arg value="-DgroupId=com.my.package" /><arg value="-DartifactId=${ant.project.name}" /> <arg value="-Dversion=${manifest.implementation.version}-SNAPSHOT" /> <arg value="-Dpackaging=jar" /> <arg value="-Dfile=../lib/${ant.project.name}-${manifest.implementation.version}-SNAPSHOT.jar" /> <arg value="-Durl=http://archiva.xxx.com/archiva/repository/snapshots" /> <arg value="-DrepositoryId=snapshots" /> </exec> I have a similar Ant target for releases and this works fine. • Using maven to distribute a swing application that can have each dependency individually tracked

  I'm moving my project to Maven and eventually OSGi. I currently distribute the project is a large Zip file with all the dependencies. Although my projects code is only 20% of the total package I have to redistribute all the dependency. With smaller independent modules this may be even less. Looking here on stack overflow it seems that to keep my current plan the maven-assembly-plugin should do the trick. I was considering having a base installer that would look at a XML manifest, then collect all the libraries that needed to be updated. This would mean that libraries that change occasionally would be downloaded less often. This also makes since for something like OSGi plugins (which could have independent release schedules). In essence I want my software to look and manage individual libraries, and download on demand (based on the manifest). I was wondering if there is a "maven way" of generating this Manifest and publishing all the libraries to a website? I believe the deploy life-cycle would do the second step. As an alternative, is there a OpenSource Java library that does this type of deployment? I don't want to embed Maven or something larger with the distributed code. The application is not for coders, the simpler the better, and the smaller the installer the better.

• Using Maven for maintaining product documentation

  We are using Maven for building a Java server-style application. It consists of several modules (in a single Maven "reactor") which can be plugged together to generate a final product (essentially a .jar) with the features enabled that the customer needs. All the internals are documented using JavaDoc and all, but that's not what you can give to the customer to find out how to get the thing running. Currently we have an OpenOffice document which serves as end-user documentation. I'd like to integrate this documentation into the Maven build process where each module's documentation is maintained (hand-edited) together with the Module's sources and the final document can reference the required Module documentation sections, add some friendly foreword and, if possible at all, can reference into the JavaDocs. Ultimately, the document should be output as a PDF. Is there any experience on Maven plugins can help with this? Is DocBook the right tool? Maybe Latex? Or something completely different? A sound "stick with OpenOffice and some text blocks" could be an answer, too.

• Maven (EJB) project with client and server artifacts

  Here's my variation on the "multiple artifacts from Maven build" question: I'm porting from Ant to Maven. My application is an EJB server that is packaged as an EAR, but it also exposes a client JAR for use by other client apps. This jar contains the EJB interfaces, facade class and some helpers. I know that the Maven way is to have one artifact per project (POM); however, both artifacts (server EAR and client JAR) need to be built from the same source tree - server and client share, for example, the EJB and 'home' interfaces. How do I do this in Maven? Do I have one project containing two POMs, say server-pom.xml & client-pom.xml? I was thinking I could also have a parent POM (pom.xml) that can be used to build both client and server with one foul swoop? However, the lifecycles diverge after the 'package' phase, since the server has to go through assembly (tar/gzip), while the client is done after 'package' and can simply be installed into the repository. Any advice/experience on the best way to approach this?

• Source folders for a maven project in eclipse

  Hello all, I have a that uses maven... and I want to put it in my working environment with eclipse(Galileo)... the project is in a svn server, and I can create check out the project and everything looks OK. I even can run the unit test and everything is working there. However, now that everything is there I wanted to work in the code, and oh surprise there are no packages in my project... I mean all the source code is in the src folder and browsing through it i can see all my files, ut if I open the files from there, the files are opened as text files with no coloring, but worst no help at all about errors in compilation. I don't know what im I doing wrong now, because I had the same project in other machine and it was working well. So here is what I did, please let me know if you notice if I did something wrong, miss any steps or anything that can help me: In the SVN Repository (Using subclipse 1.6.10) I added my SVN Repository Browsed to the folder where I have the pom file Right Click Check out as a Maven project...(Using m2eclipse 0.10.020100209) Used the default options and finish. The projects were created with no problem. I said projects because this maven project has modules, and each module became a project in eclipse. Back in the java perspective, Right click in the project, Run as maven test(Using JWebUnitTest, because I am testing a servlet) BUILD SUCCESS!! But as I said there is not packages so I can't really develop in this environment. Any help?? Thanks!

• Releasing from development into production in maven

  Hi all, I'm confused about the use of maven in development and production environments - I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing. Grateful for any help.. I set up maven inside eclipse on my local machine and wrote some software. I really like how it's made things like including dependent jars very easy. So that's my development environment. But now I want to release the project to production on a remote server. I've searched the documentation, but I can't figure out how it's supposed to work or what the maven best practice is.. Are you supposed to: a) Also be running maven on your production environment, and upload all your files to your production environment and rebuild your project there? (Something in me baulks at the idea of rebuilding 'released' code on the production server, so I'm fairly sure this isn't right..) b) use mvn:package to create your jar file and then copy that up to production? (But then what of all those nice dependencies? Isn't there a danger that your tested code is now going to be running against different versions of the dependent jars in the production environment, possibly breaking your code? Or missing a jar..?) c) Something else that I'm not figuring out.. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Bug fix for Eclipse runtime plugin

  This blog is intended to inform about bug fix that solves this issue. Before continuing further, one important note – the linux and mac users do not need to read further because this bug appears only on Windows.  The problem was that the runtime plugin registered new runtime and server each time the Eclipse started. Users ended up with server view looking like this: I have created new runtime plugin which is now available at the update site http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/indigo (or the same ending with juno for Juno users). You will still need to unistall the buggy plugin and (optionally but recommended) to remove runtimes created by this plugin. Here is the guide how to install bugfix: Uninstall buggy runtime plugin via menu Help->About Eclipse->Installation details. Remove runtimes created by old plugin – via Window->Preferences->Server->Runtime Environment. After pressing remove button you may be asked if you want to remove also the servers based on runtime being removed. Recommended is to do so. Now you can install new runtime plugin. Go to Help->Install New Software. You may ask why I haven‘t provided the update for buggy runtime which could be installed via Check for updates feature of Eclipse. It has two main reasons: The bug fix is needed only for Windows users so I didn't want to bother other users by updating working plugin. The runtime plugin has had structure that was not quite suitable for Eclipse update. This structure is now changed so future bugs (I am sure that there will be no such ;)) can be fixed by standard update. Have a good one!

• graphical interface when using assembly language

  Im looking to use assembly language to make a great game, not just an average game but a really great game. I want to learn a framework to use in assembly. I know thats not possible without learning the framework in c first. So im thinking of learning sdl in c and then learn, teach myself, how to interpret the program and run it as assembly language code which shouldnt be that hard. Then i will have a window and some graphics routines to display the game while using assembly to code everything in. I need to spend some time learning sdl and then some more time learning how to code all those statements using assembly while calling c functions and knowing what registers returned calls use and what they leave etc. My question is , Is this a good way to go or is there something better to get a graphical window display using assembly language? • Import Eclipse Plugin

  Hey everybody, I developed an Eclipse plugin (a view) using the plugin development version of Eclipse. I exported the plugin as a jar archive and now I would like import it in another version of Eclipse, but it doesn't recognize the plugin. This is my first plugin so I might have forgotten something obvious. I searched the internet for hours but didn't find anything. Does anybody know what else I have to do? Btw, the dependencies of my plugin are: org.eclipse.ui, org.eclipse.core.runtime, org.eclipse.core.filesystem, edu.tum.cs.eclipse.commons, org.eclipse.ui.ide, org.eclipse.core.resources The version I'd like to import it in is the default Eclipse for PHP Developers from eclipse.org. • Load application context problem in Maven managed spring-test TestNg

  I try to setup a project with spring-test using TestNg in Maven. The code is like: @ContextConfiguration(locations={"test-context.xml"}) public class AppTest extends AbstractTestNGSpringContextTests { @Test public void testApp() { assert true; } } A test-context.xml simply defined a bean: <bean id="app" class="org.sonatype.mavenbook.simple.App"/> I got error for Failed to load ApplicationContext when running mvn test from command line, seems it cannot find the test-context.xml file; however, I can get it run correctly inside Eclipse (with TestNg plugin). So, test-context.xml is under src/test/resources/, how do I indicate this in the pom.xml so that 'mvn test' command will work? Thanks, UPDATE: Thanks for the reply. Cannot load context file error was caused by I moved the file arround in different location since I though the classpath was the problem. So, test-context.xml is under src/test/resources/, how do I indicate this in the pom.xml so that 'mvn test' command will work? Thanks, UPDATE: Thanks for the reply.   I'm possibly writing a plugin system for a Cocoa application (Mac, not iphone). A common approach is the make each plugin a bundle, then inject the bundle into the main application. I'm concerned with the security implications of doing this, as the bundle will have complete access to the Objective-C runtime. I am especially concerned with a plugin having access to the code that handles registration and serial keys. Another plugin system we are considering is based on distributed notifications. Basically, each plugin will be a separate process, and they will communicate via distributed notifications only. Is there a way to load bundles securely (e.g. sandboxing)? If not, do you see any problems with using distributed notifications? Are there any other plugin architectures that would be better?

So i did the following: <profile> <id>deploy-db</id> <build> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId> <version>1.1.1</version> </plugin> </plugins> <pluginManagement> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId> <artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId> <version>1.1.1</version> <executions> <execution> <phase>validate</phase> <goals> <goal>exec</goal> </goals> <inherited>false</inherited> </execution> </executions> <configuration> <executable>../database/schemas/import_databases.bat</executable> </configuration> </plugin> </plugins> </pluginManagement> </build> </profile> when i run the mvn verify -Pdeploy-db from the root I get this script executed over and over again in each of my modules. I want it to be executed only once, in the root module. What is there that I am missing ? Thanks

• C# DLL reference changes version and becomes unloadable (Plugin-system)

  I will try to keep this as simple as possible. I have a rather simple plugin system that has run into a problem. I have 2 assemblies: Host.exe Plugin.dll Plugin.dll references Host.exe (which contains interfaces and classes that Plugin.dll implement and use). At runtime, Host.exe loads Plugin.dll through reflection and this works great. Except when Host.exe updates and gets a new version number. Then I get an error once I try to load Plugin.dll, saying that Host.exe (with the old version number) can't be found. This means I have to rebuild all plugins every time Host.exe changes build number. Anyone got a solution to this?

  i am on a mac (10.6.3) with snow leopard. i hear that the assembly language i work with has to be valid with the chipset that you use. i am completly new to this i have a basic background in C and Objective-C programming and an almost strong background in php. Ive always wanted to see what assembly is all about. the tutorial ill be looking at is by VTC via (http://www.vtc.com/products/Assembly-Language-Programming-Tutorials.htm). what i want to know is are the tutorials that im about to do compatible with the version of mac that i have? sorry i am completly new to this language although i do recall studying some of it way way back in the day. i do have xcode and what i'm wondering is what kind of document would i open in xcode to work with assembly and does the mac have a built in hex editor (when it comes time to needing it)? thanks

• Calling SDL/OpenGL from Assembly code on Linux

  I'm write a simple graphic-based program in Assembly for learning purpose; for this, I intended to use either OpenGL or SDL. I'm trying to call OpenGL/SDL's function from assembly. The problem is, unlike many assembly and OpenGL/SDL tutorials I found in the internet, the OpenGL/SDL in my machine apparently doesn't use C calling convention. I wrote a simple program in C, compile it to assembly (using -S switch), and apparently the assembly code that is generated by GCC calls the OpenGL/SDL functions by passing parameters in the registers instead of being pushed to the stack. Now, the question is, how do I determine how to pass arguments to these OpenGL/SDL functions? That is, how do I figure out which argument corresponds to which registers? Obviously since GCC can compile C code to call OpenGL/SDL, so therefore there must be a way to figure out the correspondence between function arguments and registers. In C calling conventions, the rule is easy, push parameters backwards and return value in eax/rax, I can simply read their C documentation and I can easily figure out how to pass the parameters. But how about these? Is there a way to call OpenGL/SDL using C calling convention? btw, I'm using yasm, with gcc/ld as the linker on Gentoo Linux amd64.
