  • Varnish -> Nginx -> Apache a good idea?

    - by Zoran Zaric
Hey, I'm thinking about the architecture for a new Webserver. Would having Varnish as a cache in front of Nginx as a reverse-proxy and serving static files in front of apache for all heavy lifting be a good idea? I'm going to run php and ruby on rails applications. Will there be too much overhead passing php requests to apache through two other processes? Thanks a lot!

  • 550 relay not permitted

    - by Nick Swan
We are using Fogbugz on our server to do customer support emails. Occasionally we get errors coming back when sending emails which say: 550 relay not permitted This seems to happen at random though, sometimes sending an email to a person works, next time to the same person it'll bounce back. I've tried setting up reverse DNS with the server host and creating the SPF record in GoDaddy but we still get some of these errors. Is there anything else I can do, and is there a way of testing these are actually configured correctly?

  • DDNS Not Creating Journal (Dhcpd and Named)

    - by user130094
    * EDIT 1 * After monkeying with additional debug logging I see some log entries of interest. 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: journal rollforward failed: no more 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: not loaded due to errors. ^^^ If I can remedy the above messages I think I'll be good to go ^^^ * EDIT 2 * Grasping at straws I touched a forward and a reverse zone journal file and restarted named. Boom! Works. Despite documentation stating the files are created automatically and what I have seen before... dunno why but that did the trick. Also re-checked perms on the dir the files live in. As certain as I was, they were correct with named having rw. CentOS 6 (final) dhcpd 4.1.1-P1 named BIND 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 Basic DHCP and DNS functionality are in place on 192.168.111.2. Clients are assigned addresses as intended and can resolve local DNS names as well as Internet names. My problem is that named's zone journal files are not created. chroot: /var/named/chroot I tried placing the zone files in various directories (/var/named/data, /var/named, /var/named/dynamic - no matter which dir with named owning and wide open perms I now get nowhere). Along the way I, at one point, got a permission denied when named tried to create the journal. Resolved the issue by: chown --recursive named:named /var/named chmod --recursive 777 /var/named The journal was then created and here's where things fell apart. I attempted to tame permissions to something more sane and broke it. Once changed and having restarted named it threw an error indicating the journal was out of sync (or something to that affect)... didn't matter since this is a new setup so I deleted it and now it is not recreated. Now though I see no errors in /var/log/messages, my chrooted /var/log/named.log, or chrooted /var/log/named.debug. I increased the debug level with 'rndc trace' - no love. Increased trace to 10, still nothing. SELinux is disabled... • What's the best way to rewrite traffic from domainA.com/foo to domainB.com/bar while properly rewrit

    - by Chad DePue
We have a number of sites that have blogs, like domainA.com/blog domainB.com/blog and we host the blogs on wordpress multi user: our-separate-wordpress-site.com/domaina_blog our-separate-wordpress-site.com/domainb_blog for SEO reasons we really, really want domainA.com/blog to be the blog url, not the other path. But we don't see any examples where this is done, because we need not to just rewrite the traffic, but cookies as well... is this possible with a webserver or a reverse proxy?

  • Buffer requests in nginx while a symlink switches on backend

    - by Quintin Par
In a release deployment I would like to buffer client requests that come to nginx(in reverse proxy) mode to be buffered for possibily 1-2 seconds while a pdsh request is sent to switch symlinks on the back end server to /var/www/html/current . After the switch is complete, I would want to release the buffering while avoiding a herd clash. Is this possible in nginx? Can someone help? Edit: The idea is not to loose requests and from nginx forums I've come to know that retries can sometimes results in CPU spins

  • Extracting a SQLCLR assembly

    - by Ed Leighton-Dick
One of our in-house applications has a SQLCLR assembly which is currently experiencing problems. The developer is having problems recreating the issue using the version that is stored in our source control system, so he suspects that some code may have been released that was not uploaded to source control. Is there a way to extract a SQLCLR assembly into a .dll file so that he can reverse engineer it for analysis?

  • Does Tomcat or Jetty cache dynamic content?

    - by Continuation
I'm working on a Servlet app with contents that are updated periodically. Hence, between updates any dynamic pages generated by the Servlet can be cached. Does Tomcat or Jetty (or any Servlet container) offer a way to cache dynamically generated pages? Or would I need to use a caching reverse proxy like Squid to accomplish that?

  • Recommended Practices for Managing httpd.conf for different environments

    - by James Kingsbery
We have several different environments (developer dekstop, integration, QA, prod) which should have slightly different variants of the same httpd.conf file. As an example, the httpd.conf file configures that httpd should act as a reverse proxy and proxy certain URLs to Jetty, but the hostname of the Jetty instance is different in each environment. Is there a recommended practice for mangaging these kinds of differences? I looked around the apache documentation for the httpd.conf file and I didn't see anything that does what I need.

  • Convert a CSV file to a XLS file on the linux command line?

    - by Rory
I'm using Debian Linux and I want to convert a CSV file to an Excel XLS Spreadsheet file. The catdoc package includes the xls2csv command that converts from XLS to CSV. However it doesn't do the reverse. Since I just have a CSV file, I don't care about formatting or anything like that. I'm not worried if it only generates a very simple XLS file, and doesn't support the fancy new versions. Just so long as it's an XLS spreadsheet.

  • What is the logic behind IE7s Ctrl-Tab order?

    - by torbengb
Using Ctrl+Tab in Internet Explorer 7 (on Windows XP) seems to follow no sequence that I can work out. Using Shift+Ctrl+Tab even jumps around with no clear logic in what tab order is being followed. It doesn't even work to the reverse as expected from using it in other programs, such as Firefox. Please explain to me how this key combo works in IE7 because I can't figure it out.

  • NGINX Cache Viewstate and Cookies

    - by user42833
We are running NGINX 7.65 on a Ubuntu 10 server. NGINX is setup as a reverse proxy to an IIS website where the viewstate is passed through the headers. We want to set up the cache feature in NGINX but need to make sure it does not mess up the viewstate and cookies associated with each individual customer. Will adding this to the nginx.conf file fix this - proxy_pass_header Header or is there more that would need to be done? Thanks,

  • Server to server replication and CPU and 32k\ corrupt doc

    - by nick wall
Summary: if database contains a doc with 32K issue or corrupt, on server to server replication it causes marked increase in CPU in nserver.exe task, which effectively causes our server(s) to slow right down. We have a 5 server cluster (1 "hub" and 4 HTTP servers accessed via reverse proxy and SSO for load balancing and redundancy). All are physically located next to each other on network, they don't have dedicated network\ ports for cluster or replication. I realise IBM recommendation is dedicated port for cluster. Cluster queues are in tolerance and under heavy application user load, i.e. the maximum number of documents are being created, edited, deleted, the replication times between servers are negligible. Normally, all is well. Of the servers in the cluster, 1 is considered the "hub", and imitates a PUSH-PULL replication with it's cluster mates every 60mins, so that the replication load is taken by the hub and not cluster mates. The problem we have: every now and then we get a slow replication time from the hub to a cluster mate, sometimes up to 30mins. This maxes out the nserver.exe task on the "cluster mate" which causes it to respond to http requests very slowly. In the past, we have found that if a corrupt document is in the DB, it can have this affect, but on those occasions, the server log will show the corrupt doc noteId, we run fixup, all well. But we are not now seeing any record of corrupt docs. What we have noticed is if a doc with the 32K issue is present, the same thing can happen. Our only solution in that case is to run a : fixup mydb.nsf -V, which shows it is purging a 32K doc. Luckily we run a reverse proxy, so we can shut HTTP servers down without users noticing, but users do notice when a server has the problem! Has anyone else seen this occur? I have set up DDM event handlers for many of the replication events. I have set the replication time out limit to 5 mins (the max we usually see under full user load is 0.1min), to prevent it rep'ing for 30mins as before. This ia a temporary work around. Does anyone know of a DDM event to trap the 32K issue? we could at least then send alert. Regarding 32K issue: this prob needs another thread, but we are finding this relatively hard to find the source of the issue as the 32K event is fairly rare. Our app is fairly complex, interacting with various other external web services, with 2 way data transfer. But if we do encounter a 32K doc, we can't look at field properties, so we can't work out which field has issue which would give us a clue as to which process is culprit. As above, we run a fixup -V. Any help\ comments on this would be gratefully received.

  • Is it possible to use Linux as a Fibre Channel Raid Disk Box?

    - by SvenW
You probably all know the relatively simple RAID boxes exporting a bunch of SATA disks as one big drive via FC, SAS or iSCSI, like the HP StorageWorks MSA2000, Infortrends EonStore series or many different other models from different manufacturers. Is it possible to create such a device with Linux, a few disks and an FC controller, using the controller in the reverse direction than usual? This would come handy to test some ideas and concepts in an emerging SAN environment.

I am using nginx in reverse proxy mode. In my server section I have this code to set expire and cache control of my static files. location ~* ^.+\.(css|js|png|gif)$ { access_log off; expires max; add_header Cache-Control public; if (!-f $request_filename) { proxy_pass http://localhost:82; } } This is quite obviously creating issues. • Looking for a solid redirection infrastructre

    - by isoman
We have critical servers (webservers and databases) that are fully replicated, except for the reverse proxy that we use to hide the internal stuff. This proxy is acting like a router that filters and redirects traffic to the main server and switch for failover if the main one is down. We want to find an alternative to this proxy because one single entry point is not enough. Is there any company that has a solid and redundant infrastructure that offers redirection to an IP and allows quick switching to another one?

  • What kind of scaling method is it, when you add new software to a single server to handle more users? [on hold]

    - by Phil
I have read about scaling (in terms of terminology and methods). This got me confused about the following: On a single computer, running a web server (say apache), if the system administrator adds a front, caching, reverse-proxy such as Varnish, which in that scenario increase the amount of requests this server is able to handle. My question: Setting up such cache increases the capacity of the server to handle work, hence scales it, but without increasing neither the amount of nodes or the node's capacity. What is the name for this type of scaling?
