• Second Monitor Detected, but not receiving a signal after upgrading to 12.04

  After I upgraded to 12.04, my second monitor is detected (in display settings), but will not power on. I have scoured the Internet and forums for a solution and I can't find anything. I have found a couple people with the same problem, but never a solution for it. I am no expert, but I'm certainly not a noob. My computer uses AMD Radeon 6250 graphics, but I do NOT want to use the proprietary graphics drivers. They refuse to work properly with my second monitor (they ATI drivers will only mirror screens, and I've done everything to try to fix it, and I DON't want mirrored screens) Not to mention that the default open-source video drivers seem to work much better than the proprietary anyway! Again, Ubuntu's default video drivers work fine, and they even DETECT the second monitor (Dell 19'). I can drag stuff off the screen and put it on the 'space' of the second monitor and even a screen-shot shows that there are two monitors active; but the monitor is OFF. It will not power on. It goes into 'power-save' mode because it is not receiving a signal. For some reason it is not getting the signal to power on, even though Ubuntu thinks the monitor is working properly. I had this working fine on my Sony VAIO yesterday (with Radeon graphics/default Ubuntu video drivers). I upgraded to a Samsung Series 3 and now I have this issue. I can't for the life of me figure out why the monitor is connected, detected and I have screen space for the monitor, but the screen won't turn on! • In SharePoint, What is the best way to move a subsite to its own site collection?

  I am currently running a SharePoint 2007 Farm. I have a subsite (http://server/sites/hr/finance) that I wish to move to its own site collection (http://server/sites/finance). I exported the subsite using stsadm -o export. Then I created the new site collection (http://server/sites/finance). Then I attempted to import the site using stsadm -o import. However, I'm getting the following error: "The file cannot be imported because its parent web does not exist" I am running as the Site Collection administrator.

• Highlight identical strings in vi(m)

  One feature of Notepad++, which I find really useful and haven't found elsewhere, is the highlighting of other text that is identical to the one currently selected. Is there something similar possible with vi(m)? (Of course, there is. But how do I achieve it?) That is, any of those: If I am in Visual Mode and have text selected: Highlight identical text If I have searched /foo, highlight all instances of foo. If I am at the beginning of a string (series of characters, numbers or underscores), highlight all other matching strings (prefered solution). The last one is similar to the closing parentheses matching and IMHO the most useful. Edit: For my second use case, I found a solution (that is, Google found it...): :set hls However, the others remain.

• Request Multiple Maya Floating Server Licenses for extra Satellite clients

  Hello all: I am currently setting up a 'render farm' for Maya 2008 Unlimited. One Maya workstation license comes with the ability to render on eight satellite nodes. It works perfect, the remote rendering works like a charm. However, we have additional boxes to set up as satellite rendering nodes, and we have extra Maya workstation licenses. Ideally, the workstation can take two licenses and thus render on 16 nodes, but I haven't been able to figure it out, or determine if it is actually possible. It's a big project, where rendering the entire thing is in the scope of weeks, so the speed up would be worth it. Any thoughts?

• How to Structure a Trinary state in DB and Application

  How should I structure, in the DB especially, but also in the application, a trinary state? For instance, I have user feedback records which need to be reviewed before they are presented to the general public. This means a feedback reviewer must see the unreviewed feedback, then approve or reject them. I can think of a couple ways to represent this: Two boolean flags: Seen/Unseen and Approved/Rejected. This is the simplest and probably the smallest database solution (presumably boolean fields are simple bits). The downside is that there are really only three states I care about (unseen/approved/rejected) and this creates four states, including one I don't care about (a record which is seen but not approved or rejected is essentially unseen). String column in the DB with constants/enum in application. Using Rating::APPROVED_STATE within the application and letting it equal whatever it wants in the DB. This is a larger column in the db and I'm concerned about doing string comparisons whenever I need these records. Perhaps mitigatable with an index? Single boolean column, but allow nulls. A true is approved, a false is rejected. A null is unseen. Not sure the pros/cons of this solution. What are the rules I should use to guide my choice? I'm already thinking in terms of DB size and the cost of finding records based on state, as well as the readability of code the ends up using this structure.

• Windows Physical Direct Memory Mapping

  I'm a bit disappointed there is almost no discussion of this no matter where I look so I guess I'll have to ask. I'm writing a cross platform memory bench marking application which requires direct physical address mapping rather than virtual addressing. EDIT The solution would look something like the Linux/Unix system calls: int fd = open("/dev/mem", O_RDONLY); mmap(NULL, len, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, fd, PHYSICAL_ADDRESS_OFFSET); which will require the kernel to either give you a virtual page mapping to the desired physical address or return that it failed. This does require supervisor privileges but that is ok. I have seen a lot of information about shared memory and memory mapped files but all of these reside on disc and are thus not really useful when I'm trying to make a system dependent read. It is very similar to writing an IO driver although I do no need write permissions to the physical address. This site gives an example of how to do it on a driver level using the Windows Driver Kit: NT Insider: Sharing Memory between drivers and applications This solution would probably require Visual Studio which currently I do not have access to. (I have downloaded the WDK api but it complained about my use of GCC for Windows). I'm traditionally a Linux programmer so I'm hoping there might be something really simple I'm missing. • Redundant Router and Load Balancing vs. DDoS attack

  With a small server farm at a hoster with great support and conditions, I worry about the increasing number of DDoS attacks against this hoster (not my web project, but other clients on the same location). I have booked a redundant router and load balancer as managed service with this hoster to share the load with all the dedicated servers. However, I was lost again today because another one's project was attacked with DDoS for hours :-( Each hour means hundreds of dollars loss whenever my adserver and tracking is not reachable. Even time-out advertising have to be paid by me but can not be resold to my clients without the servers being available. All the time, the servers, the load and traffic is OK and health, but no chance to keep this stable/online if the hoster is vulnerable. Anyone has ideas or suggestions how to protect - even against DDoS?

  The accepted answer of this question Fast Ways of Cd'ing on *nix? mentions bash having CDPATH is there an equivalent in windows? so from any directory e.g. c:\windows I could do c:\windowscd compbar* and it'd take me to m:\a\b\c\d\e\compbar what if there are many compbar directories? well, the CDPATH solution is one solution, I suppose you order them it'd search through the CDPATH environment variable and choose the first. I'd like that for windows.

• Windows 2008 Server Unable to activate with other methods

  I'm trying to activate windows 2008 server SP2 today since the activation trial is done. I do not have an internet connection with this server so I can not activate online, and with the other servers in this farm I've been able to run the slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx and then it would open up the activate by phone method and we would just activate that way. I say again, I don't have an internet connection so I can not do the online activate. If I do the slui 4 it brings up the activation window but show me other ways to activate is still greyed out. I've disabled the NIC on this Hyper-V server and I still can not get the other way to activate to show up... Anyone have any ideas? This computer is one of my AD servers so.. it being in notification mode kind of sucks. Thanks.

  I just started using the file search program Everything at work to search through documentation on our shared drives. This is after disappointments with Google Desktop and Windows Search. I love the speed of Everything, but I wish it were able to index other shared folders. My makeshift solution was to somehow force Windows to recognize the necessary shared folders as local drives, then add them to the index list. I have also considered using SyncToy, but this requires downloading all data to my drive, which could be terabytes of information - obviously not a good idea on a small company network. What would be the best solution here?

  I have a CA installed on of my Windows Servers in a small farm of systems. I've installed the Certification Authority Web Enrollment and Certificate Enrollment Web Service roles on the CA. I want to issue a Computer certificate to a computer not jointed to my domain. The user attempting web enrollment has domain credentials. The user was able to navigate to https://myServerHostname/certsrv and request a User certificate successfully. However, the user needs a Computer cert as well. From the certsrv site, the user tried the following: Advanced Certificate Request Create and Submit a Request to this CA However, the Computer certificate template is not available under the Certificate Template heading. He is only seeing "User" and "Basic EFS". How do I configure the CA to allow him to request a Computer cert for his system?

• Dropbox style folder for network drives

  Does anyone know of a third party (or even windows native) solution to this simple problem. I want to map an internal network share on our windows server to a folder on each of the client machines in the network. I dont want to have to use Drive Letters I would just like to set up a Folder on my C drive that is actually a windows share eg C:\DATA\Network Docs is actuallyp pointing to \\Server\SharedData\ Is this possible? Is there a third party solution that does it? All clients are Windows XP and Windows 7.

• Cloud services can't be reached from complex customer infrastructure

  We have several services running on a cloud, they all are hosted on Windows Server 2012 R2, have public IP address and specific port. Some of our customers can't reach them because for "some reason" the ports are cut between a firewall between them and us. (some customers are using a shared internet connection in a multi tenant office and they can't change firewall communication) Well, you get it, we don't have the possibility to make all the firewall "allowing" the communication. My customers all runs Windows 7 at least. What is the best counter solution in such case, using Microsoft (Windows Server) technologies? The best would be some kind of tunneling communication or VPN, but the customer should also be able to access his/her enterprise resources. Bby the way, today we using IPSec using Windows Firewall to secure the communication, is IPSec tunneling a solution for us? Otherwise, is there a service in Windows to enable some kind of VPN between a client and a server but only for a given set of servers?

• How to switch off? [closed]

  While I've programmed software for many years, I've only recently started doing so professionally and have noticed a bit of a problematic pattern. I hope this is the best place to pose such a question, as I am interested in others' experiences and solutions... Writing software is, by its nature, a cerebral exercise. When coding for my own sake, I would do so until I was satisfied; even if that meant going all night. Now I'm coding in exchange for goods and services, on projects that are inherently uninteresting to me, I want to 'switch off' when it's time to go home. Maybe you consider that to be a 'bad attitude', but I just don't feel that whatever I'm working on is worth caring about after-hours. Besides, my employer doesn't exactly have the infrastructure required to make out-of-office changes; I can't just clone a repo and even remote login is a PITA. Anyway, the problem I'm experiencing is that, while I'm not particularly overworked or stressed, if I'm faced with a problem, my brain will work on a solution. Generally, it won't give up. Hence I can't switch off and, sometimes, the problem or the solution is significant enough that it disrupts my sleep. While, paradoxically, this doesn't seem to affect my coding ability, it can have a profound impact of the rest of my life. I get increasingly low as I get tired. So far, the best solutions I've found are writing little notes on the matter (and, say, e-mailing them back to my work address) and exercise. Neither of these can switch me off entirely and, as the week progresses, exercise especially becomes untenable due to tiredness. TL;DR How can you stop from being a coding zombie?

• Client side certificates in client browsers with unix server for management

  We are currently running Unix dedicated servers for everything (Web cluster, database, FTP, batch, ...) except for a Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services. The sole purpose of this Windows box is to provide client side certificates to our clients browsers. All our clients are required to install a client side certificate on order for them to be able to access our website. Is there an alternative in the Unix space? The purpose is to make sure only the approved hardware of an approved client can access our website. I'm open for any solution that provides me with this level of security. We are however talking about thousands of certified computers just so you can factor that in in a proposed solution. Optionally we would also like to be able to revoke access. With Regards.

The only important thing is HA. Everythings must be double. My problem is virtual ip. Since I have only one farm which have master slave configuration, how can i do it without proxy? • How to specify or add directory to Python.h search path during setup.py build/install

  I'm running Linux, and have downloaded a python module I must install without access to any but my particular /home/user directory (I have no root privileges nor the option to pursue them). This of course requires the Python source. This I've downloaded and have laying around in said user directory. While asking the admin to copy the proper files into /usr/include/python2.7 is the easiest way to go about this, I am hoping for a more general and portable solution to this kind of problem. Changing only data in the module source (MANIFEST.in, README.txt, setup.py, etc.), how might I add an arbitrary directory to the search path for Python.h and friends? (Without a solution, "python setup.py build" will continue returning with the "Python.h: No such file or directory" error) Thank you very much. • Persisting high score table in flash game without a network. (Featuring: HttpListenerException)

  Hi everyone, this question is very programming-centric, but it's for a game so I figured I might as well post it here. I'm doing polishing work on a GGJ '11 game because it will be shown at an indie arcade tomorrow afternoon, and they're expecting our final build in the morning. We'd like to have a high score table that displays during attract mode, but since it's Flash (Flixel) it would require some networking, Mochi, or something to keep a record of these scores. Only problem is the machine we'd be running on probably won't have network access. As a quick solution, I thought I'd just write up a dinky little high score server in C#/.NET that could take basic GET requests for submitting scores and getting the score list. We're talking REAL basic, like blocking while waiting for an incoming request, run & forget console app, etc. There's no guarantee that our .swf won't get reloaded, and we'd like the scores to persist, so this server would pretty much exists to keep a safe copy of the scores that the game can add to and request, and occasionally the server will write the scores to a flat text file. But, HttpListener is giving me Error Code 87 'The parameter is incorrect.' Have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Or better yet, am I barking up the wrong tree and missing an obviously simpler solution? • Setting up group disk quotas

  I am hoping to get some advice in setting up disk quotas. So, I know about: Adding usrquota and grpquota on to /etc/fstab for the file systems that need to be managed. Using edquota to assign disk quotas to users. However, I need to do the last step for multiple users and edquota seems to be a bit troublesome. One solution that I have found is that I can do: sudo edquota -u foo -p bar. This will copy the disk quota of bar to user foo. I was wondering if this is the best solution? I tried setting up group disk quotas but they don't seem to be working. Are group quotas meant to help in the assignment of the same quota to multiple users? Or are they suppose to give a total limit to a set of users? For example, if users A, B, C are in group X then assigning a quota of 20 GB gives each user 20 GB or does it give 20 GB to the entire group X to divide up? I'm interested in doing the former, but not the latter. Right now, I've assigned group disk quotas and they aren't working. So, I guess it is due to my misunderstanding of group disk quotas... My problem is I want to easily give the same quota to multiple users; any suggestions on the best way to do this out of what I've tried above or anything else I may not have thought of? Thank you!

• Sharepoint .PDF contents displaying as 'searchtext.xml' in searches

  Hi Experts, I recently used installed ifilter in my sharepoint farm to enable searching of the contents of .pdf documents. All went well, except if I search for contents of any .pdf file, they appear in the search results with document title "searchtext.xml", and the link to the document gives a giant page of the .pdf contents in an .xml looking browser page. :s I have added .pdf filetypes to the search, so I am unsure why it is reading them incorrectly.. if I search for a .pdf document title such as 'document.pdf' it will display the result as a html page, though the link does follow to a readable .pdf file. Any help?

  I guess the title explains the problem pretty well. Do you have an idea for a mechanism, which will automatically assign default quota values for every new account created (sort as the skel scheme works, but in this area)? Now, I am looking for a generic clean solution, not some ugly cron based scripts, or wrapper scripts for creating users. I would also like to avoid any external, unmaintained stuff (like forgotten pam modules, and such). Anything what could lead to overhead and extra work in future isn't really the solution, nor is checking for new accounts every minute.
