• Balancing full time work and personal coding projects.

  I am nearing the end of developing the major pieces of my website that I have been working on in my spare time for the last 3 months. My goal is to get it released by the end of next month and hopefully start making some money on it. Unfortunately the next step will be to write a lot of specific data handling and ui code that I can see becoming very tedious and boring. When I was first started the project I was able to find time for working on it easily, it was interesting and writing the back-end was new. Once I got to the start of writing stuff that I know and do at work (ui), it seemed harder and harder to make myself work on the project, sometimes the last thing I want to do when I get home from work is code again. Anyone in the same situation? Any tips on how to find time and effort for side projects without burning out? Any tips on staying on the right track?

• Firefox takes a really long time to load some sites on Ubuntu

  Hello guys, I have an issue here. Some sites - just a few - takes a really long time to load on Firefox. One example is A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/) which takes more than 30 minutes (yes, minutes, not seconds). On Opera, ou even through a telnet session, the problematic sites run without problem, fast as expected. I am using Linux 8.04, running Firefox 3.6.3 downloaded from mozilla site, with a 10M ADSL connection. I tried many tweaks I found googling, like disable IPv6, and change http pipelining settings on FF's about:config. None worked. I also used Firebug to find what phase during negotiation is the bottleneck. Findings are in the screenshot. Well guys, any idea what is the issue? And how to solve it? I repeat, this only happens with firefox (3.6.3 and prior versions), for a few sites only (even sites with much more requests, images, javascripts, stylesheets work fine), and http pipelines and IPv6 tweaks on about:config didn't work. • Performance experiences for running Windows 7 on a Thin-Client?

  Has anyone else tried installing Windows 7 on thin-client hardware? I'd be very interested to hear about other people's experiences and what sort of hardware tweaks they had to do to get it to work. (Yes, I realize this is completely unsupported.. half the fun of playing with machines and beta/RC versions is trying out unsupported scenarios. :) ) I managed to get Windows 7 installed on a modified Wyse 9450 Thin-Client and while the performance isn't great, it is usable, particularly as an RDP workstation. Before installing 7, I added another 256Mb of ram (512 total), a 60G laptop hard-drive and a PCI videocard to the 9450 (this was in order to increase the supported screen resolution). I basically did this in order to see whether or not it was possible to get 7 installed on such minimal hardware, and see what the performance would be. For a 550Mhz processor, I was reasonably impressed. I've been using the machine for RDP for the last couple of days and it actually seems slightly snappier than the default Windows XP embedded install (although this is more likely the result of the extra hardware). I'll be running some more tests later on as I'm curious to see particularl whether the streaming video performance will improve. I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences getting 7 to work on extremely low-powered hardware. Particularly any sort of tweaks that you've discovered in order to increase performance..

• HP dv2700 series, Wifi not working in Ubuntu 12.10, Wifi Button always disabled

  I have a HP dv2745se laptop. I always had Ubuntu with the Native Windows Vista and Wifi worked fine. Suddenly my Ubuntu wouldn't load anymore, I tried fixing it for a week and eventually I formatted its partition and just installed Ubuntu 12.10 This laptop has a Wifi switch that works fine in Vista disabling / enabling the wireless connection. HP Wireless Assistant in Windows say Wireless is on. However, whenever I log in Ubuntu the Wifi button is always orange (disabled) and Wireless never works. I had this problem once when I had Ubuntu 12.04 and I fixed it by verifying in Windows that the Wireless Assistant showed the Wireless LAN in "On" mode. However, the same does not work now. I've seen some possible solutions that involve updating the firmware with apt-get. There comes my 2nd problem, my network adapter card is not working and thus I have no internet at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Slow upload, fast download on Windows 7 64bit system

  I've got a weird problem in the download speeds on my desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) are consistently fast (approx. 400kB/s) but uploads are very slow (around 6-10kB/s). This has been going on for the last 3 weeks or so. I am a very competent user and troubleshooter, and have searched online for 2 weeks for a solution, to no avail. Part of the problem is that internet is provided by WiFi by my landlord and I have no access to the router (BT Home Hub router) although I know for sure he wouldn't have the first idea on how to restrict my usage :) (rules that out) Anyway, I've tried: - various drivers (my Wifi 'card' is TP-link TL-WN851N, and I've tried TP-link + Atheros + Qualcomm Atheross drivers, suggested by Microsoft) - various tweaks to network parameters (e.g. as suggested by SpeedOptimser) - various tweaks to Windows 7 services (e.g. disabling/manual-ing unecessary services) - raising and lowering head onto a reasonably firm surface at moderate frequency (jk :D) None of the above have helped, and I'm officialy asking for help now!! • Master Typing Productivity when Programming/SysAdmin [closed]

  I try to learn how to type fast and have managed to learn a lot. I am quite good at typing english text now. I do a lot of programmation though and if QWERTY seems fitted for english text, it doesn't seem fitted to type Ruby, Python, Javascript, Command Line or C++... I have read plenty of articles and if I respect their guidelines/tips, I am using a lot my right pinky specially to type []{}|\;:'"/?=+ enter delete. As you can see this symbols are the ones which are the most used when you are programming and we are using only one weak finger to reach them. Am I learning wrong? Is there is a way to be more productive? (I don't really want to switch to DVORAK) Have you some experiences/tips to share regarding this issue? • Install Ubuntu 12.04 on Drive "D"?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 531S that originally came loaded with Windows Vista. A couple years ago I purchased a copy of Windows 7, formatted the hard drive and installed the updated operating system. In the process I formatted the 10 GB recovery drive partition on drive D as it was no longer needed for Windows Vista. I would really like to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Windows 7 using the empty 10 GB drive D:. I have two questions. (1) Can Ubuntu be installed on a separate partition, a drive removed from the boot sector on drive C:? (2) If so would Grub be installed in the boot sector and properly select Windows 7 on drive C: or Ubuntu 12.04 on drive D?

• Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code?

  Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code? I'm hoping that I can pick up some organizational tips. Most examples in books are too short and leave out lots of detail for the sake of brevity. I'm particularly interested on how to group your variables and methods so that another programmer would know where to look in the code. For example initializers at the top, then methods that take input, then methods that update views. I don't care about a particular language, as long as its OOP. I looked at the Quake 2 and 3 sources, but they're straight C and not much help for getting tips on organizing your objects. So, have you seen some good source? Any pointers to code that makes you say "wow, that's well organized" would be great.

• Damaged external NTFS hard disk

  A few days ago, I used my external hard disk (a 2TB Seagate) in order to transfer some files on Windows Vista. During that, I noticed some malfunctions on my system (it was running too slow, Windows Explorer crashed). When Explorer crashed, file transportation stopped. I was afraid, but I tried to access my files and it seemed to be working. I tried to open a movie (from the external disk) but it couldn't load. I thought of restarting, but this took sooo long... So I unplugged the hard disk and at that time it managed to shut down. I logged on to Windows Vista but the hard disk couldn't be mounted. I plugged it but nothing happened. I unplugged it and I heard this specific sound that notifies that something has been unplugged. I thought of logging to Ubuntu 10.04 and see what I can do. I plugged the hard disk, but I couldn't see it. I opened GParted but I couldn't see it either. I tried with Disc Utility and there it was! I tried to mount it but a got an error message stating that an error occured with Windows, there is a file (0,0) that has problem or something like that. It suggested to log into Windows and run chkdsk /f and reboot twice. The thing is that I am somehow afraid to do so because I don't really know the impact on that. Plus I don't trust doing even a check on Vista... I finally risked it and I typed chkdsk/f on a cmd. I cannot, however, actually run it because I don't have admin privileges. So from search I found chkdsk, I right cliked and selected “run as administrator”. It run but I got a message like NTFS file system. It should check at the coming restart. At that point I am mistaken. I thought that f meant F but this is not the case here... Does anyone have any suggestions and advice?

  I'm writing my first 2D game, and I'm writing some tracking logic for the computer enemies. Basic follow-the-player tracking was easy, but ineffectual. Too easy to escape. So I'm trying to implement some more sophisticated flanking and other tactics, and (as expected) it's pretty tricky. This is a topic I know nothing about. I'm going to keep trying, but it'd be awesome to have some examples or tips to work off of. Is there any place that has a decent set of pseudocode AI algorithms, or tips or advice on the subject, e.g. for 2D tracking?

• How do I reset the password for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Wubi in the D: drive of my PC. I have Vista installed in the C: drive. I have forgotten my password for my Ubuntu Admin Account. I only have only access to the Guest login. Please note, I don't see any GRUB menu and get only Vista & Ubuntu as options while booting. I can't get into Recovery Mode of Ubuntu using Shift, ESC or any other way. Please let me know how to reset the password.

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

• CPU spikes cause audio stuttering in Audacious when browsing? (Lubuntu)

  My default audio player is Audacious, browser Google Chrome. I tried Firefox, and while I love it, the CPU load spikes when doing something as simple and small and switching a tab, which causes the audio playing to stutter (as sound is onboard and handled thru the CPU). Chrome doesn't do this as much, but there is the occasional stuttering when browsing, which is ridiculous, as not even Windows Vista does this. So I thought maybe it's something to do with how Lubuntu handles sound, I checked and only ALSA was installed. I tried installing PulseAudio, but, while the music "plays", nothing comes through the speakers. Immediately after switching back to ALSA the music pours out of them. So I was wondering if you had any idea what was going on here. I asked on Ubuntu Forums but apparently my problem is too complex, as it's been over a week since the last reply. Specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2GHz 2GB Corsair 667MHz DDR2 RAM ATi HD Radeon 3650 (AGP) 512MB 500W Cooler Master PSU 80GB SATA II HDD (Vista is installed on 500GB drive) Biostar K8M800 Motherboard

  I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time ever. I have just installed it in a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came pre installed with Windows Vista and i currently run both of the OS (I just choose when the computer starts up). The wifi definitely works on the computer since i used it to download Ubuntu in the first place when I was using Vista. The Network Manager says that I only have a 'Wired' Network and it doesn't have any other options to choose from. I connected the Laptop into a wired connection and downloaded the 'Wicd Network Manager' but it had no effect either. From there I continued to go into 'Software Sources' and installed the wireless drive but that had no effect either. So... What can I do?
