• Converting a constantly changing scalar value to a changing interval or frequency

  Although I'm coding in Objective C, this is more of a general programming question. What is the best way to convert a constantly changing scalar value to a changing interval or frequency? Right now every time the scalar value changes I am destroying the NSInterval ie [self.myTimer invalidate]; self.myTimer = nil; and creating a new one, but this seems like a VERY expensive way to achieve my goal, since the changing scalar value in my case represents the horizontal velocity of a swipe. For a rough analogy, think of the speed of a swipe being reflected in a visual metronome, the faster you swipe, the higher(shorter interval) the frequency of the metronome.

• Third party Application's Idle Session expiry

  We have a third party application running. It shows login dialog when idle for 20 minutes. We need to prevent the application to display login screen. We do not have any idea how idle state is handled internally in that application. We have done the follwoing with no luck. Created an small application in c# which focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and send a BM_CLICK message to one of its child window. Does not work. focus it after every 5 minutes (using SetForegroundWindow()) and move the cursor few pixels then restore cursor at its previous position. This does not work too! Is there any other way to achieve the goal?

• IL emit - operation could destabilize runtime when storing then loading

  Hey, so I have the following IL: il.Emit(OpCodes.Ldarg_0); il.Emit(OpCodes.Ret); Which works fine. It basically returns the argument given. This, however: il.Emit(OpCodes.Ldarg_0); il.Emit(OpCodes.Stloc_0); il.Emit(OpCodes.Ldloc_0); il.Emit(OpCodes.Ret); Does not work. It crashes with the exception "Operation could destabilize the runtime.". Now, I know that the purpose of that is useless but I'm trying to reach my goal by small steps. Why does that not work?

• VLC player event catch

  In my C# application i need to trigger some events when a VLC player (preferably) starts playback (a play button is pressed in VLC for example).Tried Windows Media Player classic with Microsoft Spy++ and observed messages that are sent when playback starts\repeats but i don't know how i could "catch" those messages in my C# code.So my question: is there any way to hook up to event in VLC (or WMP) and get notified about playback status (play, stop, start of repeat). My goal is to create a C# function that waits for start of playback event in player and then triggers some actions in my application (this should also happen when playback ends and starts repeating). What approach should i take here? Just to clearify: I don't want to embedded a new instance of VLC in my app, but instead control/read the "real" full version of VLC, started seperatly by the user

  Hi, Assume I have an order_dummy table where order_dummy_id, order_id, user_id, book_id, author_id are stored. You may complain the logic of my table but I somehow need to do it that way. I want to execute following queries. SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 1 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 2 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 AND book_id = 3 ORDER BY `order_dummy_id` DESC LIMIT 1 Please keep in mind that several numbers of same book is included in one order. Therefore, I list order_dummy_id by descending and limit 1 so only LATEST ORDER of A BOOK is shown. But my goal is to show other books in that way in one table. I used group by like this ... SELECT * FROM order_dummy WHERE order_id = 1 AND user_id = 1 GROUP BY book_id but it only shows order_dummy_id with ascending result. I have no idea anymore. Looking forward your kindness help!

• Add version control to existing SQL Server database

  I am part of a development team currently working with a database that does not have any kind of source control. We work with SQL Server 2008 R2 and have always managed the DB directly with SSMS. It now has ~340 tables and ~1600 stored procedures, plus a few triggers and views, so it is not a small DB. My goal is to have the DB under version control, so I have been reading articles, like Scott Allen's series (http://bitly.com/9cJmGR) and many old SO related questions. But I am still unable to decide on how to proceed. What I'm thinking of is to script the database schema in one file, then procedures, triggers and views in one file each. Then keep everything versioned under Mercurial. But of course, every member of the team can access SSMS and directly change the schema and procedures, with the possibility that any of us can forget to replicate those changes in the versioned files. What better options are there? And, did I forget any element worth having source control of?

  Hi folks, My next project will be all about language tools, parsing and such. Because of that reason I've decided to write a simple language which can be used for video editing. So instead of those desktop applications (Sony vegas, Adobe Premiere, ..) it's basically a language where you define the effects and all and it will generate a video for you. Since I've got no experience in this kind of business I need some help. The goal of the project is to create a simple language which is able to do some basic things (such as text fading in, etc). I am looking for articles/projects/blogs/whatever related with this which could help me writing this language.   On my system I have two versions of Python (to call them I type python and python2 in the command line). When I use the first version of Python, I cannot import sklearn module but I can do it in the second version of Python. I would like to use the first version of python (because other modules are available there) and, at the same time, I would like to be able to import sklearn from this version of Python. My solution was to use: import sys sys.path.append('location_of_the_sklearn_module') To find the location of the sklearn module I started a python session (using the second version of python, in which sklearn works). The I type: import sklearn sklearn.__file__ As a result I got: /home/name/my_name/numpy/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/sklearn/__init__.pyc In the session of the first version of Python I tried: import sys sys.path.append('/home/name/my_name/numpy/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/sklearn') import sklearn Unfortunately it did not work. As a result I got: ImportError: No module named sklearn Does anybody know what I am doing wrong and if it is possible to reach the goal in the way I try?

  I have got a table in access that I loop through using a DAO recordset. For every recordset I take a bunch of data to an excel spreadsheet and run it through a model in excel. This produces a bunch of results in excel which are calculated in named cells. I want to be able to update the current recordset in access with these results but am having a tough time doing it.   Is there any way to write a VS Add-In or something else that would allow me to be able to link files to an ASPX page in ASP.NET. My goal is to be able to have this extra file created with every ASPX page, and then use a custom MS Build Task to analyze those files and do some stuff. So for example, when I created "MyPage.aspx", I'd actually see these files on disk... MyPage.aspx MyPage.aspx.cs MyPage.aspx.designer.cs MyPage.aspx.MyExtension I want to be able to see the file when I expand a page and be able to edit the file. Possible?

• Rails - Active Record :conditions overrides :select

  I have a fairly large model and I want to retrieve only a select set of fields for each record in order to keep the JSON string I am building small. Using :select with find works great but my key goal is to use conditional logic with an associated model. Is the only way to do this really with a lamda in a named scope? I'm dreading that perhaps unnecessarily but I'd like to understand if there is a way to make the :select work with a condition. This works: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar' When I try this: @sites = Site.find :all, :select => 'id,foo,bar', :include => [:relatedmodel], :conditions => ["relatedmodel.type in (?)", params[:filters]] The condition works but each record includes all of the Site attributes which makes my JSON string way way too large.   I want to build my program with LSB C++ Compiler from the Linux Standard Base http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/lsb. Program depends on the Boost library, built with gcc 4.4 version. Compilation fails. Is it possible to build the Boost library with LSB C++ Compiler? Alternatively, is it possible to build the Boost library with some old gcc version, what version is recommended? My final goal is to get my executable and third-party Boost libraries running on most Linux distributions. Generally, what can be done to get better binary compatibility for Linux distributions, developing C++ closed-source application depending on the Boost library?

  Given a table that has three columns ID (Primary Key, not-autoincrementing) GroupID SomeValue I am trying to write a single SQL INSERT INTO statement that will make a copy of every row that has one GroupID into a new GroupID. Example beginning table: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b Goal after I run a simple INSERT INTO statement: ID | GroupID | SomeValue ------------------------ 1 | 1 | a 2 | 1 | b 3 | 2 | a 4 | 2 | b I thought I could do something like: INSERT INTO MyTable ( [ID] ,[GroupID] ,[SomeValue] ) ( SELECT (SELECT MAX(ID) + 1 FROM MyTable) ,@NewGroupID ,[SomeValue] FROM MyTable WHERE ID = @OriginalGroupID ) This causes a PrimaryKey violation since it will end up reusing the same Max(ID)+1 value multiple times as it seems. Is my only recourse to a bunch of INSERT statements in a T-SQL WHILE statement that has an incrementing Counter value? I also don't have the option of turning the ID into an auto-incrementing Identity column since that would breaking code I don't have source for.

• GameKit server disconnect makes session invalid

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to build a 4 player multiplayer game using GameKit. I tried many things and I'm currently using client/server mode, meaning that I have 1 session in GKSessionModeServer and 3 other sessions connecting to this one in GKSessionModeClient. My goal is, that when a user leaves the game or gets disconnected for whatever reason, that the others can continue their game. So far this works if any of the Clients leave the game, but if the Sevrer leaves the game, send and receive calls are not reaching the other peers anymore. I tried the same with 4 peers in GKSessionModePeer with the same result (where the player who accepts connections cannot quit). Does anyone had better success in making this work? Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

• How do i get the default gateway in LINUX given the destination?

I'm trying to get the default gateway, using the destination 0.0.0.0 i used this command: netstat -rn | grep 0.0.0.0 and it returns this list: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 10.9.9.17 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 133.88.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 133.88.31.70 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0 My goal here is to ping the default gateway using destination 0.0.0.0; thus, that is "133.88.31.70"; but this one returns a list because of using 'grep'. Question is: How do i get the default gateway only? I will need it for my bash script to identify if net connection is up or not. Any answers will be much appreciated. =)

For example, a lot of ant manuals suggest the following list of targets: init clean compile build jar test javadoc dist deploy webapp What is the most large build file you met in your life? How many targets did it have and what are they? How often do you need more than predefined set of targets? The goal is to develop some conventions to have standard buildfile template for any project having the notion of the maven-like approach in mind (when a lot of work happens under the cover, convention over configuration). Also it would be great if you know the place where one can find collection of different buildfiles to choose or to get inspired from.

Currently, one span.nNumber has a total digits of the two numbers (123456) and the next span.nNumber contains digits only from another number (456).
