• creating decision tree based troubleshooting documentation?

  We troubleshoot a lot of server and network issues and follow a loose set of steps on what to do in different cases. With more and more people and responsibility, the need for standardization is needed so we don't miss something. I know I could accomplish what I want using flowcharts, but I'd like to do something similar to a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style. I think this is pretty much the same as what support call centers seem to do. Are there any tools to make creating such documentation easier? I'm looking for a web based approach if possible.

• App / protocol to tune into live audio and video based on schedule or subscription

  Many of us have embraced the podcasting revolution enabled by rss feeds and podcatchers. Alot of sites now broadcast live streams of what is eventually edited into a podcast. In most cases listening to the live stream gets you the info several days sooner then the podcast. So I was wondering if anybody knows of a notification protocol / app that allows me to auto tune into certain streams when they go live, or based on a schedule. I imagine twitter could be used for the notification but It'd be better not to be tied to a proprietary service. • Numbering equations based on chapter numbers in MS-Word

  I am seeking for a way to number each equation based on the chapter numbers. The number should be placed at the right side of the equation and the equation should be center-aligned. Something like this: (The bounding box around 2.3 is not necessary). I found this article that do this in a tricky way. Sadly it has some problems when I use multilevel numbering for Headings. To conclude, I am looking for a way to numbers equations that: The numbering is formatted as N-M that N is chapter number and M is equation number. equation is placed in center-aligned number is placed in the right side of equation There should be a way to cross-reference each numbered equation. • Postfix : relay based on sender address AND recipient address

  I have configured postfix to relay mails based on the recipient address. In transport I put something like this: recipientdomain.com relay:[my.relay.com] This works fine, when I send an e-mail to [email protected], it does get relayed through my.relay.com. I want to be able to use this relay only when the message comes from a specific address, say [email protected]. Two quick examples: Mail 1: from [email protected] to [email protected] - does not get relayed Mail 2: from [email protected] to [email protected] - gets relayed How can I configure Postfix to achieve this?

• Excel chart won't update, based on calculated cells

  I have an Excel document (2007) with a chart (Clustered Column) that gets its Data Series from cells containing calculated values The calculated values never change directly, but only as a result of other cells in the sheet changing When I change other cells in the sheet, the Data Series cells are recalculated, and show new values - but the Chart based on this Data Series refuses to update automatically I can get the Chart to update by saving/closing, or toggling one of the settings (such as reversing x/y axis and then putting it back), or by re-selecting the Data Series Every solution I have found online doesn't work - I have Calculation set to automatic - Ctrl+Alt+F9 updates everything fine, EXCEPT the chart - I have recreated the chart several times, and on different computers - I have tried VBA scripts like: Application.Calculate Application.CalculateFull Application.CalculateFullRebuild ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll DoEvents None of these update or refresh the chart I do notice that if I type over my Data Series, actual numbers instead of calculations, it will update the chart - it's as if Excel doesn't want to recognize changes in the calculations Has anyone experienced this before or know what I might do to fix the problem? • Windows Java-based apps not working

  After updating the Java JRE to 7u25, many Java-based applications not works as usual, the I upgrade Java to 7u45, and still the apps not working. Minecraft start screen not showing, have to press TAB key to select the Run button and press ENTER to run the game. Netbeans IDE it's running, but none it's showing on the screen. Eclipse and JDownloader are working fine. I cannot run the Java Control Panel, it's only shows the Java icon at the taskbar. My System OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64Bits Java: java version "1.7.0_45" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_45-b18) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode, sharing)

• Making audio CDs en mass - Linux based solutions?

  My mom's sings and gives away cds to people. Invariably it falls to me to have to burn cds for her, and burning 50-100 cds on a single drive is a pain. I DO have a handful of cd burners and a slightly geriatric old PIII 450. This is what i want to be able to do - either point an application at a folder of WAV or MP3s, say how many copies i need on CLI (since then i can SSH into the system and use it headless) feed 2 or more CD burners cds until its done, OR pop in a single CD into a master drive and have its contents duplicated to 2 or more burners. I'd rather have it running on linux, be command line based, and be as little work as possible - almost automatic short of telling it how many copies i want would be ideal. I'm sure i'll have people wondering about legality - My mom sings her own music, and its classical, and older than copyright law, so, that's a non issue. I just want a way to make this chore a little easier, short of telling my mom to do it herself.

  I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet for a list of products and a bunch of factors to rate each one on, and I'm using Conditional Formatting to set the color of the cells in the individual attribute columns. It looks something like this: I want to fill in the rating column for each item with a color, based on the color ratings of its individual attributes. • Raspberry Pi based Hadoop cluster

  Is it at least possible to build Hadoop cluster from Raspberry Pi-based nodes? Can such a cluster meet hardware requirements of Hadoop? And if so, how much Raspberry Pi nodes are required to meet requirements? I understand that a cluster from several Raspberry Pi nodes being cheap is not powerful. My purpose is to organize cluster without possibility of loosing personal data from my desktop or notebook, and to use this cluster studying Hadoop. I'd appreciate if you suggest any better ideas of organizing a cheap Hadoop cluster for studying purposes. UPD: I've seen that recommended amount of memory for Hadoop is 16-24GB, multi-core processors, and 1TB of HDD, but it doesn't look like minimal requirements.

• Sorting Files into Subfolders based on EXIF Date

  I have a huge directory from a HDD recovery that contains 70000+ JPEG files. I tried playing around with some AppleScripts, that I found, but had no luck. I already installed EXIFtool, which might be useful for this task. The current directory structure is as follows: dir001 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg dir002 - file0001.jpg ... - file9999.jpg ... dir070 - file0001.jpg - ... - file9999.jpg The files mostly have EXIF Data, but sometimes there are Files without metadata. Now I hope to be able to sort and rename these files into folders based on the date: 1999 - 1999 01 31 - 1999_01_31_-_22_59_59.jpg 2000 - 2000 05 20 - 2000_05_20_-_21_59_59.jpg - 2000_05_20_-_22_59_59.jpg I figured Applescript/Automator might come in handy for this, however every other solution would be welcome, too!

• Creating a list based on a column

  I need to create a dropdown list in sheet A based on the values in sheet B in column A. I clicked on the A column in B sheet and named it as Models. Then I clicked on the cell in sheet A where I wanted the list to be and selected Data -> Data validation -> Data validation. In the Settings page I selected List in the Allow section, checked Ignore blank and In-cell dropdown. In the Source section I inserted =Models. This way I get all the right values plus a lot of blank values. How do I prevent the blank lines from appearing in the list?

• Deny IIS6 web request based on URL parameters?

  I've got a legacy app running a third-party ecommerce system under IIS6. Some spammers recently discovered a bad security vulnerability in one of the store's forms, which are allowing them to send arbitrary emails from our system. Unfortunately, this store "feature" is built into the default.aspx page's code-behind and I have no way to disable it without shutting down the store. How can I filter out URL request with a given querystring parameter? ie, I want to filter out requests to: http://www.mysite.com/store/?id=SendSpam based on the "SendSpam" string.

• Linux command line based spam checker?

  Does a command line based spam checker exist? We have created a mailbox at a 3rd party, and unfortunately decided on spam checking 'disabled' in the initial setup. There is no way to re-enable spam checking, the mailbox must be delete (and thus all contents lost) and re-created. Does anything exist where we can pump in either: A) Subject + from + to + body + all other fields. OR B) Raw message dump (headers + body). And the command line will let us know weather the email is possibly spam? Thanks.

• Name-based virtual hosting in Apache

  I'd like to set up name-based virtual hosting in Apache, but I don't have DNS name (local private network). Thus I want to get something like that: http://192.168.0.1/wiki - First virtual host - wiki. http://192.168.0.1/redmine - Second virtual host - redmine. As I suggest I can be achievable by using ServerName option in section of both vhosts. But in Apache documentation has no mention that I can use for FQDN IP-addr. Is it possible? How can I reach my wishes? P.S.: I want to share my sites on the same subnet only. Thus any who can ping me can enter http://my_ip/wiki and get wiki, http://my_ip/redmine and get redmine.

• Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration

  I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects that already integrate management of many systems into a single cohesive web ui, except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (ebox control center not free) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo. Also, only manages one system.) Thanks for any ideas! Update: I am not looking to reinvent the wheel of systems management, I just want to "glue" many preexisting and excellent tools together where possible and appropriate; this is why I wonder about what languages can interact well with pre-existing command line tools, while making them manageable with a web ui.

• Does fast typing influence fast programming?

  Many young programmers think that their bottleneck is typing speed. After some experience one realizes that it is not the case, you have to think much more than type. At some point my room-mate forced me to turn of the light (he sleeps during the night). I had to learn to touch type and I experienced an actual improvement in programming skill. The most surprising was that the improvement not due to sheer typing speed, but to a change in mindset. I'm less afraid now to try new things and refactor them later if they work well. It's like having a new tool in the bag. Have anyone of you had similar experience? Now I trained a touch typing a little with KTouch. I find auto-generate lessons the best. I can use this program to create new lessons out of text files but it's only verbatim training, not auto-generated based on a language model. Do you know any touch typing program that allows creation of custom, but randomized lessons?

• Pair programming with tmux and Vagrant

  Does anyone have a clear step-by-step guide for setting up a shared tmux session on a Vagrant vbox that my coworkers (on our local office lan) could SSH into? The articles I've found online only seem to cover setting this up from machine to machine (no virtualbox setups), and I'm not very good at networking, so I haven't been able to extrapolate a solution... We're all running the latest Macs in our office, btw. Here's one article I've found but haven't been able to get working with Vagrant: http://blog.voxdolo.me/remote-pairing-with-vim-and-tmux.html EDIT: To clarify, I don't really know how I should be setting up Vagrant to allow me to SSH into it from a machine outside the one hosting the VM. The article above suggests that I add the tunnels host on my physical machine running the VM (here-on referred to as the MBP), so I did that. Next is the ProxyCommand host declaration, which I have also assumed should live on the MBP. So next I try SSHing into the MBP from a guest machine (another separate physical machine on my network), and that seems to work... but that only gets me into the MBP, not the Vagrant image running on the MBP. I normally login Vagrant image on the MBP via vagrant ssh (per the docs), and I know how to forward ports on the Vagrant VM to the MBP, but it's unclear to me how I could forward ports/SSH from the MBP to the Vagrant VM, which I assume I would need to do so that my guest machine could SSH in--through the MBP--to my Vagrant image. That, in a nutshell, is what I'm trying to accomplish. I do my development work in Vagrant VMs which keeps my MBP nice and clean of any dev-related cruft and also keeps my dev environments totally isolated from one another, yet I would like to start pair-programming with my coworkers via tmux, thus the reason why I've asked this question. I would like to accomplish all of this without setting up an additional user account on the MBP, or giving my coworkers access to my local user account on the MBP to get to my Vagrant VM, if that's at all possible.

• Best console based text editor not only for programmers [closed]

  I need console based text editor for writing both source codes and human readable texts such as emails. I need it to be user friendly. It mean for me: You can use it the same way as the notepad or gedit. You can use mouse there. If you need your mother of girlfriend or somebody to edit your text they will know what to do, they will not realize it is a console and will have only a feeling it is something like a notepad. copy, paste, undo works as usual with usual key combinations (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-Z). shift and arrows works as usual. They select the text. And when I return to the computer I want to use the text editor for programming. I expect: Syntax highliting auto indenting replacing spaces with tabs keyboard shortcuts for compiling possibility to configure it to use a debugger autocompletions for c#, java, c++ and other languages other things I expect from IDE's. I was working and configuring vim for a few years. But It never fulfilled all of my expectations (but it almost did). I thing I could get vim configured perfectly if I had few more weeks time for configurating it. Unfortunately I cannot afford to be configuring vim forever. Is there other alternative? Hopefully some editor I once set up and it will works forever? What do you use? I often hear people are using emacs. Is it worth learning?

What I want to be able to do is assign a Command, or use an event, so that when the user clicks on the Day it will notify the parent of the Day object that it has been clicked. I got an error stating: 'ResourceDictionary' root element requires a x:Class attribute to support event handlers in the XAML file. Either remove the event handler for the Executed event, or add a x:Class attribute to the root element. Which I think means that there is no code-behind file for a ResourceDictionary, or something to that effect. In any event, I'm not sure if I should be using Commands here, or somehow tying events to the Rectangle in question, or if this is even possible. I've seen various places where it sure looks like it's possible, I'm just unable to translate what I'm seeing into something that actually works, hence this post. Thanks in advance.

• Missing ideas in programming language design

  I wanted to try something new and so I designed some programming languages and wrote interpreters for them: A rather low-level, not very expressive language. (I didn't want to parse complex expressions right at the beginning) It featured: Variables (yay) Subroutines, with a call stack Basic arithmetic functions, basic string manipulation, ... Code in the language looks like this: set i 0 inc i print i Very, very basic you see. A more high-level language I decided to make it structured and so it featured things like if-else, while, functions, and so on. The stuff most programming languages have. Ended up like a unworthy Python clone, I hated that. A code-golf language Which ended up similar to J, golfcode, APL, etc. Nothing special As you can see: I don't lack the skills but the ideas. I can't figure out anything new, not even bad, unneccessary things, for my languages. - Do you know of some weird things I could implement in my languages, which don't try to make programming harder (like most esoteric languages) but funnier or more different from other languages? It can't be possible that every weird thing has been tried out so far, or?

• How to make a good programming interview?

  I am doing interviews with from time to time to recruit some not bad people. And I really think I AM NOT doing to correct Job. I work in a company when We have to do a lot o DB programming, .NET programming, Java programming, so we need people who are open minded and not focused on a particular tech. Afterall language is a notation, You have to understand what is going under the hood. I ask people about their project, ask them some coding questions (believe me a SQL question involving a CROSS JOIN is hard), let them write some code, ask them about oo design, ask them how they update their knowledge, and stay up to date, do they have FUN when they code (at least sometimes). Hell I even give them a coding solution for home (3 hours max) to see how they think and code. And yet my hit rate at hiring junior member (those who live over the initial 3 months) is just about 33%. So my question, how do YOU make the good interviews, because I think my hit rate is to low? Do you have any best-practices(should be at least 60-70%)? p.s. And i noticed that: the best programmers are lazy, but motivated, just being lazy is not enough:) But people who write the best code are attentive to details:)

• What are some programming techniques for converting SD images to HD images

  I'm taking programming class and instructor loves to work with images so most of our assignments involve manipulating raw RGB image data. One of our assignments is to implement a standard image converter that converts SD images to HD images and vice versa. I always take advantage of these types of assignments to go a little beyond what we were asked to do, so I added a basic anti-aliasing process that uses the average pixel color of the 3x3 surrounding pixels to improve the converted image. While it helps a bit, the resulting image still doesn't look good, which is ok because it's not expected to for the assignment. I've learned that converting an SD to HD images has shown to be much harder than down sampling to SD from HD just because SD to HD effectively involves increasing resolution when it is not there. Obviously, it is hard to create pixels from nothing, but I'd like enhance my anti-aliasing to something that provides better results when upscaling an image. Most of the techniques I find and read on the internet are far beyond my level of image processing and programming. Can anybody suggest any better methods or processes to create good HD content from SD content that may be within my programming skill level? I know that's a difficult thing to gauge since you don't know me, but perhaps knowing that I can write c++ code to read in raw RGB data and upscale/downscale it with simple average-anti-aliasing will give you an idea.   Hello guys, i guess that many of us has acceptable years of experience in PHP programming, me myself got 5 years programming in PHP since in University (not very solid), i just want to gather some suggestion here, what is better approach in PHP OOP? Since there is a lot of PHP framework out there as well as javascript framework, can anyone share their experience in using one of them as well as using both of the PHP and javascript framework together especially for developing enterprise system? (my company want to start using framework, ISP company) if someone has his/her own framework or class or php file so on and so forth, mind to share? now I've only database connection class. I've never use any php framework before, just jquery as javascript framework, my company has a messed up of programming approach because they did not actually a software house, so all the files are scattered across the server, I see that there are some question before about the framework but i just want to know you all approaches on OOP and in developing massive web apps using PHP, or maybe someone kind enough to share their solid written class.
