• Why has ESXi 5.0 not used the software RAID configuration on my test server?

  I've got a test server which was running WS 2008 Enterprise on the bare metal. It was correctly using the software RAID 1 configuration (2x250 GB disks which appeared as one disk), setup on the Dell Poweredge T110 (which meets compatibility requirements) without requiring any extra setup from me. (As an aside I'm fairly sure it's software RAID, as we didn't spec a hardware RAID controller, if that's of any importance in this situation). I am now testing installing ESXi 5.0 on this server to run some VMs. I've successfully installed ESXi, and imported a VM fine, but it's showing 2 x 250 GB disks available as datastores. However they should be appearing as one volume. When I boot the server, there is a RAID configuration screen you can enter, and I'm guessing this is what I'll have to do at some stage, but now need to be very careful because there is one disk which contains data that I want to be mirrored on the other disk. What is the best thing to do in this situation?

  I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

  When the Windows Firewall Service is disabled I cannot remote desktop (RDP) to the machine. Has anyone seen this? This is on Win7 64 Enterprise on a domain. Is it some sort of domain policy perhaps? EDIT: Yes, when the firewall service is enabled, RDP works like a charm. I can also ping the system when the firewall service is on, but not when it is off. I am starting to suspect some sort of corporate imposed security policy, but GPedit hasn't really showed anything of significance.

• DRAC for remote OS install w/o Virtual Media

  I have a few DELL servers in a remote DC and our ISP has been very kind about doing OS installs for us. However, as we move to Production and multiple DC's I'd like to be able to do the installs/re-installs internally and DRAC Enterprise w/SDRAM seems ideal. My question is, how do you get your install ISO's on to the SDRAM? Can I just copy it from a local DVD (temp USB hookup) or FTP? What's the advantage to the SDRAM over just buying a USB dongle (to leave plugged into the server) and installing a bootable install ISO? We're a virtual org generally using DSL (2mb) connections to the DC over the Internet and using 'Virtual Media' isn't viable for us.

• In Outlook 2013, the reading pane does not display images correctly for most emails (but does for some)

  I am running Microsoft Office Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 Enterprise. When I click on an email in the list of messages, the preview of the message in the reading pane usually will not show the images contained in the email, but instead will show a red 'X'. Sometimes this red 'X' is followed by the text "The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renmaed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location." I am using an IMAP email account. The really strange thing is that for some emails, the images will display, although they take a long time to load. How can I make the images show up in the reading pane?

• Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

  Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!

• UNC vs. SFTP vs. SSH for uploading to a Windows server

  I understand that UNC, SFTP, and SSH are, of course, different interfaces (protocols?). But feature-wise, how do they differ? Are there things you can do with one that you cannot do with another? Is one more secure than another? The situation I want to fix is one where we have several Windows servers and VPC's, some of which have SFTP servers and some of which don't. For those that don't we use UNC over a VPN shared by the entire enterprise. What I want to do is either use all UNC, all SFTP, or all SSH (unless a real need to vary on a case-by-case basis presents itself). Links would be excellent. My biggest problem here is that my googling brings up irrelevant results. :(

  Im an IT assistant at a CNC milling company and we use a program called made2manage. Its an ERP (enterprise resource management) software. Each license is something like 5k and instead of giving each employee there own copy of the software he has everyone that uses the program connect to a server that has a copy of m2m on it. Its slow when there are a bunch of people connected to it. But I guess they dont want to buy more licenses. Is there a better way to do something like this? How bad of a practice is this?

• What version of Windows Server 2008 to Get

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

• How to send Bluetooth audio to non-Bluetooth speakers?

  In short, I am looking for a Bluetooth-3.5 mini stereo converter. What is this type of device called, and what are some of the best models (is there a difference in audio quality/lag)? I wish to connect some speakers (Altec Lansing inMotion IM7), which does not support Bluetooth, to my laptop (Lenovo X301) wirelessly. Currently, I can connect my laptop's headphone jack to the AUX jack on my speakers via a mini stereo cable. How do I replace this cable with some type of Bluetooth setup? I am not sure what this Bluetooth device is called. I thought I found something, but it actually does the opposite of what I need (3.5 mini stereo-Bluetooth). (My OS is Vista Enterprise, if that matters)

I know best practice is not to run System Center Configuration Manager on a domain controller, but it's the only server I have to work with. • How to pin NetBeans to Windows 7 taskbar?

  I've googled around and it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem, however I couldn't find the solution. Maybe someone around here has figured it out. The problem is that netbeans.exe is actually a stub which is calling javaw.exe. When I try to pin the NetBeans process to the taskbar I actually pin "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary". That changes the icon and the pin doesn't work. The funny thing is that it works on another machine. I don't know whether it's because it's a different version of NetBeans, or a different version of Java. Has anyone figured this out? Added: I know this is sort of not programming related; on the other hand there are plenty of topics around here about how to better your programming environment, and this one is no worse than those.   I have a network that was setup for multicast traffic IN Machine A there is a server application generating multi-cast traffic. I have also different clients subscribing to that mulicast traffic -some client are in the same machine A -other clients are in machine B,C,D # Address I am using IP : 239.193.0.21 PORT: 20401 I don't know why but the client in machine A , even if they join the group, don't receive any data while (and this is the funny part) machine B,C and D receive everything. Checking with Wirshark I can see that the UDP traffic flow is there in Machine A. I am using LInux/Red-Hat Enterprise 6.2 What should I look at? Any setting in the os? Firewall or what?

• VMware virtual network adapters and Windows Firewall

  I am running VMware Workstation 7.1.4 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1-U (x64). Aside from the physical network adapter, I have created a single virtual network adapter (VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1) which is connected to (can be seen by) the host and the guests. My problem is, even after applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak to the virtual adapter, making it disappear from the Network and Sharing Center, I still can't connect to programs running in the host from the guests, unless I specifically "allowed the program to communicate with the public network" using the Windows Firewall (which I don't want to do). This happens to all the programs and services running in the host (File and Printer Sharing, Database server, HTTP proxy, etc.) I am getting the impression that applying the "*NdisDeviceType = 1" tweak only hides a network from the Network and Sharing Center but not actually making it private. Any hints and suggestions?

• Windows 7 "Could not reconnect all network drives" on boot

  Windows 7 won't reconnect to my network drives on startup. Once it is done booting opening Windows Explorer and clicking each share will mount them. Windows 7 Enterprise N Service Pack 1 I have attempted formatting the windows machine - first thing done to machine was to map the network drives, upon reboot they were disconnected. It is running on an Crucial M4 64gb SSD. The host of the network shares is a Ubuntu-Server machine connected through a gigabit switch. A modem provides dhcp, although both these machines have static IP's defined. It won't reconnect the drives regardless of whether they're SAMBA shares or NFS shares - therefore I believe it's an issue with the windows machine. Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-server x86_64) I've tried using ip address instead of netbios name for mapping shares on the windows machine, Also tried setting EnableLinkedConnections=1 gpedit.msc Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System-Logon - always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = yes

  We are using a Meru enterprise wireless network with 180 APs. Recently, many users connections are dropping frequently. After much troubleshooting, we have determined much of the trouble is due to some settings in the advanced properties of the wireless nic on our notebooks. Now we want to send out the changes in a Zenworks bundle, but I cannot find these settings in the registry or anywhere we might be able to send out as a remote package. Does anyone know where to find these settings for an Intel wifilink 5100 card other that the NIC properties itself? We really do not want to manually configure 600 notebooks.

  Hi I would like to get opinions from systems administrators, on how common it is that WMI functionality is actually enabled in corporate networks. I am writing an enterprise network application that could benefit from the features of WMI, but I noted after creating a virtual network based on Server 2008 R2, that WMI seems to be disabled by default. Do systems admins in practical corporate networks enable WMI? Or is it usually disabled for security purposes? What is it used for if it is enabled? Thanks for any advice! MORE INFO: I should have said, I really need to be able to query the workstations but I understand that by default the WMI ports on Win7 and XP firewalls (at least) are disallowed, so do you use some sort of group policy or other method to leave a hole open for WMI on the workstations?   Windows 2008 R2 domain. Users, running Windows 7 Enterprise, are trying to run some software from a network share. Specifically, I've tested this with MATLAB and PuTTY. When starting, MATLAB has to contact a licensing server to get its license. This action fails for regular users when they start MATLAB from the network share. However, if they copy the installation directory to a local disk everything works fine. Running MATLAB as an admin user from the network share also works. Same story with PuTTY. If the executable is launched from the share, regular users cannot connect to any servers. Something is blocking network communications for programs that are launched from a network drive. • Terminal Server 2003 Performance Troubleshooting

  Let me get your thoughts on terminal server performance problems. The server hosts average 25 users which, after running some numbers, on average use 600MB memory with their main applications running (web browser, adobe reader, IP phone client). All users are on the same LAN as server. We constantly experience slow response and short session lockups. Combined CPU usage is on average 10%. What appears strange to me is that the system shows 29GB physical memory with 25GB of it free. The page file usage is about 50% averaging 9GB used. Some server specs OS: Server 2003 32bit Enterprise with /PAE flag RAM: 32GB CPU: 2xQuad Core @ 2.27Ghz HD: RAID5 1.2GB After doing basic troubleshooting using performance monitor it leads me to believe that the performance problems are caused by the 32bit OS limitation in addressing full 32GB of physical memory even though the /PAE flag is used. Can anyone suggest something, troubleshooting steps that can lead to a more conclusive answer? Thanks
