• Ubuntu App Showdown: Commercial applications

  Me and a few of my friends decided to create a game for the App showdown. However, we wanted to make a commercial game out of it (for <5$). So the question is: If I want to submit a commercial app, what exactly do I have to do? We would be willing to provide it as open source software but want to sell it in USC anyway. How should I submit the app if we can do that? (Note: we would only open source if it's required, but would prefer to only share the source with the judges. Is that also possible?). Also: If I have to upload the source code to the PPA and let it build by ubuntu's build service: How do I do that with Mono-apps? It worked perfectly for other projects where I had CMakeFiles and stuff like that. But for Mono, I only have a MonoDevelop project file - how to do that right? Thanks

  I am registering as a Developer to sell paid applications on the Google Play store and have run into a slight issue: After I paid, I clicked on "Setup merchant details" link. I filled out the business address section, but in the "Public contact" section, Google says this: How can your customers get in touch with you? This information will be made available to your customers when they make a purchase. I work from home. I do not want customers knowing my home address, nor do I want it displayed anywhere online or even accessible by anyone. Should I just enter NA in each of the following fields? Surely Google understands that we have a right to keep such things private? How can I get around this while not getting my account suspended or risk not being approved?

• What is the name for landing pages that are one long page?

  Really don't see them much anymore, but here's an example of what I mean: From comments: These are "high pressure" sales pages, design to overload the user with information, sell them on the belief that what they're buying is what they need, normally have a lot of testimonials, highlighted text, etc. The pages I'm talking about are not user friendly, they're aggressive sales pitches designed to target users wanting to belief the webpage they just landed on will solve there problems for an "affordable" price. Here's an example: www_landingpagecashmachine_com (remove the underscores, since I'm attempting to avoid linking to a site like that...) Bonus points: if you're able to tell me the name of the guy/company that popularized these types of pages; recall hearing about his company years ago, after he died in a crash while racing on a track with his Ferrari club on the west coast of the US. (Update: Appears Corey Rudl was the guy's name, and his company was called "The Internet Marketing Center." Even with that info, I've still been unable to find the name for these type of pages.)

• Ubuntu DVR - what are the options?

  According to my research, the best solution to use ubuntu server as a DVR system would be ZoneMinder. is there any alternatives to zoneminder out there? I'm not really happy it only has a web interface to control/view my cameras. And it doesn't have an option to record video stream non-stop. Am I missing something in its configuration? And the thing I really disappointed, I cant find a way to control my PTZ camera with it. what do manufacturers sell along with their standalone linux powered dvr systems?

In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

• What file manager/uploader do you use with your embeded wysiwyg editor ?

  I am looking for a wysiwyg editor to allow user to edit part of their website. I already worked with TinyMCE, and heard about CKEditor, which both look great. However, they both lack a free (PHP) file manager/uploader, as they sell their own tool to make some money. I found a few free alternatives for TinyMCE, the best one (for my needs) being PHP Letter's one, but I was wondering about what the community uses ? Do you buy the "official" file manager ? Do you code your own ? Or do you have a great (free) alternative ?

• Google Keyword Competition rating

  Google offers a Keyword application that allows me to see the number of time a particular query has been made in Google. There is a column in the results named "Competition" (Actually its Concurrence in French, I'm just translating). Its a rating from 0 to 1, as in percentage. What indicator is that? EDIT * Is this something useful I should rely on? I'm not sure about how to interpret this data. Should I go for less competitive keywords with a lower number of searches or not worry about it and go for the highly searched keywords anyway? Is 50% considered high? what about 75% ? I have a very niche market that sell expensive offline services, so the very long tail is my goal (I assume). If you didn't already figured out, I'm very new to SEO =)

• E-commerce + CMS: 2 sites or one?

  Ok, let's say that a customer already has a CMS managed web site but now wants to sell goods online using an E-commerce platform (Magento in this case). My question is, does it make any difference between choosing to have just one site running both CMS and E-commerce (www.mycompany.com, or to have one site for the CMS (www.mycompany.com) and another (www.mycompany-shop.com) for E-commerce? I'd like to know the pros and cons of these approaches, so that I can advice the customer for the best. --EDIT I forgot to say that I'd prefer to have 2 separated web sites. This way I shouldn't have to learn how to integrate them together (one in Python, the other in PHP).

• What kind of spam is this?

  I realize this is a pretty vague question, but I occasionally get spam messages through my contact form on a Drupal 6 site. The contact form does not have any anti-spam protection (i.e. math question). The messages I get are all very similar and just jumbled junk, like below, so I think they're all from the same source. Example: ylsaf0V bpsdfuxnhjjd, [url=http://wwgfsggzgyjyjm.com/]wwgrfgzrgsjyjm[/url], [link=http://xmgvyghcuufvb.com/]xmjyhvyjyfjirovb[/link], http://frgxmdghrgruhfc.com/ Anyway, I'm just wondering what the point of such a message is. All the links are dead, it's illegible, and it's not trying to sell me a product or get me to do anything, so I'm a bit perplexed. Is there any way to tell where they're coming from? And how concerned should I be? To be clear, I'm not asking how to avoid them, I realize just adding a simple math challenge or captcha would likely do the job.

The goal is to monitor incoming bug reports and reduce them, allow never ending features and get ready for scaling 10x. The phrases "test-driven-development" and "continuous-integration" are not even understood by the team cause they were all in the first 2 year product race. Tech team size is 5.   I already bought a domain name .com on godaddy for my company. I would like to reserve the same name with country specific domain extention, but not sure where to buy them and how to do it. Here are the ones that I would like to buy: Europe: fr, co.uk, de, ch, es, it, nl, se, no, ru australia: com.au asia: sg Godaddy has all except 1 in europe, australia and singapore. Should I find a website that sell all of them or should I buy some of them in godaddy and others elsewhere? Any suggestions where to buy them? Until now i've always buy .com domain names only so not sure how to do it. Thanks

• Multiple domains

  I got 6 domains : company.ca and company.com (because both where free, but we are a canadian company but can do business with the rest of the world). Then, we sell sportwear because of the company name is totally unknown to the world. Our product is we have bought product specific domain : chandails.ca and t-shirt.ca as well as shorts.ca and shorts.com. So those 6 domains are mine. Now what is the best way to do? Now all are 301 redirect to the main company name (.com) or make micro-site, super simple one page optimized for just shirt and one for shorts, then tell people to know more, go to the main site. Because now, I cannot really find the benefit of the search word in domain name edge if never somebody see something in that domain... I got confused and don't find strait answer to this question.

• Copyrighting software, templates, etc. under real name or screen name?

  My question is hopefully simple--should I copyright my work (art, software, web design, etc.) under my real name or my screen name? My real name and screen name are also easily connected with a bit of searching, so does it really matter in the end? I'm not a professional (at this point). I read this article: Is it a bad idea to sell Android apps in the Android Market under your real name? and they recommended releasing on the app market under a company name. I also read this article: On what name should I claim copyright in open source software?, but that didn't answer my question. • What is the best way to have the same website in multiple domains?

  I would like to have the same website to sell a specific product, in multiple domains , to take advantage of keywords matching the domain name, for several different searches. However, I understand that having the same content in multiple sites will unleash the wrath of Google. If I have a redirect from all domains minus one, to that last one, do I still get any bonus for the "magic exact domain match jackpot"? Same question applies to canonical URLs... • Resources for a fighting game

  As the title says, I need resources for a 2D fighting game for the PC. The game is being made by me and two close friends. I'm thinking of using the FlatRedBall engine and either Allegro Sprite Editor or Amiga DPaint for the sprites, but I don't know is there is anything better for a more or less beginner in video game making. So my questions are as follows, what would be the best engine to use so that we could also sell the game later on, (I don't really care what language I'd have to use) and what would be the best thing to use for sprite creating? • Whats the Quickest and Cheapest Solution to setup a Affiliate Program for an Online Product?

  I have a simple HTML landing page setup for an online product I want to sell. This product is a hardcover book. I want to be able to allow other people to setup their own landing pages and make a percentage of the sale from their site. What are some good payment processors or payment gateways that make setting up an affiliate system easy and fast? Clarification - When someone purchases an item, I want (whatever the payment processor is) to automatically route a percentage of that payment to the affiliate and the rest to the original author.) Are there any payment frameworks that already do this? I've found a few sites that let you do this, but they seem to restrict you to digital purchases only. However, my sites is selling a ship-able product and the affiliate system needs to support this.

• Do big domain sellers ever stop renewing their domains? [on hold]

  There are many companies out there who register tons of domains that they have no plans to use except for trying to sell them for a ridiculously high price. One domain name in particular was registered in year 2000 and hasn't been in use since then other than as a temporary redirect website for about a month (when checking web.archive.org). It makes me furious that this behaviour has not been outlawed yet. I wonder if it's even worth to wait for a .com domain to expire anymore? Do you have any success stories to share?
