• Uploads fail with shorewall enabled

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 server with shorewall 4.0.6 installed. When I try to upload files using FTP, SCP, or cURL the file upload stalls almost immediatly and eventually times out. If I turn off shorewall then the uploads work fine. I don't have any rules that specifically allow FTP and I'm not too concerned with it, but I do need to be able to upload via 22 (SCP) and 80 & 443 (cURL). This is what my rules look like: COMMENT Allow Server to respond to any web (80) and SSL (443) requests ACCEPT net $FW tcp 80 ACCEPT $FW net tcp 80 ACCEPT net $FW tcp 443 ACCEPT $FW net tcp 443 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to SNMPD (161) requests ACCEPT net $FW udp 161 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to MySQL (3306) requests (for MySQL Graphing) ACCEPT net $FW tcp 3306 COMMENT Allow Server to respond to any SSH connection attempts, and to SSH out. • Unusual HEAD requests to nonsense URLs from Chrome

  I have noticed unusual traffic coming from my workstation the last couple of days. I am seeing HEAD requests sent to random character URLs, usually three or four within a second, and they appear to be coming from my Chrome browser. The requests repeat only three or four times a day, but I have not identified a particular pattern. The URL characters are different for each request. No such host is known I have been unable to find any information through Google searches related to this issue. I do not remember seeing this kind of traffic before late last week, but it may be that I just missed it before. The one modification I made to my system last week that was unusual was adding the Delicious add-in/extension to both IE and Chrome. I have since removed both of these, but am still seeing the traffic. I have run virus scan (Trend Micro) and HiJackThis looking for malicious code, but I have not found any. I would appreciate any help tracking down the source of the requests, so I can determine if they are benign, or indicative of a bigger problem. Thanks.

• connecting to a network using route command

  I have a computer with an external IP(192.168.223.220) and also an internal address (10.1.1.20) in order to connect to some servers that don't have external addresses only 10.1.1.xx . in order to connect to these servers from other machines I used the following command "route ADD 10.1.1.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.223.220" and than I was able to connect to the servers using there 10.1.1.xx address. The problem is that the hard disk of main server(192.168.223.220) died and was replaced and after the that I am not able to connect to the servers as before, the route command succeeds and I can ping 10.1.1.20 but not the other servers. • Apache with multiple domains, single IP, VirtualHost is catching the wrong traffic

  I have a SOAP web service I am providing on a apache web server. There are 6 different clients (IPs) that request data and 3 of them are hitting the wrong domain. I am trying to find a way to log which domain name the requests are coming from. Details: ServerA is the primary ServerB is the backup domain1.com - the domain the web service is on domain2.com - a seperate domain that server seperate content on ServerB ServerA is standalone for now with its own IP and DNS from domain1.com. This works for everyone. ServerB is a backup for the web service, but it already hosts domain2.com. I added entries into the apache configuration file like: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName domain2.com DocumentRoot /var/www/html/ CustomLog logs/access_log_domain2443 common ErrorLog logs/ssl_error_log_domain2443 LogLevel debug SSLEngine on ... etc SSL directives ... </VirtualHost> I have these for both 80 and 443 for domain1 and domain2 with domain1 being second. The problem is when we switch DNS for domain1 from ServerA to ServerB, 3 out of the 6 clients show up in the debug logs as hitting domain2.com instead of domain1.com and fail their web service request because domain2.com is first in the apache configuration file and catching all requests that don't match other virtualhosts, namely domain1.com. I don't know if they are hitting www.domain1.com, domain1.com (although I added entries for both) or using the external IP address or something else. Is there a way to see which URL they are hitting not just the page request or someother way to see why the first domain is catching traffic meant for the second listed domain? In the meantime, I've put domain1.com higher in the apache configuration than domain2.com. Now it catches the requests for all clients and works, however I don't know what it is catching and would like to make domain2.com the first entry again with a correct entry for domain1.com, for however they are hitting it. • Cannot browse ipv4 websites (OpenVPN )

  I have set up an openVPN tunnel on my VPS (OpenVZ - Ubuntu 12.04). The problem is when I'm connected to the vpn, I can only browse websites which support ipv6 like google. Ipv4 sites aren't loading (no error, just waiting indefinitely). http://whatismyv6.com/ reports me that I've an ipv6 address, so I guess this is the problem. • Samba access works with IP address only

  I added a Debian etch host (hostname: webserver, IP address: 192.168.101.2) running Samba to a Windows network with a Windows 2003 PDC (IP address 192.168.101.3). The Samba server exports a public guest share, called "Intranet". The server shows up fine in the network, but trying to click on it produces an error dialog, stating I don't have the necessary permissions. So does entering \webserver manually and using \webserver\internet states that the path does not exist. Interestingly, accessing the share by IP address (\192.168.101.2 or \192.168.101.2\intranet) works fine. DNS is configured correctly, and "smbclient //webserver/intranet" on another Linux client works fine. One complicating issue is that the webserver is only a VMware virtual machine running on PDC server. • Logging communication between two VMs

  Hi, I'm trying to set up "malware lab" described in this paper. So far, I've set up Windows guest system, adding one Host-only Network adapter, and setting this (sorry if the names aren't exactely correct, I don't have an english language version): - IP Address - 10.0.0.3 - Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway - not set - Preferred DNS - 10.0.0.4 - Alternate DNS - not set And a Linux guest system - Ubuntu 9.04 - with two Network adapters - Bridged (eth0) and Host-only (eth1), and setting eth1 IP Address to 10.0.0.4, leaving the eth0 to be set by DHCP. But thing is, I don't see any of that kind of lines in log file (If I am looking in the right place, that is. :) It is at /var/log/messages, isn't it?). So, what do you think might be the problem here? I should note, that this is the first time I'm using linux, so don't expect ANY working knowledge of Linux at all... :) Also, since english is not my mother tongue, feel free to point out any gramatical mistakes... :) Thanks for any advice.

• Exchange 2003 inbound routing issue

  Just recently we started experiencing inbound routing issues. Email adddressed to [email protected] is intermittantly translated to [email protected]. This is happening for several users and, as stated, is intermittant. I don't know where to start looking for the solution. Is this an Exchange issue? A DNS issue? We have a single Exchange server inside our network with an FQDN of server.domain.local with a single SMTP Virtual Server. The Advanced properties of the Delivery tab of the Virt Server has an empty Masquerade Domain textbox and the value for the FDQN text-box is set to the domain itself, domain.com. The DNS record for domain.com is a CNAME entry referencing www.domain.com. Is this somehow related to the problem? I checked the headers of the inbound messages that generated NDRs as a result of being sent to [email protected] and nowhere in the header is www.domain.com mentioned. To make my life even more difficult, we use Postini as a third-party SPAM filtering service. Our MX records point to the Postini servers and Postini delivers the messages to our server. Perhaps it is Postini that is mucking things up? sigh I'm having trouble with this one and the intermittent aspect is making it that much more difficult for me. Any ideas?

• How to find the reason for a weekly downtime on an Ubuntu web server hosted by AWS?

  We started monitoring our web server using Pingdom and found out that we have a downtime of a few minutes every Sunday at 0:00 UTC. The test runs every minute and checks if a successful HTTP response (code 200) is returned on port 80. The test fails due to a timeout (no response after 30 seconds). Here's what we've already checked – without success: Since we run our webserver behind a load balancer, I've set the Pingdom test on the load balancer's public DNS and the webserver's public DNS in order to find out if there's a problem with the AWS load balancer – both tests return the same result We set up Munin on our webserver. Everything looked fine even after the failure. Since the last failure lasted only 2 minutes I suppose Munin couldn't capture a potential problem (it only checks every 5 minutes) I have checked /var/log/apache2/error.log and /var/log/syslog for suspicious entries I have checked /etc/cron.weekly and /etc/crontab for suspicious entries I have searched for files created or last-modified during 0:00 and 0:15 using this method: touch -t 201209020000 start touch -t 201209020015 end find / -newer start -and ! -newer end (nothing found) Has anybody experienced a similar problem? Any proposals on how to find the reason for this behavior? It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on an AWS m1.large instance. Thanks!

• Folder Sharing NTFS permissions with Share Permission

  i have a problem on my domain, the history starting from when i had a server with WIN 2008 r2 installed with the following roles installed on it (AD, DNS, DHCP, File). From 1 month i decided to install a new server 2008 r2 server to get (AD, DNS, DHCP) and leave the file server on the old one. i did the following exactly: 1) robocopy all my data on external HDD 2) Install a new server with 2008 r2 3) transfer all 5 roles to transfer the domain to the new server (MainDC) 4) issue (NETLOGON, SYSVOL) not transferred but i decided to reinitialize them again an now they are operating (MainDC) 5) re-create and re-configure a new GPOs and link it to my OUs 6) reinstall Old server operating system with a fresh installation of WIN 2008 R2 (FileServer) 7) join my domain with my domain credentials. the issue when i tried to share folder on \fileserver the permissions that i had set in sharing permissions are applied on the main shared folder and subfolders. the security settings are not applied. i.e. Say i'm sharing \fileserver\MainFolder with sharing permission for Authenticated Users that can read, so every one can read this main shared folder, if i set security permission for \fileserver\MainFolder\User1 that User1 can Read\Write\Modify. User1 can not perform this processes when accessing it from Network Share, i tried alot of steps from topics online get ownership for folder, remove inheritance from parent folder, applying changes for child objects, i tried also to construct a new folder structure but also the same issue, i tried another host PC, also i get the same issue.

• Routing connections through VPN based on hostname (not IP range)

  This bugs me immensly. I need to connect to client's network through VPN. But I definitely do not want to send all the traffic through client's network so this option is out of question. What I need basically is for the OS to know that all client's network subdomains (*.example.com) need to go through the VPN connection. I tried a couple of options: Changing order of services and setting the VPN on top, but this works the same as "Send all traffic over VPN connection". Using "VPN on Demand" option from network advanced options, but this feature is quite rubbish to be honest. Seems to work only in Safari (?!) and it doesn't route the connection, but it basically triggers the OS to connect to the selected VPN. The reason I need it to work based on hostnames rather than IP range is simple - my client has a lot of servers inside his network and it's impossible for me to remember all IPs. They are all within a range, but this doesn't help me remembering. Another option would be to put the VPN connection on the bottom of network services and untick "Send all traffic..." and then put all known hostnames in hosts file, but considering there could be hundreds of servers (therefore hostnames and ips too) it ridiculous job. And if new server appears on the network I'd need to edit the hosts file again. Sisyphean labours. However this works on Windows very simply. If a hostname is not available through default network interface, then it seems to try VPN connection and this works brilliantly. So, how can I achieve that on Mac, then? I know client's internal DNS addresses if that is of any help (like directing a certain domains through a different DNS)? PS. Using latest version 10.6.6. PS2. I am using VPN to access intranet, version control servers (svn://), samba shares and for SSH access to servers.

• Windows 7 computer apparently connected to working wireless network but can't access router page or internet

  I can consistently connect successfully to both the router and the internet using both my phone and two different computers which strongly suggests that the issue is at the desktop end. Only my Windows 7 desktop machine has stopped getting internet connectivity. It manages to connect to the router's network using the Windows 7 wireless dialog, but can't access either the router configuration page (192.168.1.1) or the internet in general once connected. The strange thing is the wireless network icon in the notification bar shows a full strength signal, sometimes with the yellow warning triangle.   I'm running a local dns server on port 5300 to develop a software. I need my machine to use that dns but I wasn't able to tell /etc/resolv.conf to check on a different port. I searched a bit on google and I didn't find a solution. I set 127.0.0.1 as nameserver on /etc/resolv.conf. This is my whole /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 127.0.0.1 Could you please tell me how can I redirect outbound traffic on port 53 to another port? • Need help diagnosing network performance issues

  I am currently working in a developing country as a system analyst for a government department. My area of expertise is software projects, but I've come across a few issues with the network setup in my office. (Unfortunately, being a developing country, there's not a lot of professional help available for this sort of thing.) Most recently, I am trying to diagnose a problem with slowness on the network. Our office is connected to the internet via an ADSL wireless modem/router (called Router). The modem is connected via ethernet to a switch (called Switch). The modem also acts as a wireless access point (called Wireless1), though because it is in a room at the end of the floor, it's range is limited. There are ethernet ports installed around the office. The cables of these all lead back to the same switch. In closer vicinity to the bulk of the client computers, there is another wireless router that acts as an access point for those clients (called Wireless2). That router is connected via ethernet to a wall port, and therefore to Switch. There is also a Windows server which acts as a DNS server (called DNSBox) which is located in the same room and is connected directly to Switch. ---Internet----------| Router/Wireless1 192.168.10.1 ---------------| |----|=========| DNSBox | |-------------------- 192.168.10.4 --------------------| Switch |---Other clients---- | |-------------------- |----|=========| Wireless2 ------------------| 192.168.10.198 One final thing to mention about the network setup. All clients are configured with manual IP addresses. Their router/gateway is set to the IP address of Router, and their DNS server is set to the IP address of DNSBox (with a secondary IP set to an external IP - that of our ISP's DNS server). Here are the symptoms we are experiencing: Clients connected to Wireless2 AP experience slow and unstable connections to the internet. (Slow here is defined as speeds of ~1KB/s, though ping response times seem to be as normal.) Clients connected via ethernet to Switch also experience the same slowness. Clients connected to Wireless1 AP (i.e. connecting via wireless directly to the ADSL modem) experience normal connections to the internet. Clients connected via ethernet to Router (i.e. connecting via ethernet directly to the ADSL modem) also experience normal connections to the internet. I also tried to gauge the connection performance between two machines on the network via ethernet: A file transfer between two clients who were both directly connected to Switch was the fastest; A file transfer between one client directly connected to Switch, and one client directly connected to Router (which is directly connected to Switch) performed much slower; A file transfer between two clients directly connected to Router also performed slowly. Things I have attempted to diagnose the problem: Restarted Switch -- no change. We tried unplugging ethernet jacks from Switch 4 at a time and testing the internet connection. The thought here was that perhaps a client on the network has contracted a virus, and is possibly spamming the network with traffic? (Not very technical, I know.) Unfortunately we couldn't get any significant increases in performance using this method. There were a couple of times when it seemed to be better, but then the connection speed quickly dropped back to slow/dead pace. I didn't want to unplug all jacks from Switch because I was concerned that users might be affected or that I would re-plug in the jacks incorrectly (should I even be worried about that? a port is a port on a switch, right?) I tried swapping the ethernet cable used to connect Router to Switch -- no change in performance. I tried swapping the port used on Switch for Router -- no change in performance. Anyone got any ideas on what this could be? Should I be mentioning specific brand names/models of the hardware used? Virii outbreaks are common in this country/office -- what could I be doing to figure out if a virus is at fault? If it is a virus, it doesn't seem to be generating a lot of traffic to/from the internet, because a) I can still get a good speed if I am directly connected to Router / Wireless1 and b) our ISP data usage has not risen suspiciously. Update #1 Here are the specs of some of the hardware: Switch is an Edimax ES3132RL 32-Port 10/100 Rackmount Switch Router is a D-Link DSL-G604T Update #2 I just tried unplugging everything except a laptop and Router from Switch. Speeds are still slow. I guess that means that Router / Switch are not being flooded? It seems more and more likely that the cause is something to do with the interaction between Router and Switch. However, I still can't find any useful resources on setting the LAN speed for either (and I'm not well-versed in these advanced networking configurations).

• ISA 2006 refuses VPN DHCP requests as spoofing

  I'm running ISA 2006 with PPTP VPN for my AD-controlled network. DHCP is located on the ISA server itself and authentication is done by RADIUS (NPS) located on the DC. Right now my VPN clients can connect, access local DNS, and can ping ISA, the DC, and other clients. Here's where it gets weird. I noticed that despite all this, ipconfig shows the following: PPP adapter North Horizon VPN: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : North Horizon VPN Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.4.7(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.42.1.10 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled So I went over and checked my ISA logs for both DHCP requests and replies, only to find out that my VPN clients are being denied because ISA thinks its a spoof. Here's some relevant information from the log (the VPN subnet is 10.42.4.0/24): Client IP: 10.42.4.6 Destination: 255.255.255.255:67 Client Username: (blank) Protocol: DHCP (request) Action: Denied Connection Rule: (blank) Source Network: VPN Clients Destination Network: Local Host Result Code: 0xc0040014 FWX_E_FWE_SPOOFING_PACKET_DROPPED Network Interface: 10.42.4.11 --------------------------------------------------------- Original Client IP: 10.42.4.6 Destination: 10.42.1.1 Client Username: (valid user) Protocol: PING Action: Initiated Connection Rule: Allow PING to ISA Source Network: VPN Clients Destination Network: Local Host Result Code: 0x0 ERROR_SUCCESS Network Interface: (blank) I wasn't sure what this 10.42.4.11 network interface was - it certainly wasn't something I had setup - untill I saw it in Routing and Remote Access under IP Routing General as an interface called "Internal" bound to the same IP address. I also noticed that since ISA takes blocks of 10 IP addresses from DHCP for VPN, it had reserved 10.42.4.2-11. I'm not sure if it means anything, though. Thanks for your help.

• Setting up a transparent SSL proxy

  I've got a linux box set up with 2 network cards to inspect traffic going through port 80. One card is used to go out to the internet, the other one is hooked up to a networking switch. The point is to be able to inspect all HTTP and HTTPS traffic on devices hooked up to that switch for debugging purposes. I've written the following rules for iptables: nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.1:1337 -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 1337 -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.2.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE On 192.168.2.1:1337, I've got a transparent http proxy using Charles (http://www.charlesproxy.com/) for recording. Everything's fine for port 80, but when I add similar rules for port 443 (SSL) pointing to port 1337, I get an error about invalid message through Charles. I've used SSL proxying on the same computer before with Charles (http://www.charlesproxy.com/documentation/proxying/ssl-proxying/), but have been unsuccessful with doing it transparently for some reason. Some resources I've googled say its not possible - I'm willing to accept that as an answer if someone can explain why. As a note, I have full access to the described set up including all the clients hooked up to the subnet - so I can accept self-signed certs by Charles. The solution doesn't have to be Charles-specific since in theory, any transparent proxy will do. Thanks! Edit: After playing with it a little, I was able to get it working for a specific host. When I modify my iptables to the following (and open 1338 in charles for reverse proxy): nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.1:1337 -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 1337 -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.2.1:1338 -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 1338 -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.2.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE I am able to get a response, but with no destination host. In the reverse proxy, if I just specify that everything from 1338 goes to a specific host that I wanted to hit, it performs the hand shake properly and I can turn on SSL proxying to inspect the communication. The setup is less than ideal because I don't want to assume everything from 1338 goes to that host - any idea why the destination host is being stripped? Thanks again

• All my emails to Yahoo!, Hotmail and AOL are going to Spam, though I've implemented every validation

  Hi, I've implemented everything and checked everything (SPF, DomainKey, DKIM, reverse lookup), and only Gmail is allowing my emails to go to Inbox. Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL are all sending my messages to Spam. What am I doing wrong? Please help! Following are the headers of messages to Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL. I've changed names and domain names. • Cisco PIX 8.0.4, static address mapping not working?

  upgrading a working Pix running 5.3.1 to 8.0.4. The memory/IOS upgrade went fine, but the 8.0.4 configuration is not quite working 100%. The 5.3.1 config on which it was based is working fine. Basically, I have three networks (inside, outside, dmz) with some addresses on the dmz statically mapped to outside addresses. The problem seems to be that those addresses can't send or receive traffic from the outside (Internet.) Stuff on the DMZ that does not have a static mapping seems to work fine. So, basically: Inside - outside: works Inside - DMZ: works DMZ - inside: works, where the rules allow it DMZ (non-static) - outside: works But: DMZ (static) - outside: fails Outside - DMZ: fails (So, say, udp 1194 traffic to .102, http to .104) I suspect there's something I'm missing with the nat/global section of the config, but can't for the life of me figure out what.
