  I have repeatedly convinced of the reliability of the XFS file system , and I was more than satisfied . I was happy with everything in Ubuntu 14.04 ( great software) , but there is a little "but ! " Basically, I work on OSX-Mavericks 10.9.3, which sees very Windows 8.1 and works wonders with NTFS, but does not see Ubuntu! Briefly describe the equipment: ASRock B75 Pro3-M i5 3330 GeForce GTX 650 Ti SATA 500GB running OS X Mavericks + Clover - a boot disk Toshiba 2TB running Windows 8.1 (x64) and Ubuntu 14.04 (amd64) If you boot from the Toshiba (where there is Ubuntu and boot Windows + GRUB) after restart boot from Clover, it is impossible. Tried a lot of options - as Clover installation and boot priority, and various settings for GRUB, but have not found an acceptable option and have no desire to reinstall again Clover (Mavericks reboots 20 seconds - excellent!) So please help on the file system - how to convert from XFS to HFS+ journaled. Mavericks to saw it all synced on Mac. Thank you for the sensible answer and help! Originally in Russian.

  I play alot of COD4. And can see tracers for gunfire, missles, care packages fall from helicopters etc. There is alot of activity. I am curious to know the algorithm (at a high level) that manages all this action when you have 20 people on a map shooting each other to death ? This question touches on the subject but doesn't ask for a more in-depth answer as to how you the developers go about calculating and transmitting movement and collision detection for projectiles, be it missles/bullets or any other object that is flying through the air in real-time.

  Just recently installed Lubuntu 12.10 on my Samsung N130 netbook, and left-clicking only works every once in a while. Here is the output from synclient, if it helps. Before changing MaxTapTime to 0, tapping to click worked fine. Clicking with hardware button worked fine on previous versions of Ubuntu before switching to Lubuntu on same computer.   I ask the question because I am considering applying to a traditional bricks and mortar university to do mathematics, computer science or software engineering. However I am in my late twenties and have a young family so I am seriously considering going down the Open University route and working in the software development industry at the same time. If I do attend Open University, I will definitely study Mathematics. I fell in love with PHP and the common web technologies a few years back and it has slowly progressed into learning C++, Java and also Python. If I spent the next year increasing my knowledge of those languages whilst studying at the Open University, would an employee consider a self taught programmer who is 20% of the way through a Bsc in Mathematics?

  While working with pointers i wrote the following code, int main() { int a[]={10,20,30,40,50}; int i; for(i=0;i<5;i++) { printf("\n%d",*a); a++; } return 0; } Now as per my understanding array name itself is an address in c and the pointer arithmetic done is here is correct as per my knowledge. But when i try to run the code it is giving me "Lvalue Required" error. So what is the exact reason for occuring Lvalue required error because before this also i have come across situations where this error is there. Secondly why the arithmetic on the pointer is not legal here in this case?

• Contract Programming - Deposit % and Payment Methods? Any advice is appreciated

  I'm pretty new to doing contract work and finally landed a decent paying project. The guy actually offered to put down a deposit and I'm just wondering what percentage I should consider asking for. I was thinking around 25% since its not a terribly large project (only about 20 hours). Also, I can't use PayPal (have had a terrible experience with them freezing funds for no good reason) so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other methods for the client to send the deposit / payment. I want to make it as easy as possible for them.. thanks for any advice

  On a site, every click on a product should be registered by a sales tracker: price, type, etc. The sales tracker should provide an API so that complex queries can be performed, such as: Which products of a type "teapot" had a price below 20 EUR? Requirements: Recorded data should be available for querying no later than two hours after it has been recorded. For example, there are reports that Google Analytics may take up to 24h to update data. That is not acceptable. Querying doesn't need to be fast, but recording does (of course). Which sales tracker allows complex queries against collected data?

• thunderbird-bin causing CPU (core) lockup (12.04, 64bit, up-to-date)

  I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice?

• 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath

  I am a new user of Linux, it has been recommended to me by my friend. He told me to install software called IntelliJ Idea IDE. Well I have been following the tutorial. But now when I try to open "idea.sh", an error message pops-up: 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath. Please ensure JAVA_HOME points to JDK rather than JRE. Please remember that I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm planning for a nice long stay once I get myself into it :) Also I do not know if I am running a correct Java6 JDK. When I do java -version, this is what I get: java version "1.6.0_23" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre10-0ubuntu5) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode) Thank You for reading this and I hope I will get a nice response.

• Windows Repairs Itself After Ubuntu Boot

  I have a custom built computer in my home which was running Windows 7 primarily. After I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and upgraded to 12.10, Windows 7 has to perform startup repair after every Ubuntu boot up. For example, I am using Ubuntu for my everyday work, but when I switch to Windows to play one of my steam games, windows fails to boot, and it switches to the recovery partition to "repair windows" then boots windows. The whole process takes about 20 minutes, which is quite annoying. Anyone know why this is happening or what I can do? Thanks in advance!

• Why doesn't my graphic card support 1280*1024?

  Hi, I have an external monitor which is an 20" 1280*1024. In windows 7 it works fine with that resolution but in ubuntu it can't. Example: In windows I connect it and activates it, done. In ubuntu I connect and the only resolution that is available is the ones my laptop screen support, 12" 1366*768. My laptop is an asus 1201n. • How do you get a high paying job programming in finance?

  Hi, I'm interested in eventually programming for a financial company. Unfortunately, I have a degree in linguistics with a minor in CS along with 4 years experience in .NET. I picked .NET because I thought that it would be more used in the financial world. I've heard some horror stories about badly done VBA Excel programming and being way underpaid...but then I've heard great stories about highly skilled C++ programming along with high pay (including some feedback to previous questions). I just get the impression that unless you have a MS in CS from a top 10/20 school, it might not be realistic. For those of you doing programming for bankers/traders, how did you break in?

  I am doing research about backlinks/PR/SEO/Search Result position and all I read about is that PageRank is not important, that it worth before but now it's not important at all. Only thing I found useful about it that is "change Search Result position", but ONLY if there are two sites with same keywords and same text content value, then Search Engine will check which site has higher PR and place that site above lowest one. Google counts PR importance as 20% for displaying search rankings, and Yahoo! is like 3%... Correct me if I am wrong... Is there any other good thing from it?

• Weird keywords in google webmaster tools

  I just happened to check the keywords list on Google Webmaster Tools for my site, which is an educational content site about finance. To my big surprise, after the first keyword, which is 'finance', I found amongst the 20 highest ranked (!) entries words like: mysql, server, adobe, flash, player, homez. What (i'm tempted to add "the heck") does that mean ? Is that something I should worry about? If so, how did these get there and how can I eliminate these / avoid they get into that list ? • plotting histograms in ROOT with varying variable names

  I am not sure how to phrase this question correctly, but this is what I am trying to do. A single histogram can be plotted using cern ROOT with a following command, (TH1F*)electron->Draw(); But I have tens of histograms named in a sequence, such as electron1, elecron2, electron3, etc, and I want to write a simple loop to plot them all. I tried using sprintf and a simple for loop, but ROOT doesn't like it. char name[20]; (TH1F*)electron->Draw(); for(int j=0;j<5;j++){ sprintf(name, "%s%d","electron",j); (TH1F*)name->Draw("same"); } What am I doing wrong?
