• How can I create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive? (With NTFS + USB Drive support)

  My motherboard got fried and I was forced to get a new hardware set (MB+CPU+RAM) so in most likelyhood I'll need to reinstall my Windows 7. I usually follow procedure and put the OS on the primary partition and my data on a logical partition - so I can format the primary without concern - but this time I made a mistakte and left some crucial items on the primary partition. I want to create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive which can read NTFS so I can access this data. If booting via a CD-ROM, I would prefer being able to connect a disk-on-key/My Passport to the computer and be able to access it to transfer the data to it. How can I do it? (free 3rd party applications are most welcome)

  I run a windows 2008 webserver and would like to setup the most basic performance monitoring in the world. What i would like is: a plot of ASP.Net request time for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of CPU% utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of Memory utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of network utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of disk utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period I would these plots to be emailed to me each morning. • I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

  I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction. • Openvpn client-to-client connection reencrypted at Server?

  currently i'm using a site-2-site openvpn setup. The routers en/decrypt all traffic that goes from one net to another. One of them is the Openvpn server. This works but performance is not as good as possible. I think the limiting factor is the cpu power of the router. Would it be better if i use client-to-client connections and access the fileserver in the one net from a pc in the other, because the openvpn-server does not have to decrypt the (whole) packets?

• Timing startup processes?

  My Windows 7 use to boot up fast and now its getting rather slow. I suspect one program is eating up all the time yet i cant tell what it is since task manager shows <40% of the cpu being used. What can i use to track how long each process takes when my computer boots/starts up? Note: Except for launchy which i used before my comp became slow, all my startup and services are all signed and known (broadcom, VMWare, Google Inc, Intel, etc) Note2: I am mostly considering the time it takes after i login but i suspect the time before that is slightly slower (i dont think very much though)

• DIagnosing another Windows 7 Lockup

  Im running windows 7 on a fairly modern machine (8gb ram, amd fx-6100, gtx 560ti) and I notice that periodically my windows seems to just hang for a little while. Frequently this occurs after a cold boot and i start up five or six small to medium sized programs, but also occasionally it occurs during normal usage. Basically what occurs is the screen locks up, there is no keyboard responsiveness for a period of 30 seconds to a full minute - after a bit of patience, control is returned, but I'm interested in figuring out what is causing such lockups. I checked the event log and dont see any issues, and all i can see in task manager is a spike in cpu and memory usage right after this occurs. Any tips on how to even begin to diagnose this? Thanks.

• What do BCU.exe and BCUService actually do?

  I've got a Gigabyte G32M-ES2L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz CPU running Windows XP SP3 (fully up to date). Today when I booted the machine my firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall) warned me that BCUService.exe wanted to make a call out to the internet. Wondering what they were I did a Google search and while I found out that these programs weren't malware, I didn't find out what they actually do. The information seemed to boil down to: Part of Browser Configuration Utility Auto-recovery Service from DeviceVM, Inc. This program is not important for your system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. Source So before I remove them from my system does anyone know what they actually do and its it worth them taking over 4Mb of memory?

  Hello, I currently run a server at home consisting of SQL Server 2008 .net Framework 2010 VPN Connection ASP.net Web Services running around 5-6 applications supporting a financial trading system that i regularly use. THe only user is me. Recently the requirement to have these applications running in a 24/7 100% uptime (or 99%) environment has become important. No longer can I both meet this requirement and host my server at home on my network - so i am looking to move to a dedicated hosting company. After some research, the only real companies I can find offering such services are geared towards company web-space hosting. I don't need 1TB+ bandwidth, what i need is CPU, Memory and as much control over the environment as possible. Does anyone have any examples of such a service? Thanks in advance.

• Low end dedicated GPU vs. integrated Intel graphics (for light CAD work)

  I have been asked to spec a PC for an interior design business. They are going to do some AutoCAD work (but they won't be using massive datasets or anything), and also use Kitchen Draw, a program that has 3D visualization features and says, in its requirements, that "a recent NVidia or ATI card might be enough". Since they are very limited budget-wise, I had originally picked a GeForce GT 610 card, but this card is so low end that I'm left wondering whether it will be an improvement at all over the dedicated Intel HD2500 graphics chip that comes with the CPU (I will be using an Ivy-Bridge Intel i5). Most of the information I see around is for gaming, which isn't really relevant in my case. Basically, for the use case I've described (light 3D work), can one get away with a current Intel HD graphics chipset? And will a low end GPU like the GT 610 provide a noticeable improvement?

• rsync stuck with the --checksum option

  I use back-in-time to backup my Linux installation. It serves as an advanced wrapper for the rsync command. Today I tried to add /var/log to the list of folders to be backed up and it caused some serious performance problems. The job seems to stuck on a particular file and the CPU usage of the rsync parent process reaches 100%. I then used lsof to see which file caused the problem and it seems to be the /var/log directory. I did some googling and some experiments with the different rsync options and found --checksum to be the offender. Without the parameter, an incremental backup finishes properly in minutes. With it, the process will stuck when rsync tries to sync a constantly changing log file. This kind of make sense, but it still seems to be a bug to me. Am I using the option correctly? Is there a workaround for this?

• My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep. The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

• Configure Linux server hardware buttons for soft reset or power cycle?

  I have a small modest CentOS server at home. I run it headless because anytime I access it, it's always via SSH. Anyways, tonight it became unresponsive to the network. I could not connect to it to investigate. In this case, I have to hook up a keyboard and monitor to see the problem. I ended up just rebooting it. But after this experience, I was wondering if it's possible to configure the hardware buttons on the CPU case to perform a graceful reboot or graceful power cycle in Linux. Even though the server becomes unresponsive once in a blue moon, it would be nice to simply press a button and have it shutdown all services and gracefully reboot. Anyone know how this could be accomplished?

• What VMWare should I choose?

  I'm new to VMWare stuff. What I need to do is pretty basic: Just to install two different Windows 2008 versions on a server with 2x 4core CPU and 2x 3TB hard disks. I asked my datacenter to install the free version (VMware ESXi 4.1) but apparently it did not recognize 3TB disks. Now I'm wondering whether VMWare 5 can handle 3TB disks, and if so, what variant? • Hardware advice for bitmap / openGL image processing server?

  I am trying to work out a build for a processing server to handle bitmap processing as well as openGL rendering for chroma-keying images and Photoshop automation. My searches here and on Google have turned up surprisingly few results, and seeing that there aren't tags for bitmap or image processing I take it this is a specialized application. The bitmap processing is very cpu-intensive while the chroma-keying and Photoshop stuff is gpu-intensive. I doubt this is a case of over-optimization as our company batches thousands of images a day (currently on individual workstations) and any saving in processing time and workstation down-time would be beneficial. Does anyone have any experience with this type of processing server? Any special considerations that would go into a build like this or am I over-thinking it?

• Why I'm unable to use up/down arrows in my BIOS?

  My BIOS is loading and when I wanted to change anything, the up/down arrows aren't working. What might be the problem? I want to change boot options, but I'm unable to select the boot from CD option. My BIOS version is f2.3. Do I need to upgrade it?   Hello everyone i'm a little worry about my graphic card. before I get into that I will tell you my system specs. I have intel dx58so mainboard, 6gb corsair xms ddr3 ram, intel i7 960 cpu, and ati hd 5970. I'm also using a coolmaster haf92 case. My OS is vista X64. Here is my issue when I type in dxdiag in (Start Search) and I look into display. I see in (approx total memory) 716mb graphic memory. The ati hd 5970 is a 2gb graphic card.   I have a backup script that: compress some files generate md5 copy the compressed file to another server. the other server finishes comparing MD5 (to find copy errors). Here it's the core script: nice -n 15 tar -czvf $BKP $PATH_BKP/*.* \ | xargs -I '{}' sh -c "test -f '{}' && md5sum '{}'" \ | tee $MD5 scp -l 80000 $BKP $SCP_BKP scp $MD5 $SCP_BKP This routine got CPU at 90% at gzip routine, slowing down the production server. I tried to add a nice -n 15 but server still hangs. I've already read 1 but the conversation didn't help me. What is the best approach to solve this issue ? I am open to new architectures/solutions :)

• Windows 7 100% Memory Usage (without any process listed as using that much memory)

  When I plug my external USB 2TB hard drive into my windows 7 box, my RAM usage climbs up to all 4 Gigs (but in task manager it shows that all process are small) and the hard drive is churning like crazy. My CPU is only about 20% utilized All I can think of is there is a Virus scanner or an indexer running like crazy. I've tried to kill all virus scanners (AVG and Windows Security Essentials) and it still keeps going. My computer is completely unusable as everything is constantly swapping. I've tried leaving it on for 2 days now and it still hasn't finished whatever it was doing. Any ideas?

• Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

  I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above.
