• Help with DB Structure, vOD site

  I have a video on demand style site that hosts series of videos under different modules. However with the way I have designed the database it is proving to be very slow. I have asked this question before and someone suggested indexing, but i cannot seem to get my head around it. But I would like someone to help with the structure of the database here to see if it can be improved. The core table is Videos: ID bigint(20) (primary key, auto-increment) pID text airdate text title text subject mediumtext url mediumtext mID int(11) vID int(11) sID int(11) pID is a unique 5 digit string to each video that is a shorthand identifier. Airdate is the TS, (stored in text format, right there maybe I should change that to TIMESTAMP AUTO UPDATE), title is self explanatory, subject is self explanatory, url is the hard link on the site to the video, mID is joined to another table for the module title, vID is joined to another table for the language of the video, (english, russian, etc) and sID is the summary for the module, a paragraph stored in an external database. The slowest part of the website is the logging part of it. I store the data in another table called 'Hits': id mediumint(10) (primary key, auto-increment) progID text ts int(10) Again, here (this was all made a while ago) but my Timestamp (ts) is an INT instead of ON UPDATE CURRENT TIMESTAMP, which I guess it should be. However This table is now 47,492 rows long and the script that I wrote to process it is very very slow, so slow in fact that it times out. A row is added to this table each time a user clicks 'Play' on the website and then so the progID is the same as the pID, and it logs the php time() timestamp in ts. Basically I load the entire database of 'Hits' into an array and count the hits in each day using the TS column. I am guessing (i'm quite slow at all this, but I had no idea this would happen when I built the thing) that this is possibly the worst way to go about this. So my questions are as follows: Is there a better way of structuring the 'Videos' table, is so, what do you suggest? Is there a better way of structuring 'hits', if so, please help/tell me! Or is it the fact that my tables are fine and the PHP coding is crappy?

• stuck in busybox after update

  I should start out by saying that I am not very tech savvy and have done my best to understand what is going on here from reading other people's posts and have fumbled my way through several attempted fixes without getting anywhere... I run ubuntu 12.04 on an admittedly cheap laptop from ebuyer and in spite of being cheap and not a brand laptop I have never had any major problems with it. Since updating to 12.04 when it was released the boot-up process has always been slow. Logging in takes about 30secs longer than it used to and if I closed my laptop and opened it again instead of being met with a login screen I'd be met with a black screen with a white mouse. As all of these problems had a behavior-changing fix (don't close laptop, patiently wait for login, etc.) I didn't think of reporting any of the issues. Last night when the update manager prompted me that there were updates available I duly did them as I usually do. At the time a bug report came up and I cannot remember what it said but I reported the bug as I was prompted to do. Then this morning when I started up my laptop it went through the usual sequence, GRUB, purple screen with 'ubuntu' etc. and then when it tried to boot up it went into BusyBox and I have not been able to do anything to solve this. I have tried going into the GRUB menu and starting previous versions but I come to the same point - busybox. I have borrowed another rather elderly laptop with Windows Vista to try and download Boot Repair and Ubuntu and burn them onto CD. I tried downloading boot repair five times, to laptop, CD and USB. Every time it would download and burn fine but then the windows laptop would tell me that 1% did not download properly and my laptop would not run the USB or CD upon booting. I then tried to download ubuntu and make a livecd, twice, but again was told that 1% did not download properly and again my laptop will not run ubuntu from the CD upon booting even if/when I went into the f2 menu and changed the menu priority (if that's what you call it) for booting up to make sure it was definitely trying the USB/CD first. This is the message I get from busybox: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands I have tried 'exit' but it mentions things about 'kernal panic' and 'tried to quit init!' and 'can't find /root/dev/console : no such file'. I know that the problem is probably caused by a problem with a kernal caused by the update last night, but I couldn't honestly tell you exactly what was updated and without being able to boot from a livecd I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. As I said, I am not tech savvy and have done what I can to try and find a solution to the problem but I'm starting to feel like I'm out of options. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Should I use my own public API on my site (via JS)?

  First of all, this question is far more different other 'public api questions' like this: Should a website use its own public API?, second, sorry for my English. You can find the question summarized at the bottom of this question. What I want to achieve is a big website with a public api, so who like programming (like me) and likes my website, can replicate my website's data with a much better approach (of course with some restrictions). Almost everything could be used by the public API. Because of this, I was thinking about making the whole website AJAX driven. There would be parts of the API which would be limited only to my website (domain), like login, registering. There would be only an INTERFACE on the client side, which would use the public and private API to make this interface working. The website would be ONLY CLIENT SIDE, well, I mean, the website would only use AJAX to use the api. How do I imagine this? The website would be like a mobile application, the application only sending a request to a webserver, which returns a json, the application parses it, and uses it to advance in the application. (e.g.: login) My thoughts: Pros: The whole website is built up by javascript, this means I don't need to transfer the html to the client, saving bandwidth. (I hope so) Anyone can use up the data of my website to make their own cool things. (Is this a con or pro? O_O) The public API is always in use, so I can see if there are any error. Cons: Without Javascript the website is unusable. The bad guys easily can load the server with requesting too much data (like Request Per Second 10000), but this can be countered via limiting this with some PHP code and logging. Probably much more work So the question in some words is: Should I build my website around my own api? Is it good to work only on the client side? Is this good for a big website? (e.x.: facebook, yeah facebook is a different story, but could it run with an 'architecture' like this?)

• Hyper-V Server 2012 - "No Active Network Adapter Found"

  I just installed Hyper-V Server 2012 and first thing I get when logging in to the host is "No Active Network Adapter Found". I know I have to use the following command: pnputil –i –a <inf file> I found the Realtek Network Driver for my MB for Windows 7 here: http://za.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A97_PRO/#download But there is not one for Windows 8 so I tried using the Win 7 one with PnPUtil, and I got: Failed to install the driver on any of the devices on the system: No more data is available. Does this really mean I can't use Hyper-V Server 2012 with my motherboard? This is hard to believe because I installed Windows Server 2012 directly (prior to installing Hyper-V Server 2012) on this same computer and I had internet access on that server without even configuring any drivers. Ok so I went to PowerShell from cmd and typed Get-NetIPConfiguration And it said the name of my driver (Realtek) and "Disconnected". I switched the Ethernet wire from my primary computer with my server and everything was fixed. Interestingly, my primary computer connects to the internet just fine with the wire that was previously in the server, just with much slower speed. Does anyone know what could be the difference between these 2 Ethernet wires?

• "shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service"

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server that is a Hyper-V host (Dell PowerEdge T300). Today for the first time I encountered an odd situation; i lost connection with one of the guest machines but logging on physically it seems the guest OS is still running but no longer contactable via the network. I tried to shut down the guest machine (Windows XP) but it would not shut down, getting stuck in a "Not responding" dialog box that cannot be dismissed. I used the Hyper-V management console to reset the machine and it could not get out of resetting state. I tried to save another Windows 2003 guest machine, and it would be progress with its Saving state (0%). The other running Windows 2003 guest was stuck in the logon dialog. My first suspicion is perhaps one of the Windows update patches this week (10 Nov 2011) may something to do with it, which was still pending a system restart. Well, since I could not do anything with Hyper-V i proceeded with the Windows Update restart, and now it is stuck half an hour at "Shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service" Prior to restarting I did not observe any hard disk errors reported in the system event log; doubt it is a disk-related condition. Shall I force a hard reboot? UPDATE As per answer report, it eventually restarted itself.

• iScsiPrt error event ID 5

  Event Log: "Failed to setup initiator portal. Error status is given in the dump data." This is being recorded every 3/100's of a second. We are using MS iSCSI Initiator on Windows Server 2003, Dell 2970 w/4GB (PAE). I am sure that this was configured by Dell initially. I have no idea what changes or mods were made since the company installed this machine until now. (I'm a new User so the lovely and vibrant screen images had to be removed. They were quite pretty and I am sure you would have been very moved and appreciative of them.) It appears that everything is installed correctly and the 5TB bound volume is accessible but I have never worked with iScsi before so I plead total ignorance. In searching I have found this to be a fairly sparce and bland documented subject. I'd like two things... First, to get rid of the error msg being logged. MS says it can be ignored if everything is working but it chews up resources logging it and I don't feel comfortable about any errors on my servers. I want to correct whatever is causing this problem. Secondly, being totally green to this, I would like to confirm that the setup is optimized and we are taking advantage of all features available. Although there are 3 NIC's in this machine it appears that the initiator is only configured for the Broadcom BMC5708C NetXtreme II on our 10.90.1.#, the other 2 NICS are 1GB on the 192.168.0.#. Would additional targets improve performance? If someone who is experienced in configuring the Microsoft iScsi Initiator can help I would really appreciate it since, as I mentioned, everything I have come across has not been of any value at all. • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • TSM Backup Fails with VSS

  Since we rebuilt our servers to windows servers 2008 x64 r2 we have perpetual problems with scheduled backup (shadow copy). In the Application event log, the following events are logged on both nodes: The description for Event ID 4112 from source TsmVssPlugin cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: VSS processing encountered error 'VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR' in the Volume Shadow Copy API 'AddToSnapshotSet'. For more information, see the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client error log. Re installing TSM didn't change anything and still logging same events. TSM Error log file shows following: ANS1327W The snapshot operation for 'C:' failed with error code: -1. ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered. TSM function name : BaStartSnapshot TSM function : initializeSnapshotSet() failed, check Microsoft Application event log for VSS errors TSM return code : -1

• Dell VRTX - slow cluster shared storage

  I have a brand new Dell VRTX box set up as a Failover Cluster running HA Hyper-V virtual machines. This is my first time setting up clustering, and my first time with one of these boxes, so I'm sure I've missed something. The virtual machines are experiencing high disk latency and bad performance when accessing their VHD(x) files located on a Cluster Shared Volume. The VRTX has 10 x 900 GB 10K SAS drives in RAID 6 configuration, and the VRTX has the redundant Shared PERC 8 controllers. Both blades have full access to the virtual disks. There are two M520 blades installed, each with 128 GB RAM. MPIO is configured for the PERC 8 controllers. Operating system on the blades is Server 2012 (NOT R2). The RAID 6 array is split into a small (8 GB) volume for cluster quorum witness and a large (6.5 TB) volume for a Cluster Shared Volume (mounted on the nodes as C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1) An example of slow disk access: logging into a Server 2012 VM and having Server Manager come up automatically. Disk access goes to 100%, with write speeds at 20 MB or so, read speeds of 500 KB or so, and Average Response Time of over 1000 ms, sometimes spiking at 4000-5000 ms or so. It's the latency that really worries me. Is there something specific I should look at in my configuration? It doesn't seem to matter whether I use VHD or VHDX, dynamic or static.

• Outlook 2007 unable to connect to exchange server

  I came into the office a week ago and outlook has refused to connect ever since, it just says "Disconnected" in the bottom right-hand corner. I've tried restarting it, rebooting Windows etc. I'm the only one if our office who is having this problem, so it's not a general problem with the server. Things I've tried Pinging the server via IP address and host name, both work fine Connecting via OWA, this works using the same machine name Connecting to Exchange via HTTP ("Outlook Anywhere") doesn't work None of the suggestions in this question helped, http://serverfault.com/questions/21755/can-ping-exchange-server-cant-connect-outlook-to-it Disabling Windows firewall on my laptop also has no effect. There are no items in the event viewer that indicate that anything it up. Also no permissions have changed on the server since when it worked. Update: I've just tried logging onto a completely different PC, using my domain controller user-name/password. When I setup outlook on there it also fails, so the problem isn't specific to 1 pc/outlook it's something about my particular user name, but not when using OWA? What else can I do to diagnose this, any suggestions?

• Why is iTunes starting and stopping play randomly, and how do I stop it?

  Since yesterday morning my copy of iTunes has been starting and stopping randomly. If iTunes is not running, then it opens and sometimes begins playing, other times sits idle. Eventually, after a random interval it will begin playing a song, and then stop, and so on... Needless to say, it's driving me mad. (Mac OSX, 10.6.3, on a new-ish (< 1 year old) 24" iMac) I've made five changes to my system that may or may not be connected to this: My office phone was replaced with a Linksys IP Phone, which necessitated a change to my networking; where previously my Mac was connected directly to the office network port, now it is connected through the phone. My network connection now uses auto link detection in lieu of forcing 100Mbit I unpaired my bluetooth headset. I removed the USB audio device associated with another headset. I upgraded to Safari 5. I don't use it as a primary browser, but it's often open to run web apps that I'm developing. All of these things happened in pretty close proximity to each other, so one or more of them may be the culprit. One other thing that may or may not be related; for some reason my built-in microphone is no longer picking up audio. It seems like this might be connected to the iTunes issue, because it happened around the same time. In terms of things that I've tried in order to solve this, I'm at a bit of a loss. I followed the instructions at http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2004/tn2124.html#SECLAUNCHDLOGGING to enable detailed launchd logging to see if I could track down which process was asking iTunes to open (when it's not already open) but I wasn't able to make heads or tails of the output. I'm not even sure if I'm looking in the right place, to be honest; it actually acts like something is activating the application with AppleScript, but I have no processes running that are doing that, as far as I know. I'm running a few apps that have iTunes integration: Adium, iChat with Chax, Quicksilver. None of these have been changed lately, so I consider them low risks of causing this, but it's not impossible. Moreover, I'm not using any of those features intentionally. • FTP Error: 550 Cant change directory to /: Permission denied

  I installed Pureftpd and Ispconfig3 on my server. Starting from the point I'll probably uninstall ispconfig3 and make things directly on the server, now I am so stubborn I really want to see where's the problem. I created a ftp user through ispconfig, named amdpftp. It is related to a server user named web7. It logs in with username and password, but if i try to ls, it tells me: FTP Error: 550 Cant change directory to /: Permission denied I thought many things, like: 1. It is a problem of permissions. I went to /var/www/clients/client0/web7 , it was immutable and owned by root. Chattr -i and chown web7:client0 changed permissions, but with no effect. I restored to root:root, and made it immutable again. 2. I make some mistakes in the pureftpd installation: Wrong, it works pretty fine. The pureftpd.log doesn't seem to say anything bad. 3. The pureftpd.log file is only the pureftpd one, I should also check the mysqld functionality, as it is in a mysql database that user, password and working directory are stored. I enabled logging in the my.cnf, but also in the ispconfig database operation there wasn't anything wrong. Then I mkdir testftp in /var/www, chown web7:client0, and edited amdpftp user root directory from /var/www/clients/client0/web7 into /var/www/testftp . Guess what? It worked. So, now I know: 1. The PureFtpd works pretty fine 2. The mysql ispconfig database as well 3. The username and password of the virtual user created by ispconfig into pureftpd work 4. The correlation between username and password and the user web7 and the group client0 does work. What kind of magic has been cast upon the ispconfig directories [/var/www/clients/*] that block ftpusers to operate?

  I've noticed these kerberos keytab error messages on both SLES 11.2 and CentOS 6.3: sshd[31442]: pam_krb5[31442]: error reading keytab 'FILE: / etc/ krb5. keytab' /etc/krb5.keytab does not exist on our hosts, and from what I understand of the keytab file, we don't need it. Per this kerberos keytab introduction: A keytab is a file containing pairs of Kerberos principals and encrypted keys (these are derived from the Kerberos password). You can use this file to log into Kerberos without being prompted for a password. The most common personal use of keytab files is to allow scripts to authenticate to Kerberos without human interaction, or store a password in a plaintext file. Thanks. EDIT This message shows up in /var/log/secure whenever a non-root user logs in via SSH or the console. It seems to only occur with password-based authentication. If I do a key-based ssh to a server, I don't see the error. If I log in with root, I do not see the error. Our Linux servers authenticate against Active Directory, so its a hearty mix of PAM, samba, kerberos, and winbind that is used to authenticate a user.

The client now wants the website to appear to be running under www.otherdomain.com/whatson/brand/ Since the website is umbraco it won't run under a subfolder. • LDAP authentication issue with Kerio Connect

  We have Kerio Connect (mail server) running on a Windows Server 2003 server on a domain. In the webmail client, users are able to change their domain password. This functionality used to work fine until a user tried to change their password a few days ago, when every password they'd try would result in the webmail client claiming their password was "invalid". I spoke to Kerio about this and they claim that this error is returned by the domain controller, which supports my initial investigations. The error that the DC is logging when an attempt is made to change the password is this: "80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C090334, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, vece" The "data 52e" part indicates that this is an "invalid credentials" error. I don't see how this can be as I've tried (in the Kerio Connect configuration) various accounts that have privileges to modify accounts, including my own as I am a domain admin. I have ran 'dcdiag' (all tests) on the DC and it came back passing every single one of them. I've searched high and low for an answer to this and came up empty. Does anyone have any idea why this may have suddenly started happening? Thanks! Edit: I should mention that the passwords we are changing to do comply with the complexity policy.

• Having trouble redirecting frevvo using mod_proxy

Confluence sits on port 8080 while frevvo sits on port 8082. I want to redirect both of them to port 80 via Apache HTTP web server so that it doesn't get blocked by company proxies. I've been using the document on Atlassian that shows me how to run confluence behind Apache (I can't post a second URL due to being a newbie here) I've successfully redirected Confluence from port 8080 to port 80 so I can now access Confluence using www.example.com/confluence. • VMWare ESXi 4.1- 5.1 installation hang

  I'm well aware that I'm trying to install VMWare ESXi 5.1 on hardware that's not on the HCL. I can't find my motherboard on the ultimatewhitebox site as well. I acknowledge these issues in advance. What I'm trying to find is someway to access the logs during installation or see a console or log file to see where the installation is hanging at and remove a device or change a setting in the BIOS. The installation is hanging, not getting a purple screen of death. I thought by hitting ALT+F10 or F12 (or some key combination as such) would enable me to see the console but no such luck. I haven't been able to find much within the ESXi online documentation either. Here's the parts I'm using: AMD Phenom II x3 700 MSI 890FXA-GD70 (IOMMU capable) 16GB DDR3 1333 RAM (2x8GB DIMMs) Intel Pro 1000 (Dual-GbE) PCIe x4 (removed during installation) LSI 9211-8i PCIe (removed during installation) LSI 9201-16i PCIe (removed during installation) Matrox video card BIOS settings: IOMMU is enabled (during 5.1 IOMMU successfully loads) AHCI is enabled (hangs for 4.1) Both onboard Realtek NICs are disabled For ESXi 5.1, the installation hangs after vmkapi_v2_0_0_0 is loaded. For ESXi 5.0, it hangs when loading the vmklinux_9 module. For ESXi 4.1 U3, the installation hangs during loading of ahci module. Again, I'm looking for some way to view a console (service console?) or log file during or after an installation attempt to see what verbose error messages or logging can lead me to solving this problem.

• Remote RIB iLO on Proliant via RIBCL

  I'm trying to automate a process for our Ops. The process requires that some windows servers running on blades are shut down, left down for a few hours, the restarted when some other processes complete. This is done by an op logging on to each blade's iLO web interface to stop and start. I've been trying to automate this with HP's cpqlocfg program with partial success. I can issue the GET_POWER, GET_USER_INFO, etc commands but SET_HOST_POWER fails in a specific way. Using the cpqlocfg GET_EVENTLOG command I can see the events XML login and the power comand being issued from the iLO interface but then nothing happens. Some hints from googling suggest ACPI isn't configured properly but I can't find any hits on how to verify this. Am I even using the right command? There's also a few other options like PRESS_PWR_BUTTON etc. Problem is I have nowhere to test this, all I can do at the moment is give a script to ops and ask them to try it as 4am on a Sunday when they try the proc. The shutdown is trivial as I can use the windows "shutdown" command, it's the power on that I need help on. Anyone done this? I'd tag this "rib ribcl ilo" but lack the rep points, sorry.

• Bypassing Router's DNS Settings

  Is there a way to bypass my ISP provided CPE/router's DNS settings? I'd like to use OpenDNS but I am unable to access the administrator acount of the CPE. I tried logging in using the default passwords (admin/admin, admin/1234, etc) to no avail. I found out later that the admin password is generated using a generator where you input the CPE's MAC address. I tried emailing the manufacturer of the CPE (Huawei, the CPE is Huawei BM625) and my ISP but they aren't replying. I also saw similar queries (lots of them!) at Huawei's forums, without a single reply. So as a last resort, I'd like to know a way to bypass the CPE's DNS settings. My subscription is for a WiMAX service. I'm using Windows 7 and have already set the DNS settings for the Local Area Connection. But I still am not seeing the "You are already using OpenDNS" text at OpenDNS's site. And when explicitly using the OpenDNS servers I still seem to get 208.69.38.150 rather than the expected 208.69.38.160: nslookup www.opendns.com. 208.67.222.222 Server: resolver1.opendns.com Address: 208.67.222.222 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.opendns.com Address: 208.69.38.150

• Cannot connect to a VPN server - authentication failed with error code 691

  When trying to connect to a VPN server, I get the 691 error code on the client, which say: Error Description: 691: The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server. I validated that the username and password are correct. I also installed a certification to use with the IKEv2 security type. I also validated that the VPN server support security method. But I cannot login. In the server log I get this log: Network Policy Server denied access to a user. The user DomainName\UserName connected from IP address but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: The remote connection was denied because the user name and password combination you provided is not recognized, or the selected authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server.   I am trying to get ldaps to work through Apache 2.2.17 (Windows Server 2008). If I use ldap (plain text) my configuration works great. This lets me know that my certificate is a-ok. Update: Both ldap modules are turned on, since using ldap instead of ldaps works fine. • Windows 7 Sysprep Default User

  I seem to be having a problem with implementing my sysprep. I have been playing with Windows 7, WAIK, Server 2008 R2 and various other things. I managed to create a WIM with everything I need installed and I have worked out the autounattend.xml. I now have a Windows 7 64-bit complete unattended install from a USB device. It has all my programs, setting and everything done except one thing - the default profile set up 100% correctly. I have created a mostly set up default profile. I booted into audit mode, customized the Administrator account (mostly anyway) and then used sysprep with an unattend.xml file containing the copyprofile=true command. The file was set up with the WSIM and does not contain any extra info. This all works wonderfully. I recreated the WIM and all was good. I then decided to move the default location of the visible stuff in the user profile (Documents, Music, Pictures etc.) without changing the location of Appdata or other hidden folders. This is where things went a little... wrong. I went to the user folder (generally has the User name) with all the other folders in it. I right clicked on My Documents, found the location tab and changed it to M:\Documents. Now if I run sysprep /generalize /oobe /reboot /unattend:unattend.xml it starts the generalise... then spits out a fatal error and goes no further.
