  The following code tries to mimic Polymorphic Embedding of DSLs: rather than giving the behavior in Inner, it is encoded in the useInner method of its enclosing class. I added the enclosing method so that user has only to keep a reference to Inner instances, but can always get their enclosing instance. • How do I make a universal iPhone / iPad application that programmatically uses UISplitViewController

  I couldn't find a good answer anywhere to this. I am using a UINavigationController for my iPhone app, with everything is generated programmatically, nothing in Interface Builder. I am trying to port my app to iPad, using a UISplitViewController and my existing UINavigationController, but I am not sure where I should have the logic of my program separating the view controllers for iPhone or iPad. Do I set up my main file to use a different app delegate or do I use the same app delegate and have the user interface conditionally set up within it? Besides this, whenever I try to compile my app on the simulator it does not recognize the UISplitViewController or even the condition in which I check if the class exists. Can please someone put me in the right direction, remembering that I am not using any xibs?

• ESS/AucTeX/Sweave integration

  I'm using GNU/Linux distro (Arch, if that's relevant), Emacs v23.2.1, ESS v5.9 and AucTeX v11.86. I want to setup AucTeX to recognize .Rnw files, so I can run LaTeX on .Rnw files with C-c C-c and get .dvi file automatically. I reckon it's quite manageable by editing .emacs file, but I still haven't got a firm grasp on Elisp. Yet another problem is quite annoying - somehow, LaTeX is not recognizing \usepackage{Sweave} in preambule, so I actually need to copy Sweave.sty file (in my case located in /usr/share/R/texmf/Sweave.sty) to directory where .Rnw file is located (and I'm getting more frustrated with the fact that this is common bug on Windows platforms!) My question boils down to two problems: how to make LaTeX recognize \usepackage{Sweave} (without copying Sweave.sty to "home" folder each time) how to setup AucTeX to compile .Rnw files to .dvi

• Proper NSArray initialization for ivar data in a method

  I'm new to Objective-C and iPhone development and have been using Apress' Beginning iPhone 3 Programming book as my main guide for a few weeks now. In a few cases as part of a viewDidLoad: method, ivars like a breadTypes NSArray are initialized like below, with an intermediate array defined and then ultimately set to the actual array like this: NSArray *breadArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; self.breadTypes = breadArray; [breadArray release]; Why is it done this way, instead of simply like this: self.breadTypes = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; Both seem to work when I compile and run it. Is the 2nd method above not doing proper memory management? I assume initWithObjects: returns an array with a retain count of 1 and I eventually release breadTypes again in the dealloc: method, so that wraps things up nicely. I'm guessing 'self.breadTypes = ...' copies the data to the new array, which is why the original array can be safely released, correct?

  I get a compile error, which I'm slightly confused about. This is on VS2003. error C2248: 'A::y' : cannot access protected member declared in class 'A' class A { public: A() : x(0), y(0) {} protected: int x; int y; }; class B : public A { public: B() : A(), z(0) {} B(const A& item) : A(), z(1) { x = item.y;} private: int z; }; The problem is with x = item.y; The access is specified as protected. Why doesn't the constructor of class B have access to A::y?

For example if you choose 'Project', then you can compile to .dll and each page gets a *.aspx.designer.cs codebehind file. 1) Why do we have these two different project types? 2) Which do you prefer? 3) Why would I choose one over the other? 4) What's the deal with the *.aspx.designer.cs files?

  I am porting an old 32-bit COM component that was written in VB6 for the purpose of reading and writing to an Active Directory server. The new solution will be in C# and will use SQL CLR user functions. The assembly that I am trying to deploy to SQL Server contains a reference to System.DirectoryServices. The project does compile without any errors but I am unable to deploy the assembly to the SQL Server because of the following error: Error: Assembly 'system.directoryservices, version=2.0.0.0, culture=neutral, publickeytoken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a.' was not found in the SQL catalog. What are the correct steps for registering System.DirectoryServices on SQL Server?

• Naming a typedef for a boost::shared_ptr<const Foo>

  Silly question, but say you have class Foo: class Foo { public: typedef boost::shared_ptr<Foo> RcPtr; void non_const_method() {} void const_method() const {} }; Having a const Foo::RcPtr doesn't prevent non-const methods from being invoked on the class, the following will compile: #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> int main() { const Foo::RcPtr const_foo_ptr(new Foo); const_foo_ptr->non_const_method(); const_foo_ptr->const_method(); return 0; } But naming a typedef ConstRcPtr implies, to me, that the typedef would be typedef const boost::shared_ptr<Foo> ConstRcPtr; which is not what I'm interested in. An odder name, but maybe more accurate, is RcPtrConst: typedef boost::shared_ptr<const Foo> RcPtrConst; However, Googling for RcPtrConst gets zero hits, so people don't use this as a typedef name :) Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  I am trying to embed binary blobs into an exe file. I am using mingw gcc. I make the object file like this: ld -r -b binary -o binary.o input.txt I then look objdump output to get the symbols: objdump -x binary.o And it gives symbols named: _binary_input_txt_start _binary_input_txt_end _binary_input_txt_size I then try and access them in my C program: #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> extern char _binary_input_txt_start[]; int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { char *p; p = _binary_input_txt_start; return 0; } Then I compile like this: gcc -o test.exe test.c binary.o But I always get: undefined reference to _binary_input_txt_start Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

• PHP calling PostgreSQL function - type issue?

  I have a function in PostgreSQL / plpgsql with the following signature: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION user_login(TEXT, TEXT) RETURNS SETOF _get_session AS $$ ... $$ Where _get_session is a view. The function works fine when calling it from phpPgAdmin, however whan I call it from PHP I get the following error: Warning: pg_query() [function.pg-query]: Query failed: ERROR: type "session_ids" does not exist CONTEXT: compile of PL/pgSQL function "user_login" near line 2 in /home/sites/blah.com/index.php on line 69 The DECLARE section of the function contains the following variables: oldSessionId session_ids := $1; newSessionId session_ids := $2; The domain session_ids DOES exist, and other functions which use the same domain work when called from the same script. The PHP is as follows: $query = "SELECT * FROM $dbschema.user_login('$session_old'::TEXT, '$session'::TEXT)"; $result = pg_query($login, $query); I have also tried this using ::session_ids in place of ::TEXT when calling the function, however I recieve the same error. Help :o(

  Hi Guys, Im having some problems with a GTK program im trying to build. When i compile it i keep getting this error: This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 195 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0) Ive traced it down to the following command that appears to be causing it: gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX (Top_Graph), Widget_Get (Graph_Cpu), TRUE, TRUE, 0); Now Top_Graph and Graph_Cpu are both GtkVbox Widgets.   What is the difference between a static array and a dynamic array in C++? I have to do an assignment for my class and it says not to use static arrays, only dynamic arrays. I've looked in the book and online, but I don't seem to understand. I thought static was created at compile time and dynamic at runtime, but I might be mistaken this with memory allocation.   I have some dylibs to load from python with ctypes. I can load libbass.dylib without problem, but I can't load the self-compiled libmp3lame.dylib. Here is the error I get. OSError: dlopen(libmp3lame.dylib, 6): no suitable image found. Did find: libmp3lame.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture Then, I inspect the file type of those libs. Here is the result of libbass.dylib: libbass.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures libbass.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 libbass.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc And here is the self-compiled one: libmp3lame.dylib: Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 I did compile the lame library with the install instructions: ./configure make make install I'm new to mac system, here comes the problem: how to build the libmp3lame.dylib so that it supports different architecture I want? • lwjgl 101: How can I write applets?

  I have a working app in lwjgl. It doesn't do much yet; I've just started, but it does compile and run like it's supposed to. I want to make it into an applet. I've followed the guide here, and I have an applet that runs nicely and displays text and such in the applet area and can access the functions of lwjgl (like Sys.alert), but I can't figure out how to get opengl to actually render. I've tried extending an AWTGLCanvas and calling this.add(myAWTGLCanvas), where this is the Applet that I'm using, but... nothing. The initGL() and paintGL() methods never get called. I wonder if I'm supposed to be doing something with Display, but that's not for applets, right? Help? Also: This counts as a "beginner" question, right?   Hello, I am having the same problem as described below. http://marc.info/?l=php-general&m=124104032703506 The guy answered his own question by: "Sorry, didn't pay attention to the registered streams :-( You need to install a PHP package with ssl or compile it with --with-openssl." What does that mean? I'm fairly new to all this stuff and I don't quite understand what he was talking about, (e.g. registered streams, ssl). We have another server that has SSL. Does he mean that if I just transfer to that server, problem solved? Or is there anything else I need to consider? Can you please help me out? Any help is much appreciated :)

• Why can't I publish MVC project

  I'm having problems publishing my MVC project. When I do publish and upload everything to web server I get this: [InvalidOperationException: The view 'Index' or its master could not be found. The following locations were searched: ~/Views/Home/Index.aspx ~/Views/Home/Index.ascx ~/Views/Shared/Index.aspx ~/Views/Shared/Index.ascx] Weird thing is that Index.aspx exists in ~/Views/Home/, but IIS cannot find it there. If I copy entire project to web server and let asp.net compile it on the fly it works like a charm. My routing code: routes.MapRoute( _ "Default", _ "{controller}/{action}/{id}", _ New With {.controller = "Home", .action = "Index", .id = ""} _ ) routes.MapRoute("Root", "", New With {.controller = "Home", .action = "Index", .id =""}) I'm using IIS7 on Windows 2008 Web server. ASP.NET MVC 1.0, Visual Studio 2008. I've tried it local with IIS7 on Windows 7 - same error.

  I have J2ME code, which I want to be able to compile using the J2ME Polish preprocessor or the wtkpreprocessor (antenna). They mostly use the same directives so it usually works, but ... When I want to insert an URL value in the Java code this gives a problem. In Antenna the code would look like this: //#ifdef my.url //# System.out.println("My Url"); //#expand String location = "%my.url%"; //#else System.out.println("Default"); String location = "http://www.some.default.url.com"; //#endif and in J2ME Polish it would look like this: //#ifdef my.url:defined //# System.out.println("My Url"); //#= String location = "${my.url}"; //#else System.out.println("Default"); String location = "http://www.some.default.url.com"; //#endif I want some way in which I can use the preprocessors interchangeably and still be able to set the url in the build.xml, any ideas?

• Best disassembler tool for the .NET reflector?

  What's the best disassembler tool for the .NET reflector? By best I mean, saving a .NET assembly in a disassembled state in most readable, most likely to compile with fewer changes. The current one I use doesn't show simplified enumeration but shows the full IEnumerable implementations with MoveNext, etc with member names like: this.<4_state CS$<9_CachedAnonymousMethodDelegate3 Btw I am not trying to steal code, just trying out certain things on an already existing assembly instead of writing a similar thing from scratch. In the end, it's what I will learn from this that will stay, not the modified assembly.

• Inserting non-pod struct into a GHashTable

  Hi there, I'm trying to build a GHashTable of instances of a struct containing ints, a time_t and a few char*'s. My question is, how do you insert an instance of a struct into a GHashTable? there are plenty of examples of how to insert a string or an int (using g_str_hash and g_int_hash respectively), but I'm guessing thatI want to use the g_direct_hash, and I can't seem to find any examples of that. Ideally, my code would look like this: GHashtable table; table = g_hash_table_new(g_direct_hash, g_direct_equal); struct mystruct; mystruct.a = 1; mystruct.b = "hello"; mystruct.c = 5; mystruct.d = "test"; g_hash_table_insert(table,mystruct.a,mystruct); Clearly, this is incorrect as it does not compile.
